Caps Goals for the season:
-Stanley Cup
-Stanley Cup
-Beat the Pens
-Stanley Cup
Who cares if we beat the SE teams, I don’t think the team will a whole lot. But Leonsis will say something surely, it is nice to do especially with so many games left in the season.
Joe Corvo understands we hold "Penguins" with as much disregard as theatre people do Macbeth.
Now if we can only get Locker to start calling him Jumbo Joe. . .
He was kidding. Settle. We’re all on the same page.

WTF
I see a lot of this type of argument running rampart around here and it just seems to keep gaining steam.
Newsflash: it doesn’t make you seem more intelligent or like a better Caps fan if you neg on everything awesome they are achieving right now and talk about how nothing matters because they didn’t win the Cup yesterday.
That type of reply keeps popping up to people just admiring what the Caps are doing NOT in reply to someone saying, “Wow, I’m completely satisfied with this season and everything the Caps have done. Time to hang up the skates.”
and breaklance, this isn’t directed at you since this was a sarcastic statement misunderstood.

Agreed no need to hate on it, but the measured and “ho hum” response from even BB feels right in that they have always had bigger goals in mind since training camp…hell from the end of Game 7 last year against the Pens. They know what they are capable of and where they stand in the league. Was winning the division on the checklist? I’m sure it was, but it was probably the first item and almost a given to be accomplished if they expected to check off the rest of their “list”.
It’s not a mindset that isn’t giving respect to the idea of being the division champions. When you set the team record for best regular season last year and took the eventual Cup champs to 7 games winning the division in which you’re highly likely to be the only representative to even make the postseason, clearly larger goals are within reach.
by Davethecapsfan on Mar 12, 2010 12:03 AM EST up reply actions
I haven’t read anything closely resembling hate in regards to the Caps accomplishments. There is nothing wrong with not having a parade or sharing the same amount of glee about winning the SE Division as others do. Whats wrong with people not being satisfied with that? And why is it called hate if you aren’t and say so in here?
As Davethecapsfan said, there was probably a list of goals BB started the season with and winning the SE was probably the least significant. This Caps team should have won the SE and probably should for years to come. Not one Caps player or coaching staff member nor GMGM or Ted will look back on this season after an exit in the 1st or 2nd round will say “Hey, at least we won the division”, and you know what, I won’t either. San Jose won the Presidents Trophy last season and got bounced early into a long and painful summer break. There isnt a single Sharks fan that talks about last years Presidents Trophy on the boards. You know who talks about the last years Presidents Trophy? Other fans calling them the SJ Sharks choke artists.
I’m sorry but I do not share the same joy in winning the SE as some others do. Doesn’t do anything for me. It guarantees us nothing other than a banner will be hoisted reminding us that we did it. Do I hate the Caps, please don’t insult me. I’m going to be at practice tomorrow. Does that make me a bigger fan? No. Does not finding joy in winning the SE Division make me less or more of a fan? No. Can fans have different view points on topics and share them with each other? That’s why I’m here.
The only banner I care about is the one we don’t have. I’ll run through a brick wall with excitement if we get that one Until then, the job isn’t done.
Maybe not the biggest sample size, but you should read the replies to my posting on Facebook last night saying “Yay Caps.” Mockery from a Flyer fan friend (but that is to be expected and discounted for its ignorance), a Pens fan friend saying, Yeah, but wait til you get to Pitt (and he’s right that the road to SCF will most likely go through Pitt for anyone and will be tough for anyone), and my Caps fan friends saying that this doesn’t mean anything and it’s all about the bigger goals.
My response is that I’m not breaking out the champagne, but c’mon, we all know that this is the first of many goals this year and that we all know damn well that this team was expected to achieve it, but to do it on March 11? That is really, really cool and one hell of an achievement! I’m proud to take a minute and say Good job, guys! Let’s go Caps!
Now, I will be a very, very disappointed Caps fan if we don’t achieve much more this season, but on the night of March 11, I’m going to celebrate the Caps clinching their division because it is the first step and it was accomplished on March 11! But trust me, if this is all this team accomplishes this year, I won’t be proud of it.
Hey, and don’t forget another Hart Trophy for Ovechkin. BACK TO BACK TO BACK, BABY!

I’m really giggling at this little doozy from that link:
There is no need to put up the goalie stats, the Canes also have the advantage in net. While Theodore has been assured of the starting job, (at least in camp), most Caps fans are expecting Varlamov to eventually take over. While the young Russian can stand on his head at times, he is inexperienced and unproven and can allow more than his fair share of softies, as evidenced by his performance in the playoffs last year. I believe Alex Semin was quoted as saying, “As long as he only allows one soft goal a game, we’re okay”.
Yeah sure, prior to the season Cam Ward was awesome, but injuries happen. I love how everyone dismisses the Caps goalies. It seems to be the hip thing to talk about, but I’ve never lost sleep over the goalie situation in DC.

And Cam Ward was mediocre at best before the injury.

Aim for the head baby Jesus
I think saying Theo’s peak was ‘far better’ than Ward’s is somewhat debatable. Ward’s stat line from the cup winning run in 05-06 is pretty close to Theo’s 01-02 Vezina/Hart season. I guess you could argue that Theo did it over a whole season, but you could also argue that Ward did it when it mattered most. Certainly both have had ups and downs.
Ward: 14-21-5/2.74/.913
Theo: 23-7-6/2.79/.910
Varly: 13-2-3/2.54/.912
Yeah, “no need to put up the goalie stats.”

that was pensblog “paraphrasing” mike green, not semin. did you even try the google cache of the broken link you used as evidence? or you hoped we wouldn’t notice?
Paraphrasing Caps D-man Mike Green:
“If he only gives up one soft goal a game, we’ll be all right.”
and as it was the esteemed pensblog you decided to use as your source (a paraphrase of a paraphrase), you won’t be surprised to hear that they took the quote out of context. as best i can tell, the quote was from ovechkin and it was given in context of the team’s ability to overcome setbacks. the kind of thing a leader should say, right? and even that’s a bit weird, because i distinctly remember AO avoiding all varlamov questions during the pens series to keep from jinxing the rookie.
so yes, pulling a paraphrased quote from a blog that likes to “job” people—a quote that didn’t show up in the recaps of the WaPo, the WaTimes, the Examiner or the Post-Gazette—and attributing it to the wrong guy is kind of B.S., no? JP didn’t say you “made it up,” he said it was B.S., and he’s clearly right. if you’re going to run a quote like that, you could have at least wandered over to google search beforehand. because if you bring up google now, there are only two results…you, and you again. is “i believe” code for “i’m too lazy to look,” or “i’ve already looked but i couldn’t find anything so i’ll just insert this qualifying statement and hope no one calls me on it?”
here is the collection of applicable quotes i found from game 1, courtesy of TEB’s blog.
by Natty Bumppo on Mar 12, 2010 2:52 AM EST up reply actions 8 recs
boudreau was also hesitant to praise varly’s big save that game because in BB’s words, “he owed us one:”
“He owed us one,” Boudreau said. “He let a floater go in from the point. But he made a great save. There’s no doubt. Goalies are taught to never give up. They keep fighting. And that’s the only way the Brodeurs, the Thomases, the Luongos look like they make great saves, it’s because they never quit on the puck. It was obviously the turning point because they would have had the lead and we would have had to play catch up.”
by Natty Bumppo on Mar 12, 2010 3:46 AM EST up reply actions
So what you’re saying is that the “one soft goal” line is a misattributed and uncited use of a paraphrased, unsourced quote from an intentionally inflammatory blog? Yeah, I’m pretty sure I’m comfortable with calling that “bullshit.”

they have been playing very well of late…they needed their own captaincy change, and to clear out some of the old to make way for the new. They usually pull this vanishing act after deep playoffs runs.

F&B, Ward certainly wasn’t their only issue this season, but I believe a healthy Ward all year would have gotten them into the playoffs too.
Prior to this year Ward was trending better every season of his NHL career. I suspect he’ll be back on track next year. I’m not looking forward to his play as a Caps fan.

I think Ward might have helped them surge back from the 14-game losing streak they went on in October/November had he been healthy.
But he was far from the only issue on this team. Did I mention the 14-game losing streak? Oh, also, the Canes didn’t win a game on the road until December (incidentally, they beat the Pens. Though their second road win was against the Caps). They also had an aging forward corps outside of Staal and Brandon Sutter, as well as a lack of good offensive prospects in the system. A healthy Ward gets them to sniff the playoffs, but I doubt he gets them in.
GUTEN TAAAAAAAAAAAAG!
I think he stabalizes things and that is what gets them in. Not saying I would guarantee it, but I think he would have helped right the ship. They need confidence more than anything early in the season.

If the Caps had Ward healthy and in goal and not Theo/Varly/Neuvy, there wouldn’t be any talk of whether or not the Caps had the goaltending to win it all…
Theo is a good enough goaltender to win the Cup. Consider that among the Cup winners in the past few years include Mike Vernon, Chris Osgood, Eddie Belfour (great goaltender, lots of off ice issues), Khabibulihn (see Eddie Belfour), and that goaltenders like Kirk McLean and Ty Conklin have gotten their teams to Game 7 of the Cup finals, I’m ok with Theo.

Just looked at the standings, 14 points, but jeezus, that’s crazy. The Caps are farther ahead of the rest of the conference than most teams end up winning their division. This is a historic season, no doubt.
Amazing what a 14-game winning streak can do for you in the standings. And most of those wins in regulation.

At 99 standings points, we remain, however, one point behind the Hershey Bears, who have one hundred.
