I’m curious how the Blackhawks come out after yesterday’s meltdown against Philly. Combine that with this being the second of a back-to-backer that will be played at essentially 10:30am Chicago time (and less than 19 hours after they finished yesterday) and you’ve got some interesting dynamics going on.

Caps are dominant at ES
Considering their lead in this department, I think they can take this game if they play at 5v5 for most of the game. That’s essentially their GD right there, +1 at ES per game almost.

He also leads the Capitals with 54 helpers, and if he records just one more this season, Backstrom will join Wayne Gretzky and Peter Stastny as the only players in league history to record 55 assists in each of their first three seasons in the league.

From the CSN Wash Backstrom link. Just wow.

Those of you who’ve been following hockey for a long time, is it plausible that the Caps have three super special talents in Ovechkin, Backstrom, and Green?

Of course it’s plausible. I also think it’s harder to make the case that that’s not true than it is.

Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.

I love the intangibles article. Sure, we all know there is more to hockey than just scoring, and everyone needs role guys. With that said, any metric that makes the Maple Leafs look like they are filled with all stars is probably just off a little. And Carcillo topping the list for Philly? Really?

by HateOffSeason on Mar 14, 2010 7:15 AM EDT reply actions

Well, there was that one incident in April last season…but that was bad.

I guess the thing is, by definition, intangibles can’t really be measured by stats (which is what he tried to do). But at least this sort of makes sense as a general metric for intangibles.

Unless I’m just missing it, he does a great job of never explaining how he comes to his conclusions, he just lists a bunch of rhetorical bullshit.

There isn’t a great answer for how many blocked shots equates to a goal scored at the other end, or how many hits it takes to be worth the same as a goal. In reality, 100 hits isn’t worth as much on the scoreboard as a single goal, but there should be some way to indicate the contributions of players beyond simply turning on the red light.

So all I know is that 100 hits is equal to one goal. That’s about it.

I should have saved my old signature. Oh well!

You want to live in the city but you want to go to bed early, so you move next to a building that 50 or so times a year has tens of thousands of fans exiting around 9:30pm. That makes sense.

Right, but honking and making noise in a suburb is waaaaay different than honking and making noise in a major city. People move to the suburbs to get away from the hustle and bustle (ie noise) of cities.

Got a kick out of reading the ‘other’ side’s view of today’s game-check it out. Still think it will be tough for both teams playing so freakin early in the day and DST won’t help matters.
But I’m also confident that the caps will be ‘on’ for this matchup and will get a win-esp w Jose in net. Hopefully BB will quit experimenting w lines for this tilt and have Schultz& Carlson back in. Belanger should be 2nd line C w 21-28 & I hope #15 will also be back in w #39&10. Flash better be in too.

by b.orr4 on Mar 14, 2010 10:25 AM EDT up reply actions

So…tempted…to…take…the…bait…but…it’s…a…clips…thread.

OK, so it was a bubble which means things were overpriced because people were artificially raising those prices by bidding more for them than they were worth only it wasn’t happening on the local level it was happening in the financial markets through the use of aggregated mortgage securities which had the effect of artificially lowering the cost of money to be used to buy houses so that people who had no business buying houses could buy them but the effect on the ground was the same because housing prices went up higher than they should have and houses were priced more than they were worth so it’s a shame that maybe a lot of people who read this (if anyone reads this long run-on sentence) paid too much for their houses and they’re never getting that money back but I’m a conservative (little-“c” conservative which means I actually have a philosophy grounded in hundreds of years of political philosophy instead of just believing what one TV network tells me not that the people who believe that other TV network are any better) and since I’m a conservative I don’t think the president should act to raise or lower the price of any asset or commodity in the market although the last two presidents probably could have prevented the entire financial crisis from happening but that’s water under the bridge now but the bottom line is that I’m sorry that your house lost value but the worst policy this country could follow right now would be to put the houses back at their bubble-level of price because those prices were artificially high and so the last thing the president should do is try to get your house back to its original value.

Sorry, couldn’t help myself. That was bad and wrong, and any further commentary on this topic should go to an open thread somewhere.

You left out the massive amount of fraud perpetrated by mortgage brokers. Cost of money was never low enough that a landscaper making 30K a year was legitimately able to qualify for a loan on a 700K house. Mostly because even if the money was free, they couldn’t legitimately qualify.

Or maybe he likes rooting against DC and needs to root for teams that actually, you know, stand a chance.

I didn’t get to see anything of the game. I just saw Man U won 3-0. Hope Dempsey gets into good form going into the summer. US lack of depth concerns me.

I think things are starting to trend up for them. Dempsey’s back playing, Gooch has just been cleared to train (combined with Nesta’s injury, he could actually see some quality minutes), Chuck Deezy starting to train this week. Now all that’s left is to not re-injure anything, so cross fingers and toes.

Big game for Barca. Gotta keep pace with Real.

Sharing points at Almeria killed em, Valencia is much better than them, they better come out firing.

Is Henry playing today?

No word on the squad list, but with Ibra suspended for a red last week I’d assume so.

Is that game in HD? Otherwise, I may just stream it while the game’s on the TV.

Only if I’m not trying to do taxes during the game (and I probably won’t).

Caps, hw, and exam studying for Weds.

I agree totally about the stupidity of the average person. Horrifyingly, nearly 50% of people are even stupider!

I wish we could get holidays for Caps games. I dunno, maybe a Leafs game is a valid “I didn’t do my homework” excuse in Toronto—seems like it would be

Nope. Maybe in high school. When you get to university, the chances are extremely likely that your prof is actually a sens fan, or a habs fan, or is foreign and doesn’t actually watch hockey at all.

If there's one thing I hate, it's more Sid vs. Ovie talk

…but I can’t help myself….

they’re both great players, they do different things well, I love our guy, whatever.

But this is ridiculous—Burnside and LeBrun think Crosby gets bonus points for leading his team back from a bleh season into the division lead? So Ovie is penalized cause the Caps have been good all year long? And they think Crosby’s case is aided by his teammates having off years? Then why did he get the Hart three years ago when Malkin was having an excellent year?

I know, I know. ESPN. The same people who think Kovalchuk played for the Predators in the latest magazine issue.

If you couldn’t point to specific instances where Ovie has pulled the game out of the fire (includng against the Pens), I could probably seriously accept Sid for MVP, doesn’t mean I’d like it. His team has seriously lagged this year, but Ovie’s stats are so much better in total that I think it’s his to lose.

Somehow I just noticed the reflection of Brooksy in the glass in the pic. Pretty cool.

Eric Staal with the worst intangibles on Carolina! Bwahaha.

Sidney Crosby not leading PIT in intangibles? What is this world coming to?

Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.
