Welcome back, Hoss.

Oddly enough, I got to watch the"Sports Jobs" episode last night that had Junior Seau assisting the Caps equipment managers. One of his tasks was to help Neuvy pack for his trip back to Hershey. Thanks Michal! Enjoy your Olympic break. Maybe we’ll see you playing on the 27th.

We could definitively say that Hershey needs another goalie like a hole in the head. They now have Neuvy (who’s proven himself in the NHL) and Holtby.

With Neuvy down in Hershey, they have no choice but to have a different goalie show up during their winning streak. Superstitions be damned.

Are they going to send Holtby all the way back down now that Neuvirth’s back or split time? Does GMGM consider dealing one of the goalie prospects as part of a deadline deal?

Hershey doesn’t have Neuvy. He is still with the Caps. I don’t think Varly is game-ready at this point. If they send Neuvy back after how he’s contributed to the streak, they are nuts.

I thought about shaving my beard this morning. Then I thought, “no… let’s wait until the next Caps game. If they lose, THEN I can shave.”

I also thought, “you know, it might be nice to have the beard if I need to shovel the walk tomorrow morning.”

So my reasoning wasn’t entirely superstitious.

This is good news, as he will be able to get a game in (presumably vs. Ottawa, Theo will get the start in Montreal).

Does Neuvy have to sit for the Olympic break, or has he played enough in Hershey that he can be playing there part of the time? Considering the AHL has several 3-nights-in-a-row sequences, having Neuvy and Holtby there will help them.

Let's go Caps!

The current send down (of Neuvy) should insure he has enough games, if he doesn’t already.

Were you there? I was told by several people he had a rough first, and then really settled. Sounds a lot like Theodore the other day. The argument that he “only had one AHL game” bugs the Hell out of me, because, well, let’s say this all continues, and he never starts because he’s “Only started one NHL game”. He’s going to have to start at some point again in the season, preferably before the break, and honestly, I could care less about the streak. The streak won’t matter in three months, and it sure as Hell won’t matter in July. Regardless of how the playoffs pan out, I know I won’t be looking back and pointing at this part of the season and thinking about how sweet the good times were.

I completely agree. If he is healthy enough to play in Hershey he is healthy enough to play up here. He is ready. The kid is probably exploding inside wanting to get back on the ice. It’s not physical, it’s not mental. He is ready. The streak means nothing (well, it should mean nothing…)

by Bushwood Bushwhacker on Feb 9, 2010 10:28 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I read the same reports you did. I have no problem letting Varly practice with the big boys. Since they are keeping Neuvy on the roster, they obviously don’t think Varly is ready (at least as of today). Hershey doesn’t have a game until Friday so it made no sense keeping him there for the week.

I couldn’t care less about the streak, either. When it ends, it ends, and I won’t sweat it a bit. If it continues, that’d be OK as well.

This team will succeed or fail in the spring and early summer. Everything the leadership does should be pointed at the playoffs, imo, the streak be damned.

We’ll never know that before spring, so scrapping the streak because it might cost us a cup is a bit premature, IMO.

That said, I agree that the streak is less important than the playoffs, but it will benefit everyone to have one goalie start each game. Motivation and a show of trust for all of them.

The streak has basically locked up the first seed for the team, so it’s not like it’s been just a sideshow.

The goals right now should be to stay healthy, maintain discipline in executing the system, and address the question marks (goalie) and problem areas (PK and defense) that confront the team.

The team that holds the record winning streak was eliminated in the second round that year. The team that holds the second-longest winning streak won the Cup in four games. So there’s no way to know, and the players seem to have the best approach: focus on winning each game as it’s played.

Start him against...

Habs or Sens? Considering Theo wasn’t stellar against the Pens, and the Sens would quite the comeback start considering how well they are playing… I see it as:

Habs – Varly
Sens – Theo
Blues – Theo (unless Varly plays considerable better in his game, or Varly if either game is a loss)

Unless it’s Theo against the Habs & Varly against the Sens. And who ever played better this week gets the start against the Blues.

I still put both of Crosby’s goals on our defense.

The first one was on Sloan.
The second was on Poti, for doing the exact same thing Sloan did.

You simply cannot just hand the puck to Crosby on a silver platter while trying to make a breakout and NOT expect it to end up in the back of your net. Period.

Poti’s supposed to be our veteran defenseman, but his clearing and breakout attempts are more faily than I like.

Failed clear, bad coverage, good passing, good finish. Pretty standard.

Failed clear attempts almost always lead to chances because it’s hard to maintain coverage when you’re anticipating getting in position to support a breakout. Doesn’t make it excusable, but it happens most of the time.

You said exactly what I was thinking… I really think folks here have it wrong until he looses it. By my thoughts, Theo is this team’s #1A goaltender and personnaly I hope he doesn’t loose that job until July when he’ll still be looking for $4+M as an UFA – since that will mean in addition to his prior Hart and Vezina he’ll have Stanly Cup ring and we will have had a parade to go to near 7th and F….

The Habs just smoked Pittsburgh before playing us, though. They’re not an easy out. Maybe have Varly vs. Blues and Theo in the other team. Did Neuvirth need any more games down in Hershey before the break? Wonder if that was a factor for timing of this decision.

Neuvy still needs two more games with Hershey if I remember. But he is still with the Caps, they haven’t sent him back yet. I just don’t see playing Varly before the Olympics. He’s been out for over two months and looked shaky in Hershey in his one game.

I agree, I think the recall is so the rest of the coaching and medical staff here in DC (in addition to Irbe) can take a good look at Varly BEFORE clearing him to go to the Olympics… I know that could/would be an ugly debate but I don’t think anybody – either the Caps or the Russian Hockey Federation want him to rush back to make this Olympics since there’s little doubt in everyone’s mind he’s part of their futures be it here in DC or in Sochi….

Honestly, Neuvirth isn’t where he needs to be, and the pecking order is clearly Varlamov unless he’s off/needs rest/is hurt, Theo if Varly can’t go, and Neuvirth if bad shit happens. Not where he needs to be? During the streak his numbers are better than Theo’s. Varly hasn’t seen NHL action or practices in two months. He’s not ready. Finally, someone said it. I’ll admit, I’m wrapped up in the streak as much if not more than most. But I can’t stop thinking about the ‘07-’08 Patriots – it seemed like they spent all their energy in the regular season keeping that streak going, and that ultimately did them in against the Giants. Not a perfect analogy, but in the long term, this streak ending will be a burden off of our shoulders.

So what if Varly plays and loses? What’s most important is to get him ready for May.

Now that we’ve beaten the Penguins twice during said streak, I won’t cry too hard if we lose. I’d like to see us beat the record, but realistically, we have to win all three games in February (Canadiens, Senators, Blues) and then win our first game in March after the Olympic break, which is harder than it looks.

Yes, May is more important, but putting one in the Pens’ face by stealing their record would be sweet too.

Recommended for the comment about the streak – what matters is May and June…if/when we get there…

That said I don’t consider Varly ‘s development that far ahead of Neuvy’s both are excellent young goaltenders. They have different styles which is frankly part of the appeal of having both them on the roster since the video breakdown/scouting reports on each of them has to be pretty drastically different….making it that much harder for opponents to prepare for facing the Caps…BTW add Theo who IMO (roundly disputed by others round these parts) is the Caps #1 goaltender right now, to that mix and you have a third style and look you have to prepare for…

No, that’s not it at all. You assumed that because normally when one goalie up, it’s assumed one goalie goes down. We’re not telling Neuvy to let the door hit him on the ass, we’re saying that the goalie depth chart we have and has been really established (Varly → Theo → Neuvy) is able to be resumed. Next year, Neuvy is the back up on this team, unless he does something sensational and takes the starting job, or there’s a significant injury. I love Neuvy, and honestly, I think he’s going to have a more successful long term career than Varlamov, but right now, a healthy Varly is better than a healthy Neuvirth.

I’m going to pull out some stats really quick.

Varlamov and Neuvirth have both played in 16 games this year. One has faced 449 shots, and the other 450. I’d say it’s fair to compare the two.

One has a GAA of 2.21, the other 2.69. One has a save percentage of .924, the other .916. One is 12-1-2, the other is 9-4. One was in Calder Trophy discussions (Or neglected because people forgot he was a rookie), the other is just playing well enough to keep a streak going.

Yeah, I’ll tell you which one I want going.

I want the goalie who isn’t still recovering from two injuries, including a knee that he’s injured twice in the past two seasons.

Playing Varly now is rushing him. He’s had only one game—at the AHL level—since being off for two months, and he’s a goalie who relies on his atheticism to cover his mistakes. Neuvy has done nothing during the streak to be sent down in favor of a goalie in that condition. What Varly did three months does not count right now.

by Forsch31 on Feb 9, 2010 10:56 AM EST up reply actions   1 recs

But it’s not rushing him. He’s had a rehab start, and the AHL isn’t so much worse than the NHL that a goalie who can play in the AHL isn’t ready for the NHL. If anything, the team has really relaxed and let him take his time.

One rehab start, one in which most reports…including the coach…said he was shaky at the beginning. And the team didn’t relax—Varly injured his knee during his first attempt at a rehab start while recovering from his initial injury.

Throwing a guy who’s been out with injuries for two whole months into an NHL game after just one non-stellar rehab start is rushing, by any stretch of the imagination. Which is why the team is carrying three goalies. Varly’s been called up to practice with the team and get up to game speed. Neuvy’s still here to play.

Ohfer.

It’s a fairly simple equation:

Smitty and Irbe are going to Canada. Period. You don’t go to Canada without your head trainer and your goalie coach.

Varlamov wouldn’t be playing in Hershey before Friday anyway.

Take him to Canada, let him benefit from the trainer and the goalie coach, and let everyone else benefit from them too. It’s not fair to the other two goalies to send Irbe to Hershey to coach Varlamov, and it’s not fair to the team to send Smitty to Hershey to evaluate him or assist in evaluating him or whatever Smitty does that way. So just haul them all to Canada and be done.

People are making way too big of a deal over this.

I’m not making a big deal about it, let me explain.

1) Varlamov, if healthy, should be on the top team.
2) Yes, you do want your goalie coach and top trainer in Canada

The point is playing him more in the AHL isn’t going to make him “more ready” for the NHL then it would if he was playing those AHL games with the caps. Varly is already an NHL goalie and the difference from the goaltender position from the AHL to the NHL is not of leaps and bounds IMO.

I watched the Avs game last night and saw the fight where Koci broke his hand. He landed what seemed to be 5 solid rights and then just stopped. He skated off the rink looking down at the ice and stepped into the tunnel to the locker room. Not one Avs player looked at him as he skated to the bench let alone patted him on the back.

Regardless, in the future Neuvirth’s going to go down, and (hopefully) Alzner comes up. If not Alzner, than Perreault or A. Gordon or someone. You don’t need three goalies on your active roster at all unless one is rehabbing.

I have to agree to that. I was underwhelmed by the difference in numbers posted earlier by WhiterMage, but Varly instills a (potentially imaginary) confidence in me when he plays, and seems to do the same for the team.

Neuvirth’s numbers have had a nice jump during the streak and I certainly won’t count him out as our real goalie of the future, but I think it’s got to be Varly at the moment. Since bouncing back from some early season hiccups, he’s been nothing short of a brick wall.

I’d be less overwhelmed by the numbers if it wasn’t for the goalies that the numbers they have are comparable to.

Neuvirth’s 2.69 and .916 put him around Marc-Andre Fleury (Who’s having a down year), Brent Johnson, Dan Ellis, Jonas Hiller, and Marty Turco. Those guys are all serviceable keepers, but hardly in the NHL’s elite (MAF’s only argument is “hay i gotz a ring”)

Varlamov’s 2.21 and .924 put him behind only (Including only goaltenders who’ve played more games than him) Niemi, Rask (Defensive system in Boston makes goalies look good), Miller, and Kiprusoff. Varly’s numbers are actually just a little better than Nabokov’s.

I would argue that Varly’s presence back there is a confidence booster, and frankly, I’d argue that it makes games easier to watch for me as well.

but its extremely rare for an NHL team to carry 3 goaltenders, especially when one or more could be sent to the AHL without fear of loss to waivers

Its difficult to practice with 3 as we saw when the Caps acquired Huet back in 08.

Right On...

Re: Its difficult to practice with 3 as we saw when the Caps acquired Huet back in 08.

It’s hard for three goalies to get enough ice time even with practice to stay sharp – just ask Brent Johnson….

Also given the questionable health of Varlamov, the young age of both Varly and Neuvy, and the way Jose Theodore has turned it on lately I don’t think even those who are less enthusiastic about Theo here would suggest that GMGM include Theo in any sort of pre-trade deadline discussions even though (actually perhaps spoecifically because) he is an UFA this summer…

So that would suggest that at some point one of the two (Varly or Neuvy) would get sent back down to Hershey. I can’t imagine why that wouldn’t be Neuvirth for no other reason because while Varly is sitting on the bench or playing in the Olympics, Neuvy could be getting some more playing time and staying in shape as well. I’d also like to see both Irbe and Theo go to Hershey and at least practice and take some shots there so everyone stays in the current vibe…in fact if it’s allowable I wouldn’t mind seeing some more Caps who aren’t going to the Olympics and practicing in Hershey over the break…

Is such a thing even allowed under the League rules and CBA, assuming it’s voluntary for the players involved – anyone know?

by markbona-capsfan99 on Feb 9, 2010 12:39 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

An NHL player has to have played a certain number of games in the AHL prior to the Olympics in order to qualify to play in the AHL during the Olympics. I think Neuvy was called back to DC last Friday prior to his having qualified. None of the other players on the current Caps roster qualify.

sorry if I wasn’t clear. I think most assumed a Neuvy would be sent down because of the issues having 3 goalies can present. As noted above, I think it makes sense to let Valry practice with the NHL club for a few days.

Who knows, they might even send him back down for another start or two this weekend. Hershey’s next games are Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Give Varly a few days practicing against NHLers, send him back down for some in game action

Thank you for working out the equation. Saved me the trouble.

For those interested, here are the equations:

Let F = Temperature in Fahrenheit
Let C = Temperature in Centigrade

   5/9 (F – 32) = C
   F = C

Rocking the Red since 1975

by CapsFan75 on Feb 9, 2010 5:24 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

There is a much easier way to do the C —> F translation.

C*2
Subtract 10% from the product of step 1
Add 32
The result is the temp in F.

The formula written out is as follows: ((C*2)*.9) + 32 = F

Example: 20 degrees Celsius. 20 × 2 = 40. Less 10% (4) is 36. Plus 32 is 68 degrees F.

Does anyone else think the Caps are going to give Varly a start for his benefit, with the hopes Russia gives him a couple of games in the Olympics? I would think Russia would be skeptical to play Varly at all, but with an AHL and NHL start they may give him a couple of games.

It seems the Caps have been very good to their players when it comes to personal desires all season long. Playing the likes of MP, Alzner, and Giroux in their hometowns. Sending players back and forth so they can participate in AHL all-star games ect. While in most cases the timing has allowed for those moves I feel this move is out of the respect for Varly and the Olympics

by Garyland1177 on Feb 9, 2010 10:53 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

I doubt the Russians will give Varly even a sniff during the Olympics. International play just means too much, and with the way they got embarrassed at the WJC, they’re going to be very serious about the Olympics. Nabokov will be 38 years old in 2014 and Bryzgalov will be 33.

It’s my impression that Varly is basically going on a field trip to see what he could be doing in 4 years.

Although some people might debate on whether they are the #2 or #3 goalies. Yes, we are the team on a winning streak without a clear #1 goalie.

Like our farm team before us who racked up an even longer winning streak with their #1 goalie up in Washington and essentially won the vast majority of that streak with a green kid who was slated for South Carolina, with the backup goalie barely playing at all. (And then Hershey lost once and started still another winning streak.)

Maybe. Bruce hasn’t been big on advertising his plans for starting goalies. I could imagine Bruce answering the question "will Theo, Varly or Neuvi start tonight?’ with “yes”. Didn’t he respond to a question about starting goalies at one point with “we’ll have one in net”?

Hejda

Is anyone a buyer for this guy?

D Jan Hejda
52 games
3 goals
9 asists
12 points
+/- -12
28 PIMs

He’s having an off year in the +/- category, but I have to consider who he’s playing with. Other D men on the Jackets (assuming they are sellers) have better numbers and are younger, but I’m not sure out of the bunch who would gel best with our guys. I just don’t know them well enough to make a pick.

Is Tim Thomas ripe for picking out of Boston? He might come out of Vancouver inspired if he knew he would be joining the juggernaut. Goalie talk might be moot in DC now that Varly’s coming back but picking up Thomas might relieve pressure on Varly and give him the AHL time he might need to be ready for next season. I just don’t want to rush him back again and if we are the team that we think we are, we’re gonna’ be around sniffing the cup for the next 3-5 years easy. I think of Varly as my 6 month CD and need to let him mature with Neuvy a bit more. Yeah, our crease is crowded and it might even be a bit distracting for the team. A move for Thomas might settle that for a while. I’m just not feelin’ these young guys for the playoffs. Fleury did it last year (duh) but I think that was the exception.

Hejda and Thomas might be the tonic for a playoff winning run— not just a push to go deep. I still feel that this side of the blue line needs more stength/depth/cowbell.

Does GMGM go for anyone before the 3rd?

by jordanDC on Feb 9, 2010 1:59 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Except for one thing...

There were three goalie candidates in training camp.

Neuvirth’s injury took him out of the running and made the decision easy to make. Otherwise, it might have been Theodore and Neuvirth from the beginning.

We just don’t know.

As for Varlamov vs. Thomas? Varlamov, hands down.

But among our three goalies, the decision was rendered moot by Neuvirth’s training camp / pre-season injury, which eliminated him from the running.

I need a snappy signature...

I agree that it seemed to be a three-man race coming out of camp, but I personally doubt that they would have went with Neuvy over Varlamov after the latter’s NHL playoff performance months earlier.

this is smart by BB, IMO

the russians coaches will like this move and while I realize BB is as canadian as they get, he still has a few prominent russians to appease on his own club team. It also makes sense for us. Granted he is healthy, Varly should get a start here in one of the next few games, preferably vs Mon b/c i feel they struggle to put as many shots on net Ottawa will. i think this would be a big sign of confidence in Varly, and thats something that should not be understated when involving a 21 yr old goalie.

Montreal is currently shorthanded at the moment anyhow. Cammelleri, their leading goal scorer is out for the season, plus they have other people missing as well.

Varly’s first game in the NHL was against guess who — Montreal.

Montreal’s missing a bunch of guys:

Andrei Kostitsyn (knee surgery)
Paul Mara (upper body)
Mike Cammalleri (MCL)
Marc-Andre Bergeron (leg/foot)
Benoit Pouliot (upper body)

that amount to about 40% of their scoring power, but I wouldn’t put the team on the shelf just yet… I just hope they don’t catch the Caps with their drawers around their ankles.

Varly is actually no stranger to being the “new” goalie used during historical winning streaks. Hershey was on a tear and on its way to a franchise record winning streak when he did his earlier (ill fated for him) rehab start. He played well, won the start, and the streak kept going for longer.
