No
It was just a really really bad call.
Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.
Big Caps fan and season ticket holder----but I have to be honest here ----
Ovechkin is a stupid player. He is costing his team with his foolish play. Trust me - he is going to get a 3 to 5 game suspension, which will cost him the goal scoring title, but moreover he is gaining a reputation which will hurt the CAPS.- but really stupid. Caps won’t win a cup with this guy playing as he is. He must tone it down.
Ovechkin is talented -
I wouldn’t go so far to as to say “stupid”. I would say that he can let his emotions get the better of him.
Agree with this. Ovechkin is an emotional player not a stupid one. He’s adjusted well from a hockey standpoint to increased attention this year by getting assists. There have been games where he’s outphysicaled teams to earn wins. Unfortunately, that was an out of control hit that cost him more than was warranted.
erskine has scored...now i can die in peace
I don’t even think it was emotional. He tried to hit Campbell and if Campbell doesn’t toe pick it’s not an issue. He caught his toe and took a bad fall. Tough luck but not a dirty play.

Disagree. As F&B says elsewhere, if Campbell doesn’t toe pick, this isn’t an issue. Nothing more than bad luck.
by DrinkingPartner on Mar 14, 2010 1:50 PM EDT up reply actions
ehhh, he definitely extended his arms and pushed him, which there was really no need for. even without the toe pick I could see a 2 min there
↑ ↑ ↓ ↓ ← → ← → b a (select) start
No, no, it was definitely a push. Campbell doesn’t fall if he doesn’t toe pick, and he doesn’t hit his shoulder that way.

If “risk/reward” is your standard then 50% of the hits in the game are bad hits.
Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.
I don’t think that’s true, I think most you go ahead with. But hitting a guy at the spot on the ice from that angle is a situation that carries a real high likelihood of resulting in a penalty.
That play isn’t risky if Campbell doesn’t toe pick. It happens all the time. It’s what Laich did to Kane but Kane didn’t eat shit on the play. Not a big deal.
Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.
I only saw the one replay of the Laich hit, but that didn’t look like it was at all from behind to me.
And ShaMo just had a mirror image play, but… #6 didn’t eat it, either.
by DrinkingPartner on Mar 14, 2010 1:55 PM EDT up reply actions
No, and that’s about all you can complain about AO’s hit. It was the back of the shoulder, but not in the numbers. Kane didn’t get hit from behind because he turned to face Laich. AO didn’t even lead with his shoulder. 99 times out of 100 an NHL skater can hold his balance and shrug that off. In retrospect you can say AO shouldn’t have done it but normally that play results in nothing.

He needs to trim down apparently so he isn’t overpowering guys so easily. Green takes hits and shoves like that into the boards once a week. He’s just not smart enough to stay down and milk it.

There is hurt, and “hurt”. Guy’s milk plays like that all the time to make sure they get the longest PP possible. Few minutes later they’re back on having missed 1 shift tops.

agreed, and he may be genuinely hurt, I made the original comment seeing him talking just fine to the trainer and looking not bad at all skating off. With all the concussions lately I’d probably tell a guy to sit with a 2 goal cushion as well just to play it safe.

There is an enormous amount of judgment involved in the application of this rule by the Referees. The onus is on the player (or goalkeeper) applying the check to ensure his opponent is not in a vulnerable position and if so, he must avoid the contact. However, there is also a responsibility on the player with the puck to avoid placing himself in a dangerous and vulnerable position. This balance must be considered by the Referees when applying this rule.
I should have saved my old signature. Oh well!
On that last series of replays…it really looked like in the numbers to me. Plus, a push can be nearly as dangerous as a hit.
I may be the only person here, I’m really fine with the penalty that was given.
I was kinda in the double minor area on it, if that helps.

I mean there is no black and white spot for from the side or behind. There’s a lot of gray area there and if just a bit of one of the numbers is covered I don’t see the description “from behind” being correct at all.

Well, literally, yes.
However I take “in the numbers” to mean “in the back”. So technically speaking, “in the numbers” is also the shoulder.
I’ll just agree to disagree…because in my mind there’s no way that hit can be called “from behind”. Give him a 2, even a 4…but this wasn’t a case of Campbell being ridden to the boards or a clear in the numbers hit from behind.

From someone that woke up later and saw the replay.
It wasn’t that dirty.
2-4 minutes? 2 maybe.
Its another example of applying the rule differently when someone is “hurt”.
And it doesn’t help that it is Ovie…I agree with the poster above…that this is not a rep he needs to get.

Rule 21.1

What a miserable first. Ovechkin gets tossed for a hit that, if not a legitimate major (I could see it either way) was a dumb play. Semin with two dumb penalties. Corvo and Steckel looked completely lost on that PP goal against. Brutal.
The upside, I guess, is that Boudreau seems to usually be able to get his guys to respond after periods like that.

So I just woke up in time to see them talking about Ovechkin, and another ‘questionable’ hit.
That is NOT a ‘questionable’ hit at all. It IS Boarding, call your 2 minutes, move on. Calling a major on that penalty is ABSOLUTELY an example of a biased referee. Then, when 10 minutes later? according to some of the posts here? you call a game misconduct, something ‘not-legit’ is going on.
If there ever was an example of a ref unfairly treating a player, it’s this game.

On the bright side, we’ve only let one PK goal in.

Not blaming him for all the goals, but just suggesting the switch to wake the team up and not subject Theo to any more of this.

if its going to be a blowout might as well let Varly take the fall
Joe Corvo understands we hold "Penguins" with as much disregard as theatre people do Macbeth.
Now if we can only get Locker to start calling him Jumbo Joe. . .
What do you think that’s gonna do to his confidence? Don’t we want him to bounce back?

Well, sometimes goalie changes help, right? Maybe Varly finds his game or the Caps O does in time to make a game of this

The game’s not over, but my zeal for watching it sure is. I’m switching to iPhone coverage of this one. I’ve got errands to run. Here’s hoping Campbell doesn’t throw Ovie out for the rest of the regular season. /snark

Does this mean the return of the “Free Alex” campaign?

Jesus, this is almost not worth watching. They’re not even trying.

I think I get more pissed when they play so badly on NBC than on CSN.
You had me at no problem.

I have really been impressed with Carlson physical play. Interesting to see from such a young player
Free Eric Fehr!
Poti I think has been on ice for 3GA. He and 19 are each -2

Knuble seems to be the only guy that showed up today.

Pretty much. Poti’s done some good defensive work, although I wouldn’t call it “showing up” per se.
Oh jesus. I wish Niemi wasn’t playing so well today.
Need to get more shots to make Niemi stop having such a good game.

Was that olie’s last start back in 08? This has a similar ring to it.
Just trying to capture the spirit of the thing...

I know our guys have the ability to come back, but the way they’re playing today…..they’re really going to have to pull it out of their a$$es.

Lot of Stones, NBC, to show a commercial for the Kentucky Derby during a hockey game.
I should have saved my old signature. Oh well!
Hey hey hey! I thought that commercial was awesome. I live in Louisville, KY…. Home of the derby!
I'm rockin' the red... shoes!
I don’t remember when, but NBC cut away from an OT Playoff game just to show the derby a year or two ago. Frankly, I don’t even understand the allure of horse racing, I think it’s pointless, but Kentucky does need something other than the largest hole in the ground.
I should have saved my old signature. Oh well!
The allure is gambling.

Good man. I absolutely sucked at the tables when I went, made most of it back at the book.

Well, sorry that they interrupted the game. Its hard to explain the Derby unless you’ve experienced it. Its one of those things that is more about the entire experience than just the race itself.
Kentucky’s got me! :)
I'm rockin' the red... shoes!
Well, they will be cutting away from their hockey games to show it, so they might as well.

I feel like I’m watching a Blackhawk powerplay.

Hell, if i was in this game, seeing a Blackhawk getting his face beaten in would give me some energy. They need something if they want to salvage this game.
This is the game I’d like to see the Capshave a true enforcerscore some goddamn goals to bring some life.

ugh this game is giving me a headache
"Hey anyway I can get my name out there 30 years from now is great," Steckel said. "They will be like, ‘Who was that guy?’ Then they’ll look at the stats and say, ‘Well, at least that guy was really good on face-offs.’"
