Very nice. Yes, I’ll be rooting for Russia in this one, even though it’s past my bedtime.

This is completely fine, and I encourage it. Everyone has different reasons that they pull for different teams in the Olympics, and I’m not going to tell anyone who to root for. I just can’t bring myself to root for Russia, even if their top players are Caps.

Yes. I liked his style. Very engaging and fun, but he missed a couple of jumps.
How the hell did Patrick Chan score so high, though?
No Alex, no ratings. Know Alex, know ratings.
to be fair (and I’m going by the full points-breakdown available on ctv.ca), apparently his base values/technical difficulty was higher to begin with, so that was in his favour.
and he was the best ranked skater – all six of the following guys will easily score higher than Patrick Chan.
This is why there’s a legitimate debate over whether it’s a sport. Costuming and characterization make it more of an art in my mind. An athletic art, but an art. Figure skating didn’t used to be like that, decades ago when you simply had to skate the figures. Of course, it wasn’t as interesting to watch, either.

If figure skating isn’t a sport, is gymnastics? You’re not required to do anything – you’re judged on how difficult your routine is, and how well you execute. Art in sport, if you ask me. As far as it pertains to the Olympics, it’s pretty perfect as well, because it’s non-conflict, with emphasis on beauty, skill, and form as opposed to brute strength, tenacity, and other things usually thought of as war attributes.

I’m USA all the way, as far as the Olympics go, and there’s a part of me that hopes the US never has to face Russia on it’s way to a gold medal, because the one thing I’ve realized watching these games is that I simply can’t help but root for Ovechkin…and Semin and Varly and Feds and Kozlov.
I have also learned that I have no problem root against the Canadian team, even though I have nothing against them. I was REALLY hoping to see the Swiss steal that one tonight—not because I’m a “Canada hater”, but because I’m rooting for the best chance at American advancement in this tournament (and a part of me wanted to see the Canadian media hit the panic button!).
So, to summarize, I’m a USA fan first and foremost…but love watching team Russia play and (as long as they’re not playing us), will continue to cheer for them as well.

My main reason to root for Russia is because of the Caps connection. Secondarily, I want them to be the team that eliminates team Canads from the tourney, so i can wallow in the sorrow of the Canadian hockey talking heads.

surprising, considering that in all of the skating stuff so far it’s been rare that a skater’s stayed on their feet through the whole thing
I haven’t really followed American figure skating, more Canadian. How does Evan compare to Johnny Weir and Jeremy Abbott?
Abbott had a hell of a time in his program, both of them. He fell twice in the freeskate. Have not seen Johnny Weir skate more than once; I like Lysacek’s style better, but they’re both good.

srsly. . .they need to go nuclear on these lines and reform them, imo
Still waiting for someone to draft Paul Newman. . .
I don’t know. Obviously I don’t think you break up Semin/OV, and Kovy/Afinogenov have previous chemistry… and ZZM has tons of proven experience together. It’s hard to go nuclear now.
Mix the KHLers and NHLers. Feds/Ovie/Semin?

Okay, who had Russia over Slovakia 1-0 heading into the third?

I got a ton today! It’s awesome when someone who you’ve followed finally follows you. It makes me feel so special.
"Welcome to Canada -– everything fun is always behind a fence."
Did you ever have a celebrity follow you? That’s uber rewarding! lol
I remember when Gavin DeGraw started following me. I was about to pee my pants! haha
Yea, I have a pretty badass handle, if it was last year…

My friends from Boston were in tears laughing at Unleash the Red. Of course they made me hate it even more. Now I laugh like a 12 year old when I see it/hear it
I hate the video this year, urg, needs more douchey music.

I’m serious, add some douche and it’ll get people even more excited.

once little girls worship you…you lose all your cred
Good Charlotte used to be awesome…then 12 year olds came to their shows and screeched like N’Sync was on stage. I stopped going (to GC shows…N’Sync on the other hand…)
I used to go see them when they were a local band in Annapolis…so when they went beyond mainstream into teeny bopper land, I gave up.
It would be funny if in the last 10 minutes, there were goals everywhere and we got a repeat of the Russia-Slovakia preliminary match in Turin where the Slovaks won 5-3. Well kind of.

They made Bryz cover up a bunch of stuff on his mask also. Closeup showed a bunch of “Vancouver” stickers.

eh… “semin’s play is not the same when there’s no bäckström”? due to a some time zone differences i haven’t see much caps game but they play in different lines too?

Puck over the glass a penalty
in international rules? Is that a new NHL inspired rule?
Obstreperously Avatarless
No, I don’t believe it is. In fact it may be the other way around. it’s a penalty in international play for a while. In the World Championships finals i ’08 Canada got a delay of game penalty in overtime and Kovalchuk converted on the subsequent power play.

USA and SWE must feel pretty good… both RUS/CAN have to go to OT against teams that many would’ve thought they’d win pretty easily over.
though slovakia is much better than some other teams in this tournament
I don't remember you looking any better. But then again, I don't remember you.
Who thought Russia would win easily? Last time they met Russia and Ovy and Malkin in the line-up and lost 5-3. Slovakia is a good team. I did think Russia would win in regulation, but I never thought it would be easy.

So much for waiting for an Ovie goal…made my white russian and i’m drinking it from a cup I got at the circus when I was three. It had a snowball in it. lol
I'm filling out an NFL Fan Faceoff survey

I can’t find the “What the hell do you think?” option

If every single Caps fan can tell you that Ovi shouldn’t keep taking shootouts, and you continue to play him, you suck. Semin has the sickest wrist shot in the league. Let it loose dammit!
Semin should’ve atleast gotten a shot.
Ovie the 3rd time was not a good choice, malkin was not so good either
Still waiting for someone to draft Paul Newman. . .
Why not Sasha! And now Russia is not gonna get a bye which might not be horrible.
Вперед, Россия! Дацюк, Семин, Овечкин = победа!

How is it one team gets to shoot twice in a row.
Happened earlier today and just now Dats ond Ovi shot back to back after the 3rd round. Had to rewind but indeed, there were two Russian shooters in a row.
Obstreperously Avatarless
Im pretty sure they snake it after the 3rd round.
Russia Slovakia, Slovakia Russia, Russia Slovakia, etc

i don’t know it just seems like they switch who shoots first after those 3 rounds

why would you use a shootout to determine a winner? it is yet another question we will never know the answer too

And
How could that happen twice in one day and the announcers never even mention it? Cause it’s NBC I know, but really?
Obstreperously Avatarless
Well, with all due respect, what did you want them to say? “Canada is shooting now, but the last three rounds they actually shot SECOND!”
It doesn’t require any explanation.
by sixsevenfiftysix on Feb 19, 2010 3:00 AM EST up reply actions
well at least they get 2 days off to fix that horrendous pp unit. as for the shootout they should be glad to get 1 goal out of ovi his strength is not shootouts/penalty shots all i kept thinking was do they want to win (i know they do but that decision is redic in my opinion) and bryz can only bail you out for so long until one gets by him

To coach Bykov, for using Ovie too much in the shootout.

What amazing date in history are we giong back to today, Mr. Peabody?
Alright
I’m out guys.
Thanks for letting me crash, CoyotesNation appreciates it.
Still upset about the loss a few weeks ago though :P
How ’bout that unstoppable Russian offense?

I think the Russia/Slovakia game will give heart to all Montreal fans everywhere if they draw the Caps as a playoff opponent. Halak was really looking good, stopping Semin, Ovi and company
But then again, I’m sure the Caps could figure out Halak in a 7 game series.
