Thank goodness we play today. Skins on a bye week I’d be going crazy if I didn’t have Caps/Flyers on at 5.

Everything ends badly...otherwise it wouldn't end.

Even if we whip the Flyers 7-0 tonight, everyone in Philly will say…“we’ll still take em in the playoffs.”

Interesting that it’s the Steelers, a franchise in the sports league that pulls in the most money of all sports, is the one not wanting to pay.

by Capcrazy77 on Nov 7, 2010 12:21 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t really fault the Steelers here. Are the Steelers making any money off the gate? If anything it should be the NHL or the Penguins that pick up the tab.

by Yoshietree on Nov 7, 2010 1:53 PM EST up reply actions

I’m sure they’re making some money off renting the stadium out.

Pledge Drive 2010-2011: SO KIDS CAN!! Help build a playground

by RedBirdie on Nov 7, 2010 1:56 PM EST up reply actions

The article says that the Steelers lease the stadium. If that lease is anything like the one that Ted/the Caps had at Verizon I’d tend to doubt the Steelers see a dime.

by Yoshietree on Nov 7, 2010 1:57 PM EST up reply actions

Exactly. A Pittsburgh municipal corporation owns the stadium, the Steelers rent it out so they don’t really have a stake in the Winter Classic except insofar as it may affect the quality of the field, which they don’t even care about.

Against the Bruins, here were the young guns’ TOI/shift

1:01 Ovechkin
1:01 Green
0:51 Backstrom
0:48 Semin

Good enough? Is this what we’ve been looking for?

(Mind you, there was only one opportunity for a long power play shift — the extended 3 minute penalty in the 1st, where Ovi and Green played a 2 minute shift that included the entire minute of 5-on-3 action. The other power play extended over a period change, so it wasn’t a single shift).

Atta dinnin stick a who!

by Gould Old Days on Nov 7, 2010 12:21 PM EST reply actions

Better, but I’d still like Green and Ovechkin to cut down the extra :10 to get down to the Backstrom and Semin area.

Noted statistician that I am (not!), knowing about the two minute power play shifts, is it more meaningful to only examine 5 on 5 shifts, or even just non-power play shifts?

"It's always good to have vikings."

by gfcaps fan on Nov 7, 2010 12:30 PM EST up reply actions

For that game, it’s easiest to do with Ovi, who didn’t take any SH shifts. Take away his three power play shifts (2:09, 1:04 of which 0:29 was PP, and 1:20) and the average for the rest of his shifts is 56.6 seconds.

Like SME said, it’d probably be better to get him down below 50 for ES average, but this seems better than what we were seeing last year.

Lockout talk makes me want to go out and choke an old lady - Elliotte Friedman

by Rob Parker on Nov 7, 2010 1:14 PM EST up reply actions

One thing that might make some sense is that at home, Ovi plays two periods on the opposite side of the ice from the bench. If all arenas are configured like VC, then on the road he plays two periods closest to the bench. Takes longer to get to the bench plus you need to be extra cautious when you change to avoid getting caught on a bad change.

Wondering if his ice time is different at home than on the road.

Just trying to capture the spirit of the thing...

by dcsportsfan1 on Nov 7, 2010 1:54 PM EST up reply actions

Huh? The rinks and benches are symmetrical, are they not? Both teams start periods 1 and 3 with the bench nearest their D zone and period 2 with the bench nearest the O zone. I don’t think home or away has any effect on that, no?

by Knee high to a duck on Nov 7, 2010 2:36 PM EST up reply actions

You’re basically right. I think there may be some difference in bench length and distance between the benches depending on the rink. That makes more of a difference for offsides than it does for line changes though.

by Rob Parker on Nov 7, 2010 2:38 PM EST up reply actions

I think dcsportsfan meant at home, periods 1 and 3 LW is right next to the bench, while on the road, in periods 1 and 3 it’s AO’s off-wing (RW).

Interesting numbers. It doesn’t really quantify the “cute” factor, and I wonder if those numbers would hold up if BB didn’t break them up every time they get cute. In any event, Semin is clearly the most talented player that could be on that line, but the bigger concern isn’t making that line a dynamo, but trying to maintain a semblance of scoring balance. The second line probably really suffers without Semin.

It reminds me of Anaheim having a Perry-Ryan-Getzlaf (not in those positions) line. Except Anaheim has a better second line center, and Selanne can still bring some good offense.

Selanne is pretty underrated at this point in his career. He can’t eat the minutes he used to but he’s still a machine on the PP and a real solid secondary scorer. I’d sure rather have him than a lot of the guys we have on the Caps.

No doubt, I’d probably take Selanne over the Caps’ secondary scorers. I think the extent to which people say Anaheim is top loaded on offense is overblown.

That’s a good point. Neil I also think used full Corsi% instead of just “tied” or “close,” so all those times SOB went out when trailing probably boosts the numbers a bit. That being said, I looked up Corsi% with score close for 8-19-28 and the line takes a bigger hit without AO or 19 than without Semin.

So far, the second line without Semin has been above water, but only just. First priority right now is to get AO going, and since Semin is better than that at Knuble, Semin should be 1RW for the time being.

My blog and Twitter, featuring coverage of the most unpredictable team in the NHL.

by red army line on Nov 7, 2010 2:26 PM EST up reply actions

I agree that AO needs jumpstarting and Knuble won’t do that. Green and Semin have been the two best skaters for the Caps so far this season, and I don’t think it’s particularly close.

Good point about the score effects, though I think it would be important to know what % of the time SOB is together to come from behind and what % is when they are tied or ahead. I am not shocked that 8 and 19 are more important to the top line.

Lockout talk makes me want to go out and choke an old lady - Elliotte Friedman

Fully agree with you about Semin and Green. They’ve both been markedly better than their performances from last year, and also than the rest of the team.

It’s not perfect to use Corsi as a proxy for TOI, but I can’t think of anything else right now.

Score tied: 218 Corsi events (out of 2800 for the team)
Caps ahead: 149 Corsi events (1902 total)
Caps trailing: 128 Corsi events (942 total)

I’m not sure how score effects play into the number of Corsi events generated.

Oddly enough, I’m feeling confident about the Caps’ chances going into this one. The Flyers have won 7 in a row, but in reading between the lines on the game recap, they probably didn’t deserve to win against the Isle last night. We all know what the end of a win streak looks like; it starts with winning when you don’t play all that well. With the Flyers playing yesterday, I’m feeling like the Caps should salt this one away.
