So can he be re-assigned tomorrow if he can’t make it out of the city?
Damn! Looks like my women is on time.
I don’t see why not…
Haven’t their been assignments in the past that were nothing but “paper assignments”?
True that, but to be fair, I was half-snarking.

Looks like no Holtby tonight. Just glad it looks like Theo will be getting rest tonight. Not a fan of Theo in back to backs.

Me too, but I think it more important to have him fresh for Pittsburgh on Sunday, if it happens.
No Alex, no ratings. Know Alex, know ratings.
Right. Starting him again tonight would’ve been fine with me… if there wasn’t a day game so soon thereafter that you need him for.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Totally agreed. And if we win tonight, winning Sunday takes on quadruple importance. The level of whining that will happen among the fan base if Pittsburgh is the team to break the streak will be unbearable.

I;m still not convinced that the game goes off Sunday. Guess we’ll see. If it does, I;ll be there,.

Oh, totally… but I’d rather not take the chance on Mother Nature cooperating and keeping the Penguins grounded like the flightless fowl they are.

If Pittsburgh were to win on Sunday, it will take a Herculean effort. Think about it: they’re playing an afternoon game in Montreal that probably won’t end until around 5:00, then they have to get on a plane and somehow make their way through a blizzard to get into DC probably around midnight and then get up and play a noon game on Sunday. If I were a Pens fan, I’d be screaming holy hell about how my team was getting screwed by the league. And they’d be absolutely right.

Disagree. I mean, your points are all valid, but if the Caps play with the kind of discipline and defensive effort they put forth last night, an average Pens team can beat them rather easily, IMO.

Of course, caps fans would respond with “you messed up the playoff schedule for a Yanni concert” which would also be absolutely right.
The snow is supposed to end Saturday night… by the time they’re getting in from Montreal, they should have no problems.

If the airports are indeed closing down today, what matters more is when they re-open after the storm.

Why? They’ll just play at Reagan itself.

yeah. Is Dulles really equipped to remove 20+ inches of snow in a very short time? I dunno.

I think the airports work to keep runways clear as much as humanly possible. Closing the airports will be because of visibility and landing/takeoff conditions, so if the snow stops before nightfall, I could see the airports reopening Saturday evening.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
Yes. They have tons of plows/removal equipment and will be able to be open fairly quickly as long as visibility is ok. Getting from the airports to VC might be a bit dicier, but from both BWI and Dulles its mainly major roadways. I still think the game goes off on time.
The Thrash getting out tonight is a whole other issue.
"You ever use smelling salts, every time you type a bad blog?" Brooks Laich
uh, yeah… the Thrashers vs. Panthers game Saturday at 7:00 looks unlikely if the Thrash are already in DC now…
by iwearstripes on Feb 5, 2010 11:11 AM EST up reply actions
Any idea where they generally fly into? I’m pretty sure they can’t be flying in or out of National unless they’ve chartered a plane through a major airline (since DCA doesn’t handle private aircraft) which leaves BWI and Dulles… either of which would be a greater logistical challenge.
by iwearstripes on Feb 5, 2010 10:42 AM EST up reply actions
Let’s have ‘em fly into Andrews. That would be teh awesome. Except for them being the Penguins an’ all…
IS KEPTIN NOW
Didn’t they deny the Browns that opportunity back in December?
I mean… Andrews runway has to be clear right? Just in case we need a couple fighter jets over DC in a hurry…
by iwearstripes on Feb 5, 2010 10:47 AM EST up reply actions
Could they charter a helicopter? I’d imagine it’s easier to land it (unless it gets too windy) than an airplane.

The ironic thing would be that while it would be a back-to-back on Sunday they have been idle since Monday. We, on the other hand would be playing in our 5th game in 6 days, having just experienced a back-to-back on Friday. I would think the schedule makers originally were doing the Pens a favor.
by Gin and Tonic on Feb 5, 2010 12:07 PM EST up reply actions
I’d be screaming holy hell about how my team was getting screwed by the league. And they’d be absolutely right.
The Penguins have gotten more than their fair share of playing teams on the second day or back-to-backers. The league schedule being so compacted, a lot of funky things are going on. I’m not complaining that much and don’t think other Pens fans should either. Surely the team will not be making excuses.
They’re millionares with first class accommodations, they’ll figure it out. I just hope it’s safe transportation, as long as that’s the case, I don’t think there’s an excuse that will come out of the locker-room.

Not reallly. You guys go ahead and win every game until the beginning of May, just drop 4 of 7 in the second round again.

I’m not completely sure, but I think the whining was referring to those among our own fanbase ;)

On a semi-related note, looking at the highlights of the NYR game, after Bradley’s breakaway was stopped, Ovechkin got shoved down by Redden and looked a little complain-y. Is that normal? I thought it was a pretty soft deal to complain to the refs about.

If Wade Redden took some action that resulted in AO going to the ice, he must have cheated to do it.

There’s no guarantee that the Caps and Pens will meet in Round 2.
Possibly Scenario.
Caps finish first in Conference
NJ wins Atlantic
Buffalo wins North East
Pitt finishes 4th
Suppose the Caps, Devils, and Pens all advance and Buffalo gets upset in Round 1. Then the Round 2 match ups will be Caps vs Team that Upset Buffalo and Pitt gets NJ.
Rocking the Red since 1975
The best case for avoiding the Pens in the second round would involve the Pens finishing with either the 2 or the 3 seed. Then the Caps could not, as a mathematical proposition, meet them until the ECF.
So root for the Pens to overtake the Devils, if you want to avoid them in the playoffs for as long as possible. It’s what I’m doing.

This should be interesting; I hope he’s already on his way down here, though, because the incoming storm is going to be scary-bad.
I do hope this means Neuvirth either starts tonight or Sunday (preferably tonight)!

You don’t think he was already here last night?
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
According to Capitals Insider, Neuvirth was the first guy on the ice. Which means he’s here. I was not expecting him to be recalled today given that he has to play a certain number of games in Hershey to be sent there. (I’m not sure what the number is.)
So, will Neuvirth, who appears to be recovered from his injury, start tonight? Or will they give Holtby the start tonight?
Rocking the Red since 1975
Neuvy, or I’ll eat my entire hat collection (which, if you’ll forgive the immodesty, is saying something).

Not surprising. Like I said yesterday, there was no way they were going to put the pressure of a 12 game win streak on the back of a 20-year old. However, had they lost last night, I bet the recall wouldn’t have happened and Holtby would have been playing tonight at Verizon.

…
but they will put it on the back of a 21-year-old who has played at the NHL level.

I think the only reason Alzner doesn’t play is that it’s really hard to tinker with a lineup that’s streaking if you don’t have to. I bet Sloan doesn’t get a sweater tonight, though.

(And the return of Green… duh. But I’d have sat him for Karl anyway after 89’s performance in NY)
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
It’d be Karl’s turn anyway. it does look like they need a shake after the last couple of games, and a Karl / Tyler swap might do a little of that.

Sloan was wretched last night. Ersky should dress him over Sloaner every night. Sloan’s value is fading and fading fast. Get a bigger red arrow icon ready.

Not sure – a great game might have meant Pothier sat. But I guess we’ll never know.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Right, that’s what I was getting at – he’s an option for a benchin’.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Even though he’s been a healthy scratch, isn’t he getting his NHL pay while he’s eating nachos and coke in the press box? When he was recalled before Boston, Bruce said it was because they were on a road trip and didn’t want to get caught being short a D-man. Now, not so much.
I have to think alzner was and sitting because he was a piece in a possible trade. Nothing else really makes sense to me. I mean why take the cap hit?
by 718CapsFan on Feb 5, 2010 12:42 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
If he was a possible trade, they would more likely play him than sit him, I’d think…
As for why take the cap hit, they wanted one more D able to skate/play when they went out of town, on a “just in case” basis… I wouldn’t want to be stuck in NYC with one of my D falling on his keester and unable to suit up… and no backup at all.
I need a snappy signature...
Maybe the “just in case” is true, but why not as soon as Green went to the press box. Alzner was only called up for games 2 and 3 of the suspension. Maybe someone had a slight ding we never heard about?
Maybe, but there’s always the chance they were telling the truth, that he was nothing more than an insurance policy. I realize that “truth” and “Caps management” are pretty much an oxymoron, but every once in a while…….

How about “to have 7 Ds for a road trip in case someone is a late scratch”? Of course, now that Green is eligible again, we’ll see how it plays out.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Neuvy was “hurt.”
I have absolutely no reason to suspect that it wasn’t a legit injury, but if anyone had a right to say, “Hey, I don’t belong here right now and I don’t want to be here right now,” it was him.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Remember when he was going to win the Calder?
My ability to post is only surpassed by my ability to pinch pennies.
I remember when we wanted him to be mentioned in the race alongside Tyler Myers.
I look to the future because that's where I'm going to spend the rest of my life.
He was mentioned in the race BEFORE Tyler Myers was. But that was back when Tavares was the Stone Cold Lock.
IS KEPTIN NOW
Part of me thinks if they were to trade someone, they’d trade Neuvy at the very deadline if Varly gets healthy… a rookie goalie that’s build up some good stats is probably going to fetch a better trade than someone who hasn’t played a single NHL game
Nver mind, I could actually go look if I had my head screwed in.
8-4-0 in 14 games started, .911, 2.74
No Alex, no ratings. Know Alex, know ratings.
With a March 3 trade deadline and a two week Olympic break, there’s not enough time to evaluate Varly. We know he’s not available for the Caps this weekend — and even if he’s ready to go next week, that leaves only three games left before the Olympic break.
In any event, I think the Caps want to have a better look at Holtby before they make any decisions.
Neuvirth and a 1st to NJD for Kovalchuk?
Just kidding. I really don’t want any of those three goalies to walk away for nothing, though.
