Could Bieksa be headed to Washington?
The Vancouver Province tonight adds fuel to the fire that Canuck D-man Kevin Bieksa could be heading this way....maybe for Flash?

No objection from me. We need another dman who can play in the 5/6/7 slot, and Flash is pretty much a spare part. I just don’t know if Vancouver needs Flash.
There is no problem a hammer cannot either fix or make irrelevant.
Does any team need Flash?
The guy is Peter Schumpmaker. Lord knows what a schump is, but you can bet your bippy his ancestors made them. What he's doing is far worse than crafting fine schumps.

How bad do you guys need a Dman? Bieksa has been much improved this season, but taking on more salary isn’t what the ’Nucks need right now, especially if Salo returns anytime soon.

Even healthy, the Caps are an injury away from icing two guys who are best left in the pressbox at least one game out of every two. Carlson and Alzner, while rookies, have been playing extremely well over the last few weeks. We’ll see how long that keeps up, but if they maintain their current level of play, the top-5 are actually pretty good. But they might not. Getting a legitimate NHL D to plug into Erskine or Sloan’s spot is a pretty serious upgrade.
It’s not a question of if the ‘Nucks are going to make a move, but when, right? Y’all are slammed pretty tight up against the salary cap right now and when Salo comes off of LTIR, you’re waaaay over, if I’m remembering correctly.
How badly do the Canucks need a scoring wing who has enough skill to play on the PP?

The Canucks PP is cruising along at a 25% clip right now, number one in the league. I’m going to say a need for a scoring wing is not that dire, as of now.
We Canuck fans are always expecting a move to be made. You’re right, though, when Salo comes back, somebody has to go. Schaefer’s gone and I don’t know if Rypien’s indefinite leave counts against the cap. That’s something, but not enough. Moves will be made.

Our 7/8 dmen are both AHL level. We need another dman.

Sloan and who?
Erskine is an NHL level player. Just not necessarily every night, although he’s been outpacing even what I expected him to this year.

Erskine is clear #6 to me (and a legit NHL 6D), so no argument there. #8 is Fahey.

Not for Bieksa, if you meant that. We would never trade in our conf. to a team we might meet in the playoffs.
Its why we were out of the market on the Chicago Yard Sale. They flat out said last offseason…

No, I did mean Fleischmann as a possibility for the Kings. It wouldn’t make sense for the Kings and Canucks to deal within the conference, especially since it’s so competitive this year.

I’m fine with Bieksa becoming a Cap, but still holding out for Brian Burke to perhaps peddle Francois Beauchemin. With Keith Aulie looking more legit, and the Leafs in dire need of some secondary (OK, primary) scoring, I could see Burke dialing up GMGM to see if there’s some mutual interest. But I’d pass if Brett Lebda, who seems to have fallen out of Wilson’s favor, is the only one he’d be willing to offer for Flash or Fehr, though….more would have to come back the Caps’ way.

What does Zanon bring to the table that Erskine doesn’t already:
G G A P +/- PIM Hits BkS
Erskine: 25 3 3 6 1 37 61 41
Zanon: 22 0 1 1 0 16 43 44
Erskine has more PIMs but he fights, and Zanon doesn’t. and yes, Zanon has 3 more blocked shots in 3 fewer games, but I don’t think the difference is that much bigger.
I don’t see how Zanon is that much better than what the Caps already have on the roster.

He would be compared to Sloan. $2M might be a bit high for a 6/7D though.

Definitely Zanon is better than Sloan, but the Caps aren’t going to look to replace a 7th D-man. If they bring in someone they will have to be a 5th or 6th (which on this team means they’re a 6th…) Otherwise there really isn’t a point in making a roster move.

Looks like Zanon is top-pairing in Minny
Here’s an advanced stat comparison. Looks like Zanon plays more minutes with tougher competition and better teammates, tougher zonestart. He has a high on-ice save percentage, but a putrid on-ice shooting percentage, while Erskine is the opposite (both have PDOs around 990, so both should look better in raw numbers or at least in +/-ON60 as the season progresses). Zanon has a much better relative Corsi.
My blog and Twitter, featuring coverage of the most unpredictable team in the NHL and where we defend Mike Green, Alex Ovechkin, and Alexander Semin until the bitter end. That is to say, when someone tries to call BS on the Corsi numbers.

RAL did a good job addressing it below, but Erskine and Zanon aren’t even close to being the same caliber of player.
