It’s not something that any nationally-televised commentator should say. Just goes to show that NBC figures no one watches their hockey broadcasts any way.
I was very annoyed how he went on and on about the Semin hit and how horrible it was while defending what Downie did in a “good for him way.” One was a hockey play and the other was actually dangerous and stupid.
I look to the future because that's where I'm going to spend the rest of my life.

what's with saying it's ok to get a 2 minute minor
for that outrageously blatant attack. It was retaliatory. It was not in the flow of the game. It was clearly meant to hurt. And it’s just damned dangerous.

the announcers after semin threw that hit were pathetic. I didn’t think it was high or dirty….maybe excessive considering it was 7-3
which raises the question which was more excessive: throwing a hit when your team is down by 4 or slew footing someone when your team is up by 4 about to go on the pp?
"Hey anyway I can get my name out there 30 years from now is great," Steckel said. "They will be like, ‘Who was that guy?’ Then they’ll look at the stats and say, ‘Well, at least that guy was really good on face-offs.’"
Getzlaf?
Generally, I like Getzlaf – Perry is the worthless thug with a visor on that team that Getzlaf banks pucks off of for goals- but what was Getzlaf doing talking smack to Malkin up by four goals with hardly any time left? I wish the elbow took some teeth with it. And believe me, I’m no Malkin fan, just like to see a bit of class out there.
For a team that had to play-in to get to this round, the Canadians are sure arrogant.
Boyle deserves an IOC suspension. Slew foot is as dirty as you can get.
Bright side – I didn’t think Luongo was fantastic….
As an aside, unless you were born before a certain year (1971, maybe?), you’re required to wear a visor in Olympic competition.
For a country that prides themselves in friendliness and hospitality Getzlaf and Boyle surely gave them a bad representation, from my vantage point. I thought there was supposed to be a general mutual respect during international competition. Why Getzlaf feels the need to run his mouth, with time winding down and a four goal lead, is beyond me. If I were Canadian I would be ashamed to see those two players wearing my country’s name on the front.

I just don’t think you should be making contact with guys that aren’t on the ice. It was a little love tap to the face and not a big deal but I don’t think it’s right. It’s really Whatev. Nothing is going to happen to anyone since this isn’t the NHL.
I look to the future because that's where I'm going to spend the rest of my life.
You’re right, but you also shouldn’t be leaning over the bench into the ice “area” and running your mouth. If Malking went over the bench unprovoked, shame on him. But he shouldn’t have to sit there and have a jackass screaming in his ear.
In any event, the lineman should have done his job there.

From my vantage point (watching NBC at a bar in NYC) it didn’t look like Canada had no D. Although Russia got so sloppy and seemed to be skating with no playbook or discipline so it might have been Russia more than Canada. I also didn’t tune in until it was already 6-1 (prior commitment, which sucked). Ugh. Wanted Russia to win it. Well now I guess I’ll root for the USA… and Flash.
Good point, I guess I imagine that it’ll be good for Ovie to be back and really in charge of his own team again. The lack of coaching on the team tonight was ridiculous.

Well, I guess there is one good thing about hockey being relegated to the secondary NBC channels in that the general non-hockey public is not subjected to Milbury’s bufoonish commentary. From the Germans getting peed on last night to the eurotrash tonight. I’ve watched a lot of these Olympics and can’t say I’ve heard any commentators for any of the other sports with such remarks about any of the athletes. I mean Germany was outmatched last night and the Russians certainly didn’t show up tonight, but you can show some class when analyzing the games.
I get that it’s his schtick and he certainly gets a reaction, I just don’t see how it makes watching hockey any more attractive to non-fans that they might hope to lure in.

For a guy who’s a jerk to the media, it was a pretty solid move on Ovie’s part to even grant an interview ten minutes after having his heart crushed.

Wyshynski’s going on a Russian/Ovechkin anti-press crying spree on twitter. Wonder how he’d feel if his dreams were crushed and he was expected to talk to media minutes later.
Perhaps he’s forgetting Ovechkin isn’t getting paid NHL money here, and it’s not his job field the same 5 questions to every single blogger.
Really? Looked more observational than anything, and he made an observation about how he handled the press here, relative to what he normally does. I don’t see how that’s a crying spree.

“Never claimed it was media’s right. Just right thing. But it was something more important than video game launch, so no AO.”
“Here’s the thing: Ovie’s great with the press. He’s great for game. But his behavior here turned off a lot of media, & that’s frustrating.”
“Apologies for having a job to do. AO is wonderful with the press when AO wants to be. Which makes this frustrating.”
Wonder if he’s got any cheese to go with it..
I see where you’re coming from but he needs to be a bit more accessible here especially since his main point for avoiding the press before was because he had to focus on his game.

Don’t you kinda have to do that as an athlete or coach? That’s why Jim Mora and Dennis Green are such enjoyable quotes.
Seriously though, I appreciate the passion and enthusiasm he brings to the game. He’s a great quote and a good interview. But (I’m presuming) Wysh’s frustration is that he picked and chose his spots, not to mention provided a quote about his main adversary which might have been construed as snarky and beneath him. And considering how well he treats press otherwise, it was disappointing.
Considering how good he is with the media, if he’d come into the tournament, was all business and stated as such to everyone (including his homeland press), he’d probably have been a lot better off. It wouldn’t surprise me in the least to see that whatever other quotes he gives tonight that, put against what he said the other day by him and other members of the delegation (cough, Tretiak, cough), it wouldn’t surprise me to see some “mouth writing checks your arse can’t cash” statements from this.

Well, I think the bad coaching was a way bigger problem for Russia. The Czechs gave up the insurance goal on a boneheaded decision, but there was no guarantee they were gonna beat Kipper to tie it anyway and it’s not like bad coaching sunk them all tournament. They didn’t really underachieve.
Bykov, on the other hand, made terrible decisions with his line up and strategy all tournament, and consistently had the Russians under-prepared and under-performing all tournament in addition to a stupid goalie decision in tonight’s game.
The Czech’s may or may not have benefited from a better decision tonight, but I think the Russians certainly would have benefited more and come closer to their potential by having a coach who could develop a good, disciplined strategy and properly prepare the team for their opponent.

doesn’t change the fact that what he did was dirty and wrong, but he did admit to “losing his head” on the Semin cheap shot. He also acknowledged that Semin “probably made a clean hit.” So at least he’s not an idiot like J.R. or Milbury.
Of course it’s an admission of guilt, that’s why I respect what he did. There was absolutely no reason why he had to admit guilt, and he could have easily continued to make up some excuse about why Semin’s hit was dirty. But he didn’t, and instead he manned up and admitted that he lost his cool. Gotta respect him for that. Would he have admitted it if he had lost and was bitter?
