I don’t think so. But he probably has the worst current contract on the team.

Performance vs contract expectations can turn people against a player. Stecks has been playing better of late, but I’m sure plenty would rather see him traded and Perreault brought up.

No doubt.

Agreed.

I’m not sure they’re related, but I’d certainly be in favor of the former.

It sure seems like some Avs fans lacked appreciation for Hannan’s style of play in light of what he was paid.
"I don't care about winning the division or winning the President's Trophy. I just care about getting to the playoffs." --GMGM
Well the 18 a night is this year and for the last few he’s been up around 20 and one of their best D so how much can you really complain? He’s one of the few that wasn’t slaughtered by SJS.

Poti’s isn’t worse? Extending a (now) 5/6 Dman who’s often injured for 2 years and paying him around $3M a year seems worse to me.
And Movember heroics aside, I don’t think anyone here considered Erskine worth $1.25M a year.
And what about Sloan.
Now if we’re talking length of the contract – I can see the point, but it’s not like $1.1M is going to tie GMGM’s hands nor is it unmovable. But Steckel’s skillset and stats are comparable to Gaustad’s in Buffalo and his contract is much worse. Steckel is durable, in his prime, and you know what you are going to get with him.
by Gin and Tonic on Dec 2, 2010 8:29 AM EST up reply actions
Ah, but I said current contract – Pot’s deal that you reference doesn’t kick in until next July.
Erskine’s isn’t worse because of term; Sloan’s isn’t worse because of dollars and term.
And just because we know what we’re getting with Stecks doesn’t mean what we’re getting is worth $1.1m for two more seasons after this one. Not to mention the fact that $1.1m very definitely could tie GMGM’s hands and Steckel could be hard to move because he has a bad contract. I mean, it’s not “epic fail” bad, but I still think it’s the worst contract on the team presently.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Poti’s extension looks worse every day. If Hannan is the guy GMGM has been looking 3-4 years for, and he plays well this season, the Caps will have too $$$ locked up in our current D corps to re-sign him. I guess we’ll see how it goes, but at the moment, it looks like Poti could’ve been had for a song AFTER this season.
there was no way to know Poti was going to be this injured. We all knew about the wonky groin, but I think even the most pessimistic among of us didn’t expect this.
Pledge Drive 2010-2011: SO KIDS CAN!! Help build a playground
Nobody can predict injuries, but he’s an older defenseman with diminishing talents. For a player like Poti (coming off a terrible postseason, IMO), giving him two years was a big mistake for his year 34 and 35 seasons.
really, terrible postseason? I thought his play was unusually good in the post season, right up until he nearly lost his eye.

I’ll admit as a bystander, I am amused every time I see one of the school name tossing threads start up again. I have a good memory, but haven’t registered where anyone went other than JP, so always amusing to read these.
He went to Colgate, which is what I’ve been trying to bait him into saying, so that I could unleash a torrent of smack.
It seems he figured it out, which is what happens when you cross swords with smart guys.

Yeah. Adopted from Africa by a couple of professors and then he grew up in Hamilton (good thing his baseline was Africa) and went to Colgate and then bounced around the NBA. He was before my time. That Falcons safety that got arrested for solicitation also went to Colgate. I mostly just care about the hockey stuff, though.

Erskine at $1.25MM is not a bad deal for a 7D. Only a few hundred grand more than a Hershey replacement, and I think we can all agree he’s quite a bit better than Fahey.
Poti… Well, you pay through the nose for average veteran defensemen in this league. That’s just how it is.
Sloan hurts right now. His and Steckel’s are the two contracts I think I would most like to see go away.
You had me at no problem.
Erskine at $1.25MM is not a bad deal for a 7D.
When 4/5/6 guys like Mottau (800K) and Salei (1.1m) are available for less, it’s a bad contract. It’s not currently the worst on the team, because paying a one-trick pony 4th-liner $1.1m over several years is worse. But that’s still a terrible contract.
And I hear you talk the talk, but I don't see you walk the walk and I still don't believe a thing you say.

It’s because all he cares about are personal achievements and he knows he has a chance to set the record for the most assists in a season by a LW. No other way to explain the risky pass (who knows if the puck skips, Backstrom falls down or pulls a Patrik Stefan, etc.) versus just shooting on the gaping goal.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
He’s just sick of scoring because every time he wins a trophy he has to go to friggin’ Ikea, which reminds him of how much better Backstrom’s country is doing financially than his own.

Yo gotta hand it to whoever that was covering Ovechkin at that point though. He tried his darndest to stop that pass and almost did. If it was any other pair of players other than a superstar tandem that pass would have gotten blocked or botched.
On the Blues broadcast and again on On The Fly, the focus was not on Ovie not scoring again, but on his pass. And they didn’t comment on his unselfishness, but on the quality of the pass as he squeezed around the D laying in front of him and made a perfect dish to Backstrom.
I’d like to think the media is coming around to point out that the Caps are winning with better D and secondary scoring.

That being said, the one that always gets me is the comment that Green is getting better at defense. This comment almost always follows something along the lines of, “His offensive numbers aren’t looking as high as they once were.” Unfortunately, the commentators are somewhat remiss, in that they forget that Green has played quite a few games less than the other leading point candidates

I like Panger, but, yeah, he did refer to David Neuvirth. He got the Noy-virt part correct though. He’s still a fun guy to have call a game.
The PxP guy got a little tiresome in that every Blues shot drew “AND A DRIIIVE…” even if it ended up going wide by 6 feet. But all in all, they did a nice job, had obviously done their homework, knew the Caps players and a bit about them, where they were from, who they played Junior with, etc.
No obnoxious homerism, either, while still being Blues guys.

I know Sid’s having a great season
As we consider the player named Sidney Crosby as he tears into the second quarter of the NHL season, we wonder aloud what it was like to cover Albert Einstein or Leonardo da Vinci or Thomas Edison in their prime.
Did reporters write that Einstein’s big brain was working overtime?
Did they write that da Vinci was painting like an artist using two brushes?
Did they write that Edison was inventing like a demon?
Were there moments within the accepted framework of greatness that demanded further boundaries be established to adequately consider such greatness? Were there times when plain old “great” just didn’t cut it?

First The Crosby made heaven & earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep; and the Spirit of The Crosby was moving over the face of the waters. And The Crosby said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. And The Crosby saw that the light was good; and The Crosby separated the light from the darkness. The Crosby called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, one day

If that article is creeping you out, be prepared to be totally freaked once the NHL starts its push towards the Winter Classic. Bylsma has already gushed that viewers are going to love Crosby after the HBO special and I can only imagine how the NHL Network will be portraying his Godliness for the two weeks leading up to the game.
It’s HBO. Expect a lot of locker room shots of Sid in a towel being all aw, shucksy.
There's always more to learn about Hockey.
On BL21’s interview with 1067TheFan this week, he mentioned how there would be “a couple of guys” on the Pens team that would be acting out as camera hogs on the upcoming HBO show. One of the interviewers assumed Crosby (probably the only one they know of), but he said it wasn’t him he was thinking about. I’d assume Talbot was one of them. Maybe Cooke’s the other??

I actually thought in the preview he sounded relatively interesting – he’s not a character like Ovi or Brooks or (ugh) Talbot but I liked hearing him talk about playing outdoors as a kid. Maybe he’ll let his guard down for this thing and we’ll get to see more of the “real” him.
You know, like this side.
If anyone needs me, I'll be at Kettler.
I don’t necessarily feel bad for him. He’s making a great living doing what he loves to do and has been wildly successful at doing it. He knew what kind of attention was coming his way when he came into the League. Honeslty, if he didn’t want all the attention, he wasn’t being forced to play hockey. I view attention like this as part of the downside of being not quite the highest-paid player in the NHL.
Just trying to capture the spirit of the thing...
Honeslty, if he didn’t want all the attention, he wasn’t being forced to play hockey.
Well, of course. And I’m sure the joy he derives from playing far outweigh the negatives (by approximately 8.7 million per year). But given his choice, I’m sure he’d rather just play hockey than be treated like Justin Bieber.

In 2007-2008 Alex Ovechkin had a season that was quite literally “for the ages,” having set a record for goals by a left wing and, given the era, perhaps the most dominating goal scoring season in the history of the sport — certainly by a player not named “Gretzky.” And in the end, what did he have for it? Four trophies and a first round playoff exit.
Sidney Crosby is on a pace for a 57-73-130 season. You could argue, given the era, that such a season would rank among the most productive in NHL history (although his being on a pace for a plus-minus less than half what Ovechkin put up last year while missing ten games, plus the fact that he is 30th among forwards for highest goals scored against/on ice (Ovechkin is 86th) makes me wonder a bit).
But like Ovechkin in 2008, Crosby has a problem in 2011. That team around him isn’t really all that good, certainly not as good as the roster in Philadelphia or in Washington. Truth be told, the inconsistency of Marc-Andre Fleury makes it a near certainty that it is his performance — not Crosby’s — that will determine just how far the Penguins go in the spring. If Fleury has a spring time that looks like November, the Penguins can go far. If he has one that looks like October, one and done looks more likely.

And the difference to the media, right or wrong, is that Crosby is a winner and a leader that can overcome these problems.
Ovechkin hasn’t shown he can do that, so the Caps will carry the repeated moniker of not having enough defense and having suspect goalies. Right now, I think I would take Varly and Neuvy over Fleury and Johnson. We’ll see how the season progresses.
Put differently, the Pens are good until proven otherwise. The Caps are not as good until proven otherwise.

Well, other than the NYR series, I think Ovechkin has been the Caps’ best player in every series they’ve played since he’s been on the team.

Agreed – I was referring specifically to the MTL series (should’ve clarified that).
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Ah, that makes more sense. Your point is well taken, though, and I think it actually applies to most of the Caps’ other playoff series with Ovechkin.
In the Philly series, Ovechkin really didn’t heat up until the series was several games old. In the NYR series, Varlamov was the Caps’ best player. In the Pittsburgh series, there’s the oft-cited missed breakaway against MAF in the opening minutes of game 7. I think it’s fair to say that Ovechkin hasn’t been quite as good in the playoffs as his numbers indicate, but I think the same can be said of Crosby. People tend to forget that he didn’t play particularly well during the second half of the Pens’ recent Cup run.

Pledge Drive 2010-2011: SO KIDS CAN!! Help build a playground
I think the Pens roster is better than you’re giving them credit for; that D corps is very, very solid and while they lack wingers, they have three centers who are extremely high quality when Staal comes back. They forecheck like demons and hem opponents in their own zone for long stretches of time. They’ve been one of the best shot-differential teams in the league minus their third best skater.
The point about MAF is true of basically all goalies for playoff teams. If the goalie plays to a .930 sv% for a few weeks in April and May, the team will go far, almost regardless of whether they’re skating well or not.

The solidity of that D is helped by Letang playing out of his ever loving mind. I don’t think theirs is any better than Philadelphia’s.
Philly’s D is clearly better, but this is the second season in a row that Letang has put up dominating possession stats. He’s getting more prime ice now that Gonchar is out of the equation, so seeing his boxcars jump doesn’t really surprise me. PIT really hit on that 3rd round selection, I just hope Depres doesn’t turn out so well.

I’m not even convinced Pittsburgh’s defense is that much better than the Caps’. A little, yeah, but if Hannan pans out, then Washington’s problem probably isn’t going to be defense. If anything, WSH’s is deeper at the moment, not having to roll out Goligoski or Engelland.
Hannan is a massive upgrade for Washington’s blueline, which is now a source of considerable strength when everyone is healthy. There are going to be two 2nd-pairing caliber players getting 3rd pairing assignments on any given night — that’s a huge deal. Goligoski is a pretty good offensive D-man, while he’s not great in his own end, he’s pretty dangerous when the Pens have the puck. Which is a lot.
The Pens don’t have anyone of Green’s caliber, but I’d say that whichever of Letang, Martin, or Michalek you choose as their 3rd best D is better than Poti, Schultz, Hannan, or Carlson at the moment. Alzner is a much better 6D than Engellend, though.
When they’re healthy, I actually think the bluelines are close to a push between WSH and PIT, while PHI is significantly better than both.
Washington did a lot to close the gap between the top two contenders in the East (PIT/PHI) and themselves. I’m feeling much better about a playoff series between the Caps and either of them today than I was when I woke up two days ago. That trade is huge.

I agree with you (as usual), but I still think (dead horse, I know) that in a series against Philly or Pittsburgh, the Caps are hosed. Backstrom/Johansson/Gordon/Hendricks will get destroyed against Crosby/Malkin/Staal/Talbot or Richards/Giroux/Briere/x.
I’m not even sure that Boston’s pivot depth isn’t better than the Caps’.
I don’t follow your logic. Are you saying that any team that has better depth at C will beat the Caps?

True, but that’s not really the point. The point is Fleury’s inconsistency. If a goalie is hitting that .930 mark in the late spring, chances are he has had some consistency before that in his save percentage (he’s not going to have many months in which it was .863, as was Fleury’s in October — Michael Leighton didn’t have a month below .906 after joining the Flyers last season, and that is the comparison, not his play with the woebegone Hurricanes). Did Fleury merely get off to a slow start, or is he on the high side of a roller coaster trend?
If you've read this far...seek help.
You’re not going to find a Fleury defender in this poster, but Michael Leighton played significantly over his head until the Cup Finals, where he reverted to form at the worst possible time. Goalies go up, goalies go down, it’s hard to predict which ones are going to give you the play you need in the springtime.
I’ll put it another way — I’d lay money on MAF to give the Pens acceptable goaltending before I’d lay money on Leighton at the same odds. Like, way before.

I agree… the Pens roster, while not as good as the Cup winners in 2009 is still pretty damn formidable. Crosby is outstanding, Malkin when he is on is terrific, Letang is emerging as a pretty good offensive D-man. Dupuis is quick and deceptively effective, Kunitz has taken his game a step forward as well. This is not a bad team and they will likely get past round 1 of the playoffs. Then it gets tough as they’ll have to likely play a better team in the second round (Caps, Flyers, Bruins) and that’s where their run may end in 2011.

This is a very good team. They’re a legitimate Cup threat this season and probably the next few; the core of Crosby/Malkin/Staal/Letang/Martin/Michalek/Fleury is going to contend. Shero’s done an excellent job at adding role-players that work well in the PIT system (damn his eyes). Would I be shocked if they didn’t win one in that window? Not a bit, there’s a handful of other really good teams out there (Caps, Hawks, Canucks, Bruins, Sharks, Wings, Flyers, Blues, Kings all have real windows over that time period, to varying degrees) and only one Cup to go around in a season.
It’s gonna be tough every year; that’s why the playoffs are so enthralling, I think.

i actually expected the caps’ forbes ranking to take a much more dramatic jump with leonsis’ acquisition of the arena rights. am i missing something?
I expected the same, but I guess the losses last year offset it some? I’m sure Ted will comment on what a joke those valuations are.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Actually, when I looked at the Forbes ratings, I was a bit surprised. I, too, thought the Caps would be much higher on the list, especially with the acquisition of the arena rights. That being said, Leonsis is putting alot of money down on sed acquisition the newer developments the arena is seeing.
The business of hockey is certainly not a short term thing, seeing a 1-year turn around on a franchise is pretty unlikely. That being said, I don’t exactly trust all of the metrics they use to rate the net worth and such a of a franchise; and, in a few years, that number will most definitely increase
Soon the Championship with be ours, all ours!
You would think the Caps would get increased revenue from board ads, club seats and concessions, which they didn’t get much of under the previous lease. However, just because Ted owns the whole ball of wax, doesn’t necessarily mean the Caps have a new lease or additional revenue streams.
Its of interest because team revenues have an impact on the salary cap. So conceivably the more revenue the Caps generate the greater potential for the salary cap to increase. Not to mention the impact on revenue sharing (hi Damian). Ted may be incented to keep the Caps revenue down.
Also, if the Caps are equal partners in sharing the revenues from the building, no doubt they probably share in the debt service (vs. just being a rent paying tenant). We’ll never know the true economics of the deal.
Just trying to capture the spirit of the thing...
Yeah, I was going to say this, Ted owning the whole thing may not translate into better revenue for the Caps themselves just yet and I’m not about to wade into the HRR part of the CBA.
This sig is brought to you by... Frungy, The Sport of Kings!
That’s probably right. The Forbes ranking probably considers the Caps alone. Ted needs to show some synergy between the three teams and the arena to drive the value up of the Caps alone.

Prospects/Mitchell
I followed the link to the Mitchell blog entry – “Once Mitchell ages out of the CHL this coming spring,…”
Note: Mitchell does not age out of the CHL this coming spring. He’s a 1991 and he will be eligible to play in the CHL next season as an overager.
More relevant is the question as to whether he’s signed by the Capitals this summer before rights expire. At this time, I’d say it’s questionable that he is signed by the Capitals; same for Dunn especially with Grubauer and Anderson already under contract. Just guesses on my part based on following the Caps and prospects, other than a couple of SCSU games on tv, I haven’t seen either play since summer camp.
Unsigned Caps’ prospects with Caps’ rights expiring this summer are:
- Mitchell, Garrett, RW, 19yo (Sep 91), WHL; rights until June 1, 2011; 09 draft
- Flemming, Brett, D, 19yo (Feb 91), OHL; rights until June 1, 2011; 09 draft
- DeSimone, Phil, C, 23yo (Mar 87), NCAA, rights until August 15, 2011; 07 draft
- Dunn, Dan, G, 22yo (Jun 88), NCAA, rights until August 15, 2011; 07 draft
Three CHL Prospects, Eakin, Grubauer, and Anderson, are already signed to their ELCs.

I can’t even remember the last time a goalie had a concussion from a puck hitting the mask. Pavlec is the only goalie I can think of having a concussion in the past year and he got it from passing out then falling on the ice.
The pro masks are bullet proof. Only place I’d be worried about taking a shot in those would be the back of the head or the ears.
Think twice before you speak, and then you may be able to say something more insulting than if you spoke right out at once.
A goalie got concussed and had to miss a start because he took a shot off the side of the mask in warm ups. It’s safer if you get it square, for sure, but I wouldn’t want to put my head in front of an NHL shot regardless.
And that’s not Varly’s normal stance.

Ovechkin out at the point with a pass first, shoot second mindset makes all the difference in the world. People cheat so hard toward Ovechkin on defense that him doing anything other than attracting a crowd is going to end up with a low percentage scoring chance at best. Until people get tired of being burned by Backstrom and Semin they should utilize Ovechkin as bizarro paper tiger as they are now.

it’s been amusing to watch this season. “Hey, let’s set 2-3 guys on Ovechkin! That’ll keep the Caps from scoring!” Ovie’s ability to connect passes to open teammates when he has 400+ pounds of hockey play draped on him is quite impressive.

also impressive was the no call when Ovie got his stick slashed out of his hands last night

I just don’t know how no one saw that, especially since Ovie had the puck at the time

I didn’t see a replay, but I thought it was possible that the Blues player (McClement? Crombeen?) tied him up ans was wrestling for the puck and just ended up levering the stick out of AO’s hands, rather than slashing it?

And then a few minutes later Green getting a penalty for the same thing just because the stick happened to break.

If there’s one thing that the NHL officiating has done relatively consistantly, it’s punish the result more than intent, so this doesn’t surprise me.
Eat, drink, and be merry! And then drink some more.
The weird thing is that slashing a stick out of someone’s hand is a result that is just as likely to draw a penalty as a broken stick. Caps got hosed with that pretty badly in one game in the last series against the Pens.

A couple times. I swear Kunitz was holding his stick with no strength just to draw calls. I don’t personally like it when refs call a PIM just because a stick is knocked out of a guy’s hand, but given that it’s almost a reflexive call now I don’t understand how STL didn’t get called.

Caps last visit to Dallas - Washington at Dallas October 25, 2008
Here’s hoping tonight’s game isn’t like the whacky back and forth game from a little over 2 years ago; although the GWG in OT by Semin was nice
- Tyler Sloan returns to the scene of his first NHL goal, perhaps as a scratch
- Also happened to be the game when Sean Avery scored his first goal as a Dallas Star, 1 of 3 as a Star
- Crazy thinking back to that game and the goal scorers and players from that night, so I pulled the boxscore
- 1/2 the players no longer with the Capitals – the goalies were Theodore and Johnson, Fedorov and Fleischmann with 2 goals apiece, Nylander with a multipoint game, etc.
4D remaining: Erskine, Green, Schultz, Sloan
6F remaining: Backstrom, Bradley, BGordon, Laich, Ovechkin, Semin

That was a game the Caps controlled, could have dominated, yet allowed to become a back-and-forth affair that went to overtime. It was against a lesser Dallas team that appears improved based on the standings.
I always go to the Caps games in Dallas, but I just got back from Thanksgiving up there and have missed work with the sickness this week. So after looking fwd to this game since the schedule came out, I will be passing on it. Sadness.
Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins championships. - Michael Jordan
By the way, anyone notice who was the extra man on for the “Too Many Men” penalty that resulted in the powerplay that got the Caps their first goal? Andy McDonald. Just a stupid, stupid, stupid penalty. One has to wonder about the quality of his college education. Really.

Trolling around a bit on the Web between meetings. Went over to the SI.com NHL page and these are quotes that I see.
1. Cover Story
Whiner. Diver. Dirty. Sidney Crosby’s critics find a lot to dislike about the NHL’s Chosen One. But Stu Hackel says haters are missing Crosby’s mastery at doing whatever it takes to win.
Clicked over to the article where Hackel writes in his concluding paragraph:
Our allegiances to one team or another cause us to react emotionally about certain guys and how they play the game. In one sense, that’s as it should be. But to lose sight of the abundant skills that Crosby brings to the rink and to fixate on his indiscretions will shortchange your ability to appreciate a masterful player.
It would be nice to see that written about Ovechkin, wouldn’t it?
2. The rankings tag line
Caps rule, but Penguins are looking like a champion
With my biased hat on, the second quote is more frustrating. Cazenueve elevates the Caps to #1, but they juxtaposition of that Penguins descriptions intimates that the Caps don’t look like a champion.

Maybe, no, no, no, no, maybe and no.
The Canes don’t have a horrible roster, and Ward could get hot while NYR and ATL get cold.
The Devils can’t be as bad as they’ve played thus far, and they’re only 10 points out…my gut tells me they’ve got the potential to get hot.
The rest is dreck.
Specifically on ATL, we’ll see what happens when a couple guys cool off. They’ve made a nice run lately, and I picked them as a dark horse playoff team (this year and last) but I can also see them finishing in that 9 or 10 slot.

I would dearly love to see 3 teams from the SE make it, so I hope you’re right.
I do think that at least one team currently in the top 8 will finish out of the playoffs, and one team currently on the outside will make it.
My best guess for the team that chokes it is the Rags. Not believing in them at all, given Gabo’s injury history and the plumbers that fill out the rest of the roster.
As for the team that climbs into it, I think it might be the NJD sneaking in.

Washington and Tampa Bay are locks, no? I don’t think Carolina has it in them (they are very thin everywhere) and Atlanta has a very good chance, mostly due to New Jersey falling off a cliff.

I don’t mean to jump on you, but this is precisely the sort of thing that causes people to totally disregard Corsi and scoring-chance analysis. I haven’t watched much of Florida this year, but I can tell from the guys on that team and what I saw of them last year that they’re just not very good.
Corsi/scoring chances is all well and good, but eventually you’ve got to have the skill to put the puck in the net, and Florida has always, always lacked that skill.
And I hear you talk the talk, but I don't see you walk the walk and I still don't believe a thing you say.

meh, Chicago need to unload a ton of salary. Buff for some reason is one hell of a defenseman for what Atlanta needs out of one. Even though he pulled that stunt against Neuvirth I still sort of root for him because the Thrashers desperately need some love from the public. As far as being upset as to who left, I’d be more upset about Ladd leaving. If the Caps weren’t so stacked with wingers I wouldn’t have minded seeing him in (Caps) red.

Couple more points.
Byfuglien’s career shooting pct is 8.8%. But note that he racked up a considerable amount of that as a F.
His shooting pct this year is 9.8% as a D. That’s an 11% increase while moving to a position that typically shoots at ~50% loser than forwards. If you “adjust” by that admittedly rough factor, it’s like a forward shooting 19.6%.
He has a ton of shots (102 – the most of any D in the league), and by far the highest shooting percentage of the high shot total guys. As a point of reference, the next highest guy in shots is Chara, with 78, and he’s shooting 5.1%.
This all screams “anomaly” to me, no?
Patron saint of quality footwear.
Also, he wasn’t a very good defenseman when he was in Chicago. He was moved to forward for a reason. Somehow (better coaching? maturity?) he’s become a much better guy back there in Atlanta than he ever was in Chicago.
change of scenery? amazing what it can do for a guy.

George Carlin has a great routine about use of the English language. He points out that baseball announcers can say : “Jeter has two ball in the count.” However, they can’t say “Wow, that pitch just bounced and hit him in the balls.”

Fair enough, but I have no recollection of anything 8 days after my birth. I’d remember if it happened when I was 13.

Poor Tom :(
But as unsurprising as it is that the injury was groinal (…:D), it’s good news that it’s not as bad as it could have been. And actually for someone like Poti I’d prefer he didn’t play back-to-back games anyway. Precaution = good.
If anyone needs me, I'll be at Kettler.
Don’t be so sure it’s good news. I think the only person who said it’s not that bad was Bruce, the same fellow who said Varly would be off the ice for a few days back at the start of the season.

Bummer. I can’t believe all we have to put in the lineup is Fahey. Shit. Sloan would be better.
What? Oh, thank god. Way to go GMGM, and welcome to the Caps, Scott Hannan.

To be honest? We’ve got the points cushion, let’s play Fahey (shudder) and Sloan and let some of our battered top D-men rest a bit. Especially against a WC opponent. And especially with a groin injury. Those just keep coming back unless completely and totally healed.

We don’t need Fahey! We can play Sloan and Erskine and still rest both Green and Poti! It will never happen though.

True, but if I had the choice between sucking up and playing Fahey a few times or running Green and Poti into the ground, I’ll take the former. Just saying.

Not very constructive, or realistic. Carlznerson aren’t going anywhere, and they seem to think they have to replace Richards’ contributions in a trade. I guess that is understandable, but if they are moving Richards at all it’s because they are out of the playoffs, in which case they don’t need to replace anything. In fact, if they move Richards it’s better to just tank and pray for a lottery (though the East and the Oilers are going to make that near impossible for DAL).

Depends. If Lehtonen gets hurt again and one of Benn, Neal or Eriksson gets hurt, they can make a real run at the bottom of the standings, given how strong the West is.
But yeah. If Richards is going anywhere, then it’s because they’re already cooked. Worst case scenario for them is that they hover just outside the playoff bubble and don’t make it. Entirely possible, the West is a lot better than the East this season.

Exactly.
There’s no way he’s being traded if the Stars are in the playoff picture.
Besides…and I’ve tried to tell this to people….the Stars aren’t going to get as good of value as they’d like. Not for an extremely expensive rental player.
Plus, I’m pretty sure 85% of all that was very tongue in cheek.

Yeah, it didn’t seem serious. I’m sure those guys knew that AO and Backstrom weren’t going to be realistic. I think the Carlznerson stuff might have been, but it’s moot. While DAL is playing well they aren’t even going to entertain offers.

Per the team, the Caps have signed defensive prospect Brett Flemming to a 3 year ELC. He was drafted 145th overall (5th rd) in 2009.
More regarding Richards
From another Stars blog.
[…]after watching the telecast of the Stars-Hurricanes Monday night, extraordinary Stars reporter Mike Heika made an appearance and was asked about Brad Richards and whether or not Richards would stay with Dallas. His answer was roughly “nearly impossible to keep him with Dallas,” so that’s a cause of concern. He’s the team’s leading point-getter who makes everyone around him better. What Heika explained in detail though, is that it will be pretty tough to resign Richards if the ownership situation isn’t figured out by the time contract talks need to be concluded.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
I heard Richards on the radio a week or two ago and the way he was talking, it really sounded like he’s planning on not being in Dallas after the deadline – he said he’s had conversations w/ Nieuwendyk already (although he wouldn’t reveal what was said in them) and talked about the unstable leadership, the rough travel in the West, etc.
Obviously this is just one person’s opinion, so if anyone else was listening and got a different vibe, please way in. To me, however, it sounds like Richie wants to head back to the East.
If anyone needs me, I'll be at Kettler.
Meh… If Dallas is looking like a serious contender in February, it would be very hard trade Richards. Fans would not like that.
Then again, it’s hard to lose an asset like that for nothing if they wind up missing the playoffs, or flaming out in the 1st round. Just ask Florida. Who’s to say? All I know is, the price would be steep indeed. The best we could offer is probably, as other have suggested, Fehr + 1st rounder + a prospect or two.
You had me at no problem.
Here is how I see it.
The fact is that Brad loves living in Dallas. He’s the most important player on this team and he’s finally taking control of that locker room. He’s leading this team now and he’s setting the tone offensively for the entire roster.
He also wants stability. If he signs long term with the Stars, he wants to know this franchise has the ability to build a consistently successful team. Right now, that is all up in the air. That’s the main issue.
Unless there’s a new owner in place soon, then there’s not even a guarantee the Stars can actually afford him. Nieuwendyk has back loaded several contracts and the payroll of he Stars is going to increase next season as it is.
This doesn’t mean a trade is inevitable.
For one, Richards has a full NTC. It’s going to be tough to coordinate a suitable return from a team Richards approves.
But if the Stars are staring the playoffs in the face, he’s not going to be traded. I can promise you that Nieuwendyk will home on to him and bet on new ownership or approved higher payroll prior to free agency. The Stars need to make the postseason this year and there’s no way Richards offensive production will be replaced in a trade.
I don’t think a trade is likely. Losing him to FA is a distinct possibility.

Makes sense. Just sounded like he didn’t sound too optimistic given the ownership situation, but he was very positive about the team and the city in general – I think if he does end up getting traded or leaving via FA it won’t be because he’s just dying to get out (a la Kovalchuk).
That NTC is a killer, though, you’re right. Any team that wants him knows that he’ll probably be hitting the UFA market and can be acquired without giving up assets – other than a boatload of money, of course – so the odds of him wanting to go to a team and that team making Dallas an offer rich enough to get him are probably pretty slim.
That being said…if a team is desperate enough for him and thinks he’s the final piece to their Cup hopes this year rather than down the line, they might be willing to make the Stars an offer they can’t refuse. It’ll be interesting to see where the Stars end up by the deadline (although you guys are doing really well, it might have to be an insanely lopsided deal to pry him away if the Stars keep this up!).
Eh. I’d love him here but I don’t want GMGM to mortgage the farm for him if other true 2C options can be pursued for less. Plus I like the Stars, I want them to do well in the playoffs.

For the prospect geeks here’s a list of Sweden’s World Juniors squad.
It’s a 30 name list so seven players won’t make the squad.
The big names are obviously included like Adam Larsson, Ludvig Rensfeldt, Robin Lehner, Gabriel Landeskog, Anton Lander and Calle Järnkrok (Yay!)
Personally I’m really excited to see how Jonas Brodin will do a young d- man that plays for Marcus team Färjestad.
Nicklas Swedish club Brynäs continues to produce an inpressive number of good young player’s – they have five players on the list.
