Who Makes Whom Good in Washington?
Tip of the hat to the Rink's Sverige insider Ice Warrior for finding and translating this great article from the Swedish Expressen website. In this interview, Nicklas Backstrom's former coach Leif Boork reveals that he knew all along that Nicky was destined for great things, and perhaps is the power behind the throne in Washington?
The Secret of Bäckström According to Leif Boork
"The future captain of Brynäs is Nicklas Bäckström-- he's the symbol for the new and more ambitious Brynäs". I wrote that in my diary February 27th of 2006 when I coached the club, and a few days later on the 5th of March, after a personal conversation with Nicklas, I followed that up with these words: "Nicklas will be greater than what most people think, even greater than what his parents believe." Here's the secret of how Nicklas Bäckström become the point leader for Tre Kronor.
It was sporting director Michael Sundlöv that gave me the inspiration to go with Nicklas for Brynäs' first team. As a Brynäsare to the core and with a good nose for talent and quality, he was the one that supported me in launching the then only 17-year old Valbo product onto the hierarchical first team squad.
We were rewarded quickly
And we soon became richly rewarded. Nicklas responded quickly to the increased confidence. He trained ambitiously, was challenging and competitive at the rink. Outside of the rink, he was happy, quiet and humble. It didn't take long before both the coaches and the other players discovered his wonderful split vision, delicate wrists and ability to find ways to solve tight game situations on the fly.
Affected by criticism
His only weak point was a lack of explosiveness in his skating. Even the national team trainers who coached him as a young junior national team and regional camps player were skeptical about whether he could take the final leap into the senior elite. Nicklas was concerned by the criticism, although he kept it to himself. In official contexts, he holds much of himself hidden. The interviews with him are never controversial. I was fascinated early on by his team spirit and his willingness to appreciate what made others good. Young Nicklas was actually a good mentor to the much older Mathias Månsson when they played together early on. Nicklas would tell Måsse when he did good things but did not hesitate to criticize him when he wasn't sharp and focused enough for his taste.
A wonderful team spirit
I along with many others thoroughly enjoyed his straight forwardness coupled with his own self-criticism. Even when he played, on the bench he had opinions on both me and the game. No effort was too great when it came to securing a win for the team, and when I as a coach see that the player makes sacrifices, he has also gained the right to have opinions on others, even the coach. It was here I saw the comparison with Peter Forsberg. It is incredibly fun to see them both together in the Olympics, at the highest international level, on different sides of their careers.
Nicklas' team spirit was also shown in his self-sacrificing defensive play and hard work in the not-very-glamorous game when the opponent has the puck. He is willing to take responsibility when the team is at risk. He is completely unafraid to lose. Nicklas sees opportunities and solutions when other players leave the responsibility to others. When a gifted player, that to some degree has it easy for himself, shows those characteristics my heart as a coach bleeds. And so does my human heart.
Who makes whom good in Washington?
On the 15th of May 2006 at the Skonto arena in Riga, Nicklas Bäckström became the youngest player in Tre Kronor history to make his debut at the World Championships, in a game against Russia (3-3). And he was followed closely in the statistics by whom? Yes, that's right- Peter Forsberg. As the Brynäs coach I followed him closely. Nicklas played for 18 minutes and 9 seconds, had 21 shifts and 2 shots on goal.
Following his first shift of the second period, which lasted 64 seconds, I noted the following: "Held on good to Ovechkin at the face off then put him down without taking a penalty, after that won a fight along the boards in the right corner of the attacking zone".
Nicklas won his first duel against Ovechkin. And I think to myself "who makes whom good in Washington?".
He is as good as Zetterberg
In Finland, I saw a more mature and more international player in Nicklas Bäckström. More mature in its authority and natural charisma. International in its improved skating and his improved shooting. In the Olympics Nicklas has shown that he now can create oceans of time with the puck as a leading player in the highest international competition.
Nicklas Bäckström is as good as his childhood idol Henrik Zetterberg.
I can safely say that Nicky is a world class player today. Before his career is over, we will find him among our best players of all time.

Hometown, Swede bias? Too strong? Probably not.

Who makes whom good in Washngton? Bluntly, I think you’ll find that it’s a bit of both. Those two feed off of each other.
No Alex, no ratings. Know Alex, know ratings.
They both compliment and propel one another, no doubt.
If they question was “which player of the two makes whoever they play with better,” the answer is Backstrom. Couple years ago at the WHC, he made a major threat out of a line with Hornqvist (before he found his NHL scoring touch) and Warg.. not really elite players at the time.
My ability to post is only surpassed by my ability to pinch pennies.
I think, in many ways, the “magic” we see is nothing more than having two of the finest players in hockey on the ice together for 20 minutes a game. As individuals, they’re both super talented. Together, they’re just scary good.
Ovechkin is, frankly, more fun to watch (because he’s such a character) but some of things Backstrom does with the puck make my jaw drop. He has truly incredible hands, and he plays with a maturity that belies his age.
Who makes who better? To me they’re like Jari Kurri and Wayne Gretzky. Individually, they were both outstanding, hall of fame worthy players, but their best years as individuals were the years they played together. If Ovie and Backs share a long career in D.C., they’re going to put up some crazy numbers.
I am a hockey fan first, and a Caps fan second.

This is actually why I absolutely LOVE Backstrom. His awesomeness is much more subtle than Ovechkin’s, and even a few years into his NHL career still seems to take opponents by surprise.
Every time Nicky scores a goal, an angel gets its wings.

Yes, they are the perfect foil for each other.
(Yes, I know about the avatar hounding - just pretend mine is invisible.)
Not to mention he is the calm at the center (sorry) of the maelstrom that forms when Coach Boudreau’s offensive system meets Hurricane Ovechkin. With the 360 degree ice vision and a perfect saucer pass.
Now helping to keep an eye on all things Gr8 at Alex Ovetjkin.
AO still remembers that hit, BTW, though Nicky claims innocence.

Is that a bad thing if Russia and Sweden meet in the Olympics?
No Alex, no ratings. Know Alex, know ratings.
D’ya remember when Nicky scored a nasty goal at the VC and AO skated over and submarined him?
Yeah.

Why compare left wing Ovi with a Canadian Center who shoots from the right wing? Seems like people should be comparing Backstrom with said center. In the Olympics it would seem Ovi’s numbers are too good comparatively anyway.
Backstrom’s a center whose numbers are closer and he is playing on a less talented team.

I saw Mathias Månsson and immediately thought “Swedish Marilyn Manson”
Everyone wants to kill the king. But the prince, he just sails along telling all the ladies, "One day I'm gonna be king."
For the Caps,
Backstrom’s been fine without Ovechkin. Whereas Ovechkin without Backstrom has been [no data found].

Who are the best Swedes to ever play in the NHL?
Mats Sundin
Nicklas Lidstrom
Daniel Alfredsson
Peter Forsberg
Thomas Steen
Borje Salmung
Henrik Zetterberg
Different positions, I realize, but as good as Backstrom is, I don’t think he’s a good a player as Lidstrom.
Daniel Alfredsson and Mats Sundin were/are amazing players, but had to play through some of the worst offensive years in the NHL. I think if Backstrom ends up with something close to their careers, he would be in very, very good company.
Well Nicky is getting the Sundin stamp of approval, and playing in the Games with four of the other six men on that list. That’s a lot of hockey heritage right there. No wonder he doesn’t have time for Ovi.
Now helping to keep an eye on all things Gr8 at Alex Ovetjkin.
Lidstrom has also been in the league for ~20 years?
Backis is a baby, give him time and we’ll see where he stacks up. The kid is amazing.
we're not gonna allow someone like Downie to go after him.
Sure, but when Lidstrom finishes his career, he’s going to be a top-10 defenseman of all time. He’s an amazing, amazing player. As good as Backstrom is, I just don’t see him as being at that level.
And I hate the Red Wings with a passion. God, how I hate them.
Lidstrom is an absurd bar for anyone, so it doesn’t even matter to me. Saying top-10 is even selling him short. Anyone that has him out of the top 5 is either a Canadian homer or a Canadiens homer.
Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.
1) Orr — No questions asked
2/3) Harvey/Lidstrom in my opinion. I don’t have a good order, but I damn sure can’t come up with anyone else to put over those two.

It’s not easy for a gifted center to make those around him better, particularly if his wingers are superstars. Just look at what’s going on with Team Canada. The coaches have put just about every player on Crosby’s winger and they’re getting zip in results. Then again…
Crosby has 5 points in 3 games. That’s zip results to you?
Backstrom has the same and Ovechkin has only 4. ONLY 4! Cut the guy! Get him off team Russia! Send him down to Hershey!
By ‘zip in results,’ I think Bobby Orr 4 meant wins, and not the throw aways vs. Belarus.
No one’s saying 87’s a bum here, just that the magik of team.ca development camp has not shown itself when it counts…yet. Frankly, I think they should hoist Jornton out of the 1C and move him between Iginla and Nash, and move Crosby up between Marleau and Heatley. But I want to see team.ca flop on its arrogant face, so I’m good with Sid hanging out with Thunder Bay.

Why would Thornton deserve that? He hasn’t even been that good with the guys he knows, why give him a bigger role? Crosby has definitely played better than Thornton. I’ve just about given up on Joe ever turning it around in crunch time.

Thornton seems like he needs a kick in the ass…maybe taking him out of his HTML comfort zone is what he could use. Agreed, though…he’s a folder when it’s time for all in.

Before you begin the rabid defense of Crosby, you might want to actually read my comment. What I said was that Team Canada has got zip results from the wingers playing with Crosby. Nowhere did I say Crosby hasn’t had results. And before you point to Iginla’s hat trick-that was against Norway. He’s done nothing since that game.
He’s been pulled off of Crosby’s line, I think.
I think the reason Crosby doesn’t have better numbers is that Rick Nash has yet to get a goal. I think — other than the obvious early goal that he deflected in against the US — Crosby’s been Canada’s best forward.

Interesting stat I just found
Backstrom is second in the Olympics with a 71.05% faceoff rate (although I’m not sure of the sample size).

I said last year that Backis will win a Selke before this is all over, and his play this year have just made me that much more confident. He is a phenomenal two-way player, and his responsibility and quickness in the defensive zone are a big reason why OV leads the league in +/-.
That said, watching Backstrom develop his goal-scoring touch this year has been a pleasure. You could almost see exactly when it happened – he was slumping early in the year, and then came one game (I believe it was a loss in Ottawa), where it was obvious coach had told him he finally needed to shoot more often. Since that game, he’s been on a tear, and clearly looking to shoot just as often as he looks for the pass. Since OV’s started to look for the pass as well recently, Knuble’s been finding himself in quite the enviable position with these guys.
Scary thing istht he's not even close to his peak yet
I'm not booing Stephon Heyer, he's trying hard. I'm booing the fact that Stephon Heyer plays for us.
