to be fair (and I’m going by the full points-breakdown available on ctv.ca), apparently his base values/technical difficulty was higher to begin with, so that was in his favour.

and he was the best ranked skater – all six of the following guys will easily score higher than Patrick Chan.

by Vinn on Feb 18, 2010 11:15 PM EST up reply actions

yeah, I like those summer sports when they show you the difficulty scores/max possible for each routine

by Elliotte on Feb 18, 2010 11:22 PM EST up reply actions

This is why there’s a legitimate debate over whether it’s a sport. Costuming and characterization make it more of an art in my mind. An athletic art, but an art. Figure skating didn’t used to be like that, decades ago when you simply had to skate the figures. Of course, it wasn’t as interesting to watch, either.

"Camaraderie, that's what the Washington Capitals are all about."

by CapitalCentre on Feb 18, 2010 11:18 PM EST up reply actions

If figure skating isn’t a sport, is gymnastics? You’re not required to do anything – you’re judged on how difficult your routine is, and how well you execute. Art in sport, if you ask me. As far as it pertains to the Olympics, it’s pretty perfect as well, because it’s non-conflict, with emphasis on beauty, skill, and form as opposed to brute strength, tenacity, and other things usually thought of as war attributes.

Deutschland - das ist alles.

by Whiter Mage on Feb 18, 2010 11:37 PM EST up reply actions

I’m USA all the way, as far as the Olympics go, and there’s a part of me that hopes the US never has to face Russia on it’s way to a gold medal, because the one thing I’ve realized watching these games is that I simply can’t help but root for Ovechkin…and Semin and Varly and Feds and Kozlov.

I have also learned that I have no problem root against the Canadian team, even though I have nothing against them. I was REALLY hoping to see the Swiss steal that one tonight—not because I’m a “Canada hater”, but because I’m rooting for the best chance at American advancement in this tournament (and a part of me wanted to see the Canadian media hit the panic button!).

So, to summarize, I’m a USA fan first and foremost…but love watching team Russia play and (as long as they’re not playing us), will continue to cheer for them as well.

yeah, although I agree with the others that were a little worried this game might motivate the Canadians a little too much.

by Elliotte on Feb 18, 2010 11:13 PM EST up reply actions

My main reason to root for Russia is because of the Caps connection. Secondarily, I want them to be the team that eliminates team Canads from the tourney, so i can wallow in the sorrow of the Canadian hockey talking heads.

well at least they get 2 days off to fix that horrendous pp unit. as for the shootout they should be glad to get 1 goal out of ovi his strength is not shootouts/penalty shots all i kept thinking was do they want to win (i know they do but that decision is redic in my opinion) and bryz can only bail you out for so long until one gets by him

I think the Russia/Slovakia game will give heart to all Montreal fans everywhere if they draw the Caps as a playoff opponent. Halak was really looking good, stopping Semin, Ovi and company

But then again, I’m sure the Caps could figure out Halak in a 7 game series.

Do they somehow get bonus points for winning one of the games? Like winning by a blowout? Or winning so well that it counts as two wins?

That would be an amazing accomplishment — to drop Montreal in 3 games when it takes 4 games to win a series.

Evgeny Kuznetsov hams it up as he joins the Russia men's national team for the "Sweden Games" leg of the Euro Hockey Tour in Helsinki, Finland.

There's a bit of controversy as their game against the Finns is scheduled to be played in Helsinki's outdoor Olympic Stadium. Where the daytime temps are currently approximately minus-15 degrees Celsius, with periodic heavy snow.

This interview with head coach Zinetula Bilyaletdinov is fascinating, as he frets about the weather and especially when the reporters press him on the leaked reports that Kuznetsov will be centering the top line for Team Russia, just weeks after his 20th birthday.
