impressive: Belanger surveying his options before feeding Flash for the winner

unimpressive: Corvo

Definitely going to give him a few more games, but seeing Potsy out there definitely made me a little regretful.

Corvo looked good to me. He plays a high-risk, high-reward game, but he does a lot right. He had a couple of really remarkable breakout passes — stuff nobody but Green has the vision to do.

Thought Brooks Laich had a rather successful night, harassed Lagacy almost all night, and even got Lagacy to cry wolf about interference on the 3rd goal.

Belanger showing some real speed, almost Beast like. Nice to know on a team of already…well mostly after tonights showing, skate very and still have guys that skate even better.

Loved JT60 on the penalty shot, had he not stopped it no way we would we have scored on the PP immediately follow the shot.

Flash on the OT-GWG. Thought it was good he got this one back after being robbed by Legacy on a fat rebound from what seemed 3 feet out.

Green had a good night, obviously two goals, but two goals of great accuracy and of being in the right spot.

Who’s here supply writing to the associated press? The write ups on Green and Semin on their celebrations is hilarious.

Bad nights for Backstrom and Knuble in the +/- department. Respectively ended -1 and -2. Mean both were on ice for 2 goals tonight. Even worse Ovechkin was on for all 3.

Only Poti and Corvo end the night with a + of all the defense tonight. Goals we’re pretty spread out.

John Carlson had a good night being pretty competent and ended with an A.

Shooting alot? Flash and Laich both had 5 SoG tieing Ovechkin and Semin for the night. Interestingly all 4 players with 5 SoG finished with atleast 1 point tonight.

by MikeL-Caps on Mar 11, 2010 11:03 AM EST up reply actions

Corvo is worrying me a little bit. I feel like his plus minus is in the dumps since he’s joined the caps and he doesn’t have many points. Maybe it’s tougher for a defenseman to get acclimated to a run and gun system than it is for a forward. Hopefully he can turn it around come the playoffs. Regardless, I stand by GMGM’s moves…

~~~ R0cK D@ R3D ~~~
by Chaz-Capapalooza on Mar 10, 2010 11:17 PM EST reply actions
the only knock on the Corvo move is that he has more value to Carolina than he does to us because take him off Carolina and now you’ve got Pothier logging big PP minutes whereas add him to us and you don’t add many minutes. I still like him because he adds depth and I think he’ll figure out some of the defensive issues. (Remember Greenie was hurt during the playoffs!) One of the great things about our team right now is that no single defensemen is irreplacable, especially once we get Juice back.
by souldrummer on Mar 10, 2010 11:22 PM EST up reply actions
I agree, once juice is healthy I will have complete faith in our D to get the job done. It’s just the turnovers in our zone have cost us goals in the last 3 games and corvo was on the ice for a couple of them…actually, it seems like shaone morrisson was the one who turned it over everytime
Corvo’s an effective defenseman who turns the puck over frequently. It’s something to get used to, like watching Alex Semin. He’s a net positive, but he makes some risky plays.
by CapsFan75 on Mar 11, 2010 6:41 AM EST up reply actions
I’d say it definitely is harder for D to learn. This style really demands a lot of the defense to cover areas of ice rather than to individual players. For forwards I believe its like being unleashed from the normal.
 Corvo and Poti were the only forwards with + tonight, seem to be pretty good shut down line then.
Observations from the Sofa
I sold the tickets tonight as my boss is ok with my leaving early to go to the game once, or maybe twice a week on occasion. Three in one week is not going to happen.
Just a few things:
  • Flash shows he’s clutch and probably saves himself from being scratched again.
  • Fehr was missed tonight. A couple of times BMo was in front and missing it. Fehr likely gets those…
  • Steckel…sigh. I love his game, but tonight there were a couple of times when he had great chances and flubbed them. Ditto for Brads… A for effort for both and C- for the results, alas.
  • You can see why the Canes are moving up…they’re playing like they have nothing to lose, because they don’t
  • Glad to see Green find the net…
  • Also nice to see Semin score…
  • Unrelated note, there are 30 teams in major league baseball, and 29 of them have won spring training games…everyone but the Nats…. The Caps are this city’s only hope…
So 99 points. The Bolts have been locked out of the division title, and any 2 points gained on Atlanta will clinch the division. The Caps could take the ice on Friday as the division champions.
Let's go Caps!
And there are 29 teams that don’t have Stephen Strasburg. It’s spring training folks. The Nats will suck less than last year and show some fight. They’ll win maybe 70 games and show progress. Really folks rooting for the Nats now and respecting what they are trying to do is a lot like you Caps fans who kept the faith after the Bondra trade. We Nats fans have to deal with the damn trade for a pitching rental (brain cramp) that included like 3 all stars. One thing I respect about the NHL, they have stewarded the Coyotes with grace. MLB did not handle the Expos/Nats with grace. Sadly, the Lerners are like the anti-Ted when it comes to fan communication and friendliness. You’d never see Ted trying to sue the city for ticky tack problems with the stadium.
No, Corvo and Belanger are going to play until they drop. They have to get used to the system. Weren’t Corvo’s problems pinching in at the wrong times. This has got to be a real tough adjustment to go to this living on the edge style with such skill while scoring less because you don’t get PP time and are not in the top defensive pairing.
The team needs to stop giving up so many breakaways and odd man rushes. That concerns me more than any of the 3 goalies. I would not be surprised if Neuvy was not brought back up before long. The guy won the Calder Cup last year, and the MVP of the playoffs i think in the AHL. No matter who is in goal, the Caps play very very hard when they are down, and kick it up a few levels so I would be more worried if i was the team PLAYING the Capitals. I think everyone will be surprised how the Caps wll not be chasing teams from down 3-1 in the series this year and may actually win a couple series 4-1…
Bmo continued to struggle big time tonight. Since the break it seems like every game he has at least a couple of beautiful chances to put some trash in right in front of the net and once he gets the puck on his stick he looks completely lost. It’s just incredible how his hands turn into feet every time he gets a scoring chance.
Also, I am not at all a fan of BB putting out a PP without Laich or Knuble on the ice. He did it in the 2nd period and there was no traffic in front and the shift ended with Flash missing a beautiful rebound chance. Next PP Laich and Knuble are both on the ice and Green puts in a goal through the chaos that they were creating in front of the net. Imagine that.
And to think, this man authored a beautiful through the legs goal earlier this year. That has to be his high water mark as a Cap. The ship is definitely leaking now.
That was the lineup on the ice for Green’s 2nd goal. I don’t think Laich and Knuble need to be on at the same time every time or even most of the time, but one of them should always be out there for the net presence. Fehr can maybe be thrown into that group when he’s in the lineup.
I know most of you guys know this but Tyler Myers for the Sabres is a flippin’ physical freak. They just profiled him on OTF and is there any challenge for him for rookie of the year? Alzerson, you guys are up next to make the defensive splash in ’11, but probably will not have the same level of responsibility that Myers has in Buffalo. Will Carlson still be considered rookie eligible next year if he ends up playing every game the rest of this year?
did you have a free trial for center ice that ended in november? tavares and del zotto both long out of it. duchene will win the rookie points title. i’d guess it’s down to myers and jimmy howard.
Yeah, no way either of the NY rookies are finalists. I would give it to Howard, with Myers and Duchene coming in 2nd and 3rd.
The Detroit media has been singing the praises of Jimmy Howard, but I don’t think he’s the best rookie in the West, Matt Duchene is. It’s pretty much a 2 horse race between Duchene and Myers, with Myers having a bit of a lead right now. Last night, Myers was The Man.
Tavares is interesting, he’s going to end up with about the same numbers as Stamkos did in 2008-09. I would keep an eye on Tavares in 2010-11, as he may turn into a 35 goal guy.
Let's go Caps!
by MikeL-Caps on Mar 11, 2010 11:11 AM EST up reply actions
Duchene is a stud and is going to be great, but I think it is MUCH more impressive for a rookie goalie to be putting up top-10 stats than it is for a rookie forward to be scoring at well under a point a game. Forward is the easiest position to step into and contribute right away as a rookie, which is why I think that both Howard and Myers are having better rookie years than Duchene, even if Duchene may end up being the best player when their careers are done.
there’s two different intriguing aspects to this I feel.
1) I’d like to know when we started looking for this. Would this have been instead of Belanger? What would we have given up for Modano? In addition to Belanger?
2) He says that he wants to go back to the Stars and be in management. Wouldn’t a willingness to go through some inconvenience to add future talent and inventory to the organization be looked upon favorably should he desire to return to the Stars in a management capacity afterwards?
I can understand wanting to remain with the team and to stay. You hear how traumatic the trade was for Pothier and it makes sense how people would want to keep their jobs whenever possible.
If the Modano trade happens, then Belanger doesn’t come to DC… no need to bring him in. I suspect Dallas might have wanted a second this year and another pick next year for Modo. Of course, Dallas is in the playoff hunt for 2010…
Was it just me or did Theo look bad compared to his personal average on his side-to-side movements tonight (especially in the 1st and 2nd periods)? It was almost like he needed to sharpen his skates or something. Normally I don’t notice that kind of stuff but it just stuck out to me tonight.
Check out FFODC.COM and DCSportsPlus.blogspot.com!
by what Juneau about that? on Mar 11, 2010 1:03 AM EST reply actions
So actually a part of me was really concerned about him tonight. Towards the end of the game he seemed to be stretching at every stoppage in play and every opportunity…which I’d never noticed any goalie do before. Don’t know why he’d be stiff/sore, but is that a possibility?
So after a few games of tinkering
What are everyone’s playoff lines at this point?
8 – 19 – 22
21-18-28
16-14-25
24-39-15
?
Not ideal having Flash as a center, but I like having Chimera on that third line instead of the fourth.
by CaStauch on Mar 11, 2010 1:09 AM EST reply actions
I think Flash would be eaten alive as a center in the playoffs. I hate to say it, but I think Chimera and Bradley will have to alternate time.
Ovechkin – Backstrom – Knuble
Laich – Belanger – Semin
Fleischmann – Morrison – Fehr
Bradley – Steckel – Gordon
Chimera is the first forward off the bench.
Schultz – Green
Poti – Corvo
Morrisonn – Carlson
Erskine is the first defenseman off the bench, at least until Juice is healthy
by kingzman264 on Mar 11, 2010 1:21 AM EST up reply actions
We haven’t really seen but so much of BMo at 3C. My problem tonight was that BMo was 2C centering the Semin/Laich combo. To me, he’s lost that gig because we want more offense out of that line. I’d like to see Belanger center that line and BMo have a run of 8-10 games to find a combination that he can center effectively or prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that he’s a 4th line center on a team that already has solid 4th line options and deserves to be consistently scratched.
What about Chimera-Fleischmann-Fehr at 3rd line?
I kinda want Chimera on the ice, that mans speed eliminates every odd man rush when he is off the ice, prevents icings, creates his own rushes, and has a great shot.
I agree with you that I want Chimera on the ice. The other thing to remember about Chimera is that he will be willing to fight and check it it comes to scrapping. Isn’t the Chimera/Flash/Fehr line totally horrible at the face off dot in the playoffs?
I know i know. . .the FO % is not good. . .at all.
I only wish Flash would get better at the dot
by kingzman264 on Mar 11, 2010 1:24 AM EST up reply actions
Again, we don’t know that. BMo’s offensive ineptness is more exposed next to Semin than it may be on the 3rd line. That was the puzzler for me tonight. Why was Belanger 3C instead of BMo?
erskine has scored...now i can die in peace
by souldrummer on Mar 11, 2010 1:26 AM EST up reply actions
In my opinion, Chimera has to be in the lineup. The only benefit of having Bradley in there instead of Chimera is on the PK, and Stecks and Gordon are already gonna eat up most of those minutes.
by Alex Reed on Mar 11, 2010 1:20 AM EST up reply actions
I agree with this. He’s fast. He checks. He scraps. His game is simple and blue collar. To me he offers everything Bradley does except literally blood on the ice. Sentimentally, it will be hard for Bradley to accept being benched because of key playoff performances last year and symbolic toughness he’s shown. But it’s about putting your best forwards on the ice and Walker and Chimera are better.
If Gabby (quite reasonably) agrees, I think it’s much more likely that Chimera would be the starting left wing for the fourth line instead of Bradley.
Hell, Bradley may even get buried further. It’s not out of the realm of possibility to suggest Scott Walker would be the first forward off the bench should Chimera play 4th line LW (with Steckel and Gordon).
by CaStauch on Mar 11, 2010 1:22 AM EST up reply actions
I’m not ready to totally can BMo yet. If we’re serious about wanting more defensive responsibility in the playoffs, I think that we need to try 14-9-16 for third line and 25-39-24/(10). Some nights I would play 15 on the 4th line move Chimera up to the 3rd and bench Flash or BMo depening on matchups and how a series is going. Walker seems to have more skill than Brads but is still willing to scrap. I like Chimera too but I don’t like Flash at center and that’s why I don’t know what you do.
My thoughts on the game:
-The caps of the first half of the season are back. Scoring very early, extending the league and then letting the adversary come back. Hopefully they are gone till playoffs. I wish BMo of the first half were back, the one who stepped up when Ovie was injured, the one who was leader by example, the one who scored through the legs…
-With 9:20 left in the game, Ovie finally arrived from Vancouver. His lack of physical presence in past games was evidence of his absence.
-Well, Theo is going for Nr.1 Spot between the pipes,heh!?
