- Per the HHoF, on this date back in 1996, "Peter Bondra scored four goals, (including 3 in the third period), and added two assists, and Michal Pivonka scored twice including the winning goal at 1:21 of overtime and had three assists, as the Capitals won 6-5 over the visiting NY Islanders."

I tweeted this question, but thought I’d ask it here as well – buy or sell tomorrow night at MSG against the new-look Rangers as the toughest test so far during the streak?
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Losing 6 of their last 7, coming back from a road game at LA last night? Sell, but not an easy one.
Damn! Looks like my women is on time.
Incomplete answer – must provide at least one tougher game (Pitt being the easy answer, I’d think).
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Gotcha. Well like GS, I’d go with Detroit, with Anaheim being a dark horse second.
Damn! Looks like my women is on time.
Im worried that Atlanta, the 2nd back to back at home, with two of the past 3 games against being 1 goal games, will be our toughest test before the break.
Sure, but I had thought the question only referred to games that have already been played. If you include games that have yet to be played, Friday could be a letdown, and MSG hasn’t been kind to us in years past. Friday is that special jersey patch, thing, so there’s a little bit of additional motivation there, I’d think.
No Alex, no ratings. Know Alex, know ratings.
Plus it’s possible that Holtby could get a start. Theo had a 41-save game last night, tomorrow MSG. It would be logical to let Braden take the second game of the back-to-back so Theo can be fresh for the Pens.
Also, Neuvy is banged up. (Unless they’re gonna recall him for the Friday game, and just didn’t want him playing in Norfolk/worried about travel issues with the snow we’re about to get.)
IS KEPTIN NOW
Sorry, I can’t see Twitter at work – what does it say?
I’d kind of like to see Holtby get a start, and Holtby’s first NHL start would be a shot of motivation for the team as well.
No Alex, no ratings. Know Alex, know ratings.
Unless he loses.. then he’ll forever have the stigma of being THAT GOALIE that blew the winning stream during his first NHL game.
Not that we caps fans would care THAT much because ya gotta lose some times, but I don’t know how that would play with his confidence level.
If someone had to hold the burden of ending the streak, I’d rather Jose have to carry that load. He can take it and we wouldn’t think any less of him.
You know what? For my lights, we’ve got the franchise record now. Okay, so it’s a cool winning streak. I’m not even worried about it now that we have the franchise record. I’d rather take that risk and see what Holtby can do.
No Alex, no ratings. Know Alex, know ratings.
For my lights, we’ve got the franchise record now.
Yeah, but they don’t have the NHL record of 17. Do you want them to pull an Indy Colts and send in the subs when history is in view?

He’s in such a groove, I doubt he wants to ever come out. And because of Bruce’s goalie rotations, Theo’s only played in 31 games this season so he shouyd hardly be worn out. Also, don’t forget, he’s got a two week break coming up. I say play him until Varly is ready to come back. I’d be shocked to see Holtby get a start if the streak is intact.
You know, that’s the silver lining of all the goalie trials and tribulations this year. Assuming everyone stays healthy and in the groove now, they’re all going to be relatively fresh going into the playoffs.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
Theo just sat a game with a hip flexor issue. Not sure if you want a guy with a possible nagging injury to play 5 games in a row

Theo and Holtby in NY with the Caps
Varly and Irbe training in HER
Neuvy still in HER with lower-body issues
That leaves Cash and who, exactly? to backstop the Bears tonight. Is there any word on another Stingray callup or is Stretch on a plane to Norfolk?
IS KEPTIN NOW
From the Stingrays site
Received in a trade for future considerations with Utah, Buskirk, 21, comes to the Stingrays with a 5-8-1-0 record, a 3.39 goals-against average and a .881 save percentage. The Windsor, ONT native started the season 4-1.

Agreed, but honestly, like I said above, I wouldn’t be wrecked if it happened. Start Holtby and let Theodore rest for the Pens. Let him have the backing of the home crowd to start him and give the skaters a shot of motivation. If it happens, it happens.

Not for nothing, but the unbeaten streak record is 14, which the team could tie on Sunday assuming they got that far with it.

“On paper,” the Pittsburgh and Detroit games posed bigger challenges (Pittsburgh has tons more skill that NYR, and Detroit still knows how to cobble together wins).
“In game,” I thought the Phoenix and Anaheim games were tougher than this one should be, because those teams played a station-to-station game and didn’t let the Caps get off and running.
The Rangers play a game for which they lack enough skill. They do try to play with tempo. But if no one other than Marian Gaborik is scoring, and if Henrik Lundqvist isn’t strong in his second game back after a bout with the flu, the Rangers should not be competitive. If the Caps get off early, it could get really ugly, really quick for the Rangers in their first game back home with their “new look.”
If you've read this far...seek help.
Sell. As noted, the Rangers will be playing their first game back east after a three game west coast trip. That’s never easy on the home team.
Toughest test so far? Last night in Boston to break the record against a team desperate for a win in a building we haven’t had much luck in.
Tougher test will be Friday against Atlanta. The Thrashers are off until the game on Friday, will be waiting here in D.C. while the Caps are in N.Y., crowd on Friday could be sparse because of the impending doom, and Pittsburgh at home on Sunday on the horizon.
Detroit is somewhat living on their former reputation. Anaheim had played an OT game the night before. Pittsburgh was in a somewhat simliar situation, recovering from a west coast trip but they had hosted the Islanders before us. However, both teams were missing key players.

Please load brain before shooting off mouth.™
I agree with you on the Friday crowd risk. I’m going to be sweating out the forecast for the weekend. These are the last two home games before the Olympic break, and I really don’t want to miss them. I especially don’t look forward to the possibility of a slew of empty seats on national television on Sunday.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
Not worried about Sunday. The snow is slated for Friday and iont Saturday, and there’s plenty of time to prepare. If past history this winter is an indicator, the roads should be drivable by Sunday morning.

I’m counting on that. (please, please, please, oh please)
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
Friday’s likely to be light, but I’m planning to go no matter what. I want pics of those jerseys.
Besides, I think a lot of people will make an extra effort to get out for Pittsburgh.

Yea, it would have to be pouring snow to get me to not go.
Tom Brady is Sidney Crosby, except Tom Brady has felt the touch of a woman, and has his own house.
No 4WD in our driveway. All I need is to get to the Metro, but that’s 10 miles away. As long as they get my street cleared, I’m probably good to go. Of course, this would have to be the time the game is at noon. Means I’ve got to be able to get out of the driveway by around 10:30 at the latest.

At Glory Days, you get 10-12 wings free, depending on location and you have a week to claim. Their sauces include “Glory Sauce” which is honey and hot sauce, basically, a BBQ, mild, medium, hot, and some crappy old bay sauce.

Well, the forecasters aren’t going to say for sure any earlier than tomorrow but it is sounding like we could be in for another 20 inches or more of snow. For me it depends on when things start on Friday. I’ll already be in the city for work so it is a matter of getting into the area and finding a place to park which is no small feat now that the city has raised the meter rates and extended the enforcement times.
As for Sunday, yeah, the storm should be cleared out but the December storm cleared out by Sunday morning and OPM closed the Federal Government on Monday anywyay. The crowd could be kept down because people may not be dug out in time to make a faceoff at High Noon.
Luckily I live on a Snow Emergency Route so I should be able to get out to the game on Sunday.

Detroit was by far the toughest. There is no way the Caps should have come out of that game with two points; they were thoroughly outplayed. I would say that last night’s game would come a close second, but I was never all that worried because I knew that the B’s couldn’t score.
However, I think we’re all forgetting what was, probabilistically, the least likely game to win, and that’s the first game in the streak against Florida way back when.
There's a fine line between arrogance and ignorance and only I manage to erase that line.
My question is pretty much “heading into the game,” not in retrospect.

Actually, then I’d say Florida most definitely. It was the third game of a three-game trip and the second night of a back-to-back against a goalie whose righty catching glove gives us fits. Moreover, we had played like crap the night before in Tampa.
Otherwise, I’d say Pittsburgh, partly because of the team, and partly because it was a road game.

Kovalchuk to Kings?
Source: Ilya Kovalchuk Close To Being Traded To The Kings
Atlanta Thrashers left wing Ilya Kovalchuck, this year’s top catch on the NHL’s trade market, may be on his way to Hollywood. Sources are rumbling that a deal is nearly complete that would send Atlanta’s franchise player to the Kings. There are currently no details on what the Thrashers would receive in return for one of the NHL’s top snipers.
Well, at least he’d be playing across the country instead of in New Jersey, but if true the Kings figure to be right in the discussion out West.
By the way, this report came out last night so I apologize if it’s already been refuted in a previous post/thread.

Speaking of Laughlin. . .
Did anyone catch this beauty: towards the end of the game he basically assumes the Caps have it in the bag at 3-1 and JB warns him the game is not over and in only a way Laughlin can he says "Yeah sometimes I go early. . . "
JB had to restrain himself and I nearly coughed up my cheerios. I realize this is very low brow humor but stil, that was damn funny.
For the record, Pens is the tougher test especially after the shlacking the Caps already put on them once. They are pissed, everyday up the Pittsburgh media reports on what the Pens did and then also what the Caps did, it is pretty much an obsession and I am loving every minute of it.
The question is “so far,” so you’re getting ahead of yourself a bit (though the Pens game during the streak certainly was arguably tougher heading into it than this Rangers game).
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
The obsession is going both ways. Watch Comcast Sportsnite; they won’t be announcing all the NHL scores every night, but they’re sure giving us Pens highlights.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
I think they’re giving us highlights from the Eastern Conference mostly; watch any of the Western feeds and they give mostly highlights from the West. Sure they’re hying the Pens – bet that everyone is. Just be thankful the Super Bowl is the same day or we’d all be drowning in it.

Corey Sighting?
I don’t recall this being discussed before, but I may have missed something. I got the good old paper version of the Washington Examiner at the bus stop this morning & it had a bonus section called the Caps Extra. It looks like it was entirely done by Corey and has some interesting notes/features (including an interview with Ovechkin & a bit on Flash as a Center that I don’t recall seeing anywhere before). I apologize if this is old news or already been covered – just thought it might be of interest if not already mentioned.
In one of the sections where he reviewed a “memorable game from the past” or something like that he made it sound like the Caps Extra was going to be reoccurring. It was a cool little bit wrapped on the front page, I hope it catches on. The Ex is a plucky little upstart and besides the Sunday post the only dead tree media I read.
TSN Stats...
Leading Scorers: Three are from the Canucks and they play on the same line. #1 and #3 are on the Caps and play on different lines!
Five of the top +/- guys including much love for Jeff Schultz. Woot!
The 5-on-5 goal differential is telling though… 7 of the top 10 are from Washington, meaning there’s scoring going on everywhere as I don’t think the Caps are playing with 7 skaters out there each night (although some teams might swear they are). Also included are the Sedin twins and Zach Parise…yeah guess they’re ok too. ;-)
And with regards to the 1996 memory, what the thing doesn’t say was that the Caps were down 5-2 heading into the third before they rallied to come back, and that after Pivo scored the winner, Mike Milbury (then Islanders coach) instead of leaving the ice with his team, walked up to the ref and got in his face… It’s always fun to watch Milbury get schooled… it seems to happen a lot.
Let's go Caps!
from the TSN stats, I was pleasantly surprised to see Sami Lepisto finish in the top ten for January plus-minus! Good for him.

Not sure if this adds to the “bias” discussion – but the NHL Network is pretty biased towards the Caps. If the Caps played that night, they almost always get the opening spot. I know that’s partly because they score a lot of goals, but seriously I don’t remember the last time they played that NHLN didn’t lead with their game. Although maybe that’s less of a bias and more of a marketing decision.

This is an incredibly awesome shot. I want to be able to shoot photos like this one when I grow up.
I need a snappy signature...
All you need is a Canon EOS 5D Mark II or better, perhaps some Canon L glass—the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM, and a spot where the holes in the glass are. :)
You will be all grown up then! And about $5,000 poorer.
I would love to get myself a Canon EOS 5D Mark II, but I’m pretty committed to Sony at this point. (They bought out Minolta several years ago, and I have Minolta lenses). I’m eyeing the Sony Alpha 850, which is a 25 megapixel DSLR that runs about $2k for the body… it also has onboard image stabilization, and it does cleanup for high-ISO shots, both of which are things I want. The lens would be the G-series 70-400mm f/4.5-5.6 lens - I’ve had problems with f2.8 being too low in the focal length department – if I focus on the guy’s chest, I lose his face. I might also go with the G-series 70-300mm f/4-5.6 lens, because it’s black and doesn’t look like a professional lens. :)
I need a snappy signature...

Good observation on the f2.8 focal length…I’ll keep that in mind in the future. My buddy has the Canon L 70-200mm f/4 and that lens is amazing enough.
Yep, seems whatever lenses you start w/ dictates what bodies you buy for the rest of your life. :)
I chose Canon b/c the entry level DSLRs (XSi is what I have) have the best continuous shooting frame rate w/o buffering for the price and I enjoy shooting a lot of outdoor water sports.
That’s a good point on the continuous shooting rate. I get 3 FPS with my Sony Alpha 100, and the 850 is not any faster, but I can still get pretty good stuff.
I need a snappy signature...
Yeah, the XSi is 3.5 fps for 53 jpegs. The Canon 7D is 8 fps unlimited! I drool over that camera, and, for it’s feature set it’s not ridiculously priced. Someday.
The 850 looks like a nice camera, just checked it out. I like the onboard image stabilization.
I do too; it comes in seriously handy when you’re trying to hand-hold a camera for a long exposure.
The one drawback to the Sonys that I have found is that they do not tolerate cold well. If you fire the flash and the camera has gotten cold, an Alpha 100’s flash will fry. :-/ So the easy solution is to keep the thing at a reasonable temperature, instead of leaving it in the car in Chicago in February!
I need a snappy signature...
Sounds like you speak from experience on the flash fry thing. :(
Yes, w/ Canon (and Nikon), it stinks you have to pay a few hundred extra bucks for every lens if you want image stabilization. Much better to have it on camera, though I’m sure I remember Canon saying it’s better for it to be on the lens (as they rake in $millions$).
Yeah, unfortunately, I do… I fried one a couple of years back doing exactly what I said not to do.
You also don’t want to take them out in the rain – at least not the previous model (the Minolta Maxxum 7D) – but that was sheer stupidity on my part.
Canon does think it’s better to have image stabilization on the lens, and it might well be, but it does cost a few hundred bucks more per lens, and if I’m dropping that kind of money, the thing better be gold-plated.
I need a snappy signature...

The playoff spot is 28 so we could concievably clinch the playoffs and division at the same time.
With our win combined with losses by New Jersey and Atlanta last night, we shaved three points off of all three numbers (playoffs, division, and conference).
Detroit’s win in regulation not only shaved four points off the President’s Trophy number, 51, but put us in the drivers seat for that one right now with very little room for error.

The Rangers only won because they got rid of Kotalik’s contract. Jokinen isn’t very good and he is overpaid, but at least his contract comes off the books after this season. But that probably just frees up money for Sather to offer another dumb contract.
On a side note, watching the Rangers game last night the announcers mentioned that Jokinen was appealing for a penalty call in the third. On the replay they showed a pretty hilarious and terrible dive by Jokinen.

I don’t think he’d be available, but I think I could live with him. I should probably look into it a little more before taking a firm position. I seem to remember another American D that started in EDM with great offensive potential…

His 5v5 offensive stats aren’t great compared to, say, Visnovsky, but he plays the highest QComp with some of the lowest QTeam.
He also looks like their best PKer, along with Jason Strudwick.
He’s 27 with a 4 million dollar cap hit that runs until 2014. Pass, unless GMGM is rock-solid certain that he puts us over the top this year. Which is impossible.

Yeah the certainty is impossible to know, and 4 mill is a bit tough with the guys we have to resign. But if he’s a great PK guy and I know he has size and can skate… just makes it tougher to dismiss off hand.

I don’t know if he’s great, he’s just got the best GAON/60 on the team. Its not by a huge margin, it’s just better than everyone else on the Oilers. I’m still a bigger fan of a Ladislav Smid deal, personally.

Thanks for pulling those numbers. I remember him as being overpaid, but I wasn’t sure just how overpaid.
He’s a great puck-mover as well as being good defensively. Offensive numbers aren’t there this year because the whole team’s in the shitter, but he’s done it in the past.

And by Strudwick I mean Grebeshkov.
Also, the worst D GAON/60 on the PK, by far? Steve Staios. 11.61 versus 8.44 for Gilbert. The next highest is actually Strudwick (oops) at 9.57. I am categorically opposed to acquiring Steven Staios.

Brendan Witt is no longer an NHL caliber player. He has not place on the Caps.
The streak – and the attendant luck that is a part of all streaks – is camouflaging some weaknesses. Namely, the PK and defensive zone coverage. The team could still use a good D.

I agree with all of this. We are getting lucky with posts, huge goaltending performances, good bounces, etc. Especially the last 3 games we haven’t looked very good. We’ll come back to earth soon.
But I’m also with Jordan that there’s no point picking up a guy if he’s not a clear upgrade, which Witt is not. No need to swap depth players at this point as our chemistry is obviously pretty strong.

Yeah, once the Merciless God of Posts and Crossbars removes his favor from the Caps, they’ll have more difficulty.
It could be balanced out, however, if AO or Semin gets red hot. And they’re due, imo.

kidding, right?
Bad enough that the “crease-clearing D ‘we’ need” is post-lockout slang for “let’s get our PK out there and really raise some heck!” Witt was never fast or smart, and he said he didnt want to be here. I’d rather give Alzner’s sister the minutes than see Brendan “Half” Witt back in a Caps uniform.

This is great and all...
I was really hoping for last night’s win. I really wanted the team to break the franchise record. I’m really happy they pulled it out and was planning on putting together an honorary photoshop(possibly prompted by JP) this morning in celebration.
But I realized…this isn’t what I want. I don’t really care about the streak or the record. No one really cared about the previous streak record and soon enough everyone will forget this one, too.
I’m sorry, and I want to make clear I have no intention of bringing down the party, but last night’s win doesn’t mean much in the end. After a night’s sleep it feels empty.
I only care about one achievement. I only want one thing for our team.

CSN-
Just for any of my fellow puckheads in MD and VA with FiOS, according to the Bog, FiOS is now offering “CSN+” in all of the MD and VA counties with FiOS. For example, I know it was missing in Howard County, though I think MoCo had it. So even though the game Friday against ATL was the last one scheduled for the minus, and it’s now been changed to HD, this is still good news.
Hey Wizards and Caps fans, we’ve heard your cries and we’re answering. Starting [Tuesday], FiOS TV customers in Maryland and Virginia will have Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic Plus (CSN+), the CSN MA overflow channel that gets you your Caps and Wizards games.
As many of you know, we’ve been offering these games on FiOS1, a local channel that’s available in the D.C. metro area, but does not include parts of Maryland and Virginia. We’ve worked closely with Comcast on this, and found a solution that gives FiOS TV customers all of the Caps and Wizards games they want. We’ll continue to offer the CSN+ content on FiOS1 in the D.C. metro area, and on channel 334 in the rest of the region.

The one thing that definitely ISN’T true is that they are making it up as they go along. The end of the show was negotiated years ago, and many clues from even the first episodes of the show show (ha) that they knew where they were going. (I’m obviously not denying that the entire story of Lost wasn’t known when they sat down to write the first episode, or that adjustments have had to be made due to actors leaving, writer’s strikes, etc, but the general idea has been there the entire time).
The rest is your opinion, sure, but I’m tired of the “even-they-don’t-know-the-answers” meme.

Oh, I’m sure I’m missing out on plenty. I just don’t have time to watch a show like that if I haven’t been on board for so long. It would take months and months worth of my free time to catch up. I just watched the recap so I can watch it with my lady, who has seen them all.
I’m sure there’s a lot of however-many seasons that can’t be compressed into 60 minutes, with commercials. But I can at least follow along.
The one thing that’s definitely true/nice about this season is that the “flash sideways” device doesn’t really require any prior viewings of the show to appreciate, at least in part.

Mirtle has some great stuff up at the Globe today.
First, the Playoff Push. Since he projects that to make the EC playoffs, a team will only need 87 points this year. That means the Caps only need to go 3-23-1 over their remaining games to hit that mark.
Second, a look at just how much better that Caps offense is better than everyone else. Right now, the Caps are averaging more than 1 goal per game better than the league average. That’s just unreal.

On Draper having to wear a USA jersey at practice: "well at least the Wings can settle bets without involving gold plated desert eagles!"
That second link is interesting. Look at how many Cup winners are in that group. Of course, those teams were from a different era, but I think it’s interesting to note that teams that vastly outscore the rest of the league do a pretty good job of winning the Cup.

Is Semin a KHL flight risk? He sounds keenly aware that it’s more fun to play PHI than to play Vityaz; he’d lose a lot of press insulation (no 8-meter shadow to hide in, and they know he speaks the language); and Stanley is Stanley.
I think he is definitely a flight risk. I’m not sure he has the burning desire to win the Stanley Cup. He could go back home and be comfortable and make much more money and not have to fight through any difficult D. He’d have 5 curl and drag goals a game.

I think the Cup’s the only reason he left his cozy Siberian home in the first place. I think he wants Cherepanov’s health care and Vityaz’ D like you want an animatronic Lemaire to sit with at Caps games. I think cracking jokes with Holtby and speaking to Tarik through an interpreter cracks him up, and that he’s only a flight risk to a non-competitive team that’s short on Russians.
…like NSH.

by Fehr and Balanced on Feb 3, 2010 5:25 PM EST up reply actions
I’ve been harboring a baseless conspiracy theory that the Caps org is actively-passively (if you follow) trying to encourage Semin to go to the KHL because they know eventually he’ll tie up more money than the team can juggle with and somewhere down the line he won’t fit with this being the biggest hard factor (as opposed to other less quantitative factors) . They know with his highlight reel skills it’d be bad PR to send him to another team and talk about money.
They brought in the KHL used car sales guy for a few days right smack when Semin was out for a short set period of time. (Yes I know, when isn’t Semin out). After that’s when he was quoted as saying “I’m not going to lie..”blah blah, very interesting thing to consider…
Just a baseless theory, but I continue to feed it wherever I find a scrap. And topical.
I don’t think he is anymore. It’s possible to read too much into things, but I’m not sure a guy who wants to go play in the KHL takes a one-year extension to accelerate his NHL UFA rights. I think Semin wants to play in the NHL, whether for money or glory or whatever.
Losing a forward like Semin is going to hurt your offense 100 times out of 100, the question is how much is Suter going to upgrade your defense. If it’s more than losing Semin hurts your offense, you pull the trigger. Also, it depends on who’s more expensive going forward — if Semin costs half again as much as Suter, it’s a question of Suter + X being greater than Semin.
Only YOU can prevent idiots from commenting!

I wanted to post this earlier so Ice Warrior would be sure to see it so hopefully he does.
Mackan has been out of Farjestad’s last couple of games with “an injury” that none of the articles bothered to describe. So I emailed the editor of hockeyligan.se and he was happy to hear from American fans and said that Marcus is still dealing with the wrist injury that kept him out of the bronze medal game.
I remember we were skeptical that it wasn’t really an ‘injury’ that kept him out of the game, but apparently it was.
So there you have it. He’s more or less week-to-week with an upper body injury. But he’s young and should heal with the proper treatment.

just me, personally, but I tend to throw the links I find throughout the day (like a 5 or 6 Caps-related content posts that Steinz is doing lately) in the Clips, because its easier, and if I made a new fanshot for each link, it would shove fanposts off the front page in a day. Like I said, that’s just how I do it, my personal feeling. Trying to balance getting info out there without overloading the fanshots.

So, getting back to JP's question about the toughest game
I’d post it there, but I can’t find it with all the junk about bleu cheese, burgers and mountain dew. I’d be in favor of a Chatty Cathy thread, btw.
Anyhoo…back to the toughest game.
When a streak reaches the proportions of the current one, the next game is always the toughest, tougher than the prior ones in all senses. I don’t know for sure, but my gut says that the players start focusing on the result they want (“God, we’ve got to win to keep the streak alive”) instead of focusing on process (“Let’s have a good shift, skate hard, move the puck and go to the net”, for instance).
The focus on desired results leads to progressively more standing around, which inevitably leads to a loss.
That’s my theory, anyway.

I think you’re right about focusing on the big picture at the expense of the details. (Hopefully that doesn’t happen in the Spring.) It’s like they played last night afraid to lose. They needed to take it to BOS and just go win it. Luckily, Theo covered their asses.

There were guys open in the slot and driving to the crease all night. That’s going to have to stop.
My ability to post is only surpassed by my ability to pinch pennies.
Well, when the Caps either enter the zone under control and with speed, or dump the puck and forecheck hard, they play good defense. First period last night, they were doing neither, so they were scrambling to catch up all period, and that tendency reappeared sporadically throughout the game.
If the Caps skate hard, they force the other guys to play their game. It’s the games where they don’t skate hard that their slow D get exploited.

i agree with the premise of your theory. it’s hard to keep a streak like this going. similar to pete rose chasing 56 games or cal going for the consecutive games record. every game the media scrutiny gets bigger and there’s more hype, etc.
i’m not in the room, but i sense that this team isnt really squeezing their sticks or getting all worked up over it. i think they are enjoying the ride and really like winning. i think they appreciate the history of a club record, but like poti said, they have bigger things to accomplish.
now, if they keep it rolling and approach the 15 or 17 game mark, that may change. the key will be how fast they bounce back after the lose a game.
Just trying to capture the spirit of the thing...
At this point, they should just ride it. What else do they need to prove?

I take so much pleasure watching NJD not be any better than last year. They had a coach that had an up tempo, aggressive style, but let him go. Then they bring back in Lemaires and the original Trapper ‘Keeper and yet they aren’t any better. They can take their pick, but either Lemaires and the trap aren’t all that, or Brodeur isn’t.

I don’t watch enough to know if Brodeur is looking tired, but that sure wasn’t the excuse last year. Guys may be hitting the wall but you are also seeing what happens to a team with no offensive depth. The Devilz have 2 players that scare anyone offensively: Parise and Elias. Elias is out.

Pittsburgh’s size and skill down the middle, and their ability to forecheck HARD are two things the Caps don’t match up with particularly well. The Sabres are good, if Miller is healthy. No doubt about it.

Why do they want players that can help now, as opposed to next season and beyond? I don’t think they make the playoffs without Ilya and no team is going to want to give up 3-4 improvement-over-Atlanta roster players for one winger, even if it is Kovy.

Depends on the term of the deal. AO money is a no-go for Kovy, we could spend it better elsewhere. Like, say, Backstrom. Or Mike Green.

I don’t want that contract on the books when Green comes up for an extension in two years. If we sign him to a two-year deal after the trade, it’s all good. However, if given the choice between the two — which is what that amounts to money-wise — I’m taking Green over Kovy every day of the week.

But there’s no reason ENers SHOULD be taken out. An EN goal often clinches a game that was previously in doubt. It’s one of the most important goals in the game most times it’s scored.

Wayne Gretzky is the all-time leader in EN goals and nobody smirks when they look at his totals or wonder about his place in hockey lore. (huge paraphrasing liberties there)
There are lots of reasons to think shootouts won’t be here forever, but in either case, you can’t compare scoring against the ages without taking out shootout GWG’s
And actually, shootout winning goals also count as go ahead and game winning goals to Campbell, so Crosby is picking up more than 1 point on some of his SO goals.

It doesn’t mean he’s not supportive of it. I’ve thought about it, and I think maybe the best way to do it would be to let people be spontaneous, about anything, but if there’s so many that the posts are less than half of a regular post in width, maybe a polite suggestion to start an OT about it (Or move to a Chatty Cathy thread) wouldn’t curtail the spontaneous discussion too much, and would keep the conversations in Caps Clips relatively hockey related.

That’s my preference. I don’t mind the random references; that’s some of the stuff that makes this place great. But when you have a conversation carrying on that is pinned to the right side of the screen that’s more than an OT interjection; that’s an entire OT discussion. I would like it if there was a Chatty Cathy thread so that when it became clear that the wings comment was going to evolve like it did the people that were interested could hop over to the other thread. If people are too lazy to switch to another thread, which would have a link available on this page, then that’s probably a sign that the conversation isn’t that important anyway.

I think if we get a veteran it’ll be a backup type guy. The organization wants Varlamov or Neuvirth to take the net for the future but may want some experience just in case. Then they’d be looking at a guy like Marty Biron. Still, I’d prefer them to finish the year with the goalies they have, and go into next year with Neuvirth and Varlamov set to battle.

I couldn’t guess at what GMGM will do with our wealth of goaltending riches… Personally, I think any one of our 3 starters this season could backstop the team in the playoffs this season. Some pundits disagree, and think that none of the Caps goalies are up to the task. If you were looking for a #1 guy at the deadline, Turco is the guy whose name is out there a lot.
Turco is a terrible choice. He’s not any better than what we have, but much more expensive. If we are looking for a goalie to carry us now it’s too late.

I have no desire to have the Caps add a goalie at this point. We’ve got three guys who can do the job if called upon. Obviously, if health concerns linger then its another story. Hell I’d probably feel comfortable with Holtby too.
Add a D-man and I’m done if I’m GMGM. Only way I’m not is if I think I can get some serious value in another trade.

Kipper is just as inconsistent as Theo, albeit with a higher average skill level. But in the playoffs, it’s the 4-game trough that kills you, and Kipper is susceptible. Is it “[set] Free Milan” or “Free Milan [Take him, please]?”
My ability to post is only surpassed by my ability to pinch pennies.
Definitely “[set] Free Milan”. He’s been riding press box, and I know more than one Jackets blog is upset about it.

Prior to being fired, Hitchcock made a couple of remarks along the lines of Jurcina need to stop play BB hockey and play Hitchcock hockey.
Poor Juice. Here’s hoping he finally gets some game time.

On Draper having to wear a USA jersey at practice: "well at least the Wings can settle bets without involving gold plated desert eagles!"
FYI
Bears won over Norfolk Admirals in SO (Chris Bourque) after equalizing a few minutes before the end. Goalie Bacashihua made two terrific saves less than a minute in regulation.
1200+ comments… I shift+A’d this entire thread. Anything interesting happen?

Now drink with me deeply of the bourbon, scotch, and rye until such time as we are fighting drunk.

Missed ...
Debate on splitting out all the OT stuff to a PPP-like Chatty Cathy vs maintaining status quo in the daily Caps Clips. And where do stand, good sir?
BTW, did you catch my responses to your queries on DVR capturing from a several days ago?
haha i did indeed!. Well I think it is all good in the Clips. That being said, once it gets near about 800, i think it is in all of our best interests to carry the conversations over to an OT thread or a Clip, Part Deux thread. All the stuff in the thread was great, whether it be about old bay, the rest of the schedule, or Chatty Cathy discussion. It fluctuates from hockey talk to off topic in a natural way
I didnt! But I will definitely check it out, i really appreciate it!

Snow
If airports close this weekend, what will that do for the Pens game? Unfortunately I’m supposedly flying in on Saturday so my weekend is probably going to suck really bad.
I’d like to give Ovie a big shout out for the shift where he gave those 3 great hits to Boychuk and took 1. His energy line style and his scoring line skill are the main reasons why he is the greatest(and for the opposition, the most dangerous) hockey player in the world today, and a Pearson award winner.
What amazing date in history are we giong back to today, Mr. Peabody?
