Alex Ovechkin Named First Star of the Month
"Ovechkin led all scorers in January with 26 points (nine goals, 17 assists) and posted a +16 rating in 15 games, helping the Capitals go 13-2-0 and finish the month with a franchise record-tying 10-game winning streak. Named team captain Jan. 5, Ovechkin tallied eight multiple-point games thereafter, beginning with three points (one goal, two assists), a +4 rating and 10 shots on goal in a 5-2 victory over the Ottawa Senators Jan. 7. He tallied his first career four-assist game and tied a career high with five points in a 6-1 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs Jan. 15 and notched three points (two goals, one assist) in a 6-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins Jan. 21. Ovechkin closed the month by scoring the game-winning goal in the third period of a 3-2 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning Jan. 31. The reigning Hart and Richard Trophy winner ranks second in the NHL in goals (35), second in points (76), first in shots (248) and first in plus/minus (+35)." - Release

No Alex, no ratings. Know Alex, know ratings.
Yeah, I have that, but that’s more commentary, not the NHL’s press release (similar to that last Backstrom FanShot, I prefer the release).

Yeah, it’s a tough month to get in there – lots of players having big months. Just on our team alone there were a couple of candidates, including Semin, Knuble and this week’s third star…
Conspiracy alert
Backs doesn’t get a star only because the league hates the Caps.
Prove it’s wrong, if you disagree. See? You can’t.

They can’t give two slots to guys from the same line. So, Sedin means no Burrows, and Ovie means no Knuble, who I think scored 12 goals in Jan.
A stellar month for the new Captain! Just like with Nicky I hope his February is just as good.
Tom Brady is Sidney Crosby, except Tom Brady has felt the touch of a woman, and has his own house.
9 – 17 – 26, +16…yeah, I’d say that’s a pretty good month.
When I have a moment I’ll take a peek at last year’s totals to find out how many regular players did not put up those numbers in the entire year.
"You're gonna eat that g**d**n Koho, three!"
AO’s January production would have tied him for 228th in points for all forwards based on production for the entire 2008-09 season. If that makes any sense.
In other words, Ethan Moreau, Guillaume Latendresse, Jay McClement and Troy Brower all had 26 points in ‘08-’09, with between 56 and 82 GP. AO topped that in 15 games. Pretty impressive
I can’t find a site that will let me filter by a min. GP variable, btw.
"You're gonna eat that g**d**n Koho, three!"
Danny Briere managed just 25 points in his entire season that year (29 GP).
Do you need it to filter by a minimum GP, though? I know how and where but I’m not sure it changes the argument…
I was just trying to weed out the one—week callups, etc and see how many “regulars” finished behind AO’s point totals for January in their entire year.
I agree that it doesn’t change the argument. I saw the Briere thing, which made me happy for all sorts of reasons I’m not proud of.
If you know the “where”, I’m sure I can figure out the “how”…I’m sure this is going to be a painfully obvious site, but I looked at NHL.com, ESPN, CBS, Behind The Net and Yahoo…

Ah, got it – what I generally do (trade secrets here, folks…) is go to hockey-reference.com and pull up skater statistics. They have this handy thing where you can turn a table into a set of data in .csv form. Then you copy and paste it into Excel, apply filters, and voila! Sort by whatever you want, set columns to greater than or equal to, etc.
Nice. I feel like a tourist who gets invited into the inner sanctum of the temple…

But he hasn’t won a Cup and can’t play defense! Go Pens!

Because now I can justify browsing and commenting during the work day with the argument that I am promoting my business.
Wow… I had no idea how dominant Aucoin and Giroux are in AHL scoring: http://theahl.com/stats/statdisplay.php?type=top_scorers
Even crazier
As a team they’re destroying the league in goals for…

In other organization honors news
Dmitry Kugryshev was runner up for QMJHL Player of the Week, and had two goals and four assists in a 7-5 Remparts win yesterday.
IS KEPTIN NOW
Delly’s team is also playing up a storm. Really – go take a look. And his head coach seems to follow the Bruce Boudreau Handbook for Goaltender Management©.
IS KEPTIN NOW
Cody Eakin’s fans recently voted him the second best Swift Current Bronco of the decade, with 22% of the vote behind (new Toronto Maple Leaf) Ian White with 27%.
IS KEPTIN NOW
Join the Cody Eakin lobby. I think I might be a founding member.

No Backstrom is the selfish one.
Do you know how many times he scored goals this month instead of passing to one of his teammates?
And when he does pass, he seems to favor passing to Ovie instead of Schultz, as evidenced in their respective goal totals.

Backstroms new uptick in scoring has been attributed to an audio ear piece linked to the SHOOT guy in attendance.
I look to the future because that's where I'm going to spend the rest of my life.

As I just tweeted… Jaw-dropping stat time: Alex Ovechkin played 15 games in Jan. and was on the ice for 37 goals for and only 5 goals against (0 in last 6 gms)
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
That in part reflects his presence on the smokin PP and his absence on the PK, though. Still, an awesome month anyway you shake it. Wonder if he would have gotten this had he not buried the game winner last night.
erskine has scored...now i can die in peace
No doubt. But he’s eighth among NHL forwards in even strength ice time per game, so it’s certainly not all PP-inflated. It’s hard to fake that kind of disparity.

B b b b…but he doesn’t backcheck!
Man, that is complete dominance right there.
"You're gonna eat that g**d**n Koho, three!"
You don’t need to back check when you keep the puck in the other teams zone the entire game!
Seriously though, on this run the Caps have had, I don’t know where I would go for stats for this, but it just seems like 08-19-22 have dominated in offensive zone time on their shifts. Yesterday was a case in point, even if they started in their own zone, once one of those three got it out of the Caps zone, it generally stayed out for the rest of their shift.
Whether that’s because it’s impossible to knock Backstrom off the puck, or Knuble’s net presence has opened up more space, or the three have finally clicked, or they have just been playing that good, or parts of all of the above (my vote) I don’t know. But I like it. And I hope it continues.

Hey, who’s the 16th most valuable defensive forward in the NHL?
That’s right, Alexander Ovechkin.
Atta dinnin stick a who!
