I want to know what DAL gives up. I just don’t see how Lehtonen makes them that much better if ATL wants roster players back. Seems kind of desperate on DAL’s part.

Well ATL didn’t want just picks for Kovalchuk because they still want to run for the playoffs. Maybe it’s different with Lehtonen because he wasn’t adding to the team on ice lately, but still seems weird. Now DAL just has 2 unreliable goalies. DAL is young enough in the core that I think they may be better off just stripping down and rebuilding now.

I’ve just taken to ignoring him. It’s easier that way. I really don’t want to hear the “You stole our team!” rant any more. I didn’t steal your team, dumbass. I’ve spent YEARS putting up with shit for being a Caps fan, for that damn 1998 sweep, all of it. I’m savoring every fucking second of this season. It’s beautiful.

Blues have a lot more youth in their major contributor roles as well. DET buries theirs so if you looked at age per minute of TOI it would be more stark I think.

Anyone else think the Blues are a little boring to watch? I know they have a lot of young talent but their game seems to have no flow. Maybe that’s just the Red Wings slowing them down? Or the fact that I’m spoiled by the Caps?

yeah. they need to STOP LOSING. I’ve lost count on how many times they’ve blown a 2 (or more) goal lead this season. And like I said, their big guns need to step up, and step up now. They’re not producing at all.

I like this post. You’re one of the first people I’ve seen anywhere who isn’t leaning on injuries as an excuse for their play. I know it sucks having Kronwall, Holmstrom and Franzen out, but that can’t be the only thing wrong in Detroit.
Wings fans can whine and whine and whine, but the Caps lost ~350 man games to injuries last season and still played much better than the Red Wings are this season (who will probably lose 350-400 man games). And that’s not just merely a product of playing in the “weaker” Eastern conference and the SouthLeast.
Datsyuk leads the team with 47 points (and 16 goals). That’s less points than Nicky B has assists! Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Lidstrom, those are the guys who they needed to step up and lead the way and play up to the level everyone knows they can play at. They haven’t and nothing can excuse that. It wasn’t injuries, the refs, or Bettman who put the Wings in those hole, it was the lack of players doing their jobs.
As a team, all I’ve heard is “Boo hoo, we have so many injuries, we’ll be better when we get our players back.” Well, they’ve been getting their players back, and I don’t see any difference. they need to decide, from Mike Babcock on down, if they’re going to continue to blame it on injuries and bad bounces, or start playing Red Wing hockey and start winning some damn games.

Incidentally, they looked like worldbeaters against the Caps. That’s the best I’ve seen them look all year but they can’t seem to put that kind of effort together consistently. Strange.
you’re right, they don’t put those sorts of games together consistently. And, just like the Caps game, they far too often let other teams sneak back in. They’re not producing enough offense to let the other team put up 3 goals late. their GF/G is a mere 2.52 (New Jersey scores more!), while their GA/G 2.59.
A big complaint from the slightly sane fans is that the team very rarely puts together a 60 minute effort.
I don’t know what to make of them. They’re maddening, and the constant whining from their fans makes me want to scream.

Blame Canada
IMO the Maple Leafs and the Red Wings are suffering from the same problem – their coaches are also running the Olympic teams for USA and Canada.
I’m not offering this as an excuse for them but clearly (and particularly in Babcock’s case) ther is an inordinate amount of outside pressure distracting them from the little details that matter so much in coaching.

Is anyone here talking about Carter’s hit on Salmela? When Mike Green had no reputation but was suspended three games for a hit that didn’t cause injury, many of us accepted it on the condition that the league become consistent about punishing head shots. So…can we get put-upon and angry again?
