JP — Please put a spoiler alert for this on the front page.
I’m watching the game on tape delay because I’m on the west coast. This clip is about a period ahead of where I am. This problem applies to all olympic hockey games for those of us on the west coast.
I also can’t take part in the USA/Canada discussion for this reason. Sucks.

Not to pick on you, but your should watch live online. Assuming it’s not blocked of course.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
Hmm. Lo res, compressed, choppy, out of sync feed on my computer vs. waiting the three hours and watching it in HD…
Sorry, not close.

Have you tried watching it on NBCOlympics.com? Because the quality is fantastic.

Actually, USA/Canada and any game that’s not on NBC is live in all time zones…

I wish he could have gotten more of Jagr’s shoulder and less of his head. This is just going to make the “ovechkin is a headhunter” story a little bigger.
Hardly. His arm was tucked and he just rolled right over him. Anyone who thinks that was dirty needs to switch To curling.
Just trying to capture the spirit of the thing...

oh, I 100% agree, but stupid people looking for excuses to bring ovechkin down will just point at this one and say “oh its a headshot” “oh oveckin left his feet”
Or this little gem from puckdaddy’s game chat

it was a borderline hit…if this was the nfl and jagr was the qb…that’s a 15 yard penalty for a shot to the hit "
I am just anticipating another wave of “ovechkin is dirty” talk.

Or they can read the linked Blog column by Damien Cox:
Ovechkin’s left shoulder caught the 38-year-old Jagr squarely in the chest/neck area, driving the veteran star backwards onto the ice.

I wonder if they heard the cheers from all the CAPs fan here in DC. Thank you, Alex!

you could probably hear me shouting for joy down here in Charleston! The whole bar wanted to know what all the ruckus was about. And then I promptly converted them all into Ovie fans.

Ridiculous hit. Among my favorites of all time now. Poetic that it was on Jagr.
Because now I can justify browsing and commenting during the work day with the argument that I am promoting my business.
First there was “The Goal.”
Now, “The Hit”?

I’m guessing the irony’s not lost on Ted.
For a second, I actually worried that Jags’ head bounced off the ice. Then I laughed.

For a second I worried that AO didn’t land that beauty on Jagr.

I wish I could rec this 5 times. So good, couldn’t have happened to a better player.

That’s why Jagr shouldn’t return to the NHL… a 28 year old Jagr probably bounces off that hit. A 38-year old Jagr?… a VW bug against a Mack truck.
If you've read this far...seek help.
A 28 year old Jagr sees that hit coming and isn’t vulnerable like that.

not sure about that. Ovi created a nasty angle pretty quickly on the real time replay.
Driving under the influence of hockey since godknow's when.
He did, and Jagr wasn’t floating with his head down, but I just can’t see him getting caught that cleanly when he was younger. He’s thicker now, and can still take a lot of force, he’s just not as shifty at speed as he used to be.

Meh, Jags is lucky. If this were the NHL regs, Ovi would have just left his feet.
Driving under the influence of hockey since godknow's when.
A younger Jagr
Might have been more agile and would have gone knee to knee trying to avoid the check while Ovi gets labeled as cheap.
Obstreperously Avatarless
I’m surprised the universe didn’t implode after THE HIT.
It was like watching a younger version of Jagr hit himself in the future or something.
"We have a Malkin and an Ovechkin, so it's hard not to talk about 'The Show,' but I agree with you, I like to think our team is here to do a job and play well and play in harmony and find that fine balance among ourselves and within our lineup."

And let’s don’t forget the goal the Russians scored as a result of that hit. Semin makes a pass to Malkin who -— puts it in.
Very good day for Malkin. And nice goal at the end by Datsyuk to ice it!
Former Cap Kozlov also scores.
Rocking the Red since 1975
That’s my favorite part — not that it was a great hit, or that Jagr was the victim, but that it served a purpose in the game and made a positive difference for his team.

Rocking the Red since 1975
Anyone else notice when Milbury and Roenick were asked “who is better Ovechkin or Crosby”… Roenick went with Crosby and explained why. Milbury kept dancing around the topic and kept saying Ovechkin, from a GM standpoint, would be great for a ticket selling point… but wouldn’t come out and say who he thought. Almost like he knew if he said Crosby, he’d be bashed for being biased.. and if he said Ovechkin, he knew he’d be bashed for saying it just because he felt like he had it.
Poor guy. He’s forever screwed now.
Wow, NBC’s airing hockey right now! Shocker.

Was it as good for you as it was for Russia?
Now helping to keep an eye on all things Gr8 at Alex Ovetjkin.
Another nice description from the same article:
So there was Jagr, dangling in the neutral zone, while Ovechkin lined him up. As Jagr started to shift from his backhand to his forehand, glancing down to keep his eye on the puck, the Russian barreled into him, cleanly, and sent him sprawling. The impact of the blow broke Jagr’s visor. This was not merely a hockey check. Ovechkin had wallpapered Jagr. Ovechkin had vaporized him.

’cause now I have to change my name to “JJ meet Alex”.

every four years Alex anihilates one of the guys I love to hate in the NHL, 4 years ago it was Chelios, now it’s our good friend Jaromir.
I smell a rejected hockey card! Hopefully all the good quality feeds on YouTube won’t be taken off before I get home tonight.
Anybody want to do a solid and pull a couple down would be GREATLY appreciated.

But I’m wondering, is there any A.O. love in Pittsburgh and New York over the hit???

Most amazing part about that hit, look at his body position nearly parallel to the ice and then realize this is so routine to him he just puts one foot down and skates away.

Jagr’s post game comment’s were great about “The Hit” too
“Of course I saw him. I wanted to make a play. It was just a bad turnover – a bad mistake. The hit doesn’t hurt. The mistake hurts because they scored a goal on that play. It’s a bad feeling. But I have to come back….[NHL Columnist John Dellapina- Do you still admire him after that hit?]…No question about it. That’s why he’s great. It was my mistake. I tried to do too much. I didn’t see anybody to pass the puck to and I didn’t want to dump it in.”
Classy guy that Jagr…
still dislike him for his non-existant play in DC but oh well.

I also love that in the game they went back and I believe it was JRoenick that calls out Semin for making a brilliant play and pass.
That’s a good Sasha.

I agree, he got leveled but knows it was a good hit but didn’t call it dirty. He also continued to battle back after that and you have to respect that despite his resume with the caps.

This hit...
…made my Olympics.
The only thing that sucked was that Ovechkin doesn’t get an assist on the play. (Well, ok, that Malkin scored the goal wasn’t exactly what I would have wanted either…)
Oh and Sid…you’re next.
Let's go Caps!
A sign from the hockey gods.
And with that center ice collision, thunderous and destructive, the fate of the Washington Capitals franchise began to shift . . .

"On the ice you don't have friends...only your teammates.
You play right now for your country and it doesn’t matter who you play against."
It crossed my mind, could you imagine Ovie leveling Backy in a Russia-Sweden match with this much force? Shudder
And yet … somehow I don’t feel like I have a right to this avatar, being a relative newcomer to the sport. I know what it means to you guys and I appreciate it for the hit in and of itself, but I wasn’t there and I don’t harbor the same level of hate for Jagr. It’s still an incredible shot, tho, and deserves to be an avatar for someone.
