2010-11 STH renewal: Wow
So I just got my invoice for the 2010-11 season, and my eyes just about bugged out of my head. Sure, I expected my seat in 426 would go up next season. Heck, winning ain't cheap. What I wasn't expecting: a 137 percent increase! Either I can't do math, there's been an error, or the Caps finally realized that they could get a heck of a lot more out of me than the $12 per game I've been paying. Anyone else notice a similar skyrocketing?
Edit: It appears the increase is partly because the Caps have done away with the Mezzanine Goal Zone seating (where the Eagle's Nest used to be) for 2010-11.

Uh oh....
Hope that percentage doesn’t hold true to the lower level, I don’t think I can swing that if it does.

I think more than anything else, it’s a cost correction. They realized they weren’t asking enough for some seats and are fixing it going forward. I’ve heard from a few other STHers who noticed an increase, but nothing on the order of 137 percent. Let me know what you find out.

9% for 101
I can live with that.
The playoffs seats are pricier in the first round but not much different for later rounds.

Between 10 and 30 percent seems to be the prevailing amount, which does not strike me as unreasonable. More than double, however, from $523 this season to $1,244.50 next season, does.
I get it. The Caps identified an area where the margins weren’t big enough (granted: $12 bucks a game was/is a steal) and decided to correct the market. More power to them, that’s capitalism. They know and I know that if I balk and walk, someone else will gladly fill my seat. But let’s face it: 137 percent is not an increase; It’s a duplication. For that sort of treament, a guy might at least expect breakfast in the morning.

I see what they are doing with your seats (I guess that’s the old Eagle’s Nest). Instead of immediately bringing them to market, maybe they should have brought them halfway in between. Still would have been a huge increase, but understandable.

Look on the brightside. You got to see live Caps games for about the cost of a movie ticket :-)

Tolerable in 417
I’m going to be out approximately another $20 a month on PowerPay. I’m not going to be on a diet of ramen noodles or anything like that, but I’m starting to feel the pinch on these. These tickets do add up in a hurry.
Yea, I’m kind of amazed myself. I was expecting a small increase (In 07-08 I paid $16 a game, this year I paid $18 a game and next year they want $27 a game). I understand the team is doing well and prices are gonna go up because of it. However, when you don’t raise the gate prices, but raise STH prices it pisses me off.
I know everybody’s story is different and that it really doesn’t matter. But I found the customer service to be outstanding. Prices and benefits were fair and that’s why I became a STH. The Caps made a system that allowed me to become one. I’m 20, I became a STH at 18, worked part-time at Toys R Us to pay off my tickets, I’m also a full-time student. I made lousy money over the last two years ($8000 total), $1500 of that went to the Caps. Now I work at a golf course, and as you can imagine, I haven’t been working a lot lately (there’s two feet of snow on the ground). I would like to renew, but I just can’t, it’s impossible.
To top it all off, I’m not guaranteed playoff seats this year. I mean, I went to all the regular season games this year to miss out on the best part? That sucks the most and I think that “benefit” should be changed.
So, I guess it’s back to reality for me. I’ll make it to maybe 4 games now every year, unless I get a decent job after I get my associates. It sucks. But no matter what I say nothing is gonna change. So I guess I’m forced to go back to being a “non-loyal” fan, because I’m not a STH.

Get a benefactor.
Keep the tix and sell off the majority of them online in one chunk to somebody (I sold 30 of my seats in one chunk on CriagsList when money got tight and was able to still see 10 and then had money for the regular season). If you can find somebody to take them at face value you can probably watch your 10 for free.

I’m not excited about paying 30% more next year. It only ends up being like $25 more a month with the power pay, which is tolerable. And we have to remember, the caps are far from the most expensive ticket in the NHL

we saw an increase of $7/ticket/game. BUT, it looked like the rate we’re getting on this year’s playoffs is an absolute steal. So, its a trade off.

I just think it’s BS that I paid for all the home games through this season and now I can’t see the end of it because I’m not renewing next year.

re-new and re-sell. I bet you can sell half the tickets at cost very easily, possibly even above cost depending on the game

are you saying they wont let you buy playoff tickets now?? and before you answer did you get them for last year?? if so , i think they dont want you to get them for 2 years but only pay for one regular season..not sure…

I finally took a look at the playoff prices, and they’re way up from last year. First round is up $8 per ticket and second round is up $10. For me that’s over 40%. I won’t mind as long as I don’t have to pay for four tickets in every round.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
bingo! i calculated what two seats will max cost in 404 for the playoffs. a staggering $1104!!! thats half of the whole regular season.
Maybe we can plead w/ the boys to play some cut throat hockey and finish in 4-5 games on the reg.

yeah, well when you consider that you can sell round 2 games for about 150-200 dollars a ticket or possibly more, pending the opponent, you can sell a game each round and pretty much come out even…cant even imagine what a conference final or cup final ticket would go for…

I was a STH in 08-09. I thought i was moving out of the area over the summer last year so could not commit to 09-10 in February last year. They really hold you over a barrel to do this at this time of year (the renewal). Its almost like a timeshare. You cannot get out of it very easily. Quite frankly, they should really win a cup before they have a significant increase, IMO. Or at least win more than 1 series in 11 years. Yes, i love the team this year, but they made a HUGE mistake last year in not getting a “rental player” at the deadline. Im sure many of you die hards felt like i did in early March and were none too pleased and then only “hoped for the best” when the playoffs started. I just want to see a full committment to the whole 12 month process. Drafting? great job Star players?? great job Offseason additions (knuble) ?? great job…marketing?? great job…They need to realize that the contenders will go out and add those final pieces in 2 weeks. I just got the feeling that it was all about the regular season and filling those seats, and wanted to see a bigger committment at the deadline. Thats just me personally. Fans who are spending this kind of money should be allowed to wait til the season is over or at least may 1st to decide on what they want to do. I GET the business of the whole thing, but where else do you spend this kind of money on something and you have NO IDEA who will be on the team or what you will be getting next year? So yeah, i understand you have to expect a certain amount of uncertainty when you sign up, but this team has a very “heart-breaking” tradition and not a very successful track record in the playoffs still. I just wonder if there is another failure or first round upset if fans will feel the same way in a year or 2 about selling out this building every night. Clearly there are many bandwagon fans in the area right now. I personally would like to make sure Backstrom was locked up for 5-7 years before i made the committment. Anyway, overall Ted has done a great job with building the team but i still cannot help but wonder why nothing was done last year, and if something will be done THIS year. This team is , in its current state, beatable by a team who can play them each night and figure out how to stop them, and until they play better team defense. Lets hear from you guys, if the Caps were to lose to say the Lightning or the Bruins in the first round again, do you really feel the same about forking over this much money for ANOTHER season, with an INCREASE, just to start the whole process over again?? Going to a full season of games was pretty exhausting, even if it was fun. The metro SUCKED. And getting home at 11:30 on a Tuesday was kind of rough too..
Anyone understand where i am coming from or am i in the minority here?? I can take it :)

no i completely agree that its hard to justify this kind of money on a whim. Sure the team is playing great hockey (except those last three games) but upsets happen and yeah it’d be a real pisser too. But i will continue to buy my seats because i love the sport and our team. I’ll go and cheer every night.
and i agree the metro sucks. Its a scam to the fullest.
"the other day on sportscenter they said something along the lines of "the capitals score so much tiger woods is jealous" haha had me laughing hard while i was eating my cereal"
That was a LOT of different things you threw out there at once, covering a LOT of different areas… kind of a rant actually.
To answer all of that in a quick way: No, I’m not upset… I’m ecstatic.
I’ve paid for season tickets at high prices for the 101 section 6 years ago through when the SUCKED and I loved every minute of it. I wouldn’t trade my seats for anything.
BTW, I might recommend using the return key as that huge paragraph is really hard to wade through…

roger, and noted :) love the caps too but im out in fairfax. and my partner was my 9 year old son..very hard to swing a full season and the costs start to add up, but it is definitely a fun time.

one other point. future STH’s should be aware that just because the Caps increase their prices at a certain percentage or rate does NOT mean that the resale public is going to pay at the same rate, so your profit is going to go down. some games, yes but overall, you will either have to cut your cost to a very slim profit or even a loss on several games, or go to more games. And being a lifelong fan, you know it does not take much for fans to jump OFF the bandwagon. Hopefully not with Ovie and Backstrom and Green here, but i do still wonder…..

Funny, I was under the impression that the reason season tickets exist is so that fans can get (the same) good seats every time they go to a game, not as a profit making opportunity for ‘fans.’

i strictly sell my tickets to offset the cost of the tickets. I have yet to make a buck off a ticket that doesnt go right back into more tickets.

unfortunately, renstar, there are a TON of brokers who bought up ALOT of seats over the past few years. If those seats were sold entirely to INDIVIDUALS with a max cap of say 4 seats, there would be a much smaller waiting list. And like highslot said, i would sell a few games too, like 5-10 to offset the cost of going to the games. These brokers were paying 10 a game for seats up in the nosebleed and then reselling for 40 a game on average. They didnt give a crap about going. Plus i found SEVERAL peddling them on the pittsburgh craigslist and philly as well. That is NOT what they are supposed to be for, but there really is nothing you can do. So i am actually personally not that upset about them raising the prices up, especially at that end, because not too many people are going to pay 60 bucks a seat to sit in 426 P on a tuesday night. Maybe some of those guys will get out of the business and let real fans have the seats. They buy them, or have in the past, in like blocks of 8, 10, or more..
Anyway, if the product stays as good, and they have postseason success, i am all for Ted getting his money. He does do alot for the fans, and even though i have disagreed with him in the past on a few things, he at least lets you say what you want to say and he listens.
I am just real curious what will happen when the team “comes back down to earth” with a more normal winning percentage at home and people get bummed out when they dont win as much and think they dont want to spend so much to see them lose at home more regularly. Lets be honest, 3 reg losses in 29 home games??? You can NOT do much better than that…Sadly it can only go downhill from here , lol…. But i am definitely enjoying the ride so far.
Really just hope they get a couple strong defensemen and not be too afraid to give up a few players in hershey. NHL history is filled with guys in the minors with “promise”. If we lose some good players, i am sure with a winning tradition, it will be much easier to attract even MORE free agents, so i am not that worried about giving up a few big name Bears and a player or 2 on offense to get a more solid back line for the 2 month journey coming up in April.

Brokers you can’t do anything about. I dislike ’em as much as anyone. But I was not talking about brokers. I was talking about this:
future STH’s should be aware that … your profit is going to go down
Seriously? You can’t say you can’t discuss season tickets in terms of profits in one post, then go on to dis brokers in the next. You are selling your tickets at a profit, you are acting as a broker. I understand the desire to recoup money from games you can’t go to, but if you are selling 25-50% of your tickets because you can’t go, you shouldn’t be buying season tickets. If you are selling 25-50% of your tickets to pay for the other half, then you are just a broker who goes to games for free.
One solution is to only allow STH to transfer/resell a limited number of their tickets. If you are gonna buy em, use em. Otherwise, there are other people that would like to. That profit should be going to the team, not you. Ted isn’t getting his money, you (and other brokers) are. But this is not feasible because the physical tickets can’t be regulated, only the electronic tickets.
Now, I don’t really blame you, or highslot. I’d probably do the same myself, it just makes business sense. I’m just irritated at how difficult it is to get tickets at a reasonable price. There shouldn’t be such a blatant arbitrage. The only solution is to bring the STH per game price up to the face value, and the only way to do that is to drop the face value to a more reasonable number. Then there is less financial incentive to sell tickets at “face value” that were bought for essentially pennies on the dollar. The economics of Caps tickets are seriously fucked up, especially for people who only have the chance to go to one (or a few) games a year.

“There shouldn’t be such a blatant arbitrage. The only solution is to bring the STH per game price up to the face value, and the only way to do that is to drop the face value to a more reasonable number.”
Well you can also doing it by raising the STH price closer to the current face value, which is what they did. The problem you are talking about has been so obvious over the last two seasons that I knew this price hike was coming. It’s simple economics.
i have no choice but to sell them for face value on ticket exchange. I dont jack them up to 200-400 like some jerks in the lower bowl.

its a great deal still, but moreso if you live close by. when you are out in the suburbs, with food, parking, metro, and the travel time, it starts to really wear on you. but for a friday night or saturday, you just cant beat going to a Caps game for entertainment. They are a blast to watch and the atmosphere is awesome. God i hope this year does not end like last year. April and May are so CLOSE now and everyone has such high hopes…Nervous anyone????

lalalalala.
I don’t know what the new knife is gonna be in 109 and I don’t much care. I go to 30-35 games a year and my friends are increasingly willing to defray cost for the others (go figure). I thought about selling a 10-game package here at the Exchange, and I know “my” seats will be under some broker’s or lobbyist’s ass within a couple years. But as sure as Sergei Fedorov nearly deafened me last spring, the Caps are a hot ticket; naturally it’s going to burn a bit to hold on!
there will always be die hards like you, but i am still skeptical about what will happen in the next couple of years if we level off or regress at all. fans ran out the door en masse after jagr and the dismantling of the team, and with so many teams in the nhl struggling, i just hope that these new found fans actually stay and keep up the special atmosphere that we now have…
i guess we will have to wait and see. this is still alot of money for some people.

I’m curious if anyone has actually been put on the mythical STH waiting list. I’ve got a 10-game package this season and would like to upgrade for STH-status next season, but the more I read about price increases and waiting lists and the skies opening to rain down fire, the more anxious I get about it even being possible.

I finally got my renewal today, and they moved my seats for the playoffs only. Apparently, if you sit in sections 421 or 422 and you’re row L or higher, they are taking your seats and giving them to the media, since we’re right next to the press box. I’m super pissed. They moved me to 425, which is an end, which I hate. There is a reason, besides money, that I chose the seats that I did. I sat in the ends last season quite a few times, and I really didn’t like my view. Plus, we’re all spread out, so we won’t have all our normal STH friends around us. I sat in my current seats for last year’s playoffs, so I don’t know why we can’t sit in our seats again next year.
I’m pretty steamed right now. haha
Wow, I didn’t see anything like that on our side. Was it in a separate letter?
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
It was in the packet after the letter from Ted. It specified that it was only those 2 sections and those rows. There’s a door to the press box not far from our seats, and it mentioned something about extra press and their need to access the press box during the Conference and Stanley Cup Finals. I know we didn’t get that far last year, but still. Why not just relocate us if we get that far this year? I’m guessing they’re gonna be selling my seats during the first two rounds, which kinda sucks!
