Watching the Caps in Texas

After growing up in D.C., I'm now just about the only Capitals fan living in Dallas, where to say hockey isn't understood or appreciated would be a gross understatement. The cable went out all over my neighborhood today (with the Super Bowl this evening, I didn't even bother calling), so a hockey-friendly buddy of mine (who has the wisdom and good taste to despise Cindy Crosby and the Penguins) and I started calling local sports bars.

We finally found one that promised to have the game on (try selling a hockey crowd of two to a bar on Super Bowl Sunday), and we were treated to perhaps the best game I've ever seen. EVER. (Yes, I was wearing my Ovechkin jersey, which really confused our cute-but-dingy waitress.) Great game, great rivalry, great fans (how did they get through the snow?), and of course, a great oucome.

Anyway, I'm new to the board — glad to finally track down some fellow Caps fans.

If you ever can’t find a way to watch a game, I stream a lot of them online at atdhe.net.
And welcome to the Rink!

Did you make it to the Westboro Baptist Church’s protest of the Dallas Stars/Phoenix Coyotes game last week?

Revenge is a dish best served cold.

Oh, THOSE guys. I had the “good fortune” of seeing them when they were in DC a few months ago.

They came here to GMU a few months ago because we elected a drag queen to homecoming queen, so we’re “gay enablers” and thus are going to hell.

Building off jakeshapiro

The Game Day Open Threads are usually a great place to find online links and streams of the game, if you can’t find some on your own, or don’t feel like doing the work.
As an out of town fan as well, I am dependent on online streams.
Gamecenter Live is quite the deal though, if you wanted dependability and legitimacy :).
Welcome Aboard!

I drive up to Dallas from Austin whenever the Caps play there. I think you’ll be shocked at the number of Caps sweaters in the stands. I was the last time I went.

Replanted In DC

I moved back to NVA in 2002 after spending 17 years in DFW as a lonely Redskins/Caps fan, lived west of McKinney (off Custer & 380, if you are familiar). We didn’t have cable out there, so I bought a C-Band dish to watch the Caps. For a long time, they broadcast in the clear so we didn’t have to pay subscription fees for the regional sports networks. For local DC sports news, I’d go to the library in Plano during lunch to read the Washington Post, usually 3-4 days late, but better than reading nothing but Cowboys. Thank goodness for the intenet.

Give em Credit
where to say hockey isn’t understood or appreciated would be a gross understatement

I don’t think you have to turn over too many rocks to find Stars fans out there. I was there in the late ‘90s when Dallas made their SC run. The atmosphere there was remarkably similar to DC now in terms of interest and enthusiasm (I was lucky enough to have a friend that was a STH, and got to go to game 5 of the Stars-Buffalo SC series). Keep in mind that there was no hockey infrastructure of consequence when the North Stars moved to Dallas in ’92. Not a single HS was playing hockey, and there were virtually no rinks. Within a few years, they built the Stars Centers all over the region. I think most of the major HS’s now have hockey programs, etc.

BTW, my favorite fan’s sign from the Stars-Sabres series “Hasek Zhitnik Shmelik”. I don’t think that one made it on TV.

Galloway

Sorry, one other thing comes to mind. I assume that Randy Galloway is still publishing and doing sports talk - Man I wish he was here doing DC talk, he puts Czab & co. to shame. He became an early fan of the Stars and a self-proclaimed hockey expert - “I learned my hockey growing up on the frozen Trinity” The first time I heard that, with his thick Texas drawl, I almost wrecked the car.

I’m a Stars fan who calls the Caps my second-favorite team. I don’t live in Dallas, but I used to live in Texas.

Just root for the caps 81 games of the year plus playoffs, and we’ll forgive you ;)

They laughed at Columbus, they laughed at Fulton, they laughed at the Wright brothers. But they also laughed at Bozo the Clown.

The only time I won’t root for the Caps is on March 8th when they play the Stars. And I’ll always root for the Caps in the playoffs.

Welcome. One request: Could you correct Crosby’s name, please? That nickname is offensive and inappropriate, and the moderators here (as well as many readers) really hate it. There’s an option for editing your own post, just above where the comments start.

The Stars are Moving from Dallas

perhaps.
if you believe the half sentence in ESPN.com’s NHL/rumors area.
So get ‘em while they’re…lukewarm.

Hockey’s as healthy as usual in the south it would seem…

Evgeny Kuznetsov hams it up as he joins the Russia men's national team for the "Sweden Games" leg of the Euro Hockey Tour in Helsinki, Finland.

There's a bit of controversy as their game against the Finns is scheduled to be played in Helsinki's outdoor Olympic Stadium. Where the daytime temps are currently approximately minus-15 degrees Celsius, with periodic heavy snow.

This interview with head coach Zinetula Bilyaletdinov is fascinating, as he frets about the weather and especially when the reporters press him on the leaked reports that Kuznetsov will be centering the top line for Team Russia, just weeks after his 20th birthday.
