The video. I don’t know what’s scarier, the Russians with the guns or Sasha groping Mike Green.
The penguin’s pretty hilarious, though.

I tweeted it, but it’s another NHL Rohrshach test – people see what they want to. Case in point:
PensBurgh: “looks more and more like incidental contact every time I watch it”
Blueshirt Banter: “Yes, Sidney Crosby slew footed Ryan Callahan in typical punk-like Crosby fashion.”
To me, it’s a bad hit, but more like what Mike Green did to Eric Staal in that first Carolina game – the result of muscling for position – than a pure, intentionally dirty slewfoot.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Intentional or not (I tend to believe not), either it’s a penalty on Sid or it’s nothing on either. How the hell does Callahan get the penalty?
And as other have noted, if it’s Ovi instead of Crosby, it’s a suspension (probably not, but you’d never hear the end of it).
"It's always good to have vikings."
Well, AO would be a repeat offender and Sid isn’t. That matters.
And I didn’t even realize that Cally got a penalty there and Sid didn’t. Not good officiating, that.

And if you never get suspended cause you’re not a repeat offender, you’ll never get added to the repeat offenders list and never get suspended cause you’ll never be a repeat offender.

Agreed, but the underlying point is valid – if you don’t get dinged b/c you have no priors, you’ll never get priors and won’t ever get dinged. That’s why I think it’s important to fine him here so there’s something to point to down the road.

Well nothing was called here on Sid, and Colie fined AO based on his being a “dangerous” hit, so presumably the degree of danger matters.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I don’t know. You could argue it, and I’m sure Pens fans will, but the entire concern with a slew foot is that you drop a guy on the back of his head with no way to protect himself. That’s why Niskanen missed a bunch of time with a concussion after a slew foot last year. You could say “AO could have scrambled his brains AND broken his ankle,” but I don’t think it makes it that much different.
Lockout talk makes me want to go out and choke an old lady - Elliotte Friedman
"How many penalty minutes do I have this year, if I’m that dirty?," said Crosby, who has 15 penalty minutes this season. "I mean, please. Show me all those dirty plays. It’s a battle and he falls. I think Dubi has done his fair share of things out there that are questionable. I guess he’s talking again. But I’m not surprised. "It’s a battle (with Callahan)," Crosby added. "He’s holding me going up ice and I’m trying to push him off. Is it that calculated? I’m trying to get to the net. I’m not worried about that kind of thing. If I tripped him, I tripped him. Am I dirty hockey player? C’mon. I think Dubi is smarter than that."
In other words, if you think the play was dirty, Crosby thinks you’re not very smart. Ugh.

Like I said, I can’t view any of those videos, but I have a good idea what they are from.
I have been very critical of Sid’s slashes and penalties of frustration in the past. It has actually led to arguments between my friends and I. However, Crosby is almost a different person on the ice this year. He doesn’t show his frustration nearly as often, I’m not sure he has more than 1 slashing penalty this year, and he has been keeping his mouth shut a helluva lot more than he has in the past.
Unfortunately, I don’t think he’ll ever shake his reputation, no matter what he does in seasons to come. Much like Ovechkin.

The problem is he’s so polished and media practiced that when he does veer off the rails and say something “interesting” it’s because he’s overly emotional and therefore says borderline moronic things. He hasn’t found that middle ground yet.

Crosby is not a nice guy. Just ask the Pensblog.
Follow that link, look at the cross checks, slashes, and not-so-little shots he’s taken.
Not sure how that guy can get the benefit of the doubt. I feel certain the slew-foot was intentional.
He ought to get at least a fine for that one.

by fat_daddyo on Nov 30, 2010 7:47 AM EST up reply actions 2 recs
But that’s different! Crosby’s plays are only dirty when you’re doing a fun little dirty players article! When he’s facing a fine it can’t be dirty!
The Crosby slew-foot definitely deserved a penalty. I actually didn’t see it until this morning. However, I definitely don’t think it was intentional.
Look at the screen shot that a Red Wings fan posted, defending Crosby (in the comments section):
http://www.kuklaskorner.com/index.php/hockey/comments/video_you_make_the_call/
I know it doesn’t say much, but it helps to show that there was no intent, in my opinion.
How Callahan got a penalty instead of Crosby is beyond me, but I really don’t think it was dirty.
Like I said above, I don’t think Sid’s intent was to level a dirty hit, but any time you use your leg behind another guy’s leg for leverage in throwing him down backwards, it’s a bad hit (and I think there’s definitely a distinction between “bad” and “dirty” hits).
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Agreed. A tripping penalty should have been called on the spot. I also think a fine could be warranted here. Suspension? I don’t think so.
Did anyone see later in the game where Avery tried to slew-foot Crosby? That didn’t go so well for Aves.
Nope but now I’m definately going to watch the next rangers/pens games to see Avery try to get some revenge after he’s had some youtube time
It’s funny, because Avery went to give Sid a slew-foot, Crosby knocked him to the ground, and Sid got the penalty.
Crosby skated to the box with his mouth shut. I think it was the ref’s way of making up for the earlier mistake.

I definitely don’t think it was intentional.
Definately not. Not more than a couple controversial calls against the Caps the past two seasons. When your weight shifts backwards on ice and you’re trying to get your balance, sometimes your legs just fly up. It happens
But at least there’s been enough discussion that the NHL probably took notice (despite the fact that they won’t do anything). This is probably enough for them to put him secretly “on warning” in case he ever does something dirty AND intentional later on in the season
Yeah, it’s a hockey play. A dangerous hockey play, but a hockey play nonetheless.
Usually, the most egregious slew-foots (feels weird to type…slew-feet?) are ones initiated by the guilty player, when they come from behind the victim, put their leg behind theirs and push them backwards.
In this case, Callahand initiated the contact, and I feel Crosby was just defending himself.
It was still dangerous though, that’s for sure.

Oh, I think that was an intentional trip by Crosby. He sticks his right foot out to the side and clips Callahan’s boot. Perhaps not an intentional slew foot, but he intended to trip him up. If he really wanted to get by Callahan cleanly, he would not have stuck his skate out wide like that. How he didn’t get penalized is beyond me.
I also think the interference is a bit of a touchy call too. Perhaps technically it was but the guys were so far from the play and were essentially jostling for position. I would liken it to a defensive back and wide receiver making incidental contact on a pass play.

I just think he was trying not to fall….but I am also a Penguins fan.
When you are taking or initiating contact, you get low, bend your legs, and widen your stance. I think that’s what Crosby was doing when Callahan initiated the contact.
Sort of like how Ovechkin has a wide base when he goes to hit someone, and then they move and he gets accused of sticking his leg out.

Agreed, but these guys were racing towards a puck not bracing for a hit. If you are trying to get around someone and get to the puck, I would think you would not want a wide base but would want to keep your legs under you.

Link, I appreciate you defending your boy, but I don’t buy this for a second. The play is just too slow, and Crosby is too good an athlete. I don’t buy unintentional and I don’t buy accidental. He stuck his skate under Callahan’s skate and pushed.
I also don’t think it’s that big a deal. For one thing, Calahan falls on Sid’s hip before hitting the ice. I don’t think that’s an accident either. Slewfoots are dangerous when the back of a guy’s helmet is the first thing to hit the ice, or when someone wrenches a knee. There was no chance of either here. There was damned little risk of injury. It was surgical as far as slew foots go.
But don’t try to sell me “he didn’t mean to do it.” Compare this one with Ovi-on-Peverley, where there’s less than half a second from contact to Peverley hitting the ice. That’s what it looks like when someone takes a bad angle and accidentally gets caught up. That’s unintentional, and in my opinion more dangerous because it’s uncontrolled and near the boards. Peverley’s lucky he didn’t hit his head or twist a leg against the wall.
Sid and Callahan are locked for a good three seconds – an eternity on the ice. And Sid lays him down smooth as silk. Should have given him a pillow. He meant to do it, but there was definitely no intent to injure.

I’ll check it out again. I really only got one good look at it before work, so now I can’t watch streaming media.
It’s also hard to compare this to the Ovechkin – Peverley incident. Didn’t Ovechkin initiate the contact, then they got tangled and fell?
He bull-rushed in to where Peverley was going after a puck against the boards. Intended to check his shoulder — would have just been an ordinary battle on the boards. But he got his foot behind Peverley’s and knocked him backwards.

I just think he was trying not to fall….but I am also a Penguins fan.
Holy crap no. Where in Laura Stamm’s Power Skating is there a chapter called “Trying Not to Fall” that includes hooking your leg around the back of your opponent, getting your elbow in front of his chest and moving them simultaneously in the opposite direction.
That was a slew-foot, man. Clear as day. As was the Ovechkin play. They both deserved 2 minute penalties.
And I hear you talk the talk, but I don't see you walk the walk and I still don't believe a thing you say.
I admitted a half-dozen times that it should have been a tripping penalty, and I did call it a slew-foot.
I was just arguing about the intention and “dirtyness.”
Either Crosby is a shitty skater or it was intentional. Since we know Crosby isn’t a shitty skater…
As for dirty, any play that sends an opponent’s feet flying out from under him and his head falling toward the ice is dirty in my book.
And I hear you talk the talk, but I don't see you walk the walk and I still don't believe a thing you say.
D’ohboy, let’s look at facts versus opinions.
Your opinion is that the play was dirty. My opinion is that it wasn’t. Can’t prove it either way.
Facts? Crosby is a good, sweet, Canadien boy. Ovechkin is a heartless, Russian, monster. Therefore, Crosby didn’t intend to do that and it wasn’t dirty, while Ovechkin meant to and it was dirty.
It’s science.

I watched it last night, and I wasn’t clear on the intent.
But – the bottom line is that Crosby’s foot swung through and hit Callahan’s legs in the back and knocked Callahan over. Thus it’s a slew foot and a penalty.
Lots of penalties happen without intent. We’ll never know intent. Only Crosby knows that.
“Dirtyness” is subjective, not objective. The fact that Crosby slew-footed Callahan, whatever the intent, is, to me, objectively clear.
Life With Spidey -- a blog about sports, travel, work, family and fun.

I’m in New Jersey for work and was watching the game on TV in a bar (my hotel room didn’t have MSG). They replayed the trip about 10 times (no exaggeration), and as I couldn’t hear the announcers, I thought that the point of the constant replays was to show the hypocrisy of how Callahan got the penalty for something that looked like two guys fighting for position coming down the ice.
All those 10 times, I didn’t see a slewfoot, and I didn’t know why they kept replaying it.
This morning, as I’m reading more about it, I watched it again, and my opinion has changed a little, but not a lot. They’re still fighting to position and in the process of Crosby trying to get away from Callahan, he shifts his body to try and shed him. He likely knew that Callahan would trip and used his legs to support him, but, to me, it wasn’t a dangerous play or an intent to injure.
This wasn’t a play where Callahan was unable to defend himself.
I would’ve given Crosby 2 for tripping and Callahan 2 for interference.
Of course, I’m surprised that no one has posted this yet.

A little off-topic but was anyone else disappointed that the Caps didn’t get in on the Matt Hunwick trade yesterday where all the AVS had to give up was a prospect?

Not nearly equivalent. Think somewhere between Orlov and Alzner in terms of upside for Cohen and you’re closer.
Perhaps it’s possible that the Avs saw something they didn’t like in Cohen down in Lake Erie, but prima facie, this was a fucking horrible trade for the Avs.

Holy Crap the Avs got bent over and Avery’d on that trade. Cohen is, if not a blue chip prospect, pretty damn close. Hunwick is an undersized, marginal 4/5 guy.
Horrible trade for the Avs, especially considering that the B’s had NO leverage, since they had to unload someone for cap room.
And I hear you talk the talk, but I don't see you walk the walk and I still don't believe a thing you say.
The interesting thing is, isn’t Hunwick a puck moving defenseman, much like Liles and Quincey?

Yeah. On MHH yesterday they described Hunwick as “a poor man’s John-Micheal Liles.”
Which is ironic, since the Avs already have JM Liles, and the really poor man’s JM Liles, Kyle Cumiskey.

It’s even weirder once you consider the fact that they can’t stash Hunwick or many of the other guys down in Lake Erie. So now they’ve got Liles, Hannan, Foote*, Quincey, Cumiskey*, O’Byrne, Shattenkirk, Hunwick and Wilson in the NHL. (* denotes injured)
Can’t send Liles, Hannan, Foote, Quincey, O’Byrne, or Hunwick down. Presumably, they drop Wilson, since Shattenkirk is one of their better defensemen right now.
What a dumb trade.
And I hear you talk the talk, but I don't see you walk the walk and I still don't believe a thing you say.

I dunno. O’Byrne has looked serviceable in the time that I’ve seen him. Admittedly, that’s a small sample, but right now I’d take him over either of our 6/7 guys. I’ll agree that he never looked very good in MTL though, so I’m waiting for the other foot to drop.
As for Hannan, I don’t think he’s got much trade value, his contract is steep and he’s got an NMC. The problem with the steep contract is actually from the Avs’ end – if they don’t bring back salary the other way, they’ll fall below the cap floor.
The odd man out in my opinion is Kyle Quincey. He’s got PP ability. On many teams, he could probably step in and be a 2/3 D, with upside to be a #1-type on a thin blueline. On the Avs, he’s a bit of a spare part given the development of Shattenkirk and Holos.
Quincey’s the classic case of “more valuable to someone else than he is to us,” and those guys typically get traded.
And I hear you talk the talk, but I don't see you walk the walk and I still don't believe a thing you say.

Good, solid skater. A little undersized, but plays bigger than his measurements.
Smart defensively, but really sharp offensively. Has a knack for finding seams on the ice and being where the puck is going to end up. Can finish well with a good shot.
I think he compares well to Alzner, Carlson and Subban. He doesn’t have the offensive upside of Carlson, and he’s not quite as smooth a skater as Alzner, but he’s close.

Junkies to Laich
“Does a shootout goal count for your stats?’
Facepalm. I understand that they don’t understand the sport and aren’t going to at any point, but at least don’t ask questions that make it blatantly obvious.
That and half the questions were about who pulls the most tail on the team, because we know Brooks Laich is Caps’ biznasty.
I like the Junkies interviews… I think anyone listening to their show for insight on the team or the game is looking in the wrong place. Sure, some of us would like to know more than who pulls the most tail, but sometimes the awkward questions make the players seem more like an average guy.
by JimCareyFanClub on Nov 30, 2010 9:30 AM EST up reply actions
To me, interviews like that are why they’re floundering in the ratings. The difference here between a normal interview and a hockey interview is that they literally know jack shit about hockey, so they ask life questions that usually hit dead ends quick – which also leads to quicker interviews, less questions, and an unsatisfied listener.
I guess I feel like I’ve gotten to know these players quite well over the years and we’re past the “he he ha ha, he asked a sex question to a sports player” thing.
Those interviews are not for hockey fans. They are for football/basketball/baseball fans who do not know shit about hockey, and for them, these interviews are informative. They’re also great exposure for the team and the sport.
That said, the Junkies are morons who know jack shit about hockey.
You had me at no problem.
They’re entertaining. You don’t listen to them for their hockey knowledge or even any sports knowledge outside of football to be honest. They’re just entertaining is all. I understand the hate because fans like us (IE the lunatic fringe of the Caps fanbase) get frustrated when big sports personalities around here don’t know the sport, but some will just never care that much.
I think anyone listening to their show for insight on the team or the game is looking in the wrong place

The ESPN article linked to here has the right title, but the content is completely different…
When we started the Thanksgiving weekend, I doubt anyone would have thought that young referee Ghislain Hebert would make much news. After all, I’m not sure Hebert is a household name even in his own household.
Hebert did create a stir, though, when he whistled star Philly D Chris Pronger for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty in overtime of Friday afternoon’s Flyers-Flames game in the City of Brotherly Love — wiping out an apparent game-winning goal. It was a newsworthy/controversial call because it was the first time we’ve seen an enforcement of the “Sean Avery rule.”

Oh… looks like you have to be an ESPN Insider (read: paying customer) to read past the part about Avery and Hebert.

THN.com has learned that billionaire Terry Pegula has signed a letter of intent to buy the Buffalo Sabres from Tom Golisano for about $150 million.
Pegula is the founder and CEO of East Resources, one of the largest privately held companies in the United States. A graduate of Penn State University, he and his wife Kim, recently donated $88 million to the school to help fund a new arena and establish a Division I hockey program.
I had heard rumblings that the Sabres were for sale, but I thought a couple of people had shot it down. So this is something of a surprise. That makes three NHL teams in ownership flux (Buffalo, Dallas, and the Coyotes) on top of two others who need to attract major investors (St. Louis, Carolina). Oy.
This isn’t going to change anything for the Sabres short term. Long term, they have an owner with deeper pockets who might be willing to spend to the Cap to bring a winner to Buffalo.

No big deal. As soon as he sees what he got in Ups and Downs, then he’ll be out on the ice.

Gotta admit, I’m kinda enjoying the 5pm games. Everything’s over and done with by 730. I feel like I’m on the west coast.

Er, I meant Saturday, sorry :P I was at practice on Saturday and he wasn’t out there.
If anyone needs me, I'll be at Kettler.
Missed that. Perhaps we should then call off the rampant speculation.

I don’t know, is Malkin really good enough to be our 2C? I mean…he’d have to unseat Flash.
If anyone needs me, I'll be at Kettler.
I may be a bit more risk-seeking than some of you, but I’d be willing to give Geno a try out at 2C, just for a look-see.

Speaking of the big droog, Malkin is on pace for 72 points this year , 33rd best in the league, 3rd on the team after Kris Letang and Sid, with a shooting % of 6.96%. Surprising.

Eh, not too surprising. Other than two monster seasons he’s been pretty inconsistent.

Depends on whether you think the comparable in that salary range (Crosby) is fairly paid. Sid I think is massively underpaid.
My blog and Twitter, featuring coverage of the most unpredictable team in the NHL and where we defend Mike Green, Alex Ovechkin, and Alexander Semin until the bitter end. That is to say, when someone tries to call BS on the Corsi numbers.

I don’t know about massively. Massively compared to what he could get on the open market, sure, but the same goes for Ovechkin and Backstrom. $8.7 mil is more than all but a handful of players earn.

Sid I think is massively underpaid.
Yeah, but he had great non-salary perks…like not paying rent by living in Mario’s basement.

hey now, he moved out. Peerless even posted a picture over the summer of Sid’s new place…..
oh, yes, this place. Beautiful! Very Pittsburgh, no?

When I see a shooting % that low for a forward, it screams of bad luck. His average before this season was nearly 13%, so I think that more than anything, he’s just been snakebit.
Especially for a player as skilled as Malkin is.

well we got a D…. dont know anything about him….
Anyone want to take bets on which F is going to COL?

Stay-at-home, shut-down type of D, IIRC. Anyone know where he was on CO’s depth chart? Was he top-4?

MONTREAL (AP) — Someone broke into the car of Pat Burns’ widow within hours of his funeral, Montreal police said Tuesday.
Police said the thieves would have known whose belongings they were stealing when they ransacked Line Burns’ car, taking about 30 autographed hockey sweaters from Burns’ personal collection.
“They went through his stuff,” said Constable Anie Lemieux of the Montreal police, noting Burns’ wallet was in the car.
“The person who left with the shirts and everything knows that this is Pat Burns’ stuff.”
Burns, who coached the New Jersey Devils to the 2003 Stanley Cup title, died Nov. 19 after a long battle with cancer at age 58.

Damn, I’m missing the chance to witness this by two days – from PD
“Sunrise Sports & Entertainment announced today that the Second Annual Florida Panthers Jewish Heritage Night presented by The Original Brooklyn Water Bagel Co. will take place on Tuesday, Dec. 7 during the Cats-Avalanche game at the BankAtlantic Center.” Yes, that means a Panthers yarmulke will be given to all ticket-buyers. Yes, that means we’re going on eBay about a millisecond after the game ends to find one. [Panthers]
