Sid vs. Ovi Round Two - Tale of the Tape

NHL.com is getting ready for Round Two in the 2010 Sid vs. Ovi Derby.  They've prepared the headlines, the highlights, and now the nifty splash page graphics.

Star-divide

For Round One they produced this nice graphic element, the Tale of The Tape:

Taleofthetape_medium

You may recall that I was a bit underwhelmed because they didn't bother to couldn't find a picture of AO with the C on his sweater, but overall it was very nice to have all the numbers in one place.

Now we find ourselves getting ready for Round Two and an epic NHL Game of the Week Sid/Alex Throwdown.  NHL.com was a little bit more successful in looking through its own photo archives this time, and got both Captains in their full dress unis:

Taleofthetapetake2-2010-02-05_medium

And I'm kinda digging the weagle/waddlebird staredown at center ice.

So.  Let's look at the numbers, shall we?

Round One was played on January 21.  Including the results from that game, Caps have gone 8-0 and the Pens 4-2 (losses to the streaking Caps and streaking Sens).

Two notes:

1.  Caps have played two more games than the Pens in this stretch, and

2.  This graphic does include AO's stats for last night's game.

Plus-10, nearly double the points and undefeated in eight straight games. Now there's the real Tale of the Tape!

Sid isn’t really scoring like Ovie, nobody scores like Ovie does!

Tom Brady is Sidney Crosby, except Tom Brady has felt the touch of a woman, and has his own house.

sid is scoring like knuble. besides, ovi has more a’s and g’s so ovi scoring like ovi, ovi assisting like…ovi?

by hockeyman33 on Feb 5, 2010 5:00 PM EST up reply actions

i agree, sidney is more of the john stockton where ovi is the mike jordan type of player

But.. I liked John Stockton. Thought he was the most underrated player of his generation.

As much as I hate encouraging NBA comparisons to this great game of ours:

The Crosby=Stockton argument is way out of order. The latter never won an MVP and never led his team to a championship, despite the fact that they had two HOF guys playing together for years.

Great break down by the way.

Good breakdown indeed!

Weagle and Waddlebird should fight to the death!!

Role Reversal

Amazing how that article rips off the Farber story from the other day. It was outdated before it was posted this morning.

Only thing that graphic is missing is a games played: 49 for Ovie, 56 for Crosby. The relative equality of the numbers is otherwise deceiving.

                                            8                               87
Goals Per Game:       0.776                        0.661
Assists Per Game:     0.857                        0.607
Points Per Game:       1.633                        1.268

And something to indicate the reason behind the discrepancy…

                                           8                                87
QUALCOMP:                 0.049                        0.056
QUALTEAM:                 0.483                        -0.038

That QualTeam number is staggering…

how is that configured? is it like percentage of points compared to the average?

by hockeyman33 on Feb 5, 2010 5:03 PM EST up reply actions

Based on +/- I think, at least in part. That skews Ovie’s numbers, because you can probably find 8-10 Caps in the top 30 in the NHL in +/-.

Rec'd

For a thorough analysis of how Ovechkin has been playing since the Caps last met beat the Pens.

And for the use of a Δ symbol in the table. Nicely done.

Let's go Caps!

Haven’t been this sick of player vs player hype in a team sport since Magic vs Larry. Enough.

It’s pretty inevitable though.

CP2D I don’t disagree with you. It is silly and overdone at this point, but since I had the old ‘Tale of the Tape’ hanging around in my photobucket, and then I screencapped the new one, I started looking at the numbers and … voila …. FanPost.

IMO they are two great athletes and I think it’s great I’ll get to see both of them play for years to come.

And frankly Sid doesn’t have the world-class talent on his wings that he really should have.

YNC, it was nothing personal against you. You are one of my favorite people. You bring the funny and the stats. My issue is the whole player vs player thing. It’s completely ridiculous in team sports. In addition, both teams have shown they can win without either guy.

Great post, but as far as I see it, as long as we win, I don’t care if Ovie has zero points and Sid has 5 or more.

The two standings points are what count the most.

I strongly dislike Crosby.

So it’s satisfying.

It would actually be kind of neat if the caps had the weagle looking one way in the regular season, and in the other direction during the playoffs (kind of like the eagle carpet in the oval office that looks in a different direction during peace and wartime).

Evgeny Kuznetsov hams it up as he joins the Russia men's national team for the "Sweden Games" leg of the Euro Hockey Tour in Helsinki, Finland.

There's a bit of controversy as their game against the Finns is scheduled to be played in Helsinki's outdoor Olympic Stadium. Where the daytime temps are currently approximately minus-15 degrees Celsius, with periodic heavy snow.

This interview with head coach Zinetula Bilyaletdinov is fascinating, as he frets about the weather and especially when the reporters press him on the leaked reports that Kuznetsov will be centering the top line for Team Russia, just weeks after his 20th birthday.
