Well, hopefully once the full story comes out it won’t make this look too bad.

I couldn’t hear anything, in library and no headphones, but it doesn’t look too bad to me. Correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t he just grab the camera that’s close to his face, twist it, and walk away? Not like he beat up anyone or something.
They laughed at Columbus, they laughed at Fulton, they laughed at the Wright brothers. But they also laughed at Bozo the Clown.
he went out of his way to grab the camera, it wasn’t in his path. you can see him ducking to the side and making a surprise attack.

Grow up Ovie. Pathetic. I’m very disappointed.

You’ve got the whole story, I trust?
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
See reporter/fan/person with camera.
Go out of way to push it away angrily.
Walk off.
Obviously the “whole story” will come, but let’s be realistic, he pulled a childish move.
Not the best week for Great 8. Is there really any point trying to defend it? It’s just another bad day for Ovie and we’ll all be over it in a week or two goals later. It’ll be forgotten in the annuals of YouTube soon.

See person with camera, holding it less than a foot away from your face. With mild use of force (and CERTAINLY not causing any harm to the actual person), move camera away from your face. Walk off.
Without any more information, we can’t jump to conclusions.

Why any use of force?
That’s all I’m saying. He couldn’t just walk away, say no thanks? It’s just a bad move on both parts, but for a guy who for a week has gone of out his way to avoid media, it just looks really bad.
We’ll hear more about it, but it doesn’t change the fact he handled it in a bad way.
We’ll move on and forget all about it I’m sure.

I never said that it was a good move, but I absolutely understand why he would do something like that.
To be totally honest, I’ve never been critical of athletes/celebrities shoving cameras away, whether I like them or not. Shoving an actual person or breaking the camera is obviously a different story.
Ovechkin (or most anyone else who was involved in a publicized incident like this) is almost never able to experience a private moment. Say all that you will about that being a side product of the celebrity status that makes the rest of their life very easy compared to many others, but that HAS to get you. It just has to. And when a camera is being held so closely to you that they could count your nose hairs on video, I’m willing to give anyone a bit of leeway.

Oh I agree that he’s living a life in a spotlight that never goes away, but pushing someone away like this just isn’t the best thing to do.
It’s just a bad moment for Ovie that will go away eventually, but fuel some fire from rival fans and such.
There were better ways to handle this, but in the heat of a moment after a frustrating loss I see WHY he acted this way. I just don’t agree with it or find any reason to defend it further than “bad day, stuff happens, lets move on.”

needs a long talk with Coach when he gets back, and also #needsmoreNateEwell.
Now helping to keep an eye on all things Gr8 at Alex Ovetjkin.
It’s been a long week. We keep reminding ouselves that these guys are young, but I’m sorry, 24 is old enough that he has to be able to function without Nate. And I’m saying that on general principle, not what it might have to do with this video.
Also, great world we live in that we think we’re entitled to get whatever we want and if we don’t get it, we just post to blogs and youtube.

If someone started taping me after one of the worst performances of my life on one of the biggest days of my life, yea, I might react this way too. Then again, I’m not getting paid $9 million a year to behave.
Ovie is impulsive, I guess, and we live and die with that – on and off the ice.

Then again, I’m not getting paid $9 million a year to behave.
Neither is Ovechkin. He’s paid $9 million a year to win games for the Capitals.
Well, any professional athlete’s contract contains provisions regarding off-ice/field conduct detrimental to the team/league, so to an extent, he is getting paid to comport with certain standards of behavior.

Even though he's not as colorful
Sidney Crosby probably gets mobbed as much, if not more, than Ovie and always handles things properly (as far as I know). Ovie and every other player should too, no excuses. Having just been beaten handily by Canada doesn’t atone fully.

I wonder about that since Crosby has said he doesn’t go out much and when with the team he likes staying in the hotel and ordering room service. Ovie, on the other hand, likes being out and about. Just based on their habits, I’d say Ovie is in more situations in which he could be mobbed.

What does this video clip show other than him walking over and covering up the camera?

According to the Deadspin article’s translation (which is admittedly imperfect, e.g. Ovie weighing 100 pounds), the girl was just a Russian fan who whipped out her camera when she saw Alex walk by. Apparently she pleaded “do not scrap”. Not sure I trust any of the translation though.
DC Landing Strip - Waxed and Ready to Go
Right. And my understanding of the source site is that it’s pretty much a trashy gossip site, so who knows? I didn’t see any of the other stuff (i.e. off-camera) substantiated. You?
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Nope, but I’d prefer he didn’t put himself in a situation like this where he can be ridiculed (which is sure to happen), especially in light of his attitude toward the media in Vancouver. Bleh whatever. Is the NHL back on?

Amen to that. Saw this video early this morning and had one thought – eff.

According to the Puck Daddy site she was saying “do not drop” but some said the audio wasn’t good enough to tell.
(Yes, I know about the avatar hounding - just pretend mine is invisible.)
Deadspin and Puck Daddy are both wrong with translation
The girl repeats “Do not break (camera) please”. I guess Tuvan will agree.
Aside from that, the site (I guess its life.ru), where video was first posted, is devoted to cheap sensations, gossips, papparazzi shots at stars.
Ovie could behave better, thats true. In the long run, It’s just an accident, which soon will be forgotten.

The problem is that’s the best possible interpretation of the clip, and even that best case isn’t good.
by Hangsleben's Heroes on Feb 25, 2010 7:55 PM EST up reply actions
Nah, that’s entirely reasonable. I mean, people can point out that he sort of turned to do this, but the camera was clearly inches from his face, and it’s not like he took it out of her hands and threw it.
Sure, Ovie may not have handled this the “right” way, but, until/unless we hear more, we can’t assume that it wasn’t a reasonable reaction.
by sixsevenfiftysix on Feb 25, 2010 9:01 PM EST up reply actions
Ovie talking on his cell phone walks out of somewhere with three males, possibly friends. In their path someone is video taping him. As he passes near with his friends he covers the lens with his hand, pushing the camera away without force as he continues to walk past with his friends.
No dropped camera. No thrown camera. No Ovie yelling at the person.
We have no idea the context. We don’t know who was filming. We only have a lot of speculation (mostly negative).
Unfortunate timing because of all the recent media whining about his inaccessibility, but I don’t see his actions as unreasonable in light of what little we know about the incident.
(Yes, I know about the avatar hounding - just pretend mine is invisible.)
Aside from an injury, these Olympics could not have gone much worse for Ovechkin.

game changing moment against the Czech team, the only Russian with life in the Slovakia game and played at a point per game pace, right? The Canada game was no walk in the park but its not as if he was stink on ice the entire time.

I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt. You have to look at his entire body of work, which we have, and the context, which we don’t. If other people want to jump to conclusions – whatev.
Russian Machine very rarely breaks. Oh and f**k Brooks Orpik.
Of course you will, you love the guy. OV went out of his way to walk up to that camera and push it aside. Not sure what more conclusion you need to draw from that.

It’s simply false that he “went out of his way to walk up to that camera”.
by sixsevenfiftysix on Feb 25, 2010 11:23 PM EST up reply actions
I agree. It’s an “L” turn to go down the pathway. Granted, Ovie took the inside of the turn by which he could turn the camera aside while in his group took the outside of the turn, but there was none of the maliciousness that some posters are attributing to his actions.
(Yes, I know about the avatar hounding - just pretend mine is invisible.)
Actually...
Ovechkin looks like he’s trying to walk behind the person with the camera (like he’s trying to avoid the camera), but when the camera continues to follow him, he turns again and covers it up.
that’s what i thought as well.

Hes certainly not doing himself any favors, but at that point I dont think he cares. He came up lame in the biggest game (thus far) of the season and was slightly irritated by a camera in his face. I dont know if i’d react any differently but the guys gotta know he’s being watched all the time and everything he does is scrutinized and he basically comes off as a jerk. We all know he is a bubbly vivacious personality but this doesnt shine well on people who dont really know him.
If he really wanted to, he could’ve pushed that girl down by her camera.
All he did was cover the lense.
I can’t stand people who think atheletes are ABOVE us all, and should act accordingly.
They are special fucking people, i mean Ovie is a god, but he just lost the olympics, he was on the phone, in a bad mood. I would’ve acted the same way. . .except backchecked a little more
Anyone who reacts to this in any nature similar to, “Ovie is a jerk”, is a completely unrealistic, unsympathetic, hater.
I am cranky. . .we need NHL. . .23 games left? I WANT CAPITALSS
Bah-Ram-Ewe, Ovechkin will wreck you. Fear the Furious Fleece!
Guess I’m a hater then. I think this is the cherry on the cake of a bad week for him, a week he could have handled a helluva lot better than he did, on and off the ice.

Agreed with the off-ice part, but when I think of handling oneself poorly on the ice, I think of stupid/dangerous play or some form of poor sportsmanship. And while I saw some less-than-Ovi-level play in that last game, I don’t think I saw any of the rest of those things.

He definitely had a bad week. I don’t know how much more he could have done on the ice(other than backchecking), it just looked like he was off his game.
As far as the off-the-ice stuff, he definitely should not have pushed the camera girl aside; however, I feel he is justified, and in no way deserves the amount of scrutiny he’s gotten for it.
