Caps recall three from Hershey

"The Washington Capitals have recalled left wing Quinin Laing, defenseman Tyler Sloan and goaltender Semyon Varlamov from the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League (AHL), vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today. All three had been assigned to the Bears on Saturday; Laing and Sloan were on conditioning stints." - Release

Not surprised… The next game at Hershey conflicts with the team travelling to Buffalo tomorrow for the Caps date with Olympic hero Ryan Miller, who will perhaps get a shot at playing the Pens Tuesday night.

More likely Lalime starts Tuesday so they can do something for Miller Wed. night in Buffalo before the game.

Let's go Caps!

??? Now it makes even less sense.

Welcome back. Kettler crease just got a little crowded. Maybe Stretch can dress again and they can run two rinks for practice.

Unless…is Neuvi still hurt?

Now helping to keep an eye on all things Gr8 at Alex Ovetjkin.

He took practice on Saturday… I don’t think, if he is, that it’s that bad…

I need a snappy signature...

Unless..

Unless Theodore is about to get traded…..

Aw, conditioning stint aside, they really didn’t need to bring two of those guys back up.

by TFG on Mar 1, 2010 9:27 AM EST reply actions

Conditioning stints are limited in duration; they have to send through waivers if they want to leave them down there. If they wanted to leave them down there, don’t you think they’d have sent them through waivers to begin with? Nah, if you think about it, it had to be those three.

IIRC they can be two weeks in length, right? Anyways they still have a cap hit, so might as well get them with DC, I guess. Helps in case someone gets traded, so they have someone who can step right in and do a semi-competent job

It’s up to three games, IIRC.

And the third game is the same day as BUF so they brought ’em home. Plus the team needs to see each other in one place finally.

I’m aware of he ramifications of a conditioning stint, – i’m merely suggesting there’s players I’d take from Hershey over Sloan and Laing in a heartbeat.

Okay. Was hoping for Varlznerson but now that I think about it, how could it be anything else?

Varlznerson, I like that. Those three always seem to be associated with each other. I am just hoping Sloan gets traded along with Pothier for someone like Volchenkov or Jackman. I was thinking Leopold, but the pens picked him up this morning for a second rounder.

Good to have you back and healthy Varly!

I actually think that Sloan + Fehr or Flash for Hamhuis and maybe a pick to even out the deal if necessary is a very realistic scenario and one that benefits both teams. Remember that Nashville operates under a super-tight budget and that’s why they can’t re-sign Hammer to begin with. They’d like either of those.

Evgeny Kuznetsov hams it up as he joins the Russia men's national team for the "Sweden Games" leg of the Euro Hockey Tour in Helsinki, Finland.

There's a bit of controversy as their game against the Finns is scheduled to be played in Helsinki's outdoor Olympic Stadium. Where the daytime temps are currently approximately minus-15 degrees Celsius, with periodic heavy snow.

This interview with head coach Zinetula Bilyaletdinov is fascinating, as he frets about the weather and especially when the reporters press him on the leaked reports that Kuznetsov will be centering the top line for Team Russia, just weeks after his 20th birthday.
