Friday Caps Clips: Final Four Friday
Your savory breakfast links:

- Veering off into our coverage of the coverage portion of today's Clips, there's plenty of Mike Milbury fallout to pore over. [Hockey Independent, Examiner, FanHouse, Puck the Media, and DCEx (and this one's not about Milbury's slur, but his reaction to the Dan Boyle slew foot of Alexander Semin)]

I expected Russia to medal, but I can’t say I’m hugely surprised. They had a good top 6, and good G. But that’s about it. Canada has a stacked everything (and a competent coach). Russia really needs to get over themselves if they ever want to get success in the Olympics with NHL players.

And the vast majority of that “good top 6, and good G” was really only on paper (for this week, at least).
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Yup, which is exactly why they play the games.
And to JSchon, I’m not surprised they were disjointed. They didn’t do anything significantly different from Turin, and still had the political BS of trying to showcase their KHL talent. Until Russia learns that being the best team is about an actual team, from management to the extra forward, they aren’t going to have any success in tournaments with the best players.

They have won the last two world championships, and on Canadian soil as well in 2009. So they have won international tournaments on small ice with basically the same lineup. Which is why I found it odd that they were so disjointed this time around. The Russian national team has been the best the past 2 years. They certainly didn’t look it this time around.
Jamal Mayers.

True, but you also have to remember that the World Championships are played during NHL play-offs, so not all of the best players are available to the national teams. With the Olympic teams, players were chosen. So, maybe the Canadian Olympic team was just that much better than the national teams in the IIHF?
Certainly the Russian coaching was horrible, there was no unity, and they stubbornly stuck to a losing style. This should be a stark wake-up call about the need for players to play complete games. People keep mentioning the disjointedness with the KHLers, but they have played together with many of the same players, with success, which makes it puzzling. Did they play the same style in the IIHF? How many other real choices of Russian NHL players are there to supplant the KHLers who are not really up to par?
It may be an international tournament, but it’s not a tournament of the best of the best. It may be of the best available, but I still doubt that considering players like Jamal Mayers make the team.
Russia’s top to bottom roster can’t even begin to compare to Canada’s top to bottom roster when Canada has their full talent pool to choose from.

Here are the rosters for the 2008 World Championship tournament. Pretty good players all around. It wasn’t like it was a Russian All-Star team vs the Canadian “C” squad.
By no means bad, but not even close to the overall quality of the Olympic team, and not even close to their best.

Right, but the Russians were without guys like Datsyuk, Malkin and Gonchar as well.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
And Canada had 1 of their top 7 D, none of their top 3 G, and players like Chimera, Gagner, and Kunitz.
The amount of talent Canada was missing is far more significant if you ask me.

I completely didn’t see the Russians playing as disjointed as they did. It did seem that there was definitely a plan to play a more fluid game and it definitely backfired. In Sochi it will be different with the larger ice rink, more room to maneuver and showcase individual moves which is what the Russians were looking for here and didn’t find. Hopefully, a coaching and philosophy change are in order for team Russia. I don’t know enough about their roster to argue whether Frolov or Kovalev should’ve been on the team.
Russia thinks it’ll be different in Sochi for the reasons you mentioned, but unless they change the way they approach things it won’t be any different. The large ice isn’t enough to change things and unless they get a superhuman boost from the home crowd they will still get smoked if they play like they did this year.

I know I should expect the league and their network to be beyond stupid at this point, but i’m still amazed by their incompetence sometimes.
Today’s issue: showing AHL games on NHL Network. Great idea, and one i’m definitely in favor of, but when the schedule of games you put on looks like this:
Saturday, Feb. 20 Binghamton Syracuse 1:00 ET (at New York State Fairgrounds)
Saturday, Feb. 27 Grand Rapids Lake Erie 7:00 ET
Sunday, Mar. 7 Lake Erie Chicago 4:00 ET
Sunday, Mar. 14 Grand Rapids Rochester 3:00 ET
Sunday, Mar. 21 Abbotsford Toronto 1:00 ET (US only)
Sunday, Mar. 28 Texas Chicago 4:00 ET
And you have a team that’s HISTORICALLY dominating people like Hershey is, it absolutely boggles my mind how you don’t put them on TV at least once. But hey, let’s put on the 5th place team in the North Division (Lake Erie) TWICE. And hey, while we’re at it, lets put on the 3rd worst team in the ENTIRE LEAGUE twice.

Oh yes. Hershey vs. WBS would be a great choice – the relationship between those two clubs isn’t exactly warm and fuzzy either.
No Alex, no ratings. Know Alex, know ratings.
We got lucky, it was 30 degrees out for the game.
Syracuse’s owner ponied up his own $ and could have lost quite a bit if the game hadn’t drawn well. Governor Patterson liked the idea and told the state fairgrounds people to make it happen and not charge the Crunch.
Other than crazy problems w/ parking, the game was a blast.
It is./was. Clearly the Griffs games were scheduled before Nylander got reassigned to Finland.
Now helping to keep an eye on all things Gr8 at Alex Ovetjkin.
How many Hershey games are televised? I think the NHL Network is just picking up the feeds from the home team, so maybe there just weren’t any scheduled at the time.
This is correct. Based on previous seasons, NHL Network only picks up AHL games already being televised and unless Hershey plays an away game against a team that televises some of games, Hershey’s games aren’t being televised. Hershey games have been shown in past years, but they were always away games for this reason.
Hockey Canada apologized Thursday for an impromptu party the Olympic women’s hockey team threw for itself on the Canada Hockey Place ice after winning the gold medal.
Canadian players, still wearing their uniforms and with gold medals draped around their necks, celebrated their victory by drinking champagne and beer at centre ice following a 2-0 win over the United States.
The International Olympic Committee said it will investigate the celebration, which included drinking by one of Canada’s underage players.
That very last point has some validity, but overall… gimme a break.

They also started clinics where users can go and be supervised by trained nurses, given clean needles and be allowed to stay until they come down and are “safe to be in public”.
They don’t actually inject them or administer the drugs but make sure the people are safe. It’s still illegal to posses and purchase the drugs, however.
Personally, I’m torn on it, I’m glad that they’re keeping the people safe, but it sends a message that you’re condoning the activity. I guess on the other hand, if people are going to do it anyway, might as well keep them safe
I’m glad that they’re keeping the people safe, but it sends a message that you’re condoning the activity.
This is the absolute worst way to look at it. Embrace the sentence that follows. When I was in college the Student Body had been lobbying the school to get a drunk shuttle to take us around campus and to “downtown” at night. This started years before I got there. The administration refused for years, then when I was a freshman there was a terrible DWI accident and 4 people died. Within a month we had the drunk shuttle. Keeping people safe isn’t condoning the behavior, it’s just being realistic.

I feel like the only person that thinks the drinking etc should have been kept in the locker room or somewhere else. :( I don’t care if they party it up, just not like how they did. I’m kind of surprised no one was like “You shouldn’t bring that out on the ice…” and then just took the team photo, which is what I read they were doing to begin with.

I dunno. I still find it a wee bit classless. My standards must be different. I’ve never seen anyone else do that sort of celebrating outside of the locker room. Why couldn’t they put the drinks down for a second for on-ice photos and then go back to it in private? Not that hard and they avoid all this dumb press and investigation stuff.
There are probably a lot of people who found this pretty classless, and it took place in the locker room. Not that I did (I thought it was fantastic), but my team didn’t lose.

Can’t see why Semin’s ice time was so low in the Canada game, especially in the third period. At that point I thought Russia’s only chances were in getting a couple of individual hero stunt goals to fire the team up.

I know he was the one who said it but could Knuble have had something done to his sausage finger to reduce the swelling?
Laing is always a good bet for surgery too.

Hamhuis Update
Read into this however you like.(more in link) From The Tennessean:
Assuming the Predators don’t sign him to a new contract in the next few days, they will have to decide whether to trade him before the deadline — picking up something in return — or to hold onto Hamhuis for a playoff run, then potentially see him leave for nothing.
Hamhuis wants to remain in Nashville long-term and believes his odds will increase if the Predators make the playoffs this season. He also realizes he could be gone before the stretch run even begins.
“It’s hard to ignore everything that’s going on because it’s out there a lot,‘’ Hamhuis said. "But for me, I enjoy playing here and I think we have a great chance to make a good run in the playoffs this year, so that’s the No. 1 focus right now.’’
Not much new there, a pretty fluffy piece from our beat writer.

I don’t think thats exorbitantly high, either. The other team that could do it is Chicago, and they still need cap relief via UFAs.

Nah. Chicago doesn’t have the cap space to take on Hamhuis and if they’ve got any real needs, it’s in goal.
No, I know Boston and Pittsburgh were in the hunt for Hamhuis, but I don’t think either of them can spare a scoring winger. Washington can spare both without significantly disrupting their chemistry and has the room to take on an additional cap hit.
No Alex, no ratings. Know Alex, know ratings.
I don’t buy the Chicago-needs-a-goalie stuff. I’d love to have their goaltending problem—their goalies have the 3rd and 7th lowest GAA in the league and eight shutouts.
Chicago needs to clear space—they could do so by acquiring Hamhuis in a deal with Sharp or Versteeg, because both players are not free agents and have larger cap hits. They get something for their run this year, and Hamhuis comes off the books so they can proceed to devote all their cap space to three guys.
I don’t think it will happen, but it would make sens.e
Pittsburgh doesn’t even have any scoring wingers, much less for trade. Out of Boston, we’re pretty confident Poile isn’t taking Ryder, so it’d have to be Wheeler, who is pretty popular there.

Anyone else think this could be a very quiet deadline day, given the number of teams in contention and the fact that a lot of trades have taken place already?
idk
I think the factor of teams like Edmonton, Carolina, Toronto, and Florida being in full-on sell mode is going to make it pretty lively. You have players like Cogliano, Souray, Whitney, Seidenberg, Ponikarovsky, Kaberle, Leopold, Stillman, Vokoun, and Booth who will make it worth a lot of contenders’ while if they acquire them. I think it’ll be busier than last year.

This is a good point. The only thing that I think might limit trades are the salary cap situations of teams like Chicago.

And let’s not ignore the fact that teams very much in the playoff hunt, but from different conferences, could be trading partners. As mentioned, the Caps with an abundance of scoring wingers and the Preds with an abundance of D-men would be logical choices. What makes it even more appealing is that the Caps can take on short-term salary and the Preds could get back someone like a Fehr, who is still on the lower end of the payroll.

They’ve got arguably the best defense corps in the league and are one of the top two or three defensive teams. The goalies’ stats are going to be good as a result. I don’t know how familiar you are with Huet but he wasn’t good when the Caps played the Flyers in the 2008 playoffs.

by The Ghost of Bebop on Feb 26, 2010 9:50 AM EST up reply actions
Chicago’s goalie stats are inflated because they have a great D that allows the fewest shots per game in the league. The D may be able to carry the goalies in the playoffs as well, but if I were a Chicago fan I’d be worried about heading into the playoffs without a goalie who has won so much as a single round in the NHL playoffs and no goalie who has ever handled the rigors of being a full time NHL starter.

I’ve heard that Stan Bowman (Chicago’s GM) says they somehow have enough space to ad a prorated $5 million salary, but I don’t know how much of that is posturing on his part. Regardless, Versteeg makes more money than Hamhuis so they would save cap room this year with that trade, and more importantly they would clear space for next year since Hamhuis will be a UFA. I’ve heard Versteeg (along with many others) may be on the block for that reason.

Yeah, Poile would have to add in more to get Versteeg, but maybe not that much. I don’t know anything about the Preds’ forward prospects other than Wilson (and Santorelli’s name thrown about in potential trades with the Caps), but if you add in a good forward prospect to provide a cheaper replacement for Versteeg’s spot then that would probably be enough. Versteeg is definitely in Quenneville’s doghouse.

umm, did he watch the video of himself punching laing when he was ground (and facing the other way)? i suppose cam might be techinically correct since what was going on between him and laing wasn’t really a “fight” as much as it was a beat down.
“He had his head down and I was doing my job." actually, brads head was up since he didnt have the puck and hadn’t for at least three seconds. i dont think getting a major/game misconduct after 40 seconds of ice time is in your job description, but hey, it’s a living.
"When you watch it in regular speed, you can see he had no idea I was coming," Janssen said. "But it shows in slow motion that it was a little late." actually i watched it live and could tell it was more than a little late. and he had no idea you were coming because he was not involved in the play. does janssen think he was some some sort of stealthy ninja warrior who can sneak up on a guy and slit his throat?

Easy theory on Ovechkin:
From the beginning, he was disgusted with the Russia team coaching. He is professional enough not to take those issues to the press, but he was so disgusted, he knew that he would not be able to give an interview without giving away how he felt. So he decided not to talk any more than he absolutely had to.

Thanks for that memory of going to the computer center at 2 in the morning when I was in grad school so I could get my programs written in PASCAL to compile on the Amdahl mainframe (PC’s were only a rumor in those days, kids).

Folks, I picked up three tickets to the Rink Bears game trip, intending to bring my daughter, but the snowstorm earlier this month had me switching weekends with my ex-, and now she’s not going to be coming to the game.
This means I now have a third ticket and nobody to use it.

IMO Weber’s hit on Ovechkin deflated RUS a bit just as they were getting their legs under themselves after the initial CAN blitz.
eh
Weber really didn’t hit him that hard, did he? I’m not buying that. Ovie’s a tough guy.

I didn’t say it deflated OV. Just that seeing their ace getting lined up successfully took a little starch out of RUS (if indeed there was any starch to begin with).
Given how many times I’ve see AO get hit and respond I don’t think it was a factor. There were so many other problems I just can’t buy this.

No, Tikhonov is probably right. I mean, we always see Ovechkin shrink out of a game and become invisible when he gets hit, right?

Strange
Lepisto and Juice both playing today and getting decent ice time for the tournament. Somehow never thought of either of them as Olympians.
Well, needless to say, it’s largely a product of where they’re from. I mean, Ole Kristian Tollefsen is an Olympian.

couple of other updates from tarik
Semyon Varlamov’s pads have arrived! He’s on the ice for the second half of practice.
For the past 45 minutes, Caps have been going over systems, with Coach Bruce Boudreau sometimes stopping the drills to bark instructions.

I liked the Juneau article. I never knew any of that stuff about him. He’ll always have a special place in Caps lore with his OT winning goal to get us to the finals in ’98.
