Big Caps fan and season ticket holder----but I have to be honest here ----
Ovechkin is a stupid player. He is costing his team with his foolish play. Trust me - he is going to get a 3 to 5 game suspension, which will cost him the goal scoring title, but moreover he is gaining a reputation which will hurt the CAPS.- but really stupid. Caps won’t win a cup with this guy playing as he is. He must tone it down.
Ovechkin is talented -
I wouldn’t go so far to as to say “stupid”. I would say that he can let his emotions get the better of him.
by David M. Getz on Mar 14, 2010 1:27 PM EDT up reply actions
Agree with this. Ovechkin is an emotional player not a stupid one. He’s adjusted well from a hockey standpoint to increased attention this year by getting assists. There have been games where he’s outphysicaled teams to earn wins. Unfortunately, that was an out of control hit that cost him more than was warranted.
erskine has scored...now i can die in peace
I don’t even think it was emotional. He tried to hit Campbell and if Campbell doesn’t toe pick it’s not an issue. He caught his toe and took a bad fall. Tough luck but not a dirty play.

It’s a bad hit, though, in the sense that the risk outweighs the reward.
by David M. Getz on Mar 14, 2010 1:49 PM EDT up reply actions
Disagree. As F&B says elsewhere, if Campbell doesn’t toe pick, this isn’t an issue. Nothing more than bad luck.

ehhh, he definitely extended his arms and pushed him, which there was really no need for. even without the toe pick I could see a 2 min there

No, no, it was definitely a push. Campbell doesn’t fall if he doesn’t toe pick, and he doesn’t hit his shoulder that way.

If “risk/reward” is your standard then 50% of the hits in the game are bad hits.

I don’t think that’s true, I think most you go ahead with. But hitting a guy at the spot on the ice from that angle is a situation that carries a real high likelihood of resulting in a penalty.
by David M. Getz on Mar 14, 2010 1:51 PM EDT up reply actions
That play isn’t risky if Campbell doesn’t toe pick. It happens all the time. It’s what Laich did to Kane but Kane didn’t eat shit on the play. Not a big deal.

by DrinkingPartner on Mar 14, 2010 1:55 PM EDT up reply actions
No, and that’s about all you can complain about AO’s hit. It was the back of the shoulder, but not in the numbers. Kane didn’t get hit from behind because he turned to face Laich. AO didn’t even lead with his shoulder. 99 times out of 100 an NHL skater can hold his balance and shrug that off. In retrospect you can say AO shouldn’t have done it but normally that play results in nothing.

He needs to trim down apparently so he isn’t overpowering guys so easily. Green takes hits and shoves like that into the boards once a week. He’s just not smart enough to stay down and milk it.

There is an enormous amount of judgment involved in the application of this rule by the Referees. The onus is on the player (or goalkeeper) applying the check to ensure his opponent is not in a vulnerable position and if so, he must avoid the contact. However, there is also a responsibility on the player with the puck to avoid placing himself in a dangerous and vulnerable position. This balance must be considered by the Referees when applying this rule.
I should have saved my old signature. Oh well!
On that last series of replays…it really looked like in the numbers to me. Plus, a push can be nearly as dangerous as a hit.
I may be the only person here, I’m really fine with the penalty that was given.

Well, literally, yes.
However I take “in the numbers” to mean “in the back”. So technically speaking, “in the numbers” is also the shoulder.
I’ll just agree to disagree…because in my mind there’s no way that hit can be called “from behind”. Give him a 2, even a 4…but this wasn’t a case of Campbell being ridden to the boards or a clear in the numbers hit from behind.

From someone that woke up later and saw the replay.
It wasn’t that dirty.
2-4 minutes? 2 maybe.
Its another example of applying the rule differently when someone is “hurt”.
And it doesn’t help that it is Ovie…I agree with the poster above…that this is not a rep he needs to get.

That is NOT a ‘questionable’ hit at all. It IS Boarding, call your 2 minutes, move on. Calling a major on that penalty is ABSOLUTELY an example of a biased referee. Then, when 10 minutes later? according to some of the posts here? you call a game misconduct, something ‘not-legit’ is going on.

TL;DR
1. Ovie gets sent off on a highly questionable call.
2. Both of the Blackhawks’ first two goals resulted from bad penalties by Semin.
3. No one has stepped up since Ovie has been out.

Shocked Flash was on the ice for an opposition goal. Shocked.

Olympics are over, they should have let it go.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
you should read the write ups people have been posting flaming Lebrun for his pick on Norris. Basically people are saying Keith is overrated, mike green is better in every stat they keep track of. Most points, goals, assists, 2nd in +/- to sarge, better GAON/60 and a way better GFON/60 and the differential between those two is over 2 goals, whereas Keith’s differential is less than a goal. And a better Corsi rating.
Joe Corvo understands we hold "Penguins" with as much disregard as theatre people do Macbeth.
Now if we can only get Locker to start calling him Jumbo Joe. . .
Green gets so much attention for Norris because of his points and goals though. Truthfully I wouldn’t pick Green for the Norris…if you want to make an offensive D man award (like the Selke for fowards in reverse) he’d be a shoo in.

Greenie shouldn’t win Norris until Caps make the deep playoff run with solid defense.
erskine has scored...now i can die in peace
Well, he still won’t win the Norris with a strong Defensive playoffs.

Because it’s to set up Mcguire to talk about Green.

And really the point of whether he should have been on the team or not is a moot one. They won the gold. They had the right team.
by Davethecapsfan on Mar 14, 2010 2:17 PM EDT up reply actions
Eh, that’s too simplified. If at the end of the season it turns out that Team Canada left off the top Canadian goal scorer and the top Canadian defensive scorer I think there is still room for a couple questions. They had some dead weight on that team, they were just that good.
Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.

Agreed but the end result was what they wanted, so there will be no doubting the choices made. As we know until you win it, you will always be second guessed.

1 period to make something happen. Chalk it up either way though and see what the Wheel of Justice spits out for Ovechkin. Correct me if I’m wrong but if they feel the game misconduct was unwarranted the automatic suspension can be rescinded correct?
Campbell can’t rule on this case.
Because his son 1) plays for chicago, and 2) his son was the recieving end
The 2nd one doesn’t bode particularly well when Campbell’s 2nd in command makes the ruling

Once upon a time there were these things called rotating clocks. When they broke they stopped. And time passed the stopped time twice a day correctly.

I’m pretty sure most dentists dream of working in Candy Land.
I should have saved my old signature. Oh well!
I think Dentists are more like IT guys: they’ll do the job, but fuck if they don’t hate you for fucking up your computer.
Er, teeth.
