The trend of Russian players failing to meet with expectations is interesting, and indeed seems to raise the question of mental fallout from the whooping they got from Canada at the Olympics. It will be interesting to see whether or not it is a trend that carries on throughout the season. Hopefully not.

Best of luck to the Caps tonight. Sadly, I won’t be able to catch the game but here’s hoping they manage some payback from the last time they faced Tampa.

I got a Courage Cap last year with a Quinton Laing autograph. (It made sense to me, with his broken jaw, spleen injury and H1N1.) The community table told me he was thrilled, since people weren’t asking for his autograph. And on break down day at the end of the season, I had a chance to tell him that I was the one who’d asked for it. He was very, very nice.

On Jamie’s Blog on the slumping Russians — think that Semin is a much better player than Kovalev and I’m talking about Kovalev at his prime.

Rocking the Red for the Caps since 1975. Rocking the Red on additional fronts as well.

by CapsFan75 on Nov 26, 2010 8:53 AM EST reply actions

FWIW, Kovalev had his best season it looks like in 00-01, at age 26-27. How old is Semin? Oh, right.

My blog and Twitter, featuring coverage of the most unpredictable team in the NHL and where we defend Mike Green, Alex Ovechkin, Alexander Semin, and the Caps' goaltending until the bitter end. That is to say, when someone tries to call BS on the Corsi numbers.

by red army line on Nov 26, 2010 9:01 AM EST up reply actions

Scorecard on Kovy:

1 season with 40+ goals; 2 other seasons with 30+ goals. Typical output:: in the 20’s

Scorecard on Semin: 1 season 40 goals; 2 other seasons with 30+ goals; Semin’s had a lot shorter career so far. He appears to have better consistency on a year to year basis. Assume he’ll top 30 or 40 this year, barring injury.

Rocking the Red for the Caps since 1975. Rocking the Red on additional fronts as well.

by CapsFan75 on Nov 26, 2010 11:13 AM EST up reply actions

That’s a big assumption, to start. And then you have to factor in that Kovalev spent his prime in the Trappin’ 90s while Semin has played almost all his hockey post-lockout. His numbers should be higher than Kovalev’s.

Lockout talk makes me want to go out and choke an old lady - Elliotte Friedman

by Rob Parker on Nov 26, 2010 4:27 PM EST up reply actions

Through their respective first five seasons, Kovalev had an adjusted .3 goals per game and .4 assists per game. Semin had .49 goals per game and .48 assists per game. He absolutely kills Kovalev.

It should be noted, however, that Kovalev’s first five NHL seasons took him through his 23-year-old campaign, while Semin’s took him through 25 (due to the lockout and the year after it when he stayed home).

Or would it be a more apt comparison to compare Semin and Kovalev at comparable ages when they were both in the NHL at the same time: ages 22-26? In that case, from 1995 to the 1998-1999 time frame for Kovy and starting with the 2006 season to now for Sasha.

honestly, I’d be way more interested if HBO asked Brads why he fights. He’s giving up a fair number of inches and pounds on pretty much everyone he’s ever tangles with, he bleeds if the wind blows too hard, his win:loss ratio is 1:100, and yet he keeps doing it. And Caps fans love him for it.

I know HBO is going to be working hard to balance this so it appeals to both the obsessive Caps/Pens fan, hockey fans, and hockey newbies, but that’s the sort of behind-the-scenes stuff I’d love to see.

indulge me a minute and allow me to play armchair coach, but the Caps need to knock either Stamkos or St. Louis off their game (not out, just off). Which, I’m sure, is every game plan, but I’m continually amazed at how much space those two are given by opposing teams, particularly on the power play. I know, they’re both very very good, very fast, very smart players. But if you’re going to give them all day and all the space in the universe to do their thing, well….

If you try to play Marty close up, he uses his quickness or playmaking ability to go around you, if you give him room, he can create, but the idea is to get him to set up one of his teammates who don’t have Marty’s skills.

The thing is now that Stamkos is there, the two of them combine to make their contributions go way up… they click amazingly well together like Adam Oates did with Brett Hull.

I think the only way to get Marty off his game is to duct tape him into his locker….

There’s been talk by some Pens fans about how Crosby doesn’t have the supporting cast Stamkos has. It’s not a completely invalid point, either – Stamkos has a pretty decent set of forwards to play with. And we know that Ovi’s always been able to score regardless of his linemates but he’s obviously been made better by being with Backstrom.

Crosby’s having to generate a ton of offense on his own because Malkin continues to be inconsistent and getting a winger in there to play with Sid just hasn’t been a priority for them…either that or he’s not capable of making those around him better so he just does it himself, whichever theory you decide to subscribe to :P

If anyone needs me, I'll be at Kettler.

by Becca H on Nov 26, 2010 12:49 PM EST up reply actions

getting a high-quality winder hasn’t been a priority. They’ve been more than happy to experiment with every cheap winger they can get their hands on (with apologies to Bill Guerin, who is better than “cheap” even if his production was the same when he was with the Islanders)

by RedBirdie on Nov 26, 2010 1:03 PM EST up reply actions

Obviously, Sid realized the problem and is doing something about it. But he was never the question, for what you’ve pointed out. The only time he’s really had quality on his wing is whenever Malkin was moved up there. I’m just wearing that chip on my shoulder that comes with being a Caps fan. You know, the one that goes with, “so and so is good, but….”

"It's always good to have vikings."

by gfcaps fan on Nov 26, 2010 1:19 PM EST up reply actions

The Sid v. AO debate has gotten hilarious because the sides are now forced to flip their entire arguments. Early in their careers AO had much less talent around him and was scoring more goals so we said “AO does more with less and he scores goals which are more important!” Now AO is getting more assists than Sid, but Sid has been scoring more goals, and the Pens fans are resorting to the “no supporting cast!” argument and arguing that goals are more important.

I get that Sid has crap wings at ES, but there’s no reason for the PP to stink so bad with the talent they can ice, so I’m just not buying the argument completely.

Don’t look now, but the Islanders just broke their losing streak. DiPietro with the shutout. I’d make a lame joke about it being against the Devils, but not so funny at the moment.

good on them, but man, that would have been something to see. And it would nice is the answer to the ever popular trivia question “Who holds the worst losing streak in NHL history?” was not longer the Capitals.

just for fun, because this seems to be the “quarter mark” of the season. If things ended today….

EAST
Flyers vs. Atlanta
Capitals vs. Rangers
Candieans vs. Bruins
Penguins vs. Lightning

WEST
Red Wings vs. Sharks
Coyotes vs. Avalanche
Canucks vs. Kings
Blue Jackets vs. Blues

some interesting match-ups! Montreal-Boston would probably be worth selling my soul to see.

Those would be some fun match-ups. I don’t think CBJ is going to hold on though.

Crazy west. SIx points 1-13.

My blog and Twitter, featuring coverage of the most unpredictable team in the NHL and where we defend Mike Green, Alex Ovechkin, Alexander Semin, and the Caps' goaltending until the bitter end. That is to say, when someone tries to call BS on the Corsi numbers.

Yeah, that’s going to happen early in the year. Almost everyone is going to be a theoretical contender until after New Year’s.

Someone on the St Louis Blues’ blog posted about how much closer the race in the West is than it was in either the last two years and that the Wings were awfully close to 9th place.

If you think this is just the result of the season being in its early stages, think again. On this date last year, the first-place San Jose Sharks and 13th-place St. Louis Blues were separated by 16 points. Two years earlier, the first-place Sharks held a 17-point lead on the Blues, who were coincidentally in the same place in the standings.
