AHL Top Scorers

So do folks still think of Andrew Gordon as a plugger, a grinder, someone who is basically a 4th liner at the NHL level?
And if so, what else does he need to do to show that maybe he could handle a scoring role?

You know, the more I think about it this morning, I wonder if the Caps think that Semin is going to be suspended and they’re gonna give A.Gordon a tryout on the 2nd line. Or it could be my lack of sleep is making me think crazy thoughts.
It’s not crazy at all. Gordo played the top line all last year, and has continued this year with Perry as his center for the bulk of the season (Aucoin has been out with a knee injury) so if they’re going to play him with someone without the benefit of a practice, play him with a linemate he knows.
And if you expand on GOD’s list, you’ll see MP is top 10 in the AHL for assists with 17, even though he’s only played in 18 games down there. He and Gordo have played well together and I hope BB gives them a chance together tonight.

Healthy scratch everyone but Bradley. Wrangle up his entire immediate and extended family. Give them skates, a 2 hour crash course and hockey, and put them all on the team.

There were quite a bit of Pens fans on various websites who wanted Bylsma gone and a guy like Therrien back (I have no idea why).
Hockey Blogger at Pensburgh.com
Therrien? We’re they smoking crack when they made these comments?
Pledge Drive 2010-2011: SO KIDS CAN!! Help build a playground
Pens fans just don’t know how good they have it when it comes to coaching. If the Pens ever fire him, the Caps should waste absolutely no time in hiring him.
Rocking the Red for teams on the banks of the Potomac and at the Gateway Arch and Singing the Blues about Hockey.
Agreed, and I think this fire BB stuff id overdone. All a coach can do (in my eyes) is tell his guys “we’re playing Lemaire’s system where we will not be happy unless we win 1-0,” or he says “hey guys lets just be smart and try to outshoot the other team as much as we can.” Bylsma and BB are doing it right, and the GM’s have given them the players to do it. Bad luck shouldn’t get in the way of being rational.
Also I heard last night that Tippet said the Coyotes are built to win one goal games. Really? They think that’s sustainable? There’s a coach that has a problem, but nobody will say anything about it…
Hockey Blogger at Pensburgh.com
Dave Tippet is the coach you use as an example of a problem? Remind me what he did last year? And the previous years with DAL? He’s a pretty damn good coach.
Lockout talk makes me want to go out and choke an old lady - Elliotte Friedman
What happened last year is his team got lucky and won a bunch of one goal games. That isn’t sustainable. Structuring a system around winning one goal games isn’t a good hockey system.
Hockey Blogger at Pensburgh.com
He also got a hell of a performance from Bryzgalov and won a bunch of SO games.
Tippett’s done a pretty damn good job with the ’Yotes, regardless. He identified his tough-minute guys, got them the matchups and shielded the guys that needed it.

That aside though, we all know it’s not a good system to build a team to win one goal games. If people call for BB’s or Bylsma’s head when their teams lose 3-5 games in a row, then Tippet should have been gone a while ago. Tippet isn’t a bad coach, but I was mostly trying to illustrate how ridiculous (I think) calling for the coaches of the Caps or the Pens to be changed given all the success they’ve had.
Hockey Blogger at Pensburgh.com
I can countenance the idea of a system that’s designed to sit on any lead; we both saw it against MTL when the Habs went up by a goal. They dumped the puck, got off for a change and went into a very, very passive trap. It was a recipe for getting way outshot, but I’d guess that style of team is better at holding a lead than a more aggressive club.
Put another way; if a team’s default mode of play is a passive, defensive style, it fits for me intuitively that when they, like all teams, fall into a defensive shell, they’re better at it.
This is predicated on getting the 1st goal, or getting a lead, which is going to be at least partly luck, but I don’t think Tippett is necessarily wrong, here. If his goal is to minimize the frequency of potential scoring events, he’s inherently going to create more one-goal contests than a team in the top-5 in scoring, like both WSH and PIT.

His body of work is pretty good and he wasn’t exactly working with a loaded line up. It’s easy for you guys to dismiss one goal victories, but there’s a lot more to the game than what you’re looking at. I don’t particularly think a coach saying “we’re built to win one goal games” is inherently stupid. Some teams have to play tight defensively and minimize their mistakes while capitalizing on their opportunities. That’s a recipe for one goal victories, and I’d be willing to bet that’s what Tippet was talking about. Not everyone can outscore mistakes and try to open up the game with much success.
Lockout talk makes me want to go out and choke an old lady - Elliotte Friedman
Some teams have to play tight defensively and minimize their mistakes while capitalizing on their opportunities.
This was MTL’s strategy last year, and both of our teams unfortunately caught them at the wrong time. However, as their exit indicates, that type of play won’t generate sustained winning. Even if the Yotes continue to perform well, they can’t expect to be a contender if their gameplan is to win games by one goal.
Hockey Blogger at Pensburgh.com
I think you’re just reading too much into what he said. Coaches care less about margin of victory than stats people do. You could just as easily interpret the comment as “we are built to win low scoring games.” I don’t think the “gameplan” is to win by one goal. The gameplan is to limit your mistakes and play well in your own end and then recognize opportunities to attack and make the best of it. I have a huge problem with stat people being so dismissive of 1 goal victories; it is like winning by 1 goal is a negative now.
Lockout talk makes me want to go out and choke an old lady - Elliotte Friedman
I thought the Adrian Dater comments on Ovechkin were way off the mark last night. The Great #8, along with Matt Hendricks, were the best players on the ice for the Caps. Plus bringing in that crap about the Olympics and playoffs was wrong too. The guy clearly is influenced by the heavily biased Canadian media instead of watching the games and making educated analysis on his own. He also wrote that stuff after being in a bar for an hour or so (see his tweets before the post @adater).

This bug must be everywhere – my kid had it a couple days ago here in NoVa, a friend’s kid had it in Southern MD, and I just heard about another friend’s kid coming down with it while visiting family in MO. Seems to be pretty virulent. If this is what the guys had, no wonder they played like crap against Florida.
I’ve careful to teach my four-year-old to share, but I wish he didn’t include his germs in that. I started feeling iffy on my way to the game, got progressively worse at the VC, and then ended up spending about an hour in the restroom at Farragut West. Awesome Saturday night.

The guy clearly is influenced by the heavily biased Canadian media instead of watching the games and making educated analysis on his own.
Dater’s a lot of things, but this ain’t one of them. I don’t agree with much of what he says, and I don’t always think he knows what he’s talking about, but he’s not some parrot of the Canadian media.
And I hear you talk the talk, but I don't see you walk the walk and I still don't believe a thing you say.
So noted. He could be subliminally influenced by the anti-Ovie rhetoric out of The Great White North because there is so much of it. You almost can’t avoid that anti-Ovechkin talk even if you try. But I think we both he agree he doesn’t know what he is talking about when it comes to Ovechkin, especially in regards to last night’s tilt.
From his “All Things Avs” blog:
Alex Ovechkin is an incredible player, but there’s still the element of simplicity missing from his game. He went 1-on-1 too often tonight, especially in the clutch moments. He’s done that too much in the playoffs in his career too. He did that in the Olympics for Russia. Teammates stand around and watch him at times. But the Caps are going to win plenty of games still.
Sounds pretty spot-on to me.
And I hear you talk the talk, but I don't see you walk the walk and I still don't believe a thing you say.
Specifically, there was a shift in the 3rd when the Caps were pressing where Ovie went into full-on “fuck it, I’ve got this” mode and skated around with the puck for 20 seconds. Sure, it was fun to watch, but it was ultimately a futile gesture. Dater’s right – he’s done the same thing throughout his career. I don’t entirely blame him – he’s always going to be the most talented player on his team, so it makes sense that he wants the puck on his stick. This tendency has been exacerbated by first playing on a crap team of scrubs, then playing for a coach who “lets Ovie be Ovie.”
At some point, Ovie’s going to have to mature and modify his game. We’ve seen inklings of it this year (the assists), but we’ve also seen a shitload more of him charging headlong into the teeth of the defense before turning the puck over. His assist tonight on the Knuble goal was both a good sign and a bad sign. It was good because he decided to do a toe drag rather than cut outside-inside, since that move has long since gotten stale he needs to change things up. It was bad because it was still Ovie trying to beat the other team largely on his own – it was just good on Knuble for being in the right place at the right time.
If, just once, Ovie took the puck down the wing and drove wide on the defenseman before pulling up to hit a trailing linemate, I’d crap my pants with glee. He needs to add moves like that to his repertoire if he’s going to get his scoring back on track. The one way in which I’d disagree with Dater is not that his game is missing simplicity, it’s that it’s TOO simple – he has become predictable in ways that make him much easier to defend. Add that to the fact that he doesn’t look as explosive as he did two years ago, and he looks mortal.
And I hear you talk the talk, but I don't see you walk the walk and I still don't believe a thing you say.
Actually, last night is the first time I’ve thought he looked like himself all season. He was laying people out and when he was on the ice, the puck materialized on his stick. If he starts playing like that again, then I feel a lot better about this team.

I wish on a rush he would skate behind/around the net with 2-3 opposition players trailing flailing behind him. Almost like the Knuble goal last night — he didn’t pull up early and stand there looking for a play but made the play happen with his aggressiveness.
Nobody has ever been deemed unhealthy for eating too much broccoli. -- Andrew Gordon at RMNB
I know the play you’re talking about, and I was thinking to myself “pass it, Ovi” too. But that was the only time in the game I can recall him doing that. Other times he seemed to be making an effort to get it to Backis to bring it in the zone. And it almost seemed like he waited to fire his shot until Knuble had set up in front (and was able to knock in the rebound).

Dater has pretty much proven to me that he’s the perfect example of “a blind squirrel finds a nut every once in a while.” Most of the time I read what he says and just laugh at how horribly wrong he is. Sure, he writes enough that he occasionally says something that strikes me as intelligent, but I basically don’t read anything he writes anymore because so much of it is crap.
Lockout talk makes me want to go out and choke an old lady - Elliotte Friedman
This is pretty much where I’m at with him. I give him credit for a few things:
1) he’s really dedicated to covering the Avs/NHL in general in ways that shame some of the beat writers in other towns
2) he’s willing to go out on a limb with his opinions, even if they’re wrong 90% of the time
3) he’s pretty good at getting info out of the Avs’ organization, which is Kremlin-esque in its opacity.
And I hear you talk the talk, but I don't see you walk the walk and I still don't believe a thing you say.
1 and 3 deserve credit, but mostly from Avs fans. 2 is double edged, I’ll give credit to people that go out on the limb with opinions that run contrary to the popular discourse if they are well reasoned and not ridiculous. Dater runs against the popular discourse with shit that is so ridiculous that it seems like he either a) really is a moran or b) just wants to show people how cool he is that he won’t just say that same old stuff.

On that point, I hope the Caps suspend Semin if the NHL doesn’t. It’s flat out not acceptable to use your stick as a weapon against someone’s head/neck, which is exactly what he did.
I thought a 2 minute on Liles for his post-whistle cross-checks to Semin’s wrists was also deserved, but the refs got the ejection right. Horrendously irresponsible, reckless play.

Agree completely, that does not belong in hockey. I know the league usually doesn’t suspend first-time offenders but that cross-check really, really deserves a suspension.
I’d think that the league uses the “repeat offender” clause when doling out suspensions to show a pattern. and assumes that when a player does something the first time, it’s possible that it wasn’t intentional (not the cross-check, but aiming for the head). And of course, whether right or wrong, Collie looks for an injury, which there wasn’t (Liles was back in the game on his next shift).
"I would feed them lefts until I was pretty much tired of doing it." - Alan May, JRR, 10.16.2010
That was disappointing all the way around. We were at the game, but the play was moving away from us, so it was hard to see what happened in real time and it was not replayed at VC (or if it was, I missed it).
Other than the obvious ramifications, it looked like Sasha was going to have a good game. He’d had some good chances, a couple of takeaways already, and he drew the one penalty that had been called on the Avs.
I just don’t know what made him snap at Liles so much since I have seen him get whacked far worse in other games and a penalty had been called on Foote for the hook. Only thing I can say about the stick getting to the head is that Liles is only 5’10", so 4 inches shorter. Other than bongo time, I don’t think he’s been ejected before or committed such a penalty. Let’s hope it’s the last time.
Bongos ejection was for not having his fighting straps tied down

Right, but it’s the only other time I can remember him being ejected for anything. And speaking of the straps, I always wonder about that with him because he often has his jersey tucked in in back and never looks like it’s attached.
don’t know what made him snap at Liles
Recall that 28 was out for a stretch last season after…being crosschecked in the small of the back (no penalty). Maybe Liles hit a nerve, literally and figuratively.

Is there video of this anywhere? I sit in the uppers on the opposite side of the ice from where this happened, and the whole exchange looked pretty ordinary to us. I also saw an email from a friend that said it looked like Semin hit the Avs player in the back/shoulder area but his stick slid up to the head as his arms extended. Implying it wasn’t a direct head shot.

I saw it live and again when I got home. It certainly does not look like an intentional cross-check to the head, but rather he extended his arms at chest level (as if to hit him in the back/shoulders) and Liles was bending over/going down, so he got him in the noggin. Stupid play, after the whistle, etc., but not suspendable IMHO.

A side note on the game, NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly was in Ted’s box last night. Wonder what he thought of the non-call on the net being pushed off purposefully by the Avs, and the weird whistle when we had the puck in our o-zone and an Av went down (I thought,, what is this? A pee wee game?), and the too-many quick whistles when we were trying to jam the puck into the net.
If you watched it on CSN, they showed a replay of the Avs guy going down and he did get highsticked (by MP85 I think) and the ref was right to blow the whistle there to make sure the guy wasn’t hurt. We’re lucky we didn’t get a penalty there.

Sorry, I’m a fan of both teams – that was an evenly officiated game. The play in question was a judgment call (O’Byrne was pushed, although I didn’t see the aforementioned high stick), and in the end likely the right call.

Yeah, I was at this game, but the play in question was at the other end of the ice. It looked to me like O’Byrne was trying to steady himself after getting pushed. Not a big deal. It’s not as though the Caps had a goal waived off or anything.

So the question needs to be asked – if Andrew Gordon isn’t in NYC only to take his mom to see Avenue Q, and Semin is available to play, then what are the lines? I’ll wager a guess:
8-19-22
28-85-21
25-90-26
63-15-10
Sit 15,16,17.
Mind you, I write this under the assumption that Gordon will play tonight and no other line-up changes are coming, such as Semin being suspended or 85 being sent back down. As written many times previously here, I am not supportive of sitting anyone on the top lines, unless they are hurt.

I have no problem with Semin just getting a fine for what he did. I think the NHL takes into account the player’s history and as far as I know Semin is not a repeat offender. Maybe they also took into account the fact that Liles wasn’t hurt and what led to Semin’s crosschecking the guy in the first place. Aren’t those the reasons why Gonchar wasn’t suspended or even fined last year for his elbow to Clutterbuck’s head and why Koci was only fined after his major boarding penalty on Green last year and where Green was actually hurt? If other players get the benefit of the doubt for their first offenses then I have no problem with our players getting a break for theirs either.
Lobbies: Green, Carlson, Orlov
I think the NHL takes into account the player’s history and as far as I know Semin is not a repeat offender.
He may not be a repeat offender in terms of suspensions, but he definitely has a reputation as a guy who uses his stick to retaliate when he’s frustrated.
And I hear you talk the talk, but I don't see you walk the walk and I still don't believe a thing you say.
If the game were called according to what might make me furious, NHL discipline would be an even bigger joke than it is. Interestingly enough, the same goes for suspending Semin over yesterday’s Gigantic Incident.

I don’t think a fine in a vacuum is too little. But NHL fines are kind of a joke, I would think, to guys making hundreds of thousands of dollars minimum.
With that in mind, I think this is suspension-worthy. Even if his intent was a cross-check to the middle of the back, it was to the back. If you do that in a game situation it’s supposed to be hitting from behind 5 mins + game misconduct automatically, let alone after a whistle when players are probably even less prepared to take a hit like that.
Anyways, the money I think goes to Players Emergency Relief or some other good cause.

Fahey back down for sure if Green is feeling better. Forgot about Sloan coming back off LTIR. It’s possible that the team called up Gordo just in case Semin was suspended. Unless the stomach flu hit somewhat else, guess he’s SOL. Now what – back on a plane to Charlotte?

I’m pretty sure the difference is length. IR is seven days, LTIR is 24 days or ten games—I think. I could entirely be making all of this up.
I THINK LTIR also has salaray cap implications.

LTIR does have salary cap implications. You can put a guy on LTIR and his salary does not count against the cap in that situation. But for regular IR, it does count.
Rocking the Red for teams on the banks of the Potomac and at the Gateway Arch and Singing the Blues about Hockey.
It still counts while on LTIR, you are just allowed to replace that salary while they are on LTIR, you can’t bank it however, the way that a team could if the player was sent to the AHL.
Aim for the head baby Jesus
The team has to be completely capped out before LTIR has any affect. The team may exceed the salary cap by the amount of the injured players’ salary.

I’d say, give the kid a sweater but they’ve already said Semin will play. But I’d say put the kid on the line with Perreault and Laich and move Semin down to a lower line. Still keep Semin on the special teams and PKl; etc.

I hope Andrew Gordon gets to play. I think the Caps could use a guy who goes to the net and can score. He isn’t the best skater but he can score goals. Why not give him a shot given the drought up front?
The main issue is too many warm bodies on the roster. We’ve got lots of spare part forwards, just none that are good on RW. The team could choose to sit Semin, but he’d remain on the roster and someone would need to move off it. I s’pose the Caps could assign MJ90 to Hershey, but dunno if they’d go there.

And a random piece of information if anyone was thinking about the Winter Classic wine. Because I know someone who was going to be at the shop, I bought a bottle. The label is kinda cool, but the bottles are actually numbered. I thought the wine might be overpriced because of the branding, but now I’m not so sure. I was getting a bottle of wine at a Whole Foods here in Florida the other day, and found the same wine without the branding. It was on sale for $19 from $29. I didn’t buy it, but given that’s its real price, I’m hoping it’s actually a good wine.

That’s the most likely case. That’s downright depressing — the thought of our top defensive pairing on IR.
But why are they calling forwards up when it’s an extra defenseman we need? Do we really need 3 forwards in the press box each night? And if the Caps wanted to teach Semin a lesson and have him sit out, tonight would be the night for it to be done, not some future game.
