I had been sleeping ‘cause the Federal Government is closed but had thought I’d scheduled the Clips to post early. I was mistaken.

So if my new fanpost seems somewhat familiar, here’s the exchange in November that you may be remembering.

This story, by the way, is fantastic. Except that it’s kind of made me a little bit of a Jordan Staal fan. Nobody let F&B see this comment. (Zephyr, is there any way for me to turn on F&B’s ignore feature for one comment only?)

I have trouble myself as a Coyotes fan. They’ve got a Staal and an Orpik.

I’ve never seen Andrew play, so I have no idea. The Yotes signed him as a FA because the Sabres, who drafted him years ago, didn’t want him after he finished at BC. He’s spent this year traveling between the ECHL and AHL.
I saw Jared Staal play at rookie camp this past year. He was slow and lumbering, but seemed to have decent hockey sense. He’s still playing in the OHL, so it will most likely be several years before he’s ready for the NHL.
"You ever use smelling salts, every time you type a bad blog?" Brooks Laich
Wow. Jared’s parents say he is the most talented of the bunch but lazy. Didn’t think he’d be slow and lumbering. More like disinterested.
Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.

I hear ya. Flash is one of my favorite players but he really hasn’t been playing well lately. He looks tired to me, he’s one who could use the break to recover…but he’s not going to get it. I hope playing for the Czech team will be enough of a charge to get him back on track in March.

Yeah, he’s one of my favorites too… I think he’ll be able to get back on track, though. The whole team needs to practice, but the schedule’s been just brutal. With some practice under their belts, they’ll pull things back together without too much trouble, I think.

Btw, don’t know if anyone pulled this out last night, but here is the explanation of the Sami Kapanen goal that was allowed to stand in the ’08 playoffs:
Explanation on Philadelphia’s second goal at 9:47 of the second period – Washington’s Shaone Morrisonn plays the puck and Philadelphia’s Patrick Thoresen lays a legal body check on Morrisonn. No Philadelphia player makes contact with Washington goaltender Huet (Rule 69). This play is not reviewable.
Substitute a few names and it looks a lot like what happened last night, no?

That’s why the NHL’s officiating and disciplinary system is never mistaken for being competent. They can’t consistently enforce their own damned rules.
Now drink with me deeply of the bourbon, scotch, and rye until such time as we are fighting drunk.
by Steckel Me Elmo on Feb 11, 2010 9:55 AM EST up reply actions
Ovechkin ruling was the right one, imo and the Kapanen ruling was the wrong one. Yeah, it would be nice if NHL refs were, you know, a tad more consistent.
I have no problem calling it interference either, but like everyone else I just want some consistency.
"You ever use smelling salts, every time you type a bad blog?" Brooks Laich
What’s ironic is I was kind of mad they didn’t call interference. It kind of just turned into one of those “WTF? Let’s punch a hole in the wall. Did they do that for their own pleasure?” situations for me.
I guess you learn something new every day. Like rule 69.6 of the NHL’s rulebook.
Revenge is a dish best served cold.

by Sombrero Guy on Feb 11, 2010 10:18 AM EST up reply actions
As per NHL guidelines the rules are vague enough to give the refs the ability to botch a call and still get backing by the league.
Based on the reading of the rules it’s not applicable in the case last night at all because:
a) There was no shot on goal for Price to defend
b) Price could have kept the puck out of the net if he were more nimble, he was not physically prevented an opportunity by Gill OR Ovechkin, the puck simply got by him, he may have not been able to see the puck or realize the puck was coming, but if that’s interference, screening the goalie will soon be illegal.
The case of Philadelphia it’s a little bit hairier:
a) There was cross-checking/interference before the shot that wasn’t called when Shaone Morrison was checked
b) The intent of the check was to clear Huet from the goal, it succeeded and Huet was prevented an opportunity to defend the shot by the actions of the attacking team. The rule doesn’t specify that the attacking player interfering with the goalie has to touch the goalie himself, in fact they changed the rule that season during the Rangers/Devils series when Sean Avery danced like a moron in front of Brodeur so that the rule now specifies that the player doesn’t have to be touching the goaltender.
True to NHL officiating form there is no such thing as precedent or consistency, just incompetency that leads to questions of bias.
So basically, if we asked the league to clarify their position going forward, the answer would still be “It depends.”
Russian Machine very rarely breaks. Oh and f**k Brooks Orpik.
Going forward? when have they done differently?
I was attempting to make a rule based on observation of behavior. While they might not say “It depends” they will say something along the lines of: It was the correct call because of such and such rule. The rule may be exist but not fully encapsulate the situation in question.
A more realistic expectation than “It depends” is for your questions to meet a void and/or you will receive no substantive answer.
Per the Peerless recap, I thought it was the 1st (and 2nd) time the Caps have allowed in the first minute of a period in 2010, not this season.
The season stat just doesn’t sound right to me.

Listening to the Montreal fans boo Ovechkin everytime he touched the puck and then sing-songing Theo made me wonder if I had mistakenly turned on a Flyers game. I thought Canadien fans were supposed to be such hockey savants and above that “low-brow” behavior?
I thought Montreal fans were famous for booing their OWN goalies, so, I wouldn’t expect them to be any nicer to the visitors.

Don't be glum, it's just a sign of things to come
If it had to end, and it did, I prefer the way it went down last night, as boutros alluded to, in OT rather than getting blown out. And it’s hard to hate on Montreal when they have a decimated lineup and still lay half a dozen on our full, healthy complement of Dmen.
At the end of it all, the same questions still remain—sorry, Homer McFanboy—but I’m ready for a little retribution against OTT tonight.

So now who thinks we’re as deep as we need to be at D? Oisk as our fall back guy is scary. And not scary good.
OK, it’s one loss after 14 straight wins. We have just looked so out of focus for the past few games that this was bound to happen. BB hit it on the head: no practices = no time to work on team issues.
I’d still like to make a run at Hammy. Maybe Hejda. I think you can bump down Oisk/Sloane and still maintain chemistry.
"More Gary Thorne, please."
I’m with you bigonetimer. We didn’t deserve to win that game, we played poorly. They were the better team. I hope people don’t keep talking about the Ovi callback as the reason we broke the streak because it isn’t. Team officials are on twitter moaning about it and that is in bad taste. Breaks go both ways over the course of a season, and I could probably come up with 5 that went our way during the streak. We really need to move on.
"We take the shortest route to the puck and arrive in ill humor." - Bobby Clarke
There were a few games during the streak that the Caps played poorly and probably “deserved” to lose. The streak hid some flaws. Now it’s time to get back to work.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Of course, having more practice would help too.
That was one difference between the Pens and us during the playoffs. Bylsma would have a light practice where the Pens would work on systems stuff. Boudreau would not have practice — or an optional one.
Rocking the Red since 1975
You gotta love knowing that the Caps scored 4 or more in 15 of those games during the streak (ok, counting last night’s loss), and 3 in the other 2 games. In fact the last time they had less than 3 was on Jan. 2 when they lost to LA.
On the other hand it’s looking like the defense is counting too much on the offense. I want to see more games where wild 3rd period comebacks aren’t necessary.
That could very well be related to the degrees of injuries. Hard to ask Poti and Erskine to strap on skates when they are already gutting it out with broken feet. Of course, we don’t really know what PIT had going on but considering the silence and lack of surgeries after the series I’ll go out on a limb and say it wasn’t as bad as ours.
Killer_Carlson and Steckel Me Elmo are like brothers to me. And when I say brothers I don't mean like actual brothers. I mean it like how black people use it, which is more meaningful, I think.

No, Borque scored the first goal in the Teddy Bear Toss game in his first game back in HER after the Pens waived him.

He did, I remember – but that picture is definitely A. Gordon. Maybe going in for the celebration?

Yeah, I’d put him in between blonde and brunette – more of a light brown than anything. I just said it b/c CapsFan75 had referred to him as a redhead before.

Maybe I’ve only ever seen him covered in sweat, but I don’t see redhead when I see him…
Flash is a redhead. Semin might have some read highlights, maybe… auburn’s darker, isn’t it?

Auburn == dark red. (When he’s not sweaty, his hair looks pretty red at times.)

Unless one of them got eliminated in Round 2, NJ hasn’t exactly had the best track record in the playoffs, as of late. Neither of those two teams has done too well as of late and they’re both in serious danger of falling out of first place.

But the contract! Yuck. Do you think anyone bites? Or do you think they’ll but him on re-entry?
(On Mike Green) He’s urban, you northern folk wouldn’t understand!
No one’s going to do that. He’s got another year and you can’t duck the cap hit. That’s a big bite to not be able to get rid of. Not like Nylander, who’s contract was not an over 35 deal. Although if he went to Europe, would it go away?

Yeah, Rangers fans in general absolutely hated the guy off the bat. The Betts incident was still too fresh and Betts was a fan favorite. Doesn’t help that Brash is too old to fight well or play an honest shift, but the fans weren’t even going to give him a chance to alienate them with poor play.

I heard from numerous Ranger fans that he is unwilling/unable to fight, and never could do much else. A total liability on the ice.

Ouch.
Last season, it didn’t seem so much that he himself wasn’t willing to fight, but that the rest of the teams’ enforcers weren’t willing to go with him.
Unfortunately, that knee injury pretty much sealed it for him as far as being an effective presence on the ice. He wasn’t the same after, and the Rangers won’t put him out there, so he can’t do his thing… and as an almost pure enforcer, he’s a dying breed in the NHL today anyway, a holdover from days gone by…
Sad. I like Brash.

Rangers fans are upset that he never seems to win a fight when he does drop the gloves. I wouldn’t say that he never could do much else or that he was always a liability on the ice, but at this point in his career he certainly is.

Hi, I'm John Ferguson Jr. and I give out no trade like candy!
(On Mike Green) He’s urban, you northern folk wouldn’t understand!
I get the feeling that we’re (Caps fans) the only fan base that have any idea of who Brash is as a person. Fans of other teams just see him as a goon and haven’t tried to look beyond it.
I wish him luck and hope he can find his niche if he keeps playing or retires with dignity.

Josh Gorges will be okay The story’s in French, but it says he practiced this morning and plans to travel with the team to Philadelphia for Friday’s game. (And I think I’ve finally learned to post a link….)
