Haha, don’t think I can say it better than the comment section over there.
Boy, it is hard to understand why the NHL isn’t more popular. Here are its two greatest stars. One is a mumbling homeless person, the other delievers his lines like Corbin Bernsen’s Roger Dorn during the Amex commercial in Major League. God almighty.
Nice perspective numbers from Peerless.
After a few of the last games and the inside knowledge that Bruce is making some changes to the system have me feeling a bit better about the next few months. I’m starting to think we may see a bit of a different Caps team.
This next game should be really good. The Caps have so much riding on this as far as a regular season game goes. Rags rematch + 24/7 embarrassment + slump busting + Ovi is probably dying to score for HBO. Oh, and they are getting paid to play hockey.
Think twice before you speak, and then you may be able to say something more insulting than if you spoke right out at once.
In honor of their appearance on “The Price is Right”, a local radio station, WBIG, was having a contest called “The Ice is Right” where the contestants would guess the over/under for prices of catalog items and the winners would win tickets for an upcoming Caps game. WBIG has been giving away Caps tickets as their prize this week.

I feel like the team will turn the corner soon, on the theory that you know a streak is ending when the results belie the flow of the game. When you win a game you should have lost, a winning streak is on its last legs; and the Caps really played well enough to win against ANA, so I feel like Boston or Ottawa will fall over the weekend.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
I was more referring to the “different team” aspect. I’ve said from day one of this losing streak that I don’t want them to start winning until they start playing a different game. I couldn’t watch the Wed game, but from what I’ve heard and based on the “inside knowledge” zephyr was talking about…I’d like to believe that changes are actually in the works.

We already saw a slightly different Caps team against the Ducks. I want to see the differences with the normal finishing and I will be a happy man.

Normal finishing as in blowing other teams away 6-2 like the 2009-10 Caps or normal finishing as in capitalizing on those chances where lady luck random fluctuation rewards them with goals rather dented iron?

Both. More hard work will create a higher volume of prime scoring chances, but it will not continue where this team will be ringing the iron or goalies getting lucky with pucks hitting their sticks on the scoring chances they are already creating. Eventually a losing streak like this was going to happen. Eventually stuff goes wrong for an extended period of time…all part of random fluctuation ;)

While it’s not a part of this mornings Clips, guys on the team have been compared to Harry Potter characters. Yesterday, I learned that Marcus Johansson’s line in Sweden was known as the Harry Potter line since he was considered to resemble Harry Potter.

I learned that Marcus Johansson’s line in Sweden was known as the Harry Potter line
Just to clarify: He played with Henrik Björklund and Gustaf Thorell for a couple of games in 2008 on what at the time was known as the Harry potter line a name that Richard Wallin gave them btw. But they didn’t play a lot of games togehter so it’s not a “line” in “Legion of Doom” or “the army line” kind of way.

I will admit you’re much more of an expert in Swedish hockey then I. I had done a search on the Harry Potter line and used some of the listed terms but hadn’t learned the entire time frame of that line combination but did find one nice pic of the trio. Johansson’s hair was pretty long in those days.

From the Pensblog review of 24/7:
We will mention, however, that everything we assumed about Bruce Boudreau is 100% correct.
His obsession with the Penguins is ridiculous.
Um, I think he mentions the Pens once in a reference to the HBO cameras being there. Obsessed? I’d say the fact that they are even mentioning that suggests a bit of obsession over there.
I mean, if we are going to take one line from that show and extrapolate it to determine someones personality, we could conclude that Max Talbott likes to punch children and views Santa as nothing more than a pimp.

I find that, in general, fans on both sides of this rivalry are obsessed with discussing how obsessed members of the other side’s organization and fanbase are with members of their side’s organization and fanbase.
Now we can obsess about how obsessed they are with how obsessed Bruce is.

They weren’t even playing the penguins!
"Semin had two goals this year, Perreault comes in and he gets three."
ZOMG!
And when Bruce referenced them in the context of the HBO project, he could have easily named any of the other teams HBO is covering, but he didn’t. Ob. Sessed.

And he had sauce on his face hahaha wtf
"Semin had two goals this year, Perreault comes in and he gets three."
It was penguin blood. He is so obsessed with them he bit the head off a live penguin to motivate the team. I heard it tasted like a cross between Florida Panther, Atlanta thrasher, and a Philly cheesesteak smothered in Buffalo sauce.

Beg to differ. When Fleury called Talbot a “douche” that was a direct reference to what Talbot called Ovechkin. Obviously the Penguins are totally obsessed with the Caps, even when they’re winning.
was it really a reference to that? Maybe Talbot is the type to call all sorts of guys douches all the time, so Fleury was just returning the favor and that’s why the guys all found it funny.

OMG you guys, check out this stat: With Scott Hannan in the lineup the Caps are 0-7, but Flash has scored 25 points in that same time. Conclusion: BLOW IT UP!!!
The Kolzilla PR department has advised me to post a link to my work at Inside Hockey, so here it is.

Just to point out the obvious: I saw that stat somewhere yesterday (probably here), and I thought to myself, “man that kind of sucks.” But, then I came to my senses and realized that Flash is a good player, and with the right team and playing on the right wing he would be a great asset. But, we made our bed and at least we have someone on D that is better than Sloan and we don’t have to deal with Flash’s bloated salary (yes I realize Hannon’s cap hit is more than Flash’s, but he is probably worth more to this team than Flash).
"Hey, atta dinnin stick a who!"

I did catch that piece but it’s also true, when you root for the O’s too the rest of the AL East provide much better games to watch. I’ll be curious to see where they bat him in their lineup as well. Still an obvious upgrade, but I think the Nats might actually get more bang for the buck (even if the buck is still too high).

Carl Crawford is the best base stealer since Ricky Henderson, will hit 20 HR a year and is in the prime of his career.

The Kolzilla PR department has advised me to post a link to my work at Inside Hockey, so here it is.

Yea…but Crawford is an outstanding player because of the combination of bat and glove. Who needs defense in left field at Fenway? His bat alone is not worth 20 mil per year.
Werth was the number 6 hitter in a lineup with Chase Utley and Ryan Howard.

Perhaps already covered, if so, appologies, head cold meds have me looped…

A lot of people speculated that Dubie’s positive comments about Ovie and the fight after the game were a not so subtle dig directed at Crosby, but during warmups 24/7 caught a bit of convo between them of Dubie playfully telling Ovie he needs to grow the beard back and Ovie responding pleasantly. Possibly those two just respect each other.

Bad ass. From Caps Today:
Classic preview – The Capitals will look a little old school at today’s Kettler Capitals Iceplex practice, as they break in new equipment to be worn in the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic on New Year’s Day. Among the gear on display are new masks for the team’s two goaltenders, red helmets and red pants with white and blue stars down the sides. Each player’s gloves are new as well, to match the color scheme of the old-school jerseys.

Bondra, Pivonka, and Cote make up a staggering percentage of those Caps numbers.
"Semin had two goals this year, Perreault comes in and he gets three."
May be worth breaking them down by actual playing time with their teams for the extremely bored. Coffey had 1400+ games, a little more than 300 with the Pens, Trottier had almost 1300 games and just more than 150 with the Pens.

And it really doesn’t much apply here. You’re not getting “Pittsburgh” Paul Coffey, you’re getting “Paul Coffey.” Even if his Penguin stay wasn’t as productive as his Edmonton stay, his body of work is what is compared here to the body of work of any defenseman you care to name for the Caps (including “Hartford” Sylvain Cote).

Happy Birthday Dave Poulin
As blasphemous as it may sound coming from one who watched hockey during the Caps’ Patrick Division rivalry days of the 80s, but Dave Poulin was always a favourite player of mine even if he did play with the Flyers.
Poulin played his junior hockey at Notre Dame but was never drafted and played a year in Sweden while working internationally for Proctor & Gamble. He played for the AHL Maine Mariners before signing on with Philly at the end of 1983. It was in the mid to late 80s with the Flyers that Poulin became known as one of the league’s premier defensive forwards. His good speed, great hands, primo faceoff skills and acute hockey smarts made him a penalty killing force for the orange and black. He scored 76 and 74 points in his first two seasons and Philly went to the Cup in his second season, losing to the Oilers Dynasty.
In the later 80s, Poulin was named Flyers captain and although his offensive totals went down he was recognized more and more as a defensive specialist, In the 1987 Finals, he was assigned to cover Gretzky and Messier. He won the 1987 Selke for top defensive forward and was named to the all-star games from 1986 to 1988. In 1989-1990 he was traded to the Bruins for Kenny “The Rat” Linseman. The Bruins made the Cup Finals in his first season there, but again Poulin’s team lost to the Oilers.
In the 1990s, injuries took a toll on Poulin’s career, but he did win the King Clancy Award for top humanitarian on and off the ice in 1993. He finished his career off with the Caps in two seasons from 1993-1995. He now works in the Leafs front office as Vice President of Hockey Operations.
“I took a great deal of pride in my defence. And defence to me is like cleaning. It’s hard work. If you have a willingness to learn and a willingness to do it, you can do it. And I took a great deal of pride in that. Some nights, driving to the rink, knowing the next three hours every time Gretzky stopped on the ice you were out there. The last year in my division, I had Eric Lindros eight times, I had Mario Lemieux eight times, I had Mark Messier in New York eight times and then I had Adam Oates on my nights off. But I took a great deal of pride in being out there when they were out there.”

Had today been new years, who would you start in goal for the WC? Neither has been especially good, so splitting time come to my mind as an option, but keeping one goalie warmed-up in that weather will be hard enough.
I would go with Varly.
Stats may or may not prove otherwise, and I also don’t think the goalie that ends the losing streak should be annointed the #1. Sure, giving up 7 goals in a game doesn’t look good, but you can’t put all of those goals on Varly. I feel as if Neuvirth has been letting in more soft goals of late. However, maybe a vote of confidence in a game like this may be what he needs to turn it around.
There are still 6 games in between now and the WC, including 1 against the Pens. I’d split up these next 6 games, use them as way of having some “friendly” competition between the two goalies. The game against Pittsburgh next week may end up dictating who gets the start in the WC. If the starter of that game plays well, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them back in there on New Year’s Day.

Well, no. But it’s sort of dumb. Why is he spending this money instead of using it to extend guys who are a little harder to replace (ie, Semin or Laich)? Erskine has played well at times this season, but he’s a dime-a-dozen type of player. One that you could get for a lot less.
This is the crux of it. This makes no sense. Erskine’s contribution could be had for half that amount.

This is inexcusable. Locking yourself into three bottom-three (or worse) defensemen for multiple years at cap hits over league minimum is madness. It will destroy the team’s ability to make more important deals.

I have to agree that his strategy of taking care of the top and the bottom can work for the forwards but I don’t understand the need to worry about a 3rd pairing D and your #7 and #8 guys. So sad.
