Outstanding idea and I would extend it to other penalties, too. If the refs are reluctant to call them because the consequence is too harsh, give them more granularity in their decisions.

I’d probably just do something similar to boarding, having a minor and major penalty for instigation, and apply your 1 and 3 scenarios to them. Just for the sake of consistency.

I really do like the spirit of your idea, though.

It may just be me, but I feel there’s a bit of a post-trade hangover effect. Even though Flash had spent some time in the press box of late, and wasn’t particularly effective in any of his assignments on-ice, I can’t imagine they aren’t missing him in the room.

Good thought. It was my perception that Flash was liked in the room, and he seems to have been a quality person off-ice. Hannan appears to be just what we wanted, but it takes time for the fit to be established among teammates. I’m so glad GMGM managed to make this trade happen sooner rather than later.

We lost the first 2 games after Chimmer joined us (3, if you count the one before he actually got here). By all accounts, Flash was well-liked and funny in the room. Hannon’s a vet, so you would expect him to be somewhat vocal, but you have to wonder how he’s asserting himself, and how the others are taking it.

Seemed like every time I saw Laich with the puck, he was swooping around the back of the net for that stupid stuff attempt that never works for him. Rarely was a Cap in front screening the goalie, especially in the third period.

by red army line on Dec 5, 2010 12:41 PM EST up reply actions

I thought this was very atypical of Laich. He’s usually very good at positioning himself in front of the net to get a rebound or deflection. IIRC the goals he’s scored this season, at least the most recent ones, have come as a result of being in perfect position to capitalize on such opportunities. Why he was spending more time behind the net is a mystery to me.

by Ovietracker on Dec 5, 2010 4:42 PM EST up reply actions

That is definitely not atypical of Laich. He does that shit all the time. I hate that “set up to the side and try to jam the puck home” move. Set your ass up on top of the crease and don’t move.

Lockout talk makes me want to go out and choke an old lady - Elliotte Friedman

by Rob Parker on Dec 5, 2010 4:43 PM EST up reply actions

I vividly recall Laich scoring recently where he was in front of the net. Maybe I’m extrapolating or my memory is defective, but he seems to be much more effective when he’s in position in front of the net.

by Ovietracker on Dec 5, 2010 4:45 PM EST up reply actions

He scored by deflecting an Ovie shot. Any other time when the puck gets moved over to Backstrom and sometimes he’ll rotate it down low for Laich to the side of the net. Unlike Federov, who would sometimes make a nice backdoor pass to Semin or work the give and go with Backstrom (usually the pro timing saucer into the middle of the box of defenders for Backstrom to one time it home), Laich in that position if he even thinks he has any room at all will try to take the puck to the net and stuff it directly into the goalie’s pads.

If he would vary it some and work the give an go with Backstrom or fake the stuff and pulled it back to go for top corner short side I would have so much less of a problem with it. But I swear his shooting percentage on that move has to be sub 5%.

Everything ends badly...otherwise it wouldn't end.

by Davethecapsfan on Dec 5, 2010 5:09 PM EST up reply actions

Thanks for the helpful insights to F&B, Dave and timmy. I’ll try to be more observant of Laich’s tendencies in future games.

by Ovietracker on Dec 5, 2010 10:02 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t think it’s solely his tendencies, as I said Federov used to set up in the same area but he always had more than one play. Laich just always seems to go for that stuff. He has skill and brains to do something else in that spot more.

Everything ends badly...otherwise it wouldn't end.

by Davethecapsfan on Dec 5, 2010 11:38 PM EST up reply actions

Laich needs to admit that he’s not going to be some sterling playmaker and just sit in front of the goalie. Franzen might not go down in the record books as a superstar but he has his name on some exclusive hardware specifically because of how he played and what it did for a team.

by sydtron on Dec 6, 2010 12:00 AM EST up reply actions

He is much more effective when in front of the net, but he often parks himself beside the net – where he’s less effective. That was a major problem against Montreal.

There is no problem a hammer cannot either fix or make irrelevant.

by timmyv38 on Dec 5, 2010 5:24 PM EST up reply actions

He scored in front of the net against STL, but he was set up at the side and the puck got to him as he was crashing the net. He got the GWG against NSH by going to the net. I’m not saying he doesn’t go to the net, I’m saying that he frequently sets up shop to the side where he’s not in position for a screen or a rebound and he loves to try the stuff move from there.

by CapsFan75 on Dec 5, 2010 5:08 PM EST up reply actions

Disagree. That was an incredible shift and well worth viewing multiple times with the added bonus of Ovi getting a goal. The picture of him putting his head on his arms in relief after getting back to the bench demonstrates how important it was for him to score.

The Caps are not going to win every game, and frankly I’m not that interested in them having the games come easy, especially in our division. But neither am I that concerned if they meet one of our division opponents in the playoffs. They have to figure games like this out, and that shift provides a good lesson. The star players cycled and shot and gathered their own rebounds and wore down their opponents. They deserved and got that goal. That’s a lesson in itself.

I wouldn’t recommend watching the whole game. I’d say fast forward through the first period and most of that period to that goal sequence, and watch that sequence. I’d say, the third period is very forgettable and can be deleted.

I find it hard to believe that Semin is in Coach BB’s doghouse for any reason. The possibility of some injury being involved makes more sense, not that this would be preferable. I hope whatever is going on with Semin resolves itself quickly.

I find it hard to believe myself. Now that someone pointed out the injury above, it makes more sense. If he’s too “hurt” to handle the puck properly..

by Rob Parker on Dec 5, 2010 4:26 PM EST up reply actions

Perhaps, but sometimes someone has to say what no one thinks is possible. Ovi’s position is always assumed, but sometimes those assumptions need to be explored. That’s truly begging the question for the statement that Ovi always belongs on PP1.

by Seminrocks on Dec 5, 2010 8:08 PM EST up reply actions

I will admit I had proposed sticking Ovi on PP unit 2 a few weeks back. It involved sticking our best other guys on PP unit 1 and Ovi with PP unit 2. Figured, if nothing else, it would induce Bruce to get the overused Unit 1 off the ice before they get too tired and give him an incentive to use the 2nd unit.

Yes, it was a radical proposal and I was slammed for it. Still, the point is that, even though Ovi has fantastic endurance, he just can’t play 2 minutes in every power play. Even he runs out of gas some times.

After reading your post CapsFan75 I checked the boxscore from the Thrashers game. Ovie’s TOI was 25:38 which seems high. I don’t keep track of such stats so I’m wondering if this was his highest TOI for the season. This begs the question if time management is still an issue for Boudreau when putting Ovie on the ice and how long he stays.

by Ovietracker on Dec 5, 2010 9:38 PM EST up reply actions

Caps have 5 PPs on Saturday, and only two PKs (one for a whooping 6 seconds). That’s going the result in high TOI for Ovie.

TOI, last 5 games:

11/26 vs. TBL: 18:58
11/28 vs. CAR: 21: 27
12/01 vs. STL: 18:52
12/02 vs. DAL: 21:27
12/04 vs ATL: 25:38

I’ve not gone back through the rest of the season yet, but the 25 minutes appears to be the exception right now. I’ll be most interested to see how Ovie’s minutes are managed the last 6 weeks of the season. But right now, I’m not willing to jump on the “OMG! Ovie’s minutes are being mismanaged by Bruce!!!!!!!11” train based on one game.

I agree with you on this, I don’t see Semin working very well with on PP2 with 26. We’ve all seen how it doesn’t work when he’s on a line with Chimera.

Because, if I’m to understand at least the motivation of this, it’s to have multiple shooters on each line, as well as multiple people at least capable of creating some sort of havoc in the crease.

PP1 has Green/Ovie taking shots and Laich/Knuble in the blue.
PP2 has Semin/Carlson taking shots and Hendricks/Fehr.

Frustrating game in so many ways. But I am going to remember that amazing shift at the end of the second period that led finally to Ovi’s goal.

It will rank up there for me with Nicky’s stunning shot blocking PK from last season as well as the amazing OT goal of his against the Hawks.

Agreed. I think Corey tweeted that the shift lasted like 1:57. BB should show video of that shift as how to run a power play, even if it wasn’t.

The Caps awesome shift near the end of the second period that resulted in Ovie’s goal should be required viewing on a regular basis. This Caps team shows signs of sometimes forgetting how to do the basic things that get rewarded with goals. Keep this one ready, Coach BB, it might come in handy several more times before this season ends.

Atlanta definitely was “saved by the bell” at the end of period 2. The Caps had all the momentum after Ovie’s goal, but unfortunately the intermission allowed the Thrashers to re-group and then score a PP goal themselves as a cushion.

The most disturbing part of last night’s game was it brought back eerie and uncomfortable memories of the Caps playoff series with the Habs. I had hoped they would have gotten this out of their system by now, but unfortunately Pavelec isn’t the first—and most likely won’t be the last—goale who will face the Caps this season as the second coming of Terry Sawchuk. The Caps better learn to solve this type of goalie if they hope to make a deep playoff run this time around.

by Ovietracker on Dec 5, 2010 4:28 PM EST up reply actions

My opinion exactly. Hence, I was feeling really down about the Caps chances of advancing past Round 1.

by CapsFan75 on Dec 5, 2010 5:16 PM EST up reply actions

Do you feel this way about this team’s chances CapsFan75? I go through periods of believing the Caps will go all the way this year, alternating between periods of gloom and doom that they will repeat last season’s early exit. I suppose that means I haven’t decided whether I’m a glass half full or glass half empty type of person. Being a Caps fan can create its own kind of schizophrenia.

by Ovietracker on Dec 5, 2010 9:41 PM EST up reply actions

That’s about the size of it. I’m so bipolar about the Caps chances this year. On bad days, like yesterday, I fear their chances of advancing are next to nil. On good days, I figure, maybe, well maybe, they’ll advance much further.

Perhaps, schizophrenia is not the right term to use. I’d probably use bipolar. But some of the disappointments over the years can bring out the worse instincts of paranoia.

I’m not into psych terms so I’ll defer to your opinion about bipolar as preferable to schizophrenia CF75. In any case we can agree that the Caps can and often have induced bizarre behavior and paranoia on the part of their fans.

Oh lookee, I updated my profile and it’s shown up in my last few posts. Maybe the Caps will take notice and start playing like they want it so I can finally come down on the side of being a glass half full person.

On paper the Leafs seem to be the perfect antidote for the Caps to nip their two game losing streak in the bud. However, the Leafs are coming off a hugh SO win over the Bruins and their goalie Tim Thomas. I hope John-Sebastien Giguere doesn’t do a Halak/Pavelec on the Caps.

Sometimes those only one game becomes two or three games, which is what Halak did to the Caps in games 5, 6, and 7 last postseason.

by Ovietracker on Dec 5, 2010 10:13 PM EST up reply actions

Really! I was unaware of that!

Sarcasm aside I refuse to wring my hands and worry every time a goalie has a good game and steals a game from the Caps. It happens. And it’s early December. And there may still be some trade hangover. There were also good points to take from that game, including one very fine shift and Ovi feeling some relief.

Got to keep wins and losses in perspective.

Don’t think Halak (or any Slovak) would like to be called Czech. And Thomas is from the US. As far as current Czech goalies, you’ve got Vokoun in FLA and this guy:

While I don’t have a twitter account, I’ve been reading some rumors that MP may be back with the Caps for the Toronto game.

Next question, who is sitting out to make room for him? Or is someone hurt that we haven’t heard about yet. (Chimmer got stitches in his mouth for the high sticks he received, without anywhere near the compensatory penalties called against the perpetrators but doubt that he’ll miss any time.)

Also, not surprised that the team is shuffling the lineup for tomorrow. Will DJ King be in the lineup? Given that Toronto is a physical team, it would not surprise me but if Perreault is up, we probably won’t see King.

If MP is up, someone has to be sent down or put on IR. The Caps don’t have a roster space otherwise – 13 forwards, 8 dmen, 2 goalies already.

Methinks Oisk will play tomorrow. Poti thinks that he may possibly play but will make up his mind tomorrow. That to me sounds like he’s doubtful. Boudreau would probably prefer to wait and dress Poti when he’s more ready.

With a new veteran D-man in the lineup, it makes sense that Poti could take the time off to heal properly without him or BB thinking that the team is too weak on the blue line without him.
