I think I saw a tweet that said the count was over 7,000 teddy bears. Did they really all hit the ice?
"It's always good to have vikings."
From the Bears Press Release:
7,199 stuffed bears were thrown onto the ice by fans for Teddy Bear Toss Night. The bears will be donated to the Children’s Miracle Network. Saturday’s attendance at Giant Center was 10,505.
"I would feed them lefts until I was pretty much tired of doing it." - Alan May, JRR, 10.16.2010
But it’s taking them so long to get them off the ice!
"And then they’ll look at guys in my situation, that could play three good games in a row and have one bad shift, and they’ll say, ‘Well, that’s why he’s been in the minor leagues his whole career.'" --Matt Hendricks
So per Corey, The ATL Coach and Ladd both agreed that Steckel’s knee was a penalty but not dirty. Yet he is held to account for his actions. Ok, fine. At the time, Slater probably had no idea whether it was a dirty hit, accident or somewhere in between. He sees one of his players on the ice after a collision with Stecks and sticks up for him.
Regardless of what Slater was reacting to, it still merits an instigator per the rules:
46.11 Instigator – An instigator of an altercation shall be a player who by his actions or demeanor demonstrates any/some of the following criteria: distance traveled; gloves off first; first punch thrown; menacing attitude or posture; verbal instigation or threats; conduct in retaliation to a prior game (or season) incident; obvious retribution for a previous incident in the game or season.
I’ve highlighted the two parts of the criteria that Slater clearly met. I think one of the reasons the instigator doesn’t get called here is the automatic 10 minute misconduct that comes with an instigator call. The Ref are reluctant to call that when it’s a situation where a player is reacting to a play on the ice such as this, preferring to let the boys settle it amongst themselves.
I honestly have no problem with what Slater did, but you can’t ignore the fact that he was the instigator. I think there needs to be a provision to allow for separate instigator penalties (similar to the various grades of flagrant fouls in the NBA).
Slater gets an instigator 1, clearly instigating a fight as a direct result of a penalized play on the ice. 2 minutes, 5 for fighting, no misconduct.
An instigator 2 would be something similar to what happened to Sloan back in Calgary a few years back. Being attacked for a clean hit. 2 plus 5 plus 10 minute misconduct.
And instigator 3 would be instigating in the last five minutes of a game like what that knucklefuck from NJ did to Mackan at the home opener. Clearly hunting him down for no reason. 2, 5, game plus a love note from Colin Campbell.
The instigator is supposed to prevent situations like what happened last night from occurring. But clearly players don’t care about the potential extra penalty, particularly if they know the refs aren’t going to call it. They should have a bit of defined leeway in calling the degree of instigation.
Just trying to capture the spirit of the thing...

Outstanding idea and I would extend it to other penalties, too. If the refs are reluctant to call them because the consequence is too harsh, give them more granularity in their decisions.

It may just be me, but I feel there’s a bit of a post-trade hangover effect. Even though Flash had spent some time in the press box of late, and wasn’t particularly effective in any of his assignments on-ice, I can’t imagine they aren’t missing him in the room.

Good thought. It was my perception that Flash was liked in the room, and he seems to have been a quality person off-ice. Hannan appears to be just what we wanted, but it takes time for the fit to be established among teammates. I’m so glad GMGM managed to make this trade happen sooner rather than later.

We lost the first 2 games after Chimmer joined us (3, if you count the one before he actually got here). By all accounts, Flash was well-liked and funny in the room. Hannon’s a vet, so you would expect him to be somewhat vocal, but you have to wonder how he’s asserting himself, and how the others are taking it.

Oh dear, has Ovie been replaced as Semin’s #1 bromance? Or is Nicky Ovie’s #1 bromance? I have difficulty deciding who’s into whom, if you know what I mean. In any case, it looks like Semin has moved outside the Russian-only box. Mr. America Johnny Boy better get himself ready.
I think Semin’s been out of the Russian only bromance box for awhile. The fanshot from the beginning of the season requesting Semin pics has many fabulous photos of a chummy Semin. I didn’t realize just how fascinatingly fabulous and frequent Semin photos were until that fanshot. Ovi will however always be his BFF.

Is there a link somewhere to the fanshot of these Semin pics? I’d love to see a chummy Sasha since most pics I’ve seen of him have been very serious.
Search fanshots for Semin photos by WickedWitch around late October. Great photos. I didn’t realize the sheer volume of Semin candids. He likes to drape himself over everyone and anything.

I wasn’t unable to watch the game last night (Go Hokies!!) so where was Laich on the PP? He usually is around the net.
Seemed like every time I saw Laich with the puck, he was swooping around the back of the net for that stupid stuff attempt that never works for him. Rarely was a Cap in front screening the goalie, especially in the third period.

I thought this was very atypical of Laich. He’s usually very good at positioning himself in front of the net to get a rebound or deflection. IIRC the goals he’s scored this season, at least the most recent ones, have come as a result of being in perfect position to capitalize on such opportunities. Why he was spending more time behind the net is a mystery to me.
That is definitely not atypical of Laich. He does that shit all the time. I hate that “set up to the side and try to jam the puck home” move. Set your ass up on top of the crease and don’t move.
Lockout talk makes me want to go out and choke an old lady - Elliotte Friedman
I vividly recall Laich scoring recently where he was in front of the net. Maybe I’m extrapolating or my memory is defective, but he seems to be much more effective when he’s in position in front of the net.
He scored by deflecting an Ovie shot. Any other time when the puck gets moved over to Backstrom and sometimes he’ll rotate it down low for Laich to the side of the net. Unlike Federov, who would sometimes make a nice backdoor pass to Semin or work the give and go with Backstrom (usually the pro timing saucer into the middle of the box of defenders for Backstrom to one time it home), Laich in that position if he even thinks he has any room at all will try to take the puck to the net and stuff it directly into the goalie’s pads.
If he would vary it some and work the give an go with Backstrom or fake the stuff and pulled it back to go for top corner short side I would have so much less of a problem with it. But I swear his shooting percentage on that move has to be sub 5%.
Everything ends badly...otherwise it wouldn't end.
by Davethecapsfan on Dec 5, 2010 5:09 PM EST up reply actions
Thanks for the helpful insights to F&B, Dave and timmy. I’ll try to be more observant of Laich’s tendencies in future games.
I don’t think it’s solely his tendencies, as I said Federov used to set up in the same area but he always had more than one play. Laich just always seems to go for that stuff. He has skill and brains to do something else in that spot more.
Everything ends badly...otherwise it wouldn't end.
by Davethecapsfan on Dec 5, 2010 11:38 PM EST up reply actions
Laich needs to admit that he’s not going to be some sterling playmaker and just sit in front of the goalie. Franzen might not go down in the record books as a superstar but he has his name on some exclusive hardware specifically because of how he played and what it did for a team.
Many a night from yonder ivied casement, ere I went to rest,
Did I look on great Orion sloping slowly to the West.
He scored in front of the net against STL, but he was set up at the side and the puck got to him as he was crashing the net. He got the GWG against NSH by going to the net. I’m not saying he doesn’t go to the net, I’m saying that he frequently sets up shop to the side where he’s not in position for a screen or a rebound and he loves to try the stuff move from there.

Glad you got to see VA Tech win. It was a better game than the Caps, obviously.

Yes, I had the option of going to the Caps game but I turned it down to stay home and watch the Hokies. It was great to see them dominate FSU. I recorded the Caps game but I haven’t been able to bring myself to watch it if it’s a repeat of the Montreal series. This might be one to delete.
Just watch the last 3 minutes of the 2nd period. There’s an incredible shift there for Ovi’s goal.
"And then they’ll look at guys in my situation, that could play three good games in a row and have one bad shift, and they’ll say, ‘Well, that’s why he’s been in the minor leagues his whole career.'" --Matt Hendricks
Other than that, I’d say delete the frigging thing. VTCapsfan99, you made the right choice, in my opinion.
Rocking the Red for the Caps since 1975. Rocking the Red on additional fronts as well.
Disagree. That was an incredible shift and well worth viewing multiple times with the added bonus of Ovi getting a goal. The picture of him putting his head on his arms in relief after getting back to the bench demonstrates how important it was for him to score.
The Caps are not going to win every game, and frankly I’m not that interested in them having the games come easy, especially in our division. But neither am I that concerned if they meet one of our division opponents in the playoffs. They have to figure games like this out, and that shift provides a good lesson. The star players cycled and shot and gathered their own rebounds and wore down their opponents. They deserved and got that goal. That’s a lesson in itself.

I wouldn’t recommend watching the whole game. I’d say fast forward through the first period and most of that period to that goal sequence, and watch that sequence. I’d say, the third period is very forgettable and can be deleted.

What football did you watch? I hope it wasn’t the Skins.
And did you catch the Caps final shift of Period 2?
He watched Tech yesterday.
Rocking the Red for the Caps since 1975. Rocking the Red on additional fronts as well.
Yes, I see he watched VA Tech yesterday. I assumed he would be watching a replay of the Caps game, or at least the end of period 2 shift, sometime today after watching NFL football.
I’m a she actually:) I watched the redskins game, it was disturbing, but not as bad as their beatdown on MNF. II put NFL redzone on after that until I got distracted watching the hokies bball game. Then I ended up watching all the goals, Steckel’s kneeing/fight, and the last 2 mins of the second period. What an amazing stretch that was.
Coming home and watching the Hokies made my evening so, so much better, even if it meant staying up till 12:30 (thank goodness for the button on the DVR remote that fast-forwards 20 seconds – just made for watching a football game.:-)

Yeah, but Semin has the most PPG on the team (6), followed by Laich and Backs (4 each). Ovi only has 2, same as Fehr. And Ovi is not good on the point! Put Ovi on PP2. So why do you put your most dangerous PP scorer right now out there on PP2 for less time? I don’t get it.
Because he’s in the dog house for some reason. Other than that, I can’t think of a good reason.
Plus, he was not one of the extra attackers. Someone did point out last night that he wasn’t handling the puck too well. Still, I’m wondering what’s going on.

I know he wasn’t on the ice for practice one day last week (I think it was Tuesday when the trade went down) – I want to say I heard something from somewhere about a nagging injury they wanted him to rest. I agree. I recall someone here linking to a twitter feed concerning Semin’s nagging injury that they (the trainers) wanted him to rest. (I noticed that when Semin’s missing from practice, there usually is a nagging injury going on.)

I find it hard to believe that Semin is in Coach BB’s doghouse for any reason. The possibility of some injury being involved makes more sense, not that this would be preferable. I hope whatever is going on with Semin resolves itself quickly.
I find it hard to believe myself. Now that someone pointed out the injury above, it makes more sense. If he’s too “hurt” to handle the puck properly..
I would like to see his problems resolved as well. Heal, Sasha, heal.
Overall for this year, it seems that the first line has been toast without Semin and the second line has been toast, with or without Semin.

Perhaps, but sometimes someone has to say what no one thinks is possible. Ovi’s position is always assumed, but sometimes those assumptions need to be explored. That’s truly begging the question for the statement that Ovi always belongs on PP1.
I will admit I had proposed sticking Ovi on PP unit 2 a few weeks back. It involved sticking our best other guys on PP unit 1 and Ovi with PP unit 2. Figured, if nothing else, it would induce Bruce to get the overused Unit 1 off the ice before they get too tired and give him an incentive to use the 2nd unit.
Yes, it was a radical proposal and I was slammed for it. Still, the point is that, even though Ovi has fantastic endurance, he just can’t play 2 minutes in every power play. Even he runs out of gas some times.
Rocking the Red for the Caps since 1975. Rocking the Red on additional fronts as well.
After reading your post CapsFan75 I checked the boxscore from the Thrashers game. Ovie’s TOI was 25:38 which seems high. I don’t keep track of such stats so I’m wondering if this was his highest TOI for the season. This begs the question if time management is still an issue for Boudreau when putting Ovie on the ice and how long he stays.
Caps have 5 PPs on Saturday, and only two PKs (one for a whooping 6 seconds). That’s going the result in high TOI for Ovie.
Pledge Drive 2010-2011: SO KIDS CAN!! Help build a playground
And overly high times on ice and overly long shifts means less effectiveness towards the end. Or at least that’s my humble opinion.
Rocking the Red for the Caps since 1975. Rocking the Red on additional fronts as well.
TOI, last 5 games:
11/26 vs. TBL: 18:58
11/28 vs. CAR: 21: 27
12/01 vs. STL: 18:52
12/02 vs. DAL: 21:27
12/04 vs ATL: 25:38
I’ve not gone back through the rest of the season yet, but the 25 minutes appears to be the exception right now. I’ll be most interested to see how Ovie’s minutes are managed the last 6 weeks of the season. But right now, I’m not willing to jump on the “OMG! Ovie’s minutes are being mismanaged by Bruce!!!!!!!11” train based on one game.
Pledge Drive 2010-2011: SO KIDS CAN!! Help build a playground
I agree with you on this, I don’t see Semin working very well with on PP2 with 26. We’ve all seen how it doesn’t work when he’s on a line with Chimera.

The Caps awesome shift near the end of the second period that resulted in Ovie’s goal should be required viewing on a regular basis. The most disturbing part of last night’s game was it brought back eerie and uncomfortable memories of the Caps playoff series with the Habs. I had hoped they would have gotten this out of their system by now, but unfortunately Pavelec isn’t the first—and most likely won’t be the last—goale who will face the Caps this season as the second coming of Terry Sawchuk. The Caps better learn to solve this type of goalie if they hope to make a deep playoff run this time around.
My opinion exactly. Hence, I was feeling really down about the Caps chances of advancing past Round 1.
Rocking the Red for the Caps since 1975. Rocking the Red on additional fronts as well.
Do you feel this way about this team’s chances CapsFan75? I go through periods of believing the Caps will go all the way this year, alternating between periods of gloom and doom that they will repeat last season’s early exit. I suppose that means I haven’t decided whether I’m a glass half full or glass half empty type of person. Being a Caps fan can create its own kind of schizophrenia.
That’s about the size of it. I’m so bipolar about the Caps chances this year. On bad days, like yesterday, I fear their chances of advancing are next to nil. On good days, I figure, maybe, well maybe, they’ll advance much further.
Perhaps, schizophrenia is not the right term to use. I’d probably use bipolar. But some of the disappointments over the years can bring out the worse instincts of paranoia.

I’m not into psych terms so I’ll defer to your opinion about bipolar as preferable to schizophrenia CF75. In any case we can agree that the Caps can and often have induced bizarre behavior and paranoia on the part of their fans.
Oh lookee, I updated my profile and it’s shown up in my last few posts. Maybe the Caps will take notice and start playing like they want it so I can finally come down on the side of being a glass half full person.
Very nice! Or should I say wery nice (with a Russian accent)? Or even beary nice, in honor of the Hershey Bears?

On paper the Leafs seem to be the perfect antidote for the Caps to nip their two game losing streak in the bud. However, the Leafs are coming off a hugh SO win over the Bruins and their goalie Tim Thomas. I hope John-Sebastien Giguere doesn’t do a Halak/Pavelec on the Caps.
What is it about these Czech goalies?

Absolutely nothing. Guy had a good game but it was only one game.
Alright, confess-how many goals are you going to make this year?
"I'm not going to tell!"
Well can you at least guarantee fifty?
"No way. I have a different objective. To win."

Sometimes those only one game becomes two or three games, which is what Halak did to the Caps in games 5, 6, and 7 last postseason.
Really! I was unaware of that!
Sarcasm aside I refuse to wring my hands and worry every time a goalie has a good game and steals a game from the Caps. It happens. And it’s early December. And there may still be some trade hangover. There were also good points to take from that game, including one very fine shift and Ovi feeling some relief.
Got to keep wins and losses in perspective.

Don’t think Halak (or any Slovak) would like to be called Czech. And Thomas is from the US. As far as current Czech goalies, you’ve got Vokoun in FLA and this guy:

Right you are. I should have written how much I love our own baby faced Czech goalie. Honestly goalies are going to have good games. Our Neuvy stole a few games himself as I recall.

Should have said goalies from the former nation of Czechoslovakia. Oops.
But agree that Neuvy is such a cute baby faced Czech goalie. (They certainly are training those goalies well in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.)

While I don’t have a twitter account, I’ve been reading some rumors that MP may be back with the Caps for the Toronto game.
Next question, who is sitting out to make room for him? Or is someone hurt that we haven’t heard about yet. (Chimmer got stitches in his mouth for the high sticks he received, without anywhere near the compensatory penalties called against the perpetrators but doubt that he’ll miss any time.)
Also, not surprised that the team is shuffling the lineup for tomorrow. Will DJ King be in the lineup? Given that Toronto is a physical team, it would not surprise me but if Perreault is up, we probably won’t see King.

If MP is up, someone has to be sent down or put on IR. The Caps don’t have a roster space otherwise – 13 forwards, 8 dmen, 2 goalies already.
There is no problem a hammer cannot either fix or make irrelevant.
Erskine to IR, though he says he’s ready to play.

Methinks Oisk will play tomorrow. Poti thinks that he may possibly play but will make up his mind tomorrow. That to me sounds like he’s doubtful. Boudreau would probably prefer to wait and dress Poti when he’s more ready.

if someone is going on IR, my money is on Wonky Groin, Sr.

With a new veteran D-man in the lineup, it makes sense that Poti could take the time off to heal properly without him or BB thinking that the team is too weak on the blue line without him.
