Bondra vs 66, one last time.
I was really hoping for Kolzig in net for the Caps alumni game. Brashear will probably be one of the better forwards for the Caps.
What does everyone think about the rest of the selected players? I’m wondering how many of them still play in house leagues\lace up.
Think twice before you speak, and then you may be able to say something more insulting than if you spoke right out at once.
A bit disappointing (though I’m not disappointed that Jeff Brown – he of the 9 games as a Cap – isn’t there).

A lot of the names are a bit before my time (as in before I was even born)
I was thinking that Laughlin, Kolzig, Stevens, and Hunter were going to playing for sure. Haha on Brown…I wonder where they pulled that from as someone who “immediately came to mind.”
Do you have any idea why Locker isn’t playing?

Hunter is busy coaching the London Knights. What is Calle Jo up to these days? I was kind of expecting him to be involved.

He is. According to Wikipedia,
After retiring the second time around, Johansson continued to work as a colour commentator and did studio analysis during game intermissions on Swedish Canal+. He was doing both Elitserien and NHL games and was one of the two main colour commentators at Canal+, the other one being former Tre Kronor coach Anders “Ankan” Parmström.1 Canal+ lost the Swedish broadcasting rights for NHL to the Viasat Group ahead of the 2009-2010 season. Together with former Canal+ commentator Niklas Holmgren, with whom Calle has developed a great chemistry when commentating, they subsequently signed for Viasat where they now continue in the same manner as when at Canal+.

About Cap Alumni Greg Adams
For the 1988–89 season, he was moved to the defending Stanley Cup Champion Edmonton Oilers. However, he struggled to find a niche with the Oilers, scoring just 4 goals in 49 games, and was dealt again at the trade deadline, this time to the Vancouver Canucks. This created one of the more unusual situations in NHL history, as the Canucks’ lineup already featured star winger Greg ‘Gus’ Adams. As a result, the elder Adams would thereafter be known as ‘Greg C. Adams’.

FWIW – Jeff is still out here in St. Louis coaching youth hockey and the St. Louis Bandits of the USHL.
He moved about two years ago, but used to live in my neighborhood. I remember distinctly Jeff bringing his kids around for Halloween, towing a cooler with beers. That’s an ex-hockey player for you.
I’ve chatted with him many times, and had the pleasure of coaching his son in mini-mites alongside my daughter. Now his son is bigger than me and tearing things up.

Not the entire list, but a number of these guys are the ones who live locally and are active with the alumni team, e.g., Stewart, Cote, Hangsleben, Bondra, Pivonka, Labre, Sabourin, Rausse, plus May is obviously around. It is disappointing to an extent that some bigger names won’t be there, but in general the timing stinks, New Year’s, not local, etc., and from what I know, the Caps alumni group is not as active as many/Caps themselves haven’t been as active on this front as many organizations.
I can’t figure out why Kelly Miller is more of a footnote in that OFB post?
Sylvain Cote!! Just one of my all-time favorite players ever…that’s exciting :)

Excited for Cote, missing Johansson.
"Semin had two goals this year, Perreault comes in and he gets three."
Did Johansson ever make up with the team? I recall him being very very upset about the way his exit went.
If it's too loud, turn it down.
I seem to recall Johansson was at KCI sometime within the past year or two, and the Caps posted video on the website of an interview.

Honestly, since I came to become a hockey fan as a result of NHL ’96, I think of Don Beaupre in a Senators uniform. How weird is that?
And I’d never wish injury or illness upon someone, but if Bob Errey were to come down with laryngitis as a result of playing in that game, the world would be a better place.

“Nashi.”
It indicates the absence of something, as in “we have no bananas”.
The appropriate word in this context would be “iya”.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
“iie” was indeed what I was thinking when I saw it. “iya” is slang-y. SME is the authority, though.
by DrinkingPartner on Dec 15, 2010 9:06 AM EST up reply actions
“Iie” is more a response to a factual proposition: “did you go to the theater last night?” “No, I did not.”
Questions of volition or desire – “do you want Brian Rolston” – are properly addressed with “iya”, which indicates dislike, distaste or lack of enthusiasm.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
Hmm, alright. I don’t think I’ve ever specifically gotten that explanation between the two. I do remember that my teacher was very hard on us using “iya” in any written form unless it was as a part of a quotation/dialog.

Stupid. We don’t need more wingers and if he can’t even crack the NJD lineup then that doesn’t bode well for us. If we really needed a guy that can PK maybe I’d think about it, but I think we’ve got enough PK-worthy forwards (and I’m not even sure he can still PK like the Brian Rolston of old).

Some familiar names on both sides: Mogilny, Konstantinov, Fedorov, Malakhov, Shanahan, Turgeon, Fleury, Corriveau.
IIRC, that might have been Sean Simpson hitting the Russian goalie in that clip too.

I remember Shanny on the Canuck team most but man was that Russian team loaded. Amazingly the Russians had a really poor round robin and were expected to not even medal so that game was just a thorwaway for them. Evegny Davydov, the Russian who jumped the bunch to fight Fleury, even had a short lived NHL career in the early 90s with the Jets, Sens and Panthers.

Guess it depends on how you interpret “memorable” – is it “what I currently remember best” or “what will be the most lasting”?
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
No one can really be surprised by this poll. I mean Canada’s second largest sports network asks its viewership ( who are primarily Canadian) their most memorable World Junior Championship moment. Of course it’s going to be skewed to Canadian moments. If ESPN asked its viewership (mainly American) their most memorable Olympic hockey moment it would no doubt be Lake Placid in 1980 not Crosby scoring in OT this past year.
As said above, I would answer the 1987 bench clearing brawl because that was such a “Did that really just happen?” moment.

Right. I would say the Carlson goal is probably Canadian fandom’s most forgettable moment, at least of recent vintage.

As a Canadian, I can’t say I really lose much sleep over it. I said last year in the GDT for the Final that I was happy for Carlson, although my rooting interests were for Canada. I still am. What I took most from that game is that it was the most exciting hockey game I saw last year, regardless of the outcome.

Lockout talk makes me want to go out and choke an old lady - Elliotte Friedman
Do you actually have reasons to hate the Blue Jackets? I kind of regard them with utter indifference.
Well I’ve always hated Hitchcock so that started me down that path, then there was the whole AO injury thing last year (which is kind of lame, I admit, I don’t even think they did anything too hate-worthy there), then they picked up Umberger. I guess I don’t have a good reason, just a lot of things that keep rubbing me the wrong way.
I do like that GMGM owns them on the trade circuit, though.

I’d guess the 2004 game with the Fleury flub/O’Sullivan GWG might even rank higher in the memorable for being less than memorable moment from a Canadian perspective, but that might be a toss-up with last year’s game?
I’d say in general an OT game takes the cake. Then consider how tight the game last year was compared to the ‘04 game that looked over after two periods and I’d say it was probably a better game in ’10.
Lockout talk makes me want to go out and choke an old lady - Elliotte Friedman
Better game in ’10, I agree, but the US comeback and Fleury flub are pretty memorable in the games Canadians want to forget category, IMO.
As a USA fan, I prefer the ‘10 game; as a Caps fan, it’s a no brainer to prefer the ’10 game.
To be honest, I had forgotten all about the ’04 game and the MAF flub. Not really forgetting as in I had banished the awful memory from my mind. It just skipped my mind.
It could be because International hockey for me has never been as memorable as NHL hockey. If you mentioned hockey error to me the first thing crossing my mind would be Steve Smith for EDM scoring on his own goal in 1986 of the Smythe Division Final vs CGY than MAF’s mistake.

From Wang’s CI piece:
Coach Bruce Boudreau, who vigorously defended Michal Neuvirth and Semyon Varlamov today after practice when questioned about local and national media reports suggesting an upgrade at the position was necessary:
“I’ll tell them the same thing: We’ve got two great young goaltenders,” he said during a heavily attended media session at Kettler Capitals Iceplex. “Not good, but great young goaltenders. We’re not going after anybody else.”
I watched the presser and agree with Wang; it was a “vigorous” defense. And yet somehow, Dreger on OTF last night states that the Caps are “quietly saying they’re going to be fine,” implying that they’re not really sure. Who is saying this quietly, Mr. Dreger, besides you?

What’s odd about it is that, to be perfectly honest, the goaltending hasn’t been very good over the past four games. I mean, I get the defense of the guys, but they’ve been as much to blame as anyone during the latter part of The Slide.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Both goalies have had some amazing games and are clearly talented. Do you think this breakdown is a result of them both being young and not having a veteran goalie (on the team, not as a coach) as a mentor?
There's always more to learn about Hockey.
Related (and take it for whatever it’s worth) Nabakov’s Russian agent says the Caps might be interested, but unless he’s working with Meehan on it he’s talking shite.

All I keep seeing in my mind for Nabokov is the Olympic game against Canada and ask why we’d want him. I know that’s not fair and he was pretty decent for the Sharks last year, but I see no reason why it would be worth it to send one of the kids to Hershey to bring him in.
And not necessarily to defend the goalies, but we know Neuvirth was too sick to relieve Varlamov the other day, but do we know if Varly isn’t 100%. I hate it when the flu or it’s relative charges through the locker room and makes everyone sick at the same time. How do you determine how much is illness and how much is just general suckitude?
"It's always good to have vikings."
At this point I’d determine that it’s because between them they’ve played a little more than a full season of games combined, but that’s just my spitballing.
*damn, Nabakov? I got up too early.

Nabokov would be an instant upgrade on most goalies in the league, let alone our kids. I’d take him in a second and alternate Varly and Neuvy in Hershey, because they’re both clearly NHL goalies, even now.
by DrinkingPartner on Dec 15, 2010 9:17 AM EST up reply actions
His lack of greatness in the playoffs/Olympics concerns me, but I think I’m with you at the right price. I wouldn’t want his signing to take cap space that likely will be needed for a 2C at the deadline. So maybe at $1.5 – 2? Unfortunately, I think Tampa will pay more than that. They’re much more in need of a G upgrade.
Ehhh…the stats people say Nabokov is average, if not replacement level. I’m not sure what to think about him, but I do think Varly and Neuvirth are nearly unbeatable when hot, and their hotness or lack thereof is really going to make or break this team in the playoffs (that’s how it always seems to work—hot goalies win otherwise close series).

I can’t argue stats, but he’s a solid goaltender when I watch him play. He’d probably be a good mentor for Varly.

My impression of Nabby is that he mixes long stretches of OK-to-good play with a few games of putrid work and then the occasional excellent effort.
Which really sounds quite a lot like what we already have.
I’d rather do without him.

Varly’s lows seem to be really low. I’d be ok with an insurance policy for the playoffs.

And really, what kind of “insurance policy” can any goalie be? Is there someone you know for an absolute fact will come in and have a .910 save percentage and allow 2.50 goals against per game?
I get “insurance policy” from a health standpoint – valid concern with these guys, especially Varly. But from a performance standpoint? Not so much.

I think they deserve blame, but not necessarily as much blame as the guys in front of them. Both guys are clearly talented goaltenders, but it seems to me that they are still at a point where they need at least a little bit of help from the guys in front of them. Not to say that they’re incapable of occasionally stealing a game single-handedly, but I think the poor goaltending is much more a function of the play of the team overall rather than anything that Neuvirth or Varlamov is doing wrong.
My thoughts exactly.
When you’re not scoring, the absolute biggest thing you can’t do is give up soft ones, which they’ve been doing. Of course, the other thing you can’t do is give up a bunch of gilt-edged chances, which they’ve also done regularly.
But the goalies have to be better.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
Right, and he acknowledges that to some extent – he points out that as young goalies (just like young guys in any position) they have their rough patches. He also made mention of the fact that Varly would give up one goal and think the world was on his shoulders, which just wasn’t true.
Another interesting part of the interview, at least in my opinion, was that he took that idea of Varly wanting to be perfect and extending it to the rest of the team. In other words, they’re so afraid to mess up now because of the slump that they’re trying to be perfect and it’s not a perfect world.
If anyone needs me, I'll be at Kettler.
It’s been a team thing… they can’t score (eight goals in six games), they can’t defend, they can’t stop pucks, they have no power play, they can’t kill penalties, and every time I see a shot of Bruce behind the bench he seems to have this thousand-yard stare look about him.
You’d think they were calling Redskin Park for advice.
If you've read this far...seek help.
The goalies usually don’t get much blame when a team is getting shutout multiple times. In most those games the Caps could have been down 1-0 or 2-0 and still lost.
Think twice before you speak, and then you may be able to say something more insulting than if you spoke right out at once.
I really appreciate G. Wang’s range—his fantasy football chat is pretty solid and he keeps his undying love for the ‘Boys in check for the most part—but one can tell he’s a hockey rook with the confusion of the Gordon boys. Where’s that pesky fact checker, anyway?

I firmly believe that the Caps will continue to roll Neuvy and Varly, but…
Fleischmann, a talented left winger, was the center of trade rumors this summer, but Boudreau said it’s time to end the speculation. “Oh yeah. Those trade rumors, I think you can faithfully put all of them to bed,” Boudreau told Sporting News. “We laugh at so many of them that have no substance. I don’t know who makes them up. The RMNB piece provides some interesting data. Nothing you didn’t know intuitively – the Caps aren’t scoring – but it does bring in to focus a couple of things.
One, the Caps are generating chances – and not just the subjective “they couldda scored there” chances, but shots from the high end real estate.
Further, the conversion rate blows. But it blows to such an extreme extent that it beggars belief to think it stays the same.
This did strike me:
Convert percentage is simply goals-for divided by scoring chances-for. […] Remember, not all goals are scored from "dangerous" scoring areas, so they aren’t logged as chances.
I’d like to see a conversion rate that scrubs out the non-scoring-chance goals, to give us a true conversion rate. It would give us an idea of how many “lucky” goals have driven the results prior to The Slide.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
I’d like to see a conversion rate that scrubs out the non-scoring-chance goals, to give us a true conversion rate.
The total scoring chances are there, except for CAR game noted. You could just divide total goals-for (minus the goals scored during CAR game) by the total chances listed in RMNB post.

Bourne gives us one more reason to appreciate the team’s handling of Alzner and the young goalies; to marvel at Carlson’s rapid rise; and to recognize what an advantage Matthieu Perreault has over Marcus Johansson this season.

Great read, this line in particular reminds me of the on-going debate I’ve been having with D’ohboy regarding Mackan:
For young players entering the NHL, there’s a sizable learning curve, and I’m not convinced that only giving a rookie a moderate amount of ice time early in his career is a detriment to his development. I know it helped me in college.
I’m not trying to call checkmate, just pointing out Bourne’s take on modest ice time for rookies. That’s been one of D’oh’s biggest complaints and I know he respects Bourne so I found it interesting.
Regarding Stamkos, I wish Bourne would have also pointed out that Stamkos didn’t really take off until February or so, not right after Melrose got fired. It’s even more evidence in favor of his conclusion.
Lockout talk makes me want to go out and choke an old lady - Elliotte Friedman
And a big part of that adjustment was conditioning and strength training. He was getting scratched every few games to work on those things, so he could go all-out, all-the-time against NHL competition.

From Puck Daddy Interview w/ HBO
I’m really, really excited to see this thing.
In the Rangers game, during the timeout Boudreau called, you saw on TV that he was giving hell to his team, but you couldn’t tell what he was saying. We have every word that he said. At one of the lower moments a team like that could ever have, you’d imagine in one of, they’d say “you can’t use that,” but no: They said “he said it, you shot it, it goes on the air.”
It sounds like we’re going to get mic’d up fights and penalty box chirping and hot-headed coaches ranting in the dressing room.
Saw that, and thought immediately of Boudreau’s position that he wasn’t so much blasting the guys as encouraging them.
Apparently, we’re going to find out.
Or, you’re going to find out and tell me about it, as I do not have HBO.

Why? If you’re short on talent, I’d agree, but the Capitals have so much talent that when everyone is playing at their normal level (so AO much better than now) I think it’s what should be done.

I’ve wanted to make a fanpost on this, but it’s actually pretty simple – it’s all about comparative advantage between players.
Let’s take Datsyuk for example. He is, by all accounts, Detroit’s best all-around forward. For the sake of simplicity, let’s say he’s a 10 on offense and a 10 on defense. Now take Darren Helm, Detroit’s version of Boyd Gordon. Let’s say he’s a 3 on offense and a 7 on defense. While Datsyuk may be the better defensive player on an absolute level, Helm’s got a comparative advantage on defense. By putting Datsyuk out there for tough defensive assignments time after time, the coach is using his assets less efficiently than he could.
To make this a little less theoretical, there are a shitload of guys in the NHL/AHL/KHL/SES who can play defense. The recent post-expansion era (late 90s through early 00s) taught us that. There are tons of guys out there like Boyd Gordon, or Matt Hendricks who are capable of giving you 12-15 mins a night of solid defensive hockey but who, for the most part, couldn’t score in a brothel. Maybe their defensive ability is slightly less than that of an elite player like Datsyuk, but the difference is minimal compared to the delta between their relative offensive capabilities.
An efficient use of talent would exploit the comparative advantage that guys like Helm/Gordo, etc. have on defense by putting them out (where possible), against tough assignments, thereby letting Datsyuk make the most of his shifts on the ice.
And I hear you talk the talk, but I don't see you walk the walk and I still don't believe a thing you say.
by D'ohboy on Dec 15, 2010 11:18 AM EST up reply actions 3 recs
I think that when it comes to line matching, what matters most is not the composition of your own team in a vacuum, but how it stacks up to others.
Power vs power puts our offensive studs out against theirs, and our defensive stoppers out against theirs. There’s no obvious competitive advantage.
Likewise, line matching puts our good defenders against their good offensive players, and vice versa. In theory, this should lead to fewer goals overall, but in the abstract it’s impossible to say which team it benefits.
In both cases, the strategy is the same for both teams, whichever strategy is being employed.
I really like Boudreau’s philosophy. He says “Fuck you, opposing coach — I’m going to put out whoever is my best player who’s rested and ready to go. You’re not going to dictate who I play.” This has got to get the best players many more shifts over the course of the season. To use your example, it maximizes the use of your 10-10 Datsyuk, and minimizes the use of your 3-7 Helm.
At the same time, Boudreau does pay attention to zone starts. He puts his better defensive players out there for defensive zone starts, and his better offensive zone players out there for offensive zone starts. That’s playing strength to situation.

I think I’ll have to dwell on that argument a bit, but my initial reactions are
1) does TOI mess things up?
2) a team as deep up front as Washington can match or better 25 or so other teams line-for-line at least, and having all the 5on5 time in DC’s favor is a good thing
3) in hockey, a bounce here or there may decide the game, and I’m more comfortable with all the 5on5 time being in the Caps’ favor instead of some heavily in their favor and some not, and
4) Datsyuk can only score so much (his stats will start plateauing) at which point it becomes an advantage to toughen his matchups until his boxcars start to take a nosedive. I’m thinking Backstrom + Ovechkin would take a minimal hit in boxcars, but benefit the team hugely defensively, going power versus power against most lines. They’ll be forced to play better to achieve the same results, and this season I’m fairly sure they haven’t been playing their best yet.

Morning Skate
Have to say that I am a little surprised that Ovechkin is not out for the morning skate.
I’m hoping they called up A. Gordon AND Beagle because Ovechkin is finally taking time to sit and get healthy. A pipe dream, I’m sure.
Eat, drink, and be merry! And then drink some more.
If he hasn’t sat yet, he ain’t sitting now (barring something new, of course).

Six game losing streak,3 days between games and the only players not participating in the morning skate are a guy who’s hurt, a guy who missed practice yesterday, and the Captain.
Bad optics there.
Two of those guys also skipped the Game 7 skate last year.

Honestly, I’d rather Ovi be in the film room watching how teams have been defending him (and a few clips of his..um..defense in a few of these games) then participating in a meaningless morning skate.
Just trying to capture the spirit of the thing...

Not sure how meaningless it is right now to remind everyone that they’re in this all together and they have a leader ready to lead them. That said, if he’s sick, sure – skip it.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I’m not in the room, but I don’t get the impression that guys really value the morning skates too much. If they need the symbolism of Ovi skating around for 45 minutes to remind them that they are all in this together, then they are in more trouble than we think. Hopefully they value what Ovi does on the ice during games more.
That said, I imagine the only reason Ovi isn’t out there is due to sickness or maybe a bad reaction in his knee after yesterday’s practice.

Ovechkin leads by example. The team follows him. If they see him busting his ass, they bust their asses. If they see him coasting…
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
On the other hand, if his knee really is hurt and he’s sitting out, it might show the other guys that it’s fine to rest if you’re hurt.
There is no problem a hammer cannot either fix or make irrelevant.
Boudreau says AO is fine (Semin questionable for tonight).
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Boudreau or GMGM saying that doesn’t mean much to me. I believe they said the same during the 2008-9 playoffs when Green was hurt.

My thinking is, the other Caps will know if Ovie actually is hurting. If he is, this could set a good example. Even if it’s not an injury that would cause him to miss a game, the fact that he is trying to rest it so as to be ready for the game tonight is good.
However, this is all going off the assumption that the puck to the knee that Natty mentioned actually stung him.
There is no problem a hammer cannot either fix or make irrelevant.
That’s a valid guess. No less valid, though, would be “I’ve got bumps and bruises too, but I’m out here,” no? It’s all speculative and probably not terribly productive on our parts.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Very true. I guess I’m thinking of the fact that Green seems to be having issues with his shoulder and didn’t want to rest it. That just seems to be a hockey mindset that I think is a bad idea.
There is no problem a hammer cannot either fix or make irrelevant.
Agreed. But I guess the difference is that if you’re healthy enough to play a full-contact game, you’re healthy enough to take a morning skate. Wanna sit? Sit both.
Obviously there are different rules for different players, though.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
He takes morning skate more often than not. My guess is his knee is sore and he’s resting it. I don’t think anything else needs to be made of him missing one morning skate.
If anyone needs me, I'll be at Kettler.
I’m not trying to make a lot of it, b/c I agree, not a huge deal.
That said, I wonder where he’d rank among NHL captains in % of morning skates taken.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I’ve wondered that often, too, simply out of curiosity (not Ovechkin specifically, but captains as a whole).

I don’t think it’s a huge deal, but it’s at least something to note, no?
I do feel like a large percentage of us here would find a way to excuse almost any conduct from AO. But when things aren’t going well, it’s fair to take a look at the non-game aspects of his conduct, and think that there’s a spillover.
At least imo.

Totally agree. I just don’t see morning skates as “ass busting” exercises. Practice, yes, which he did yesterday. I view morning skates as just an old tradition that really has no impact on the game or preparation for the game.

by dcsportsfan1 on Dec 15, 2010 11:51 AM EST up reply actions
Every time I’ve gone to a morning skate I’ve asked myself “Why the hell did I come down here to watch this.” It’s a whole lof guys gliding around the ice, shooting pucks against the boards and talking. If it were like the NFL morning walk thorughs where the coaches and the team actually went through plays and formations, I could see the argument, but to my untrained eyes, morning skates just seem like individual loosening up periods. If they were important, I’m guessing they wouldn’t be optional.
Agreed, they are low-key, low-energy affairs. BB said in an interview last year that the main purpose was to “get the guys out of bed”. Greg Smith said that there is a lot of evidence that energy spent in the pre-game skate is energy taken away from the game, and that pre-game skates really shouldn’t even take place — but tradition in hockey is strong. So they try hard not to have the guys expend too much energy.
I’ll try and look this up, but I’m guessing the tradition started to make sure the guys weren’t hung over from the night before. Could have also been to get guys legs moving after a long overnight bus/train ride from wherever they were playing the night before.

I think he’s banged up some. Yesterday during practice a trainer came out with a squat container, sort of the size for car wax, called Ovi over, who turned around with his back toward the trainer and it appeared the trainer put his hand down inside the neck of Ovi’s jersey rubbed whatever it was on his back. Ovi had this look of it hurts so bad, it feels good.
Have to wonder if that means he’s not playing tonight; also, a possibility with Semin?

I’m not clear why people want Ovechkin to sit. He seems to have a sore hand, but I’m not aware of other injuries.
Why should a pro hockey player need to rest? I want him to play as often as possible. He’s our captain and (I hope) our leader. He should be out there. Let him skip all the practices he wants, as long as he plays in the games.
Life With Spidey -- a blog about sports, travel, work, family and fun.

Speaking for myself, I suspect that the reason he has been playing poorly is because he is far less than 100% physically, so I want him to sit to “heal,” not to “rest.” A la Green recently.
Eat, drink, and be merry! And then drink some more.
I think “he’s hurt/less than 100%” is wishful thinking. Not that it isn’t possible or even likley, but I do think people want an explanation for why he has been so un-Ovechkinlike, and that’s the only one that really is even mildly comforting.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Do you think the turning point for him was the Campbell hit?
"Semin had two goals this year, Perreault comes in and he gets three."
No way. He played really well after that as well as in the playoffs. He had 18 shots on goal the last two games of the Montreal series and was all over the place.
I don’t think he’s looked the same since the Campbell hit. It’s a small sample size, but stat wise Ovi had 13 points in his final 11 games of the season following the Campbell hit, which is a 1.18 point per game pace, and averaged 1.57 points per game before the campbell hit.
Because now I can justify browsing and commenting during the work day with the argument that I am promoting my business.

I found this really great preview on tonight’s game.
The video hostess does greatly assume Ovechkin will be playing tho.
Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins championships. - Michael Jordan
If not hurt, have to wonder if he’s battling whatever illness is going around the dressing room. Still, from watching him this season, I agree with others that there have been many times when it looks like his wrist/hand is bothering him; the fight made me question that a bit, however.
Sure looks like Johansson is sitting and the first line LW slot is waiting for Ovechkin based on Masisak’s morning skate lines.
There’s no doubt it’s all wishful thinking on my part, but the out-of-shape, not good at hockey, suddenly ineffective explanations make even less sense to me.
Eat, drink, and be merry! And then drink some more.
The inaccuracy of his shots is what leads me to believe he may be hurt. Never seen him miss this badly on shots from the point on the pp. When did he ever flub one-timers on the rush before?
The Kolzilla PR department has advised me to post a link to my work at Inside Hockey, so here it is.

Yea. the fact that people even think to claim ovechkin is out of shape makes me laugh and piss myself. He is a machine, he plays HUGE minutes in a very physical and aggressive manner – anyone “out of shape” and eating a poor diet would NEVER be able to do the things he does and play the minutes he does, at the tempo he plays.
That argument was out the window, and mostly wishful thinking for ovechkin’s detractors I think, before it even started.

I was doing some research on the success of teams that have fired their coach mid-season and found this little nugget. This was written before the Penguins won the Cup, so the number is now four. That said, if the goal is to win a Cup this season, the odds seem to say that firing a coach during the season isn’t the way to go.
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, only three times in the history of the NHL has a team changed coaches during the season and went on to win the Stanley Cup that same season.
nhl.com
Interesting. The thought of firing a coach who wins like BB does because of a poor stretch of games over the course of less than 1 month (mind you, a losing streak unlike anything we have ever seen since BB arrived), in the first quarter of the regular season – Still makes me laugh a bit every time it’s spoken.
I think it may be more because of the playoff losses than the current losing streak itself. I am sure if we had made the finals (or maybe even conference finals) last year the reaction now would be different.
Yea, playoff woes are a concern, and I think this rough patch will help with that. I just don’t see this as a time to even think about Bruce’s departure from the team.
I agree completely, and I’ve really been shocked at the number of Rink regulars who are suggesting it (or urging it). But I’ve come to see that much of it is a hangover from last year’s playoff outing and a belief that BB was out-coached in that series. Plus, this is DC, where coaches/managers are fired at the drop of a hat.
For me at least, I left the Montreal series thinking he was out coached, but willing to give him another shot. And yet this season there isn’t anything (save for maybe the PK?) that suggests to me that he learned a damn thing from that series. My patience is running thin.
I love the guy, but I’d love a Cup more.

I think the better thing to look at is how many teams had a rough patch like this – worked through it, and then went on to be a much better team and win the cup.
The other question is whether any of those 3 teams would have won the Cup with the coach they started the season with…

Is the slump building character or revealing it?
it seems there have never been as many young players that have had extraordinarily high expectations heaped on them in recent years. Some have risen up and reached the pinnacle (Crosby and Malkin, Toews and Kane), while we see our boys get close but fall out. I recall Pavel Datsyuk’s struggles early on in his career – he didn’t have a single goal in three playoff runs from 2003 – 2006 (‘05 was the lockout). He and Zetterberg were brought along slowly under players like Yzerman.
Players today don’t seem to have that luxury, and I feel it has hurt Ovie, Semin, Backstrom, and Green. That focus to develop a 2 way game was explored by Hanlon but somewhat abandoned by Boudreau. I’ve been watching DET lately and it never ceases to amaze me to see all 5 players at the dots or below, backchecking until the puck is secured.
Bouds doesn’t need us to teach him how/what to coach his team, but it surely seems as though some of that focus on puck possession has disappeared.
I don’t put a lot of stock in anone’s specific remedies for Bruce Boudreau. The fact is, he forgot more about hockey over his morning coffee than I — and I daresay most any other commentator — is ever going to know. But results are easy to evaluate. This is a team that has underachieved in each of the past three years (they lost to a lower seeded team in each playoff series they lost), and they are playing badly at the moment. The strongest part of their repertoire — offense in depth — has deserted them.
Is it a speed bump on the way to a title, or is it a signal that time (not to mention the Penguins, Blackhawks, and maybe soon the Thrashers and Lightning) has passed this version of the team by?
If you've read this far...seek help.
If I knew the answer to that question, I probably would have been smart enough to have bought Apple stock when it was $8. The bottom line is that losing streaks are the true enigma in sports. Most often, noone knows why they start or how to end them other than to keep playing and wait for the Gods to turn in your favor.
