I read that as"conditioning stints".

If Sloan gets, you know, stuck in Pennsylvania for a while because of snow, that would be OK with me.

Making room for whom. Our current roster:
Ovi, Backstrom, Knuble
Flash, BMo, Semin
Chimera (who’s injured), Laich, Fehr
Gordon, Bradley,Stecks
Green, SMo, Schultz, Poti, Pothier, Oisk
Theo, Neuvy
We currently have no player available to be a backup and one of our current guys (Chimera) is still hurting. Or do we have some pending roster moves that are about to happen?

…I thought it went without saying that I was talking about a potential trade move since the freeze ends tomorrow night, but apparently not.

I think (someone correct me if I’m wrong) the deal is that Varly, due to his waiver status, doesn’t ever have to be officially sent down on a “conditioning stint” (whereas the other two do or they’re exposed).

Yep, that’s exactly my assumption as well.

Oops, I read it first with only the headline and jumped. Not that I’d disagree with the move, just that it would have surprised me. Conditioning makes a lot of sense for a couple of guys who’ve been sitting the press box lately, which I noted this morning when discussing them taking unscheduled practice with Varlamov. Now that explains it.

Do you not have to be hurt to be sent on a conditioning stint?

The Caps sent Nylander to Grand Rapids for a conditioning stint after he had sat in the Press Box for what seemed like forever.

I think the only limit is that the player has to consent.

Maybe they are looking to move one or both of them as part of a package? Teams scouting the prospects in HER could kill two birds with one stone, the Bears play tonight and tomorrow before the trade freeze lifts.
Just a guess…

Because Sloan and Laing were ineligible to play for Hershey during the break. Guys on NHL rosters were officially on break until the 24th so they could not be sent down or on conditioning stints or practice until then. Probably a rule so teams don’t circumvent the eligibilty rules to play in the a during the break.
Just trying to capture the spirit of the thing...

Does this mean that Varly gets the start tonight?
Also, Q and TSlo could use some ice time.
Too bad TSlo has to come back. :)
What amazing date in history are we giong back to today, Mr. Peabody?
I believe I read on twitter somewhere that Varly was starting tomorrow and Holtby was starting tonight.
I checked out John Walton’s site for info. Hershey is leading by a substantial margin at the end of 1 period, 5-1. I checked out the link to the AHL statistics and, sure enough, Holtby’s in goal. I hope for a better day from him than he’s had, as of late. (Sunday he was pulled and Thursday, he lost a close one when the boys couldn’t stay out of the box.)

With 4 days until the deadline, I think the big wigs are setting up the roster for a trade.
Bah-Ram-Ewe, Ovechkin will wreck you. Fear the Furious Fleece!
Maybe . . .
From Ted’s Take a few minutes ago: “I don’t see us doing anything dramatic this week. I want to temper folk’s expectations.”
But maybe not?
He’s not GMGM, and owners/gms/coaches say that all the time and end up trading often.
Personally, I don’t know what else he would say.
They’re going to trade: “I see us changing the landscape of our squad. People, players, pundits, get ready.”
I don’t think anyone associated with a general manager like george mcphee would ever release a statement like this.
They don’t know if they’re gonna trade: “I don’t know what were going to do, we’ll keep you posted.”
Too ambiguous to assume anything.
By saying “anything dramatic”, it leaves the door wide open to a trade or two at the deadline. Which is what we expected.

Yeah, Ted’s no Snyder. He’s probably been surprised by some of the moves GMGM has made.

Is there some reason to do this to make sure that Laing and Sloan are eligible to be added to the clear day roster?
Atta dinnin stick a who!
Oh, innnteresting. So the idea would be to just leave them there after Wednesday?
Sometimes, you really just want to hit a b**ch.
No, just to get them enough games in the AHL to be eligible to play in the playoffs. When the conditioning stint ends we can’t keep them there, but they’ll be able to help HER when we send them down in the playoffs.
Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.

Perhaps a dumb question…but what happens if a trade is made that adds to the number of players on the active roster while Laing and Sloan are on their conditioning assignment? Would they then have to pass waivers to stay in Hershey and/or need re-entry to return to Washington?
by Kerry Fraser's Hairspray on Feb 27, 2010 10:01 PM EST via mobile reply actions
(to clarify, I mean a trade that pushes the current active roster to the max whilst Laing and Sloan are still “conditioning”)
by Kerry Fraser's Hairspray on Feb 27, 2010 10:03 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
They can’t stay in Hershey past the conditioning stint without passing through waivers. And if they pass through waivers and stay in Hershey longer than the conditioning stint, they can’t come back without going through re-entry.
The thing is, while on a conditioning stint, I believe they’re still on the Caps’ roster. So I’m not sure this opens up space for a trade at all.

(normally not an issue because players typically go on conditioning stints when they’re on IR, and they don’t come off IR until they return to the NHL team. But that’s not the situation here…)
