Torches and Pitchforks: Why The Rink is Like Masochism

First, let me start this by applauding JP and this blog for being magnanimous and awesome. Every day for the last few years, ever since the Rink was on Blogspot, I have booted up my computer and taken several minutes to read through his links and assorted musings. This is, by no stretch of anything really, the best Caps blog on the interwebs.

That said, this place can be hard to read; and it now seems so more often than not. Today really caught me questioning why I even bother reading comments and other Fan Posts. One Fan Post in particular really got my head spinning. Now, before I go any further I want to acknowledge the fact that I recognize the atmosphere. The comments here are not for the weak willed. I have been slammed and I have slammed. This is not whining or bitching about how my feeling got hurt. This is also not meant to be some basterdized Gadsden Flag waiving at internet injustice... if that were the case I would be hacking the institutions and individuals supporting it then leaking what I found to some Aussies. I kind of find it sad that I even have to throw some asanine disclaimer down anyway; but I feel the need to be as straightforward as possible.

I know the comments and Fan Posts are just personal thoughts and I don't have to read them. This is where the masochism comes in. No matter how frustrating and overwhelming some things said here can be... I can't help but read them. So, the one that got me going today was a disrespectful Fan Post about our fellow Caps fans over at CI. I was going to add my thoughts to the comment section there, but, after reading through those I felt it necessary to write this diatribe. The Fan Post in question openly seethed with malice as the post quoted fellow fans from CI then commented on the unintelligent nature of each one. A commenter questioned the post's intent (albeit not in the best way) and was torn appart. The commenter called into question the "elitist" tone of the post (which, let's all be honest, is a nice way of puting it). A site moderator then defended the poster and the post because, in his words, this blog is elitist. That single line blew me over the edge because, just today, another site moderator wrote a post of her own that refuted the claim that this blog is elitist.

So, which is it? Is the Rink a highfalutin den full of bourbon swilling, cigar smoking, monocle wearing hockey snobs or is it a place that people can have constructive discourse on the state of our beloved hockey team? I would like to think of it as the latter, but, to be honest, I think it is drifting further and further away from it (as evidenced by the moderator's quite quippy "So... Bye?" comment). I for one do not want this place to turn into some sort of College ACB like abomination where Fan Posts like the one in question are allowed to be made, and where moderators attack members that question questionable content. Personally, I think everyone should stick to addressing the chief concern of this blog: Capitals Hockey. Puting down fellow fans and Rink members is low brow and should not be allowed here. Just a thought, or two... and I know this is alot to say about nothing...
