Is a Nicklas Backstrom Contract Extension Close?

Per Aftonbladet, the Caps may be close to signing Nicklas Backstrom to a long-term deal that could be announced following the Olympic break.

The team knows that he will be a super star for many years to come and they want him signed throughout the rest of his career according to a source.

According to the article, the team is seeking a deal that would keep Nick in D.C. through 2020-2021, but Backstrom's agent is looking for a five-year deal (which certainly would seem like a sizable gap for something that's allegedly imminent).

A Caps official said the team has no comment on the report.

what would we be looking at here…7-8 mil???

Probably, or maybe a touch less. The Toews/Kane and Semin contracts are pretty good comparables.

Agreed on Toews/Kane as comps, less so on Semin, in part because his is such a short term and also because his UFA years come much sooner.

Yeah, but there’s no good comp on a 10-12 year deal. Backstrom would be financially smart to go with a 5-year deal. He’ll be worth Crosby money by then.

by Ninjak on Feb 1, 2010 9:34 AM EST up reply actions

Agreed that there’s no good 10+ year comp. Obviously the shorter deal would have higher potential earning upside for Nick, but a longer term would be much safer.

by J.P. on Feb 1, 2010 9:37 AM EST up reply actions

That might be the reason why the terms are off, but the contract is close? If the money’s right, perhaps Nick is weighing whether he wants to test the market when he turns 27.

Damn! Looks like my women is on time.

by Bald Pollack on Feb 1, 2010 9:39 AM EST up reply actions

Maybe he’s weighing two deals – a 5-year and a looooong one, but is relatively happy with either. As I recall, AO’s monster deal was actually a 6-year deal they’d agreed to and then they said “why not add another 7 years?”

by J.P. on Feb 1, 2010 9:44 AM EST up reply actions

I get the feeling that the Caps REALLY would prefer the looooooong one. Ted talks about having built a team that can compete for the cup for the next decade as if Backstrom is already signed to that kind of term.

by Ninjak on Feb 1, 2010 9:47 AM EST up reply actions

As I recall Ted saying, they signed Ovi to the deal, and then just did the extension to the deal at the same time.

Times like these that you hope and pray that the quality of the organization Ted has built translates into a “hometown discount” of sorts. Backstrom must surely know how lucky he is to be here in DC, not only because of his teammates, but also because of his coach, GM, owner, and everything else that shapes the team being top-notch. These mega-deals determine so much of the club’s future.

by Ninjak on Feb 1, 2010 9:41 AM EST up reply actions

Backstrom would not be getting anywhere close to these points on, say, the Toronto Maple Leafs or New York Rangers.

I don’t see how or why you front load a contract for a player who’s going to be no more than 30 at the end of it. It’s not like he’s going to be bought out of it, barring some incredible career collapse.

Agreed. Only reason would be so he’s more moveable in the out-years (i.e. his cap hit is higher than his salary, so he’s more dollar-affordable).

If the player is really savvy and bought into the time value of money concept, that could be another reason. But I doubt if that really makes too much difference to the average pro athlete.

If they don’t take time value of money into account, they need better representation. At a 3% risk-free rate of return, $7 million in 2016 is worth about $5.86 today.

by Kirg on Feb 1, 2010 12:21 PM EST up reply actions

Great minds. I’ve made that point before, but came to the same conclusion as you. Players probably don’t care much, but should. If you really want to keep your team together and open up cap space, that’s the way to do it, IMO. Of course, that requires owners that have the cash to do that and players that understand and are willing to do it. And finally, what agent is going to suggest that to his client?

Now let's say you and I go toe to toe on bird law and see who comes out the victor.

by Rob Parker on Feb 1, 2010 5:08 PM EST up reply actions

I suppose there’s some logic to that, but again, I think that only makes sense if you’re looking to hedge your bets, something that more likely applies to an older player.

by gfcaps fan on Feb 1, 2010 11:55 AM EST up reply actions

Does anyone else think that players should take a discount for being able to sign 10+ year deal considering it is a Guaranteed contract?

by CAPFan4Life on Feb 1, 2010 9:39 AM EST reply actions

I go back and forth on that, but ultimately, it’s likely to be a discount at no matter the price. That’s if you believe that once the economy improves that NHL revenues will continue to improve and the cap will continue to go up. Ovechkin taking appoximately 9.5 million for 13 years was a gamble for both sides. He already took a little under the then-cap, and it’s already a good bit under the current cap. If the orgininal deal of six years had been made, in 2014 how much would he have been able to get?

i say sign him for 30yrs for a total of $100M. front load it over the first 10 years. $3.3 million cap hit.

he seems like he take good care of himslef and swedes tend to live longer than most. he should be pretty good into his 40’s.

i think that would pass the CBA sniff test.

How blessed are we to have won the 2004 lottery to get Ovy, then 2 years later draft the perfect center for him, and they have become great friends to boot! Couldn’t write a better story. I think Baks is smart looking for a 5-6 year deal. That appears to be the Cup window in DC in many eyes. I’d argue it could be longer, but I think that is neither here nor there. It’s what he and his agent think. He’d be out of the deal just at the time his value would be at its peak assuming he continues to progress and doesn’t suffer any major injuries that impair his game long term.

Comps

Jonathan Toews, 21, is signed through 2015 at $6.3 million per year.

Anze Kopitar, 21, is signed through 2016 at an average salary of ~$7 million per year.

Paul Stastny, 23, is signed through 2014 at $6.6 million per year/

(all salary figures are from nhlnumbers.com)

Backie’s stats are better than all three of these guys by about 10-20%, so I think $7.5 million per year is perfectly reasonable. I’d like to see a 6-7 year deal at least.
