I am stunned that Bykov went to Ovi three times in the shootout. I don’t even like him to be out there ONCE for the Caps in the SO.

Completely. I didn’t watch the game, but when i saw the score this morning I said to myself, “please tell me that they didn’t go to Ovi multiple times, not when they have Datsyuk, Semin, and Kozlov.” Sure enough… SIGH.
I have a C on my heart.
At least he scored one of them. =\ I don’t know how you’re the coach of that team and don’t play Datsyuk from the 4th round on. He has more moves than a bowl of jello in an earthquake.

I thought the same thing watching the game early on.
The Russian staff did not adequately scout their own NHL talent. Even prior to the shootout (which I’d fallen asleep long before) they had Ovechkin on the PK, they were juggling personnel all over the place on the PP – not playing to the strength of the players on the ice. And fundamental setups/set plays were the exception in favor of pure creativity. Maybe that changed in the 3rd when I was asleep, but the final score would tend to indicate not.
The power play is not going to get any better if they don’t solidify a #1 unit – whoever it is is secondary – and stick with it.
I hear Fiddler’s good at roofing them

Lousy rule, but I guess in theory it can end the shootout sooner if you can keep going back to the guy who scores more often than not.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
Per Slava’s blog post (<— over in “What We’re Reading”), Coach VB gave it to AO “because he worked the hardest”.
Fine if you’re awarding charity PP time late in a 6-2 game, not so good if you want to win a shootout with a really really good goalie.
I wonder if there was the Crosby did it/hero factor as well.
I think Babcock will be able to adjust his game plan more readily than Coach Bykov will.
Now helping to keep an eye on all things Gr8 at Alex Ovetjkin.
It’s been said elsewhere in here already, but it’s obvious the Russian coach is coaching with a little bit of politics and is getting outcoached as a result. Given Ovechkin’s shootout record, it’s questionable whether he should have even been in the first three, superstar or not.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
First three? Absolutely. There is no shooter, regardless of the situation, that goalies are afraid of more.
Repeat shooter? Probably not. I’d perhaps throw him out a second time if Dats/Semin get stoned more than once, but probably not three in a row, or two in a row, however many it was.

Which makes me wonder why so many guys tried to deke. It’s like they didn’t even watch the CAN/SUI SO. The ice was too crappy to get off a solid deke so everyone should have been thinking shot. AO out-smarted himself.

Ok, maybe I was a little overboard. On the other hand, if the coach was letting him continue to shoot because he asked, Ovechkin needs to shoulder some blame as well, because I’m pretty sure he knows his shootout record.

Here’s the problem… using Ovechkin to the exclusion of others isn’t only evidence of not having done one’s homework (that Ovechkin is iffy in the skills competition), but in NOT seeing other players in that situation in this venue, what knowledge does Bykov take forward in the event there is another shootout down the road? Or is he going to go to Ovechkin three more times?
He played 60 minutes as if he was evaluating his roster (it’s the only reason I can see for so much time for the third and fourth lines), then with all that skill on his bench that he could evaluate, he took the easy (and ultimately dumb) way out in the Gimmick.
If you've read this far...seek help.

I can only assume the coach kept sending Ovie out because he potted the first one, but you would think Bykov would be more aware of Ovie’s extreme lack of SO success.
(Yes, I know about the avatar hounding - just pretend mine is invisible.)
Bykov should know: Ovie is best in regulation play when he’s one-on-one with the D man and the goalie has to play 2 shots… First, where will the D man bounce after Ovie lays out some physics on him and then secondly, where will Ovie shoot the puck? He’s the best at using the D as a screen, obviously. I love how he actually steers closer to the D to jam the defender and to create the screen. Ovie doesn’t have the advantage of a D man to use against the goalie in the gimmick.
"More Gary Thorne, please."
AO likes to react and do things on the fly. SOs are a little too much thinking for him.
Now helping to keep an eye on all things Gr8 at Alex Ovetjkin.
it’s surprising to me how bad Ovie is on a shoot out considering how good he seems to be on the break away. Maybe his breakaway numbers are about the same just that an missed shoot-out attempt is so much more important than a missed break away attempt.
Breakaway and shootout are two completely different animals.
"Where can you go from there? Where? ... Nowhere. Exactly. What we do is, if we need that extra push over the cliff, you know what we do?"

Understood, conceptually they seem the same, however, it’s one on one with the goalie, usually. You’d think it would be easier on the break away because of backchecking support.
Well, the goalie is mentally set up for a shootout. When a breakaway happens usually it’s the goalie looks up and there’s nobody between him and the shooter and he goes OHSHI and comes out to challenge.
No Alex, no ratings. Know Alex, know ratings.
That’s a pretty important distinction there.
Also, I’ve noticed that Ovechkin’s pattern in the shootout is to go to the same move again and again. It’s part of why he’s been stripped of the puck so often this season when he tries to do the fancy pass-around/through move: everyone’s seen it, everyone knows what’s coming, they’ve watched the tape a million times, and they know how to defend it.
One of his shots, he apparently left the puck behind, too… that is not the way to score in the shootout…
I need a snappy signature...

Remember when he’s ‘trying out’ for a job in Mexico, and the guy wants him to shoot a can in the middle of the street? He misses, just standing there, and then he says “can I move?”. On the run, he makes that can dance.
The gimmick is denatured hockey and I’m not at all surprised that Ovechkin struggles with it.

y'all may be getting tired of this
But in an effort to keep you informed:
1) Reports from TSN hockey guru Darren Dreger out there that the Bruins have something cooking with a defenseman that should be announced after the Olympics are completed.
Two different NHL sources have confirmed that the B’s are indeed zeroing in on a defenseman, and one source further indicated that 27-year-old Nashville Predators defenseman Dan Hamhuis could be Boston GM Peter Chiarelli’s main target.
Aaron Ward hadn’t heard anything about a potential trade when CSNNE.com contacted the Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Wednesday night, but that "there’s a list of places" he may be headed before the March 3 NHL trade deadline.
Hamhuis is headed for unrestricted free agency and would be looking at a pretty healthy payday after finishing with 23 assists in each of the last seasons. The solid defenseman has averaged 22 minutes per game over the course of his six seasons in the NHL, and would immediately help Boston’s D-man crew. The blueliner currently holds a $2 million cap hit for this season, and a pro-rated portion of that deal wouldn’t be a difficult fit under Boston’s crowded cap situation.
The sticking point right now appears to be Nashville’s asking price for a rental defenseman. It may be that Chiarelli is looking into other possibilities like Ryan Whitney and Dennis Grebeshkov as younger alternatives that could be part of the team’s plan next year and beyond.

I’d prefer they take Flash. Fehr still has a lot of upside, has been improving over the last season and a half, plays a role that we are in short supply of, and doesn’t play the kind of game that is susceptible of disappearing acts during the playoffs. Plus, Flash has higher trade value so we’d have to throw in less on top if we trade Flash than if we trade Fehr.

If the Predators part with Hamhuis I’m guessing they might want a scoring forward in return, which the Bruins don’t have to part with unless you can’t the overpaid Michael Ryder, whose $4 million per season salary would likely be too expensive for the cost-conscious Predators. The Ducks might not yet be sellers at the deadline and I suspect the Oilers would prefer to retain Grebeshkov, preferring to shop a veteran like Steve Staios instead or the more expensive Sheldon Souray or Lubomir Visnovsky, whose salaries are likely too rich for the Bruins. Ward was rumored to be among those in the Bruins sights and he’d likely welcome a return to Boston where he was a good fit and a fan favorite but became a cap casualty last summer in a cost-cutting trade by the Bruins.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I'd have to agree
The Bruins look like the Pens—nothing to return, really. Ryder would fit OK but his salary is way huge for his production.
Thanks, though, hadn’t seen that yet.

So does McPhee, hence the comment. When Clark got traded, we got about an hour or warning before the deal was announced finalized, which means that not a word was breathed to anyone until the paperwork was shipped to the league.
Which makes a deal that catches everyone by surprise even more likely.

I think after yesterday’s games.. it’s safe to say that all my tournament predictions mean nothing. I expected USA and Canada to be the powerhouses to mop the floor with everyone else and USA to struggle…. Then..
Russia loses to Slovakia WITHOUT anyone with a first name of “Marian” even scoring a goal? Canada struggles against….. Switzerland???? And of all the games… USA blows out Norway.
It’s a bizarro world we live in today my friends.
I’m done trying to act like I know who’s going to win in the tourneys. Time for me to sit back and just enjoy
Of course… of all the “underdogs” I guess Slovakia was the least surprising to put up a fight…. but you’d just figure that if they were to pull an upset, Hossa or Gaborik would have been the key players in that upset

So Zidlicky is an interesting proposition.
MZ’s Qual/Comp of .047 would place second on the Caps, behind only Tom Poti
MZ’s Qual/Teammate of -0.117 would place ahead of only John Carlson so he’s not getting much help…
MZ’s Goals For/60 of 2.54 would be dead last on the Caps (not surprising considering Minnesota has scored 76 fewer goals than the caps
MZ’s Goals Against/60 of 2.42 would be 6th on the caps, below only Mike Green, ShaMo and Alzner.
MZ’s +/-/ON 60 of .12 would be higher than only Sloan and Alzner
MZ’s +/- OFF 60 is -0.4 which would be the lowest number on the caps
Because now I can justify browsing and commenting during the work day with the argument that I am promoting my business.

Finally, per the HHoF, on this date back in 1982, “Washington beat Montreal 3-1 to end the Canadiens’ 34 game unbeaten streak against the Caps. Washington had been 0-32-2 against Montreal since entering the NHL in October 1974.”
According to the Caps Media Guide, the game was played on February 19, 1980 (not 1982; the Caps didn’t play a game on 2/19/82).
Up until then, the Canadiens (again, according to the Caps Media Guide) were 31-2-0 against the Caps and outscored them by 197-56 in the 33 games. Montreal scored 10 or more goals five times and shutout the Caps ten times in that run.

Listening to Pierre Maguire this morning on XM, he said that if Canada doesn’t win the gold, the prime reason will be their powerplay which has been substandard so far. Hmm… Somewhere in the Carribean, a certain Mike Green has to have a little smile on his face, particularly if he watched Dan Boyle shank a slap shot wide of the net in the last two minutes of regulation that he knows he could have buried.

that PP, except for Boyle hasn’t been that bad. They’ve only had one tactic, though, and that will hurt them. T/M/H cycle it around for a while till Weber gets open, repeat process. It works fine if you screen the goalie, but teams figure it out after a while.

After Two Games Into Round Robin Play ...
Russia goalie Ilya Bryzgalov of the Phoenix Coyotes said the upset validated his belief that the gold medal is hardly exclusive to the hockey tournament favorites.
“Why is everybody always talking about Russia and Canada in the final? Guys, you’re too rushed,” he said to the media. “There are too many good teams out there. Be careful with your predictions.”
Well put Bryz. And I think that really, really makes me excited for the state of Olympic ice hockey play and in particular this tournament. So much unknown. So many factors.
Aware that there’s plenty of hockey to played in Round Robin, I’m still going to throw this out there. Which team is best capable (in terms of personnel and the execution they’ve demonstrated so far in their play) of adapting to multiple styles of play and tactics.
Some quick and uncohesive thoughts/observations on last night’s Russian/Slovakian tilt:
-Russia, we know, is an offensive dynamo waiting to explode backstopped by a pair of stellar goalies. Aside from Volchenkov, their D is hardly anything that would qualify as defensive minded. With that said, their MO seems to be an attacking offense that hopes to force the tempo of them game on their opponents and put them on their heels constantly.
-Slovakia on the other hand, while possessing world class offensive talent in their own right, just cannot consistently pass and stickhandle their way with the same kind of flair that Russia does. They’re more the counter attack kind of team and when they go on the offensive it’s the straight, crisp, short and high percentage passes that advance the puck into Russia’s defensive zone. Patience and opportunism is their MO.

To further that, the Swiss played the Canadians tough, chippy, and relentlessly forechecked – I thought that despite the shot disparity, Canada was playing into the Swiss’ hands.
I wasn’t the only one waiting for Semin to flip a blind backhand for a Hossa breakaway, was I?

I had dreams a miracle occurred and GMGM somehow acquired him in a steal of a trade, with Volchenkov taking a pay cut to play on a legit Stanley Cup contender.

Um, no. AV’s stock is on the rise, and caps aren’t the only cup contenders. He’s prolly more valuable to a club that is trying to structure with a game or seven against the Capitals in mind.

Calle
One of the nicest players I’ve ever met. I ran into him at the team store a few years ago.. he still looked like he could play. We chatted about the 1998 finals and how the Caps really didn’t have a chance in that series (Detroit was loaded with Hall of Famers, the Caps had none…)
Wonder what he thinks of Magnus Johansson wearing #6. It’s freaky to me to see someone name Johansson wearing #6 and it not be Calle.

Has it been mentioned that the reason for the flaming sheep on Ovie's skates is that
“Ovechka” is “sheep” in russian and Ovie was often teased because of this when he was little?
Watched the game with a russian last night and he enlightened me of this.
Also, let me be probably the 50th person in this thread to awe @ Ovechkin’s six or seven bone crushing hits last night.
Unfortunately for Russia, looks so far that the wrong Semin came to Vancouver. But, as we know, he can get hot and morph into the most talented player on the ice at any time. There isn’t a more mercurial player in sports right now for my money.
he had some nice moves last night, a couple times. And the bad ice conditions are not good for Semin’s game that depends on puck control.
Now helping to keep an eye on all things Gr8 at Alex Ovetjkin.
semin was miserable. he couldn’t control the puck, and when he did he was trying to pass from one side of the ice to the other with predictable results. he was sabotaging the AO-datsyuk line last night.

by mechanicsville on Feb 19, 2010 5:34 PM EST up reply actions
agreed.
I thought I would be frustrated by seeing him play better for Russia, or happy to see him play the same for them as he often does for us (uneven).
I find I’m more frustrated to see him play uneven because you know there’s nothing being lost in translation over there – not that many were looking for that straw to hang onto in DC perhaps
Well, the sheep isn’t flaming ;) but it is gap-toothed, and yes, you can find the discussion in the fanshot posted by kellobellow.

what the heck is up with this?
Alex Ovechkin annoys announcers
Woke up this morning to find the Russia-Slovakia game being replayed on one of the many Canadian Olympic channels so I tried to catch a little as I got ready for another day.
During the game, Alex Ovechkin apparently broke a stick and went to the bench to replace it. He didn’t like the sticks that were brought out so he went behind the bench to look for a new stick himself. The Canadian announcers were not pleased.
“I can’t believe they are letting him get away with this,” said one.
“The rules don’t apply to him,” said another.
Ouch. Canada, is of course, Sidney Crosby country, and the nation’s hockey fanatics have set up this Olympic tournament as Ovechkin vs. Crosby. There is respect for Ovechkin but not a lot of affection. A meeting between the two teams will be very interesting.

It was a 1-0 game until the 3rd, then it was a 1-1 game. More scoring = less dead air for announcers to fill.
Now helping to keep an eye on all things Gr8 at Alex Ovetjkin.
Is there a rule that says a player can’t go behind the bench?
Whine, whine, whine. Would youlike some cheese with that?
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
He also was clearly having skate issues so I’m not even positive he was back there because of anything related to his sticks. He had different pairs of skates on.
Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.
From what I saw he grabbed a different stick from the wall. But he certainly was having a variety of equipment problems.
(Yes, I know about the avatar hounding - just pretend mine is invisible.)
Last night I understood it to mean the Russian coaching staff letting him on the PP.
He had one fire skate on, one regular (old) skate on, had decided to go back to… I’d thought get the other matching old skate, but maybe he needed a new stick and knew if he said he needed one someone else would have jumped on the ice for the PP.
They followed up again more clearly expressing a reference to the coaching staff letting Ovi play when he wants to play. Rather, I took it as a follow up reference, but it may be I was hearing it wrong as I did finally fall asleep in the 2nd intermission…
gold medal match
I understand it’s borderline ridiculous to speculate at this point, but in light of the link posted above, I don’t understand why it can’t be Russia/Canada in the final.
Canada’s goal differential will almost certainly carry them into the 1st spot with a win against the USA, or the 4th spot with a loss. Those are, essentially, the same. If Russia wins their last game against the Czech, they will be in first in their own group, and in the 2D/3D spot (again, doesn’t matter), preserving the opportunity. If and only if they come in second in their group with a loss… only then will mitigating factors such as Sweden or Finland come into play. Unless I’m looking at things incorrectly.
If Sweeden wins in regulation on Sunday, they’ll have more points than Canada. As of now Sweeden has 6 points for 2 regulation wins, and Canada got 3 for the regulation win and 2 for the shootout win.
Because now I can justify browsing and commenting during the work day with the argument that I am promoting my business.
by Sombrero Guy on Feb 19, 2010 5:19 PM EST up reply actions
Very true, thanks for clearing up my misconception. I guess the idea, then, is that the USA must win in overtime to preserve Canada getting the 4D spot or something like that. Ridiculous.
And the thought of Russia possibly losing to both the Czechs and the Slovaks just made my brain melt a little.

hey all, checking in from vacation with some hockey-related content!
Charlotte is lovely if utterly boring. But it’s also semi-warm, the sun is shining, and THERE IS NO SNOW! But other than that, it’s kinda dull. So to spice things up, the ECHL Charlotte Checkers hosted their first ever Midnight Hockey Madness Thursday.
BAAAAAAAAAD game for Charlotte: they gave up seven goals to Toledo, and were trying to execute a trap, but not very well. One Toledo player accounted for 5 of those goals, and Maxime Tanguay, little brother of Alex, had a good night racking up several assists. I’m sure there are diehard hockey fans in Charlotte, but, sadly, they didn’t appear to be at the game. Mostly it was drunks that knew little about hockey who wanted to see fights. And some asshole Rangers fan who picked the wrong girl to make snide remarks about the “Crapitals” to. Oh, and two fights in the stands. Oh, yes, bad minor league hockey at its finest! Ran into a couple of other people in Caps shirts, and a girl in a Hershey jersey.
Charlotte has a Mike Berube (born in 1988) on their roster, does anyone know if that’s Craig Berube’s kid? I can’t find anything. But that’s an unusual last name, the age seems right, and he was born in Canada. Anyway, he didn’t stand out as good or bad, but no one from Charlotte stood out, except the goalie and their designated goon.
So, tomorrow its off to Charleston for some “Think Pink” night fun with the Stingrays vs. Toledo. Pink ice, I’ll be sure to get pictures.
Kung-fu Rink Rabbit
On Draper having to wear a USA jersey at practice: "well at least the Wings can settle bets without involving gold plated desert eagles!"

Mike Berube
I can’t find any detailed bio information on him, and all I can find about Craig is that he was born in 1965 (so he’d have been 23 when Mike was born, if Mike is his son).
Both were born in Alberta… it’s possible, but I can’t confirm it from the resources I’ve found.

Could be a relative. Maybe Alberta is full of Berubes, like Lansing, MI is full of Millers.

On a WHL message board a poster said he had met Mike’s dad and that man wasn’t Craig.
From the Flyers Fun Facts page: ‘Craig Berube has a son named Nashota." Of course if he had a son with a boring name, then it wouldn’t be a fun fact.
