It was probably a good hit (By Semin)

Honestly, maybe i’m seeing through homer glasses here, but I didn’t see anything at all wrong with Semin’s hit, nothing even penalty worthy at all. Certainly not a “dangerous hit” as it was described by the telecasters. I suppose there is the possibility that you could call roughing on it (just like about any hit), and perhaps boarding since he went into the boards pretty hard, but it really just looked clean to me.
Boyle’s reaction however was inexcusable. I know there is no fighting in International play, but no real idea how this kind of thing is looked at. Pretty sure in the NHL this gets you a 5 gamer on a absolutely cheap shot away from the play (or a slap on the wrist, who really knows with the wheel of justice), but is there any review of this kind of play outside of the game officials?
Semin’s hit maybe was charging, and it certainly seemed ill-advised to me, but the penalty there was questionable. I cannot understand how Boyle got/will get less than a match penalty/major penalty and a suspension of some length for the slew foot, though. You’d definitely get suspended in the NHL if you did that, right? It was a very dangerous play – he drove Semin’s head toward the ice and pinned Semin’s leg between his.
Despite what the idiot announcers said
Semin’s hit was perfectly clean. Boyle lost it. He should be suspended (because Semin could have been concussed easily from the fall), but he likely won’t be.
There's a fine line between arrogance and ignorance and only I manage to erase that line.

Ok, I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought so. I watched the replay that was shown a couple of times during the Sweden game and it looked like a good hit to me. At the end, they showed the highlights of the CAN/Russia game one more time and JR finally said that Boyle’s hit on Semin was a little cheap shot, yes he said little as in not a big deal.
Lobbies: Green, Carlson, Orlov
I’d love to have heard the CBC take. Listening to ass clown #2 Olczyk go off for about two minutes how it was a high hit – while Boyle was basically half squatting – was maddening. Barely a comment, if any, about what a scumbag move that was by Boyle.
Just watched Slovakia-Sweden with Kenny Albert and Joe M. When Emrick retires, I hope the shit-can doughboy Edzo with him.
Russian Machine very rarely breaks. Oh and f**k Brooks Orpik.
You would have been SOL….CBC (aka HNIC) isn’t covering the Olympics in Canada this time out. CTV and its sports affiliates (TSN and Sportsnet is)
For every action, there is an equal and opposite criticism.

I didn't see anything wrong with it either
Then I started acting like that kid wondering “is this real life?” Semin throwing a nice hit.
When I saw it I was insensed. When they called 2min for interference, I just laughed. Seeing the replay, you clearly see the expression on the face of Boyle, he’s clearly trying to hurt an unsuspecting Semin, with 10min to go on a 7-3 game. That was in a nutshell everything I hate about the canadian hockey style.
Did someone see the Malkin incident with a Canadian player in the bench. Can someone tell me who that was and if anybody knows what that was about? Malkin doesn’t strike me as the kind of guy who would trash talk.

95% positive it was Getzlaf. I was too busy yelling at Dan Boyle to hear what was being said.
I like Semin and I hate Boyle, so needless to say I lost (even more) respect for Boyle. But before tonight I liked Getzlaf and disliked Malkin. Now I dislike both. I don’t care what Malkin said or did to get under Getzlaf’s skin, but to stand up on the bench and yell directly into the ear of a player who’s on the ice at the end of a blowout is just a total trash move.

Malkin doesn’t trash talk, he just slew foots and kicks.

I wouldn’t worry about Boyle’s hit, Milbury said it was OK.

At least Boyle admitted he shouldn’t have done what he did. He wasn’t expecting to get nailed in a 7-3 game with less than 3 minutes to go. Big mistake, this is hockey, and you have to keep your head up.
Semin’s hit was a clean hit if Boyle had the puck….Boyle did let it go ahead of the hit, but since it was called “Interference”, it means the refs saw it as a clean, but late, hit.
We’ll see what happens when the Caps play the Sharks in the Fin…oh wait, that’s right, Boyle does play for the Sharks… so he can get his revenge in the 2010-11 season. I’m sure Boyle, Marleau, Thornton and Heatley enjoyed the preview of the playoff goaltender last night…
Let's go Caps!
Semin’s penalty was for highsticking.
In other words
Ref: “oh crap, that hit was actually clean………uh…….highsticking!”

I don’t see where Semin got Boyle with the stick….I see where you could call Boyle for it in the retaliation. Maybe the calls should have been reversed?
Ah well, not an issue now. The issue is when the five Caps get back to practice and how they respond to their lack of Olympic success…
Let's go Caps!

i have no idea. Didn’t look much like interference to me. The world may never know.

I’m almost positive that the referee had his arm raised before the hit (by Semin on Boyle) actually occurred. Can someone verify this? I remember them saying “and there will be a penalty from that” and yelling at NBC for being so stupid.

Maybe the high stick was before the hit? At least that would explain something because that hit was clean.

I believe the announcers did review at one point that Semin’s high stick knocked off Crosby’s helmet before Semin legally hit Boyle. So, it was delayed since Boyle had the puck.
That would make a lot more sense. I’ve heard about this high stick on Crosby but haven’t seen it yet.

knocked his helmet right off. It didn’t look like a hard hit either; helmet must have been worn quite loose.

That’s Crosby for you — he’s a master of the fine art of drawing penalties, including wearing his helmet loose enough to be easily knocked off. And, of course, he’s a good little diver — eudyptyla minor.
BTW, eudyptyla minor, the scientific name for “little fairy penguin” translates literally to “good little diver”.

That wasn’t late. That was a perfectly clean hit. No high stick. No interference. Nothing. Fucking bullshit. I will say that the Olympics have been reffed far better than the NHL has been this year, but this incident was terrible.

What got me is the Canadians were throwing their bodies around during the whole game. How can Boyle be pissed off when he gets checked? It makes no sense. Canadians threw at least 10 great hits like that in the game.
Yea, I still dislike the guy but props to him for acknowledging how inappropriate his retaliation was.

if a Russian slew footed a canadian like that and got just a minor penalty, the pitchforks and torches would be out. But Boyle does it and it’s ok? I’mg lad Boyle recognizes that his retaliation was over the line, but that was a dangerous take down that could have resulted in serious injury. he won’t be suspended from the semi-final game, but he should be. There is absolutely no excuse for pulling bullshit like that.

So then what is all of your’s take on when Semin cross-checked Crosby in the back of the head? Obviously he can’t be suspended since Russia is done, but oddly that hit doesn’t seem to be drawing any ire here…
I saw it. I thought Semin should have gotten penalized for lameness – it was a half-assed attempt at 5mph that mostly missed except for a glancing tap on the helmet with one glove.
It was to the head yes so in the NHL they might have penalized it if they saw it, otherwise it was an unfriendly reminder to keep your head on a swivel.
It was however nothing compared to the hits to the head Green takes 3 times a game that never get called.
I didn’t see it, and if Milbury didn’t latch onto it and make it a big deal in the intermission I can’t imagine it was all that bad. Certainly not like a blatant slew foot.
