My position is that not letting them hit is a function of male paternalism and a desire to protect the women. I’d say that they should be allowed to hit, but that’s just the opposite; a man imposing his view of how they should play. Ultimately, my position is that the women should be allowed to decide to hit or not. What do the women here think? Should women’s hockey be hitting or no-hitting? And has anyone ever heard about a women’s hockey governing body discussing a rule change on these lines?
Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.

Exactly, the frailty will be off-set by less violent collisions.

It’s pretty clear that the women in this game would like to be allowed to hit each other. Getting physical after the whistles.

Well what about you? I know you’re all for a good hit from behind but how do you feel about clean hitting?

Nice :)
I think that if you’ve got women of similar skill levels in the game, I’d love to be able to hit. Women will sometimes yell at you for playing the body on defense or in front of the net, and I think that’s absolutely ridiculous. It’s still a contact sport. I learned how to take a hit and did checking drills, because that’s all part of hockey.
It’s hard with the limited reach of the game, though. I think you could implement checking in Division I college hockey, because I imagine there’s a pretty even skill level among schools. I don’t know for sure that’s true, though – I played club hockey, and there was a huge drop off from the “didn’t make the DI team” girls to the “I just started playing hockey” ones.
When I started playing, I wouldn’t have wanted checking to be part of what I had to deal with, since the skill set is so different from anything I’d done before. And that’s a fair wish, since kids’ hockey, when everyone is new to the game, doesn’t have checking. But women seem to come to the game at an older age on average, and there needs to be a mechanism for getting those women into the game too. I don’t want to scare of potential players because they’re worried about getting hit. As it is, that’s pretty much the first reaction people have to my playing hockey – “wow… I could never do that, it’s so violent.”
So I think it’s a complicated question, and I don’t know if it’s ever been considered, but I’m certainly not opposed. Sometimes, you really just want to hit a bitch.

:) I hadn’t thought about it in a while, but “hit a bitch” was a phrase we used a lot on my college team. I think it was started by our coach, who was this small middle-aged guy, pretty soft spoken most of the time, but would sometimes just bust out with phrases like that when we needed a boost.

Giving it a test-drive. I even censored myself so JP doesn’t yell at me.

This is eerie. My sister, who is on her way to playoff games this weekend, said this when I talked to her today.
That is such an awesome response, complete with amazing punctuation at the end. I really do appreciate your input. I have no sisters and haven’t spent much time around women’s hockey so I’m still getting a feel for what I think it should be. At the same time I’m preparing for the possibility that I’ll have daughters and then I’ll be following girls hockey for almost two decades so I’m trying to get familiar with the dynamics.

Thanks and you’re welcome!
I may bring the question up with my team next week, because I’m now curious how other female players feel about it. I have never really had a discussion about checking in women’s hockey beyond, “no.” If I do, I will report back on their responses.

This may be the first time I ever yelled “fucking hell” during a women’s hockey game.

So they just compared the chick that scored to a “female Sidney Crosby” and then said she always wears a strand of pearls. I really hope Crosby does too. haha
LOL. How can you make that mistake? I figured it was a staple of modern dirty parlance.

Do you think GMGM should sign Szabados as a rental for the stretch run? I would rather have her than Marty Turco.

It seems like they take a little longer to shoot, like it’s better telegraphed (one of the problems Jurcina had, for example). The passes out of the zone are absolutely awesome. Are the longer shifts normal for the women’s game, or is that a function of the depth the US is playing with?

Well it sucks that the US will lose, but Szabados was amazing to watch. Canada should thank their lucky stars she was “on” tonight.
Yeah. There’s really no way you can be upset with how they played, and a silver medal is nothing to scoff at.
