Ovechkin, Backstrom named 1st, 3rd Stars of the Week

"With a national TV audience watching on NBC and a full house at the snowy Verizon Center looking on, Ovechkin lit up the ice on Super Bowl Sunday, capping yet another brilliant week.... He ended with 6 goals and 10 points in four games (all victories) while going plus-6. Sunday's hat trick moved him past Sidney Crosby and Patrick Marleau into first place in the goal-scoring race with 42 (he's the first 40-goal scorer this season).... As great as he is, Ovechkin is hardly a one-man show. Backstrom, his center, is a key cog in the Caps' juggernaut -- and he was almost as good as his linemate last week, scoring twice and adding eight assists. With 73 points in 59 games, Backstrom is on his way to a 100-point season of his own."

And I disagree with that sentiment. Feel free to ask why and I’ll gladly expound, but know that I’ll ask for your argument … the cases for it, evidence, etc.

Technically, Sid tied for the goals lead with the two he scored in the first period.

milbury's Sweden graphic

Contemplating the misery of how to cope with the milbury insect throughout the Olympics. I will miss Joe and Craig. Any word on the rest of our team while the Olympians are tending to patriotic duties in B.C.? My family from Ireland is visiting and would love to see their beloved Caps at the Iceplex — hoping a few of our many stars will let the pucks fly at some point during the long break.

According to Tarik’s chat, the players aren’t allowed at kettler during the break.

not even to skate on their own?

Anyways, Greenie said he’s headed off to the Caribbean for break. He wants to be far from Olympic hockey. Can’t say I blame him.

Flying Cloud, it’s not quite the same, but can I suggest taking the family up to Hershey?

Didn’t he word it that they can’t use the team facilities? So I guess they could take in a public skate if they wanted to.

Sure.

to be fair, a lot of milbury’s picks for “top 6” were odd. doughty made the canadian 6, and datsyuk was omitted from the russian 6.

but am I presuming correctly that you’re either a) an architect b) an engineer c) a contractor or d) someone in the construction industry?

DVR’s = Less Milbury. I humbly suggest that all my Caps brethren try it.

by mechanicsville on Feb 8, 2010 2:55 PM EST up reply actions

Right, I think he meant “interesting players to watch” not necessarily the best players on each team.

Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.

by Rob Parker on Feb 8, 2010 3:11 PM EST up reply actions

exactly, milbury chose players that fit his talking points.

“this guy doughty will have a huge coming out party.”
“russia can bank on these two great defensemen, but do they have anyone else?”

for the same reason, mcguire called milbury out for omitting backstrom because it allowed PG to elaborate on one of his talking points (“sweden won gold in ‘06 and now they’ve added one of the top centers in the game”). no real slight in my eyes.

We were sitting behind the Ducks’ goal for two periods when they came to town. It was interesting watching him work.

Think that may have been his very last game as a Duck, too.

Is Backstrom Top 10 in the NHL? Top 5?

Let’s just slot AO and Sid in as the top 2 players in hockey. How do you round out the Top 5, and more particularly, does it include Backstrom? I don’t see enough of the West to be completely sure, but I have started thinking you canmake a compelling case for it.

I think he’s a slam dunk for Top 10.

Well, among forwards yes. Among skaters maybe. With goalies too I have to say no.

Ovechkin = Green Backs

some guy in Washington with funny teeth, one or two dudes from Vancouver, two dudes from San Jose, two dudes from Pittsburgh, one or two from New Jersey, one from Buffalo, a Dman in Chicago, one or two skaters from Detroit….it’s pretty easy to get to ten before finding guys that are clearly worse than Backy. I think he’s top ten, but maybe not a slam dunk.

by bilspacecadet on Feb 8, 2010 4:39 PM EST up reply actions

Just for fun

I got Ovechkin, Crosby, Malkin, Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Kovalchuk ahead of him, Thornton and Marleau and Iginla tied.

The big thing going for Backstrom is his age. That’s why I’m taking him over the Marleau’s, Thornton’s, Heatley’s, Datsyuk’s, Lidstrom’s, Kovalchuk’s, Sedin’s etc…he’s only 22!

From a pure talent standpoint he is right up there with any of those guys mentioned, is he better? Well it’s hard to tell, because all of those guys are extremely skilled in their own way.

Try to name players under 25-26 better than Backstrom and definitively I come up with Ovie and Crosby. Malkin may have him by a hair right now. But that said, Backstrom is better than Geno this year, and he is just getting better. He may be catching Crosby too. I’m also taking Mean Lars over Toewes and Kane, but I don’t get to see them play very much.

And again, he’s only 22!! He needs to be signed long term, like yesterday.

Evgeny Kuznetsov hams it up as he joins the Russia men's national team for the "Sweden Games" leg of the Euro Hockey Tour in Helsinki, Finland.

There's a bit of controversy as their game against the Finns is scheduled to be played in Helsinki's outdoor Olympic Stadium. Where the daytime temps are currently approximately minus-15 degrees Celsius, with periodic heavy snow.

This interview with head coach Zinetula Bilyaletdinov is fascinating, as he frets about the weather and especially when the reporters press him on the leaked reports that Kuznetsov will be centering the top line for Team Russia, just weeks after his 20th birthday.
