I had another weird Capitals related dream last night…
That the caps played the kings at home and LA’s goalie was a girl. And she threw down the gloves with Varly….. and beat Varly’s ass to a bloody pulp.
OK Psychology majors. What the hell does that mean?
The goalie must have been a little chubby, because I don’t see why she would have beaten Varly, otherwise.

Answer to fat_daddyo’s WNBA question -
Yes, I do enjoy watching the WNBA, as well as women’s college hoops. I’ve attended a number of Phoenix Mercury games over the years, as well as ASU women’s hoops and some NCAA tourney games played out my way.
"You ever use smelling salts, every time you type a bad blog?" Brooks Laich
I’d probably go to a WNBA game if the Mystics played in another arena. I have a superstition and I will not set foot in to the Caps arena after the season is over until the day of the first preseason game, or later. I went to one event once… and the Caps missed the playoffs for the first time in 14 years the following season…
Let's go Caps!
Since Steckel Me Elmo is MIA this morning, I will kick off the daily movie talk. At the recommendation of a couple posters here, I watched Beer Wars last night. Very interesting documentary. I like the owner of Dogfishhead brewery. Seems like a good guy. The chief electrical engineer for the brewery actually vacations next to my parents’ condo out at Deep Creek Lake. He often gives my parents (and me by extension) free six/four packs of various beers to sample. I wish I could remember what he looks like, because he very well may have been in the film. Anyway, good film. It will definitely make you think twice before buying any Anheuser-Busch products, though you should already be thinking twice before buying Anheuser-Busch products.

Sorry to let you guys down today. I spent all afternoon in Nara at Omizutori (Buddhist festival/ceremony). Tōdai-ji is absolutely gorgeous, probably my favorite temple that I’ve been to, up there with Kiyomizu-dera in Kyoto.
Nara is basically a giant petting zoo for deer. At one point one came and stuck its nose in my pocket and started nudging my leg.

Only on the weekends.
Omizutori was pretty cool. People running around with 12 foot torches, spinning them, shaking them. Fire is always fun.
But I’ve found out that I hate mobs in foreign countries just as much as I hate them in the US. Get in a packed crowd and people have absolutely no awareness of their surroundings.

Why do you watch so many movies? Are you an aspiring director, writer, etc? Just a big fan?
I look to the future because that's where I'm going to spend the rest of my life.
Just a big fan. I really enjoy movies. Not any professional inspirations involved in movies.
I probably picked it up from my dad. In college every time a movie came on he would say “Oh, I’ve seen this”, so his friends would joke that there’s never a movie he’s seen for the first time.

Awwww! I really enjoyed getting to meet a small herd of fawns when I took an injured bunny rabbit to a wildlife rescue society. They were licking my face and everything. Very peaceful.
Here’s the bunny… he was no bigger than the palm of my hand. Looked like a bird had gotten ahold of him. The poor dear was scared half to death, but the vets fixed him up, and I hope he got to eat much lettuce.

Yeah, nostalgia is definitely part of it. It’s an objectively awesome game, though.
Twilight Princess is actually really good. It has some fun new items instead of the same ones that re-appear in every game, and some very inventive puzzles as a result. The story is also darker than the other games in the franchise, which is a nice change.

Of course SotN, FFVII, and OoT are excellent choices. Portal is amazing also, not old enough to get classic status like the others, but one of the only games to get a perfect rating on Zero Punctuation (which is hilarious).
FFVI is probably my favorite of the FF series, and Chrono Trigger is another classic of course (along with the OG Zelda and Metroid games).
If you have PSP and like FF and Fighting games Dissidia is good. I loved it, but it seemed to have just the right mix for me.

I’ve beaten it except for the last quest set up. I’ve gotten all the heroes to level 50 (I think) and have all of the villains up to ~30 (I discovered an insanely easy level up trick).
I’m not a huge fighting game fan, in enjoy them, but I’m no picky, so I didn’t need the excellent game mechanics of say, SoulCalibur. But I love Final Fantasy, so I really enjoyed the stories all being intertwined and all of the characters being there. Definitely has a bunch of replayability, for me at least.

They were groundbreaking. Plot in a shooter? WHAAAAAT?
Plus they launched mods like Counter-Strike. That and Battlefield 1942 were the first two shooters I ever played.
They laughed at Columbus, they laughed at Fulton, they laughed at the Wright brothers. But they also laughed at Bozo the Clown.
Can’t give them an order.

I pre-ordered Twilight Princess back in 2004 before there was a release date set or even an actual name for the game. The game then got delayed a couple times and then they decided to make it a Wii game (at the time I ordered it, Wii was not out yet). Anyway, two and a half years later I got a package in the mail that I wasn’t expecting. I opened it up and there was the game I pre-ordered.

Recently started reading “Homicide” by David Simon. I’m only 60 pages in and I’m hooked, it is so good. He does an incredible job of portraying the intricacies of the job of Baltimore homicide police while doing so in the style of an entertaining fiction novel. As a huge fan of The Wire it is also fun to try and pick out which of the real life police in the book were used as models for characters in the show.

I’m currently reading that book too. I’m about 400 pages in. You should most definitely read The Corner too. It was written by both David Simon and Ed Burns. The Wire is chock full of things taken straight out of those two books. It’s kind of depressing because when you watch The Wire, you realize it’s not entirely fiction regardless of what idiot Baltimore politicians will tell you.
I’ve actually recommended it before. Your brother wasn’t very receptive toward the recommendation.

…i’d be happy to sponsor you into the hopkins school of public health if you wanted to take part in this lecture series:
The Wire provides a rare window into the complex challenges of life in urban America. This seminar series will explore the context and complexities that perpetuate health disparities in our cities. Members of the JHSPH and Baltimore community will examine the show’s depiction of public health issues in Baltimore, describe related epidemiological, ethnographic, and intervention research, and facilitate discussions about strategies for meaningful change. Conversations will explore possibilities for working within, across, and outside the complex web of systems that shape public health in urban environments. Join us for a series of important dialogues intended to listen to, understand, and respond to the stories of the Wire.

Hi there! I’m new here. Been lurking for a while, and a bit excited and anxious about making my first post. I went to the “Introduce yourself open thread” but it was closed…. then I went to the “Guide for lurkers” thread, and it was closed! So… I figured the daily off-topic thread was as good a place as any to be, well, off topic!
Gotta be honest— I didn’t post for a while because I couldn’t come up with an avatar. Today I was wearing these red shoes I have, and I was looking at them and thought to myself something about me “rocking the red shoes.” It didn’t have anything to do with the Caps, but no sooner had I thought it than my brain made the connection. And ta da— avatar!
If I ever get to go to a Caps game (live in Kentucky, so not likely to happen any time soon), I will definitely be rockin’ the red shoes!

You did have an avatar but you’re missing the other necessary component of posting here: always say something nice about Jeff Schultz.
President and sole member of the Erskine lobby.
mea culpa—
I bet Jeff Schutlz could rock red shoes, too. :) In a manly way, of course.
I'm rockin' the red... shoes!
Do you have any diaries about those red shoes?

Welcome
What made you a Caps fan?
I look to the future because that's where I'm going to spend the rest of my life.
The first game I actually really sat down and watched was with the Caps, and it was ah-mazing. I guess it was love at first sight! My husband had told me some random things in the past about the this Russian player who was the best in the world… that this guy liked to “show off” after making goals, etc (and my husband didn’t like that). I had no idea who he was talking about, but now I know. And Ovi is now my favorite player…. not to contradict my hubby, but just because, as you all obviously know, Ovi is awesome. The more I learn about him, the more I like him…… plus the majority of the Caps are pretty easy on the eyes, which is always an additional positive factor!
Hubby is a Michigan native, so a Red Wings fan by default. He asks me why I am a Caps fan as well. :)
I'm rockin' the red... shoes!
you should celebrate erratically after every Ovi goal as well :)
If you want to survive out here, you've got to know where your towel is.
