A cheer for Potsy when he hits the ice, and many more when the Caps light up the scoreboard. A recipe for a happy Wednesday.

Anybody want tickets? I don’t feel like going.
I look to the future because that's where I'm going to spend the rest of my life.
good grief
Three people who gave up tickets?!!
You guys should be grateful; I’d give up my left leg to science for consistent Preds tickets.

Yeah I don’t know why I can’t get rid of them. Sort of ridiculous.
I look to the future because that's where I'm going to spend the rest of my life.
I’m very tempted. Email in the profile and twist my arm a little.
Now helping to keep an eye on all things Gr8 at Alex Ovetjkin.
I have to twist your arm to take them for free? I’d rather light a cigar with them tonight then beg someone to take something for free.
I look to the future because that's where I'm going to spend the rest of my life.
(Except it will cost me $4 to email them to someone so it’s actually cheaper for me to let them go to waste but I was trying to do something nice for someone)
I look to the future because that's where I'm going to spend the rest of my life.
Doesn’t it suck that they charge you to email tickets? I hate that because sometimes I send mine to my sister in Salisbury. Of course she’s a college student, so I don’t charge her the $4

I work a lot of nights, so there is always some games that I can’t go to, but I have a long waiting list of people wanting tickets. Usually my parents take them or my sister and her bf. But it’s good to stay connected here. Everyone is willing to help their fellow Rinkers out.

I just have a 1.5 hour commute each way to get to the game and when there are 3 games in 1 week it’s too much sometimes. I make about 99% of the games and even schedule business trips around them.
I look to the future because that's where I'm going to spend the rest of my life.
Yeah, I kid somewhat. I live about 85 minutes from the Bridgestone Arena, which is what keeps me away more than ticket prices. I can afford the $12-20 tix, its that 160 miles in gas and food that kills me over time.

Hopefully will be back on the east coast for the last half of march, even though there is only one home game in that span.
Hopefully I can see the pens game.
Keep your head on a swivel
It’s open season on headshots (using the shoulder) for the rest of the season.
Well, it always was. Tonight’s no different than any other game this season.
by sixsevenfiftysix on Mar 10, 2010 6:07 PM EST up reply actions
No now you can be certain that you won’t get suspended for a late hit to the head, as long as you use your shoulder.
by Gin and Tonic on Mar 10, 2010 6:09 PM EST up reply actions
It’s not a big deal or anything, but the Cooke hit (and the Richards hit) were both legal when they happened, were both legal yesterday, and are still legal today. Absolutely nothing changed. Something may change, but those hits have always been legal in the NHL.
by sixsevenfiftysix on Mar 10, 2010 6:12 PM EST up reply actions
Brashear was penalized in game and suspended for a similar hit in last year’s playoffs.
Richards was penalized in game for interference. So it wasn’t a legal hit at the time.
Cooke’s hit took place in the Igloo. So it’s no wonder that a penalty wasn’t called.
NHL is not always bound by what is “legal” according to the rulebook when handing out suspensions. There was no rule for the Avery comment that got him suspended, but they used a blanket charge of doing something bad for the game to suspend him indefinitely (at the time).

Did Cooke take two strides and hit the guy, like Brash? No. Did Cooke talk smack to Savard before the game? No. So stop blowing it out of proportion, just because “it’s in Pittsburgh.”
"First Lady, I'm sorry I pimp slapped you into that china cabinet."
by Bald Pollack on Mar 10, 2010 7:04 PM EST up reply actions
Interesting question — on PTI they talked about the rule proposal for next year and asked why it has to wait. Said what about the “Avery rule” that was instituted overnight after he waived his stick in Marty’s face. I know that didn’t involve physical contact, but why would that be different?
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
The “Avery rule” was something that was intentionally and repeatedly going to happen. Headshots, usually, are not on purpose. I do think headshots should be penalized, this year, but I can see why it didn’t get the same treatment.
by DrinkingPartner on Mar 10, 2010 7:08 PM EST up reply actions
the “Avery rule” was something very concrete and not a rule that would be very subjective. Deciding what was a “hit to the head” and whether it was intentional, avoidable, caused more by the movement of the player taking the check, etc would be very subjective.
by Davethecapsfan on Mar 10, 2010 7:08 PM EST up reply actions
My guess is that they don’t think they can break it out (or start calling it) uniformly in a short enough time, and that it won’t be an issue during the playoffs.
"First Lady, I'm sorry I pimp slapped you into that china cabinet."
by Bald Pollack on Mar 10, 2010 7:08 PM EST up reply actions
True, although when do they ever call anything uniformly? I think there was mention of the competition committee as well. Just wondering on the delineation.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
See Dave below; it’s still going to be subjective, even with the clarification, so that makes either GM pressure or supplementary discipline that much more important (apparently they’re promising to be on the latter), since stopping gameflow to determine intent would be a game-killer.
Re: Competition committee, I think it’s less of that and more a rules committee, though I could be wrong.
"First Lady, I'm sorry I pimp slapped you into that china cabinet."
by Bald Pollack on Mar 10, 2010 7:15 PM EST up reply actions
The “Avery Rule” isn’t an actual rule. It doesn’t appear in the rulebook, and the GMs never voted on it. The NHL clarified for the officials that the act that Avery committed should be penalized under the Unsportsmanlike Conduct rule.
I am a hockey fan first, and a Caps fan second.
by iwearstripes on Mar 10, 2010 7:08 PM EST up reply actions
There has been lots of discussion that the play Cooke could have been called an “intent to injure” penalty, so if the league wanted to, they could just clarify refs call it like that the rest of this season.
This is NHL reffing we are talking about. The bar is pretty low on things like consistency, and if they did it, I doubt anyone would blink.
It was a home game, that’s all. Not trying to make it a Pittsburgh conspiracy.
by Gin and Tonic on Mar 10, 2010 11:10 PM EST up reply actions
A late hit could still result in a suspension.
I look to the future because that's where I'm going to spend the rest of my life.
Right, that too. The Cooke hit was “late” in the sense that the player didn’t have the puck anymore, sure, but it wasn’t a “late hit”.

If Chimmer’s groin wonks out again, the caps’ll have to skate without him. Fehr’s shoulders were bad in the playoffs last year – the caps had to deal with that too. Why not try now, when it essentially doesn’t matter?

Maybe so, but still stolen. Shea Weber has been one of “The Beast” or Shea Freaking Weber since 2007. He needs a better one, but thats what they are now. Not Chimera.

it is by far the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard at a Caps game
Karl Alzner + John Carlson = Carl Carlson!
Aside from a guy yelling that the Nats would get revenge for the Caps by beating the Pirates the following year…I agree with you.
by Davethecapsfan on Mar 10, 2010 7:48 PM EST up reply actions
The first time I heard it at Verizon, I was really confused. It’s a pretty common part of college hockey games, but I don’t think I’d ever heard during an NHL game.
Yeah, I don’t know why it doesn’t bother me during college games, but I get mildly annoyed with it at Caps games. Yet, it annoys me there.
Because these guys are pros? a lot of stuff can fly in college, but at pro games it seems silly.
Founding member of the Tyler Sloan Fan Club
Maybe that’s it. I mean, you throw fish, make signs identifying goalies, and sing with pep bands. I guess I think it fits in there, but I’m not a fan of it at Verizon.

Karl Alzner + John Carlson = Carl Carlson!
agreed. I don’t even follow baseball closely, but just the nostalgia factor of being a kid at camden makes me have to do it. Now if i were out of town and doing it by myself… then that might be dumb.
I never do it outside of O’s, Ravens and MD games. I used to not yell it at Maryland games, then I went there and all the students did it, so I thought, “ah what the hell?” I’d been doing it my whole life anyway.
Founding member of the Tyler Sloan Fan Club
exactly, wips and lenix. It doesn’t offend me but I know it certainly does some. I think there was an argument about it being a Balt O thing, which it is, but since DC now has a baseball team its dumb to keep doing it…but yea personally i don’t think the nationals are a pro team so I’ve been doing it since i was a kid too.
Joe Corvo understands we hold "Penguins" with as much disregard as theatre people do Macbeth.

its funny that you mention the nats being the home team because my whole life ive always enjoyed the “home” team. even in sports i dont follow (basketball being the least favorite of mine) but now that we have the nats in the dc area… they are not my team lol. course if the caps were still in us air arena then maybe i could argue at least you were in MD. Either way to those that it offends, I dont really see how you can get worked up over a tradition of the area you are in.
Maybe it’s because a lot of folks aren’t originally from this area!? DC is pretty ecletic when it comes to hometowns.

Yes, I’ve been to 4 games so far this season and have tickets to the Blackhawks game on 3/20. I used to be part of a ST group.
The Cards success and being in the desert really aren’t huge issues. This town is full of transplants from US & Canada who grew up with hockey. Plus, there are plenty of youth and HS programs here now.. Being in a town where the Suns (who play at the same time of year) have been King for decades is a bigger problem.
Being in a town with all 4 majors and a major college program, plus other sports makes things harder in terms of ST sales when a franchise isn’t winning.
Radio guys here are pretty supportive of the Yotes and the TV folks are well, they don’t dislike hockey. I wish we had some of the TV sportscasters who were here when the Yotes first arrived. That was a more knowledgeable group.e

Sasha had a great 1st period, AO looks good again and has an assist, Green giveth and he taketh away.

Sasha good breakaway, two good PKs, few good PPs (2/3? on the night), Theo looking good despite the score. First goal the defense didn’t get the puck away from a rebound off of Theo, second goal Green made a horrible pass up ice and let a 2 on 1 happen on the turnover and Green comes through on the last PP.

On a line with Semin and Flash, Bmo needs to play better O, especially when he’s got the puck with open teammates and continues to turn passes right over.

I have little to no confidence in Bmo right now, and the fact remains that he’s the acting 2C. If he’s bumped down, then I’ll give you that. But he’s not playing like a 2C, and hasn’t been in a long time.
by DrinkingPartner on Mar 10, 2010 9:13 PM EST up reply actions
I agree that he’s topped off (it’s kinda why Belanger was acquired), but assuming that Flash is a better suggestion means you’re getting a worse defensive player and faceoff man, and the team would be in worse shape over a playoff run, IMHO.
"First Lady, I'm sorry I pimp slapped you into that china cabinet."
by Bald Pollack on Mar 10, 2010 9:16 PM EST up reply actions
Has Bmo been winning faceoffs? I haven’t noticed if he has. I agree with you because there’s little to debate in terms of better potential D and FO ability, but I’m not seeing it lately, and I’d certainly rather see Flash’s O potential with Semin and Fehr/Laich than Bmo with the same mates.
by DrinkingPartner on Mar 10, 2010 9:22 PM EST up reply actions
What the point of (maybe) getting another goal if you’re going to give it (and possibly then some) back because your preferred 2C can’t backcheck?

Has Carlson been on the ice for any of tonight’s goals? Theo seems to me to be ok. They’ve asked him to spend a lot of time on the PK. They’ve given up a penalty shot. Screened on the PK and the Greenie turnover goal were definitely not his fault.

I dunno, I wasn’t terribly impressed with Theo on either the 2nd or 3rd goals tonight. Yea he was screened a bit but he was still a foot away from where the puck was shot. His lateral movement has been questionable to me. He was slow as hell on the second goal too. Varly over-commits because he’s somewhat raw while Theo seems to under-commit sometimes because, well, he’s not the most athletic goalie in the league.
the level of goaltending he’s offering should be good enough to win games for this team. yes, he can do more, but it’s been defensive irresponsibility and too many penalties more than anything else. there have also been some firewagon hockey stretches where he’s delivered tonight too.
erskine has scored...now i can die in peace
Schultz should have gotten down on the 2nd goal. More importantly, Green shouldn’t be making dangerous passes in his own zone.
President and sole member of the Erskine lobby.
This is kind of like exhibit A for those who say that his stats are inflated. 2 goals against a weaker foe (in that they are last place in our division) while making a boneheaded play that leads to a goal in our end and giving the other squad a penalty shot
erskine has scored...now i can die in peace
Agreed. He hasn’t been horrible, but he hasn’t exactly been great either. The Caps need a good 3rd out of him, because I think thier confidence isn’t very high at the moment.
Eh. The “yeah Theo wasn’t amazing but his defense didn’t exactly help” argument is what we always have to fall back to when Theo is simply not very good though. We’ve heard it before. I know the defense wasn’t incredible but look at what Turco did the other night, or what Miller does every night.
Our defense isn’t good enough to win with below average goaltending. Sorry.
I just realized that the last few games have been televised nationally and that the CSN feed has been used on more than one occasion. The “Double Nickel” Schultz nickname is now worldwide. haha

That’s kind of where my issue is. Come the playoffs I want to see Chimera on the ice every night. He adds toughness and a simple game that is key. So are we going to scratch Flash? BB is not going to scratch Flash. Do we scratch Fehr? I’d like to see a stretch of games where we give Belanger every opportunity to earn 2C while rotating Flash and BMo at 3C. We assume Belanger is better than BMo but we need to see whether he can handle it. Personally, I was in the include Flash in a deal for Hamhuuis camp around the deadline.
erskine has scored...now i can die in peace
by souldrummer on Mar 10, 2010 10:06 PM EST up reply actions
I’m with you on giving Belanger the 2C, so much so that I think they’ll make a push to re-sign him. At this point, if Flash sees the C position, it better be to incorporate other athletic skaters in the line every so often, because he’s not skilled and aware enough to mark more accustomed centers in a playoff series.
Sure, we’ll see the lineup shake out more over the next 10 days, but I’m guessing barring injury, the 3/24 lineup is the one BB wants to see starting the playoffs.
"First Lady, I'm sorry I pimp slapped you into that china cabinet."
by Bald Pollack on Mar 10, 2010 10:14 PM EST up reply actions
That’s kind of my thing. Chimera seems to lack the deking ability that Flash has and might make the line work. Also, is it possible Flash can avoid embarassing moments with 3rd line centers. I think the other thing is it depends on what kind of D pairings are behind that third line.
erskine has scored...now i can die in peace
by souldrummer on Mar 10, 2010 10:17 PM EST up reply actions
I’d assume the top 2 lines you suggest will be the top lines for the playoffs. (There may be the possibility of switching B Mo and Belanger for the lines.) I figure Fehr and Flash will probably be on the third line. While either can handle being on the 2nd line and are 2nd line caliber forwards, there’s no room there. Chimmer would move to the 4th line. But after that, the decision gets tougher.

I agree with this because he was good when you needed him to be good. He held onto the tie even in the face of penalties in third and an energized forecheck. If he can see the puck he’s been at least adequate. That was the kind of average performance on an off night for Theo that would have won the game against the Stars.

really?
"Hey anyway I can get my name out there 30 years from now is great," Steckel said. "They will be like, ‘Who was that guy?’ Then they’ll look at the stats and say, ‘Well, at least that guy was really good on face-offs.’"
Yep. That was my approximate transcription of comments referenced over the radio.

Getting (even more) tired of Lisa Hillary
Apparently none of us fans thought the Caps deserved this win. Uh, guess I missed that poll. It wasn’t the cleanest win by any means but they deserved it.
After the “Varlamov isn’t going to the Olympics” debacle, how exactly does she still have a job with CSN?
I’m glad i’m not the only one she thoroughly annoys

Isn’t the Nats lady like 50? She’s pretty old, right?
I’d take Hillary over Amber TheHOharris anyday. She’s awful.

Yes, I believe she is married to someone who works for MASN. I think her name is Debbie Taylor. She is horrible as an interviewer and asks inane questions. She offers no eye diverting appeal. Lisa tries to hard be tough. She needs a producer in her ear and guidance on asking better questions as much as anything. It would be nice if Comcast could find an American though to groom who is passionate about researching. There are subtle messages that are sent sometimes to Americans that it’s only a Canadian game and her Canadian nationalism heading into the Olympics was not desirable. Kind of like how Wilbon is really a Chicago fan at heart and he can be eager to find things wrong with Nationals sports team to provide “balanced criticism” from the home beat.

For educational purposes, where would Tyler Sloan have been in that photo had he found the keys to the press box?

and he wouldn’t be on a PP since that was the play leading to the penalty shot

Just read the AP recap. This was a funny excerpt:
As many goals as they have scored this season, one would think they’d know how to celebrate. Yet here was the tally after the first period: two goals, two pratfalls.
After Semin scored with his backhand on a breakaway, sprung by a 50-foot pass from Brendan Morrison, the Russian wing lost his balance and spun awkwardly like a sausage, a bit of panic in his face as he slid toward the boards.
Then, when Green made it 2-0 with a wrister from the right circle on the power play, the defenseman skated to the corner and completely lost his footing, looking like a first-time skater at a community rink as his body plopped onto the ice.
The Hurricanes got on the scoreboard 18 seconds after Green’s goal when Dwyer scooped in a loose puck by the crease. The Carolina’s credit, everyone stayed upright during the celebration.

Perhaps once you are done clowning our celebrations you can master the basics of standard written English oh mighty AP.
But I’m glad they were clowned. Is Ovie in charge of the kangaroo court? This sounds like a job for the Bog to find out what the fines are for embarassing the squad with Nationals-esque Celebration Fails.
Were those the first goals for Greenie and Semin post Olympics? I know it was Semin’s. I don’t think it was Greenie’s, though.

I kinda see Brooksie in charge of the kangaroo court and fineage and so on. BTW I noticed brooks got an injury A when Poti was out prior to the Olympic break.

Host is calling out Caps fans for booing Pothier and Osala. It was truly bush league to boo Pothier. Was it bad? We ought to be thanking him for having enough value to be tradable for Corvo.

I’m watching the postgame interviews now. Whatever Nicky’s weight is listed at, it’s off by at least 15 pounds. His shoulders are massive.

Pothier looked so sad in his interview.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
Also, Bruce so funny on Green: he got two goals and an assist, but the assist was to the wrong team.

BB’s got to be a tough on Greenie for that kind of stuff. It helps stick up for Theodore and emphasize that no amount of offensive production is enough to erase lackadaisical defensive play

but does he get scratched next game? How far up the rotation do the scratches go? I suppose it could be him and Belanger next if everyone is fair game.
Hopefully they field the best team possible against Chicago and Pittsburgh. Those are nice measuring stick games and both on national TV.
I predict the next scratches are sitting out at least two games – BB will use the TB game to test drive his Chicago lineup.
Walker for sure and possibly BMo, not sure what BB wants up the middle.

You never know what BB’s going to do. The flip side is he might try another combination on Friday and then go with his “playoff” lineup for the premier matchup. I’d be shocked if BMo is scratched Sunday so Friday might be a good bet.

I don’t see Brooksie sitting anytime soon. Doesn’t he have a consecutive games streak going along with Nicky? I can’t remember the last time he sat with an injury and/or was scratched

Zero reason to sit Brooks. Not. Happening.

No way he’ll stratch Laich. None. I’d be furious!
But I believe he dose because the caps pr was trying to build him up as the iron man. It would seem by his career stat log he has gone 303 straight games as a capital. It would appear he started late in the 2005-2006 season being called up after a few games with the bears, then logged two seasons of 82 games and currently 66 games this season.
