One-goal victories
BB had this to say in Vogel’s piece:
"I was telling the guys, ‘We don’t want to win every game by one goal, but it’s great practice,’" says Boudreau. "If you’re pushing everything as far as how you’re going to react if you’re lucky enough to make the playoffs, one-goal games and how you play in them is a real important factor because in the playoffs every game is so close.
"Believe me, as coaches you’d like to have a 4-0 win every now and again, but when you’re playing in these one-goal games and you’re having success it means that the players are buying into what you have to do all the time. Hopefully it continues."
I have been operating under the assumption that, as is largely the case in baseball, the 1-point victory is not a repeatable skill. In other words, have a record that is markedly better or worse than .500 in 1-point games is a sign of either good or bad luck.
But is that indeed the case in hockey?
Before I dive in to test this theory, does anyone know if it has already been done? It seems almost impossible that BtN or CnB would not have looked at this, but a quick Google search doesn’t yield any results.

As a matter of fact, Becca has a post that’s (sorta) on this topic coming up at 11. So everyone do your research now and hold the discussion ‘til then, if that’s cool.

If there was ever a team that’s going to be involved in a shutout, it’s the Rangers in their current state. I think their top line is Anisimov – Dubinsky – Callahan. Yikes. Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with those guys, and they’re all nice enough players…but they should in no way be a top line in the NHL.
And, yes, I know, Dubi has 10 goals. He also has a 28% shooting pct. Somehow I doubt that he figures in the Richard race down the stretch.
On the other hand, they have Hank.
So, yeah, I could see a zero on the board for one of the teams tonight.

Priceless.
Can’t decide what my favorite part is.
I think it might be the part about staying out of the hotel bars.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
I loved the Steinberg piece about fighting over the hotel room remote.
“Dino had kids, I didn’t have kids when I played, and Dino used to want the television off early in the room all the time,” May began. "He’d go up tot the TV and shut it off, or he’d grab the remote control and shut it off. And I couldn’t sleep, on the other hand. I was like a two-to-three hour kind of guy. And he’d try to go to sleep at 10, 11 o’clock.
“So one night he does it, and I finally had enough….He grabs the television remote from me, so I went over and grabbed it. And he came over and tried to grab it [back] and I put him in a headlock until he fell asleep. And [then] I watched television. He never took the remote again.”

a new widget on our Tweet Tweeters page.
The up n’ down slider on the right side of the box around the tweets doesn’t show up in the Ipad version of Safari = Bummer. Otherwise this is a handy dandy thing. Thanks, JP!
The Tweet Tweeters page / widget is cool. Is it possible (perhaps not desirable?) to have the widget search and display all tweets in tweetdom with #Caps referenced?
Also, while I can and will bookmark that Tweet Tweeters page, would it be possible to have it permanently listed over on the top left of the Rink home page (along with Caps Clips, Recaps, etc)? Or is it already there somewhere and I’m just in a deep fog this morning?
Is it possible (perhaps not desirable?) to have the widget search and display all tweets in tweetdom with #Caps referenced?
Possible, yes, but in order for it to be of any value, I think it’s important that it be curated a bit more.
And there’s a button for it in “The Vault” on the left sidebar.

Let’s not underestimate Dubinsky and Callahan, folks – I’ve seen enough of them lately to know that, even if their performances can’t in any way be sustained, right now they’re playing over their heads – think Flash when Ovi is out.
Anyone else going to the game tonight? I can try to snag a ticket nearby so that we actually have some cheering going on.

From the review of the Ovechkin book, the author of the post mentions this:
Obviously, Ovechkin is much flashier than the painfully dull Crosby, but Ovechkin has much more of a physical two-way game than Crosby, who’s often reluctant to put himself into corners and high-traffic areas. Ovechkin’s game is much sounder than Crosby’s.
Funny because Crosby plays more of his game in front of the net than Ovi. Mostly due to the nature of being a center vs. a wing. He also doesn’t strike me as a guy who is shy about going to the corners.
Ovi’s game is “much sounder” than Crosby’s? Disagree. Both are pretty damn sound. You can argue one is better than the other, but not “much” better or “much” sounder overall.
Just trying to capture the spirit of the thing...
I’m not even sure what that’s supposed to mean.

I didn’t read the article, so I have no idea who it’s by, but that quote sounds (and reads) like a CI comment. He/she/it’s clearly not much of an analyst given the judgment of Crosby’s game. I guess all I’m pointing out is, “who else could that be [but a homer]?”
And not this one:

He should have stopped after the Ovi is flashier comment. Love me some Ovi, but better two way game? Um, no. Unless he’s talking about off the ice and then i think it’s a three way game…
Just trying to capture the spirit of the thing...
Kidding aside, Crosby’s 5v5 GAON/60 has been Fleischmann-esque the last couple years.

Crosby, who’s often reluctant to put himself into corners and high-traffic areas.
I freakin’ wish. I can’t stand the guy, but his guts and smarts in traffic can hardly be doubted.
There's no 'i' in "team". But there's a 'nap' in "champion".
That was a pretty dubious line. Crosby is a really tough dude, which is what makes me so angry about the “Cindy” crap.
I hate the jersey he wears, but I give him all the respect in the world.

The whole salt – of – the – earth thing, and the whining, and the sack-punching/dot-mugging/Hank-hacking — these things really grate. But the guy’s a flipping rock on his skates, and he knows his trenchwork just fine.
There's no 'i' in "team". But there's a 'nap' in "champion".
Crosby also scores a ton of garbage goals (which are just as good as flashy ones). Ovechkin’s goals tend to be 20 feet away from the net, while Crosby’s are within 20 feet.
Both are great players who play completely different games. That reviewer — homer or not — doesn’t really know hockey very well.
It’s heartening to see Cox’s book doing so well in sales. For just hockey-related books, “The Ovechkin Project” is ranked 85th right behind “The Making of Slap Shot” and, ironically, another Damien Cox book on Martin Brodeur. The good news for his publisher is that the Ovechkin book is out selling “The Baffled Parent’s Guide to Coaching Youth Hockey”.

About selling tickets to fans of the opposing team – I sold my tickets to the Boston game through the Rink exchange. Sunday, my neighbors told me there were Bruins fans sitting in my seats (well behaved, but still…). Sometimes, you do all you can, and it still doesn’t work out.
"It's always good to have vikings."
For every game that I haven’t been able to go to this year (about 6 so far — I was on vacation for two weeks), I’ve put my tickets up on the Rink Rat Ticket Exchange. Not a single person has emailed or PM’d me, and I list them for WELL below face value in order to help out fellow Rink Rats. So I’ve also been listing them on StubHub, and they may very well be going to fans of the opposing teams. But guess what — I don’t care anymore. It is way too easy and convenient to email them to StubHub and not have to do anything and see the money magically appear in my PayPal account. As gfcaps fan says, sometimes you do all you can. You people don’t want opposing fans? Buy some friggin tickets!

I’ve always used RRTE when I’m looking to buy tickets and have had great success. I wonder if the problem for people like you trying to sell is that there are already so many STHs on this site, that on RRTE there are more people trying to sell rather than looking to buy?

I also have other outlets where I try to sell them. We have a group in our section where we offer them to each other for friends and family, and I’ve sold a couple that way. I’ve also bought extras that way a couple of times.

For what it’s worth, I can’t afford to sit in your seats, even well below face value. That may be true of many who are looking on the secondary market.
Eat, drink, and be merry! And then drink some more.
I fall into this category; I can afford the occasional game in the upper deck at or near cost, but it’s just a non-starter to go sit in the lower bowl or club for anything like a reasonable price. When I graduate and (knock on wood) find a real job, that probably changes a bit, but right now, there’s just no way.

I’ve resigned myself to games against at Atlanta or Toronto, when the secondary market price is around $20 for uppers and will watch the Penguins games from my comfy-ass couch and spend the money on a big-ass bottle of Delirium Tremens instead.

I know you’re not addressing this specifically, but I want to make it abundantly clear that I’m deeply grateful to everyone who makes or has made their tickets available below face. I might get to a couple of games a year if I needed to pay face to get in the door; it’s been a real joy to go to ~9 between this season and last and not something I’d otherwise have an opportunity to do. At the same time, I understand that prices went up and that a lot of ticket decisions are made at the margin. ~$400 extra per seat is a lot of dough to shell out for the exact same seats you had last season. If you’ve got a pair of seats, $800 is a lot of really good beer, or a new couch, or most of a pretty good laptop.
This is my long-winded way of saying I totally get decisions to re-sell on the secondary market and a hearty thanks to anyone who’s taken a bath to get my ass to a game.

In a town like DC, you’re going to find a huge market for fans of opposing teams, though. It’s something that you’re going to have to deal with if you’re going to sell to unknowns.
A lot of my friends happen to be Penguins\Flyers\Rangers\and Islanders fans. I’ve never given a Pens friend a Pens tickets but I have taken Flyers fans to Caps\Flyers games with me or just given them my tickets at cost. (I know they are paying to watch their team lose anyway =)
Some friends were in my seats on Sunday but they happen to be Flyers fans. I don’t really care if some blogger isn’t happy about it. I pay for them, I’ll do what I want.
In all honesty the ticket pricing and hikes on STH will make this issue worse going forward. The teams with the biggest opposition following are some of the highest priced games. If you have tickets you pay $40 each for at STH cost and the game is $95 it’s almost stupid not to sell them at face value and enjoy the game elsewhere.
Think twice before you speak, and then you may be able to say something more insulting than if you spoke right out at once.
I’m with you on the first part. When I share my extra seats it’s because those people are hockey fans. How they behave reflects on me, and I’d sure rather my seats be used by a group of guys in Rangers’ jerseys who know not to lean forward, than to a gaggle of red-clad band-wagoners who do a running commentary for the full 60 minutes. My section-mates (4 mid-twenties erskine-esque hockey players, and 4 Backstrom loving, life-long female hockey fans) would give me no end of grief if a group of A-holes used my seats and ruined the game for them.
That said, I rarely use the secondary market. FOR ME, and speaking only as a personal choice, When I got full season tickets, I told myself, “if I have to sell some of my tickets to cover the cost of my other tickets, then I shouldn’t do this.”
Rather amusingly, in the past two years I’ve become able to afford better seats, and I’ve been trying to move to the Club Level near my current seats. No such luck. :-(

I totally agree. Back when my cost was around $20, I almost never looked to sell my tickets, but $30 is a big jump, and if I can get $75 for those tickets, you can damn sure bet I’m going to do it. If Caps fans want those tickets, then pay up.

I’ve opened a can of worms. :-)
The hike in STH cost is a bit of an issue. It’s not unfair at all, as the price of success, but it’s going to make people want to recover some of that cost. Also, 41 games is a lot. As much as I love going to the games, I don’t mind missing a few.
"It's always good to have vikings."
When I go to 35+ games, I get burnt out come playoff time.

Nah, it makes good sense. Like anything else, if you do something “too frequently” (which is wholly subjective) it just doesn’t have as much impact towards the end. At any rate, every time I have to miss a game I’m twice as eager to attend the next one.

I’m not too happy that you ended up selling to opposing fans inadvertently. The whole purpose of that site was to only sell to Caps fans. Do you think the person that bought them from you re-sold them?

Interesting fact:
Name the only Washington goaltender who has played more than 60 games in a season as a professional (including juniors).
If you guessed either Semyon Varlamov or Michal Neuvirth, you are, sadly, incorrect. The answer is Braden Holtby, who did it twice in Juniors.
Looks like DJ is in the lineup tonight. Over/Under on how many shifts before he and the Boogyman engage in a meaningless (but probably entertaining) bout? I’d say second shift together.
Again, I wish they would announce their intentions before the game and allow an official scorer to score the bout. Loser gets and extra two minutes.

Yeah, they’ll get me a bazillion dollar contract even though I’m declining terribly and am probably not an every day player any more. But I’m a “True Yankee”.

He’s going to get paid simply because he’s Cap’n Jeets. If I had to take a guess, I’d say they’re going to be paying based on the number of pointless jump throws he makes from short.

Off topic, but he’s not quite the everday player anymore. His glove and range are suffering. He still has some pop left in his bat, but I don’t see him starting large numbers of games next season after being one of the worst defensive SS last year.
I don’t have much tolerance for stupid. Or cheese on food that doesn’t need it. -duck
Bullshit. He’s 36 and coming off the absolute WORST offensive season he’s ever had. EVER.
In the most PA’s he’s had since 2005 (739) he dropped .279/10/67. And even though those are BS stats, those are still pretty bad.
Want more? Career-low OBP (.340), career-low SLG (.370), career-low OPS (.710), career-low OPS+ (90, meaning he’s below replacement level). Struck out more times than he has since 2005.

And the Yankees will probably give him three and 45-60.

If he plays 150 games, which he will, then he’s an everyday player.
Lockout talk makes me want to go out and choke an old lady - Elliotte Friedman
He definitely won’t start 150 games unless he invents a time machine or something. His defense was awful last year and his bat wasn’t much better. The “projections” seem to think he’ll return to form this year, but how they figured that from steadily declining stats is beyond me.
I don’t have much tolerance for stupid. Or cheese on food that doesn’t need it. -duck
Because he hasn’t had a steadily declining stats.
His OPS his last 10 years:
858
794
844
823
839
900
840
771
871
710
Where is the trend there? His numbers have remained remarkably random, fluctuating between 771 and 900 (other than his brutal 2010). What that tells me is that his last season was the flukiest of them all.
I would expect his OPS to be at or above 800 next season.
Way OT, move it over.

What is the average OPS for a SS in the major leagues last year? 669. So even with the lowest OPS of his career, he was 40 points better than the average. Just because he didn’t do as well as he has in the past (and was grossly overpaid), doesn’t mean he’s no longer an everyday player.
Average is not the right number to use there. That number is severely skewed by some awful SS (like Cesar Izturis) who couldn’t hit off of a tee.
I don’t have much tolerance for stupid. Or cheese on food that doesn’t need it. -duck
Here are the OPS of all the shortstops in the AL who played the most games at that position for their teams:
793
744
721
714
710
692
687
675
673
662
643
636
572
545
Again, he’s not worth $22 million dollars. He’s probably not worth $6. His defense — which was never good — is getting worse. But he’s still an everyday player, and a Hall of Famer who had his worst season of his career.
His defense — which was never good — is getting worse.
And yet he just won his fifth Gold Glove today!
(What a joke.)
Eat, drink, and be merry! And then drink some more.
Massively OT, move it over.

Laich is so much more replaceable than Semin it’s not funny. And if there are no shortage of bidders for Laich and someone wants to pay him $4.5m? Au revoir, Brooksie.

Indeed. I’d choke on paying him 3.5 for any kind of term, forget 4.5.

Context is this: he and Lyle “Spector” Richardson were arguing about whether Semin would stay with the Caps next year. Spector thought that Semin would get 8 mil if he hit the open market. Proteau didn’t.
I don’t think that Laich is less replaceable than Semin. I also don’t think Laich commands that much. He’s probably going to put up 45-55 points again this year, and if some team wants to pay him over 3.5 million (and arguably, he’s not worth that), then let them do that.
I don’t see Semin getting 8 million though, mostly because I don’t see multiple teams bidding that high for him.
I can’t see anyone giving Semin $8 million even if they wanted to. Based on this year, it looks like teams are tapped out, even if the cap goes up another couple of million.
"It's always good to have vikings."
It has been over 2 years since anyone got $8MM per year, hasn’t it? Eric Staal? Even Lecavalier’s ridiculous contract carries less than $8MM per year against the cap.
Not a chance in hell Semin gets a franchise-carrying contract, not when the best word to describe him has consistently been “enigmatic”. He’ll be lucky to get 7MM long term in the open market, or 6MM from the Caps.
You had me at no problem.
You can look at it this way: who’s the better hockey player, Alex Semin or Marian Gaborik? I think you have to go with Gaborik; they’re both injury-prone offensive dynamos who can play very good defense and carry your team’s scoring burden for long stretches. But Gaborik is just a better player, or has been historically. If Gaborik got 7.5 mil from Glen Sather, what do you think the odds are that Alex Semin gets more than that from a reasonable GM with cap space?

I’m not sure I have Gaborik on the same defensive level as Semin, but I agree with your broader point.
The thing that will determine it is the playoffs. Look what kind of boost Scuderi got from LAK. If Semin goes on a torrid pace in the playoffs he’ll have suitors. I still think 8 is a pipe dream unless it’s like a 2-3 year deal (even then it’s unlikely), but he could get 7 for sure. A bad playoffs means we are sunk early again and he’ll be stuck in the 6 mill. ballpark.

That’s just nonsense.
Burton, you should listen to me more often when it comes to the Preds. I was right on Suter, and it looks like I’m right on Dekanich. You scoffed when I hyped him, but now he’s got your first round pick buried in the ECHL and he’s just a Gooback injury from being in the NHL.
Lockout talk makes me want to go out and choke an old lady - Elliotte Friedman
By the way, it wasn’t defensive issues so much as a shocking powerplay drought and the otherworldly goaltending of Jaroslav Halak that proved to be the big difference in the Montreal series this past spring.

It was good. I laughed at this even though I don’t agree with it.
Washington lacks tough, shutdown defensemen (sorry, plus-minus machine Jeff Schultz doesn’t count)
Think twice before you speak, and then you may be able to say something more insulting than if you spoke right out at once.
Yeah, it depends on what you define it as. Is Schultz the tough bruiser people want? No. Can he hang with talented players? Yeah.

OT: Stingrays Hockey on Saturday in Reading, PA
A heads up for people that go to Hershey games and/or live near Baltimore, etc., and might be interested in a roadtrip.
SC Stingrays play Reading Royals Saturday and Sunday in Reading.
Hershey plays at home Friday and Sunday, but is on the road Saturday (at Syracuse.)
Caps play on the road Saturday and have a home game Sunday at 5pm.
So Saturday night hockey with some driving required…Stingrays at Royals, 7pm.
Advice: Call the Royals, don’t use Tmaster for tickets.
Of course, Friday in Hershey, Saturday in Reading is an option for those who are devoted.

Looks like Hershey’s an injured mess and very happy to have Johansson. He’s centering the top line tonight.
"It's always good to have vikings."
Yes, also, Kugryshev has been recalled to Hershey. No surprise as it appeared the assignment was just for the 3 in 3 last weekend. Kroll was reportedly going to be recalled as well, but sounds like he may have gotten hurt this weekend in SC according to Andrew Miller, the SC beat writer.
Aucoin knee injury
Perreault lower body injury
Nycholat upper body injury
Pretty sure no healthy scratches in Charlotte for tonight.
