Too bad Johnny is in net. The disgusting part is that we should probably be rooting for Pittsburgh considering we really don’t want to face Carolina in the playoffs.

Good on Guerin for saying this

“We’re all under the same umbrella, whether the guy’s on my team and I’m sitting right next to him or he’s playing in California. … It doesn’t matter. We’re all playing in the same league. We all want the same safety. We all want to be looked after the same way. I understand he [Cooke] is on my team but, hey, he’s in a tough spot.”

For every action, there is an equal and opposite criticism.

by Rather Bengt on Mar 11, 2010 7:48 PM EST reply actions

Yeah I agree. It was a scumbag hit and I think everyone that sees it has the same visceral response that it’s bullshit. I like to think people were the same way about the Richards hit but I don’t think it was the same reaction because Mike Richards is the Ontario Angel and doesn’t have the same goon rep as Cooke.

Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.

by Rob Parker on Mar 11, 2010 7:50 PM EST up reply actions

I dunno about the Richards Ontario Angel rep. I saw loads of criticism of Richards after the Booth hit in the media both on TV and in the papers here in Ontario. Even Joe Nieuwendyk (Ontario native himself) said that the Richards hit was the one they were focusing on at the GM meetings when discussing hits to the head.

For every action, there is an equal and opposite criticism.

by Rather Bengt on Mar 11, 2010 7:55 PM EST up reply actions

I was overstating it a little bit. I was thinking of the Pierre McGuire/Don Cherry contingent that has considered Mike Richards a God ever since he won gold in the WJC. So much of the commentary after the hit contained “but Richards is such a classy player and has never done anything like this before” as if that was an excuse.

Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.

by Rob Parker on Mar 11, 2010 8:27 PM EST up reply actions

Oh Cherry..well meh. Any time Grapes attaches a nationality to a player I kinda tone out, be the country Canada or otherwise.Talking about that I was talking to my Dad tonight —he’s a Leafs fan as are most Toronto-born folks of his generation and he watches HNIC every weekend but isn’t a Grapes fan in the least. I had sent him the video of Backstrom’s amazing shot blocking display last week and he was wowed by it. He even made the comment that he was disappointed that Cherry didn’t show that clip on Coaches Corner even though if a Canadian player like Brendan Morrow had done so, it would have been a given..

For every action, there is an equal and opposite criticism.

by Rather Bengt on Mar 11, 2010 8:36 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah he would have been all over it if that was Morrow. I don’t mind Grapes as much as some, but you have to take him with a grain of salt and keep it in perspective. He clearly has his biases but he does know the game.

Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.

Jesus Christ, this is funny:

Another reason the Caps might not live up to expectations? Most of their top players had career years last season. Will they be able to repeat?

Mike Green had 31 goals in just 68 games while his previous high was 18.

Nicklas Backstrom had 22 goals and 66 assists while scoring 14 and 55 his debut season. But he only had 11 goals and 16 assists the year before that in Sweden.

Alexander Semin also had a career high 79 points in just 62 games.

Alex “The Great” Ovechkin came close to his career high of 112 points, (he had 110), but missed three games.

Is it reasonable to assume that all of these players will continue to achieve career best numbers?

They forgot to invest in goaltending… now they got Emery at a bargain and he played ok for some games, but now he’s hurt (really badly…might be career ending…)

They picked up Leighton on waivers from Carolina… but so what, they picked up a goalie who was waived by a team at the bottom of the heap. Come deadline time, when they might be able to find a goalie, they have no cap room…

Guess what, they Flyers go to the playoffs and get outsted in 5 games by Ryan Miller and the Sabres…

So from a conversation last night

And continued on twitter:

If you’re a time-traveling GM from today and you’re going back in time to manage the TBL, are you taking Doughty or Stamkos? The original question on twitter turned into: Are you taking Stamkos/Hedman or Doughty/Whoever (although Duchene is probably your best pick if you already have Doughty on your blueline)?

Only YOU can prevent idiots from commenting!

by Knee high to a duck on Mar 11, 2010 9:24 PM EST reply actions

You can’t go wrong, really. I could see taking Duchene if you have Doughty, but Doughty/Hedman would be ridiculous to build a team around. If you can draft halfway decently in the first round after that you’d be fine, especially with Vinny and St. Louis already in the fold to carry the offense for the short term.

Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.

by Rob Parker on Mar 11, 2010 9:26 PM EST up reply actions

Doughty/Hedman crossed my mind, kind of Anaheim-East with Pronger/Niedermayer. Except you’ll have both guys as they grow into their primes. Pretty scary stuff if they can get any kind of offensive production at all.

Or you could go Stamkos/Duchene and be set at Center for a decade. How obscenely deep down the middle is that team with Vinnie/Stamkos/Duchene? Tampa actually has a couple of wingers who can score, too.

Only YOU can prevent idiots from commenting!

Only YOU can prevent idiots from commenting!

by Knee high to a duck on Mar 11, 2010 9:39 PM EST up reply actions

Hedman has the higher ceiling but I don’t know if that influences me because Doughty is better now and you don’t know if Hedman reaches his ceiling.

by Rob Parker on Mar 11, 2010 9:41 PM EST up reply actions

Doughty was playing top-4 minutes for Team Canada at age 20, I’m not sure how much higher Hedman’s ceiling is than that.

Only YOU can prevent idiots from commenting!

by Knee high to a duck on Mar 11, 2010 9:42 PM EST up reply actions

Hedman skates excellently and is much bigger. You give me a guy with Pronger’s size and elite skating? That’s a ridiculous ceiling. Doughty is awesome, but he doesn’t have the physical domination element that Hedman potentially has.

Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.

Actually, the higher ceiling is why I took the Stamkos side – for his ceiling. I think the difference between his ceiling and Duchene’s is higher than the delta between Doughty and Hedman, though I’ll admit that I haven’t seen Duchene enough to have a real solid basis for that notion.

the stat I saw earlier today taken from a point in Feb of last year when he started to turn it on towards the end of last season stated he was 2nd only to Ovie in goals scored since that date. He might have come along faster if not for the Melrose hiring fail.

by Davethecapsfan on Mar 11, 2010 9:43 PM EST up reply actions

Stamkos really is showing a pretty outrageously high ceiling right now. 50 goal guys don’t grow on trees and I don’t think 60 is out of the question for the kid somewhere down the road real soon.

I haven’t seen enough of Duchene to say what his true ceiling is, just that he’s been playing very, very well over the last couple of months.

On the other hand, Doughty just turned twenty and he’s a legitimate Norris Candidate going forward. He was really special at the Olympics and if there’s a guy that I could see challenging @GreenLife52 for offensive stats, it’s Doughty.

Where do you put Hedman’s ceiling? Pronger? Lower? Chelios (great defender, perennial Norris candidate, but not quite in the top echelon to ever play the position)? Lidstrom?

Only YOU can prevent idiots from commenting!

by Knee high to a duck on Mar 11, 2010 9:47 PM EST up reply actions

Hedman won’t be as mean as Pronger but he’s a better skater. I’m not sure who I’d compare that too.

by Rob Parker on Mar 11, 2010 9:59 PM EST up reply actions

I wasn’t paying close enough attention at the time, but didn’t Pronger develop his mean-streak later in his career, as he matured? I don’t think it’s unreasonable to say it could happen, is it?

I didn’t get to see the WJC last year, how did Hedman look against Team Canada? Was he controlling play with his skating or just being physically imposing or what?

Only YOU can prevent idiots from commenting!

by Knee high to a duck on Mar 11, 2010 10:05 PM EST up reply actions

Although I know we can’t keep up an 18-1-3 pace. But I’m sure we can probably get the 17 points in 9 games w/o too much problem.. If we win 9 of our last 15 games, that takes care of it. That’s a reasonably realistic pace.

I had initially suggested “Blade” in honor of Mark Belanger, the old Oriole. Then, someone suggested the French form of Razor which sounds appropro.

Another thing, the name Belanger is an alternate spelling of the French name Boulanger, which means Baker. Recall how Brooks always talked about “When you need bread, go to the bakery”. And now he’s sometimes on the line with a guy who’s name means Baker.

We also have a butcher, as well. Fleischmann is the German word for Butcher.

No candlestick makers, however. (The last name, Kendall, means just that.)

16-6 shots favor Nashville in the first period. 16-5 shots favor Nashville in the second. They certainly seem to be getting an early start on Shark spring hockey.

J.P. I feel your college b-ball pain today. UGH! I believe the bubble just burst for the Devils. Losing to a Dukie’s team just makes the pain worse.
