the sad thing is mike green is probably rooting for canada too, just not for their blue line

So, MG would probably like a real high scoring, non-defensive affair?
Too bad he can’t join Team Russia and call himself Mikhail Davidovich Zelenkov.

Go Team Russia! Dump Canada.
And if Russia needs any incentive, remember the World Junior Games of 2004-2005. That was where the Canadians were going for Ovi and Mike Richards injured him in the shoulder — separated shoulder.. Ovi was out for several weeks after that. There are pictures of Malkin trying to comfort him, along with pictures of Ovi with his arm in a sling.
Rocking the Red since 1975
incentive will not be a problem; if they lose to Canada with no hardware they may not be let back into the country.
erskine has scored...now i can die in peace
That makes me hearken back to the lockout when the anti-Ovechkin folks tried to paint Ovechkin as a wuss because he cried after Russia lost the WJC (I believe it was that year).

yeah it’s def. a lot like game 7. i hate to say this, but i think Russia let down their guard and now they’re paying for it.
It looks like Ovi, Semin, and Varly will be at Caps practice on Sunday.

Especially defense — I don’t think that concept even exists with Team Russia. I’m not surprised. Frankly, I argue that the US squad that showed up against Canada could beat them.
If team Canada learned anything about raising the intensity of play and throwing down the hammer hard and fast, they have the loss to Team USA to thank.

Kinda hard to fault thefirst three first period goals as individual tallies, and if it was only one or two, you could let it slide. But as a whole, it’s horrible goalie work. And the two in the second were terrible.

I’d say the Boyle one is the only one in the first three I don’t like. It’s tough because there was traffic but it wasn’t a hard shot and Nabokov wasn’t square and looked smaller than he is and had lots of holes. Not a good combination.

A Swedish victory over Slovakia is by no means guaranteed. The Slovaks have come out on top against Tre Kronor before, not the least of which in the infamous preliminary round 3-0 defeat in Turin.
"In the depths of winter, I learned there was in me an invincible summer" ~Albert Camus
Yeah, and I acknowledged that possibility. But like I said, SWE has looked the best and most consistent of anyone through the preliminary games. I don’t see them tanking, so SLO would have to play a great game. They are 4 years older than Turin, and rely heavily on old players. I think the back to back will be tough on those guys. Also, Halak didn’t even look that good last night so I don’t see him stealing. We’ll see how it plays out but I’d bet SWE wins.

the ruleing for slewfooting is:
A minor penalty, or a 5 minute major plus an automatic Game Misconduct or a Match penalty, all called under the tripping rule
so international play with is usually harsher that the NHL when it comes to dangerous plays does not seem to care too much
"Hey anyway I can get my name out there 30 years from now is great," Steckel said. "They will be like, ‘Who was that guy?’ Then they’ll look at the stats and say, ‘Well, at least that guy was really good on face-offs.’"
High hit means bullshit in hockey, it was a clean hit.
We’re not playing rugby,
Slew foot along with a stick to the face taking Semin down
I was commenting on the replay, are you referring to Semins clean hit being shoulder high?
I hope not about Boyle’s stick across his face vertically, torquing Semin’s head backwards onto the ice while taking his legs out
i was waiting on somebody to respond with this :)

What happened?
They laughed at Columbus, they laughed at Fulton, they laughed at the Wright brothers. But they also laughed at Bozo the Clown.
Right now Bryzg saves on Crosby. But the first two — a complete disaster. RUS not moving, no defense.
I thought Bryz was fairly solid actually.

Totally fucking mickey mouse. Semin was getting a penalty for what? That was a beauty hit. If this is the NHL, Semin gets nothing and Boyle gets three games.
But Brawndo's got what plants crave. It's got electrolytes.
You’re running under the assumption that the NHL has a disciplinary system that doesn’t suck more dicks than Eddie O and Milbury.

have you always hated their team? or is it just now because of their cast (ie. crosby, richards)? just curious
With me it’s mainly the arrogance and sense of entitlement. It’s also partially why I hate the Sweidish team.

did he just say he doesn’t blame boyle for going after semin. so now we are encoraging illegal and dangerous hits?
"Hey anyway I can get my name out there 30 years from now is great," Steckel said. "They will be like, ‘Who was that guy?’ Then they’ll look at the stats and say, ‘Well, at least that guy was really good on face-offs.’"
yeah, i hate how they are trying to justify boyle. semin was going off for whatever it was anyway, there was no need for boyle to retaliate in that manner.
just annoys me there are ways to retaliate (ie scoring a goal on the pp or landing a solid check if the chance arises) but trying to injure a player by slew footing while hitting them in the face with the stick is immature and dangerous.

You’re not insane, Eddie O is just a terribly biased announcer. He’s fine when he doesn’t have a horse in the race, but when he announces Penguins games and every Russia game he did in the Olympics he clearly was playing favorites. There was no other reason to continuously repeat that Semin’s hit was high and dangerous (it wasn’t either) in an attempt to justify Boyle’s far more dangerous and dirty hit. I was annoyed that JR defended Boyle as well, but I guess you should expect that from a former teammate.

I still go with the simple fact that Canada got more games in under its belt, and one last night, and in this format, that helps a team play more as a team and with more confidence when, before you know it it’s all over given the limited number of games.
How many games total to win gold? It’s pretty much equivalent to one NHL playoff series to determine gold in the Olympics

Mr Ebersol,
I am deeply offended by the comments made by NBC hockey announcer Mike Milbury during your Olympic coverage. I do not understand why you give him a stage to make offensive and inflammatory remarks about other countries and players. The Olympics should celebrate achievements of the world’s athletes. Mr Milbury is an affront to the Olympic spirit and everything that is great about this competition.

I feel as if the unclassy actions of Getzlaf and Boyle left me disgusted at the end of this game. Whatever commentator kept going on about how it was cheap, dirty, and late and I couldn’t deem it any of those. How do you not get thrown out of the game for something like what Boyle did? Getzlaf taunting Malkin up 4 goals in the last few minutes is terrible. I bet they won’t get away with this in Russia in 4 years.
The Golden Child has pretty much been a non-topic these olympics. But Milbury and McGuire still manage to make a Canada win all about Crosby.

That’s what I fear. They’re now going to say: “Ovi is a loser and Crosby is a winner since Crosby has a Stanley Cup and an Olympic medal and Ovi doesn’t have then.”
Except Canada has a better team this year. Many more NHL’ers. Russia had two good lines and a bunch of KHL’ers.
Plus, their coach is incompetent.

I think Milbury has gone way too far with the Euro trash comment plus the one yesterday calling the Germans fire hydrands. I wonder if NBC is going to do anything about it. What bothers me the most is that people like him will do that in front of a camera but don’t have the guts to do it to someone’s face.

What a pathetic “effort” by the Russians. The Russian Norv Turner should never coach again. I can only imagine what they could have done if they were headed by the Swiss coach instead.
The media is gonna have a field day with the fact that AO’s team has now completely laid down in consecutive elimination games against Crosby’s team. Ugh. Here’s to an angry Ovechkin after the break. Help us Sweden, you’re our only hope.

The Russians should hire Don Bylsma to coach their team in 2014. Much as I detest the Penguins, I must admit that Bylsma is a great coach.
The US will just have to defeat Canada for the gold themselves. They obviously could not depend on the Russians. I’m not sure I can depend on any other team to do that “dirty” job.
