I dig the Great 8 on the right side. And I think the move got him to shake out his game a bit, get more creative. Nicely done, Boudreau.
I’d like to see Brooks Laich as 1LW instead of Flash.
Atta dinnin stick a who!
Brooks was already 1LW. And the question is - will he stay there, even when Knuble gets back?

Flash started there. I liked Laich there better

Laich definitely looked good there. We’ll see how long BB sticks with those lines but that was by far the best game we’ve seen from the top line in quite some time. Hard to attribute too much of that to Laich but may as well stick with it for a bit.

Generally speaking, there’s a bump in productivity whenever a structural change like that is made. The real pudding will be if the effect persists after a few games and everyone’s settled in to the new roles.

We’ll see. And then we’ll have another shakeup when Knuble comes back. If our ‘present’ first line continues to work, Knuble goes to 2RW and I assume Semin reverts to 2LW. Ovi being a right winger would pretty much defeat the purpose of Semin being a RW.

I’m not sure I agree. There are lots of players that don’t like being moved and don’t respond well. We’ve even seen a few guys on our team that the coaching staff exclusively plays on one wing because they don’t like their performance on the opposite side. The Flyers have moved Cs all over the lineup trying to find a way to make them fit and some of those guys clearly have not played as well on the wing as at center. If it was so easy to get a jump start then you’d see it much more often.

Good morning and happy Thanksgiving. I give thanks that our dymanic duo have regained their chemistry. I’m loving Ovi on the right too. I thought Laich looked right at home with them. If I didn’t have a turkey to cook I’d go watch their practice. I love happy energetic practices.

Will there be a morning skate at KCI tomorrow with the early game?

I doubt it. There’s never a morning skate for Sunday 5:00 games so I don’t think it would happen for a Friday edition either.

Here’s to hoping the Islanders break our shared record with the Sharks for the longest consecutive losing streak. They’re currently on a 14 game skid so it’s certainly possible even though they play the Devils and then the Rangers twice.

I’m glad Neuvy is playing well, but I don’t understand the point of trying to project him breaking time on ice, games played and win records as a 22 year old in the year after his NHL debut. Kolzig set those records when he was 30 and in his seventh or eighth season as a Cap. If Neuvy continues to play well, there will be plenty of time for him to take on individual records — right now, I’m more concerned that he not be injured or burned out at the end of his rookie season.

Doug Wickenheisee is much beloved here in the STL. I live perhaps 10 minutes from where Wick did. He is remembered through the 14 Fund, and a banner hangs in Scottrade Center in the rafters for the fund.

Great stuff linking to the Red Fisher article on Doug Wickenheiser.
I remember watching in Canada Game 6 of the CGY-STL series in 1986 when Wickenheiser scored the OT winner of what was likely the biggest win in Blues history. It was dubbed the “Monday Night Miracle” as the Blues came back from a 3 goal deficit with 12 minutes left and went on to win in OT to force Game 7 of the Campbell Conference Finals.
Blues announcer Ken Wilson made the famous call,
Here’s Ramage, for Federko too far, Federko steals the puck from Reinheart, over to Hunter who shoots, blocked, Wickenheiser scores! Doug Wickenheiser! The Blues pull it off and it’s unbelievable!
Here’s a video link to that famous game: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7yodTX7a-Fc

Juneau had problems recovering from a broken jaw in Boston, so (if memory serves) he kept wearing it after getting traded down here until it fully healed. Seeing the Knuble pic was the first thing I thought of when I saw that, hence #NeedsMoreJuneau.

So I was looking at the average PK minutes for some of the offensive defensemen that may contend for the Norris this season and was a bit surprised by some of the numbers. I also included the numbers from last season. The number in parenthesis shows where their SH Time on Ice ranks among the D on each of their own teams. My question is, can guys like Byfuglien and Liles be considered players "who demonstrate throughout the season the greatest all-round ability in the position" if they don’t kill penalties or spend very little time doing so. Also, I was a bit surprised to see guys like Green and Boyle get more PK time than guys like Doughty and Weber. Is it just because the Caps and Sharks don’t have anyone else that can do a better job right now and the Kings and Predators do?
this year———— last year
Dustin Byfuglien –—— 0.10 (7th) –——— 0.04 (7th)
Lubomir Visnovsky –— 0.41 (6th) –——— 0.33 (9th)
John-Michael Liles –— 1:20 (9th) –——— 0.18 (7th)
Kris Letang –————- 2:13 (4th) –——— 1:22 (8th)
Drew Doughty –———- 2:26 (4th) –———- 2:01 (4th)
Shea Weber –———— 2:35 (3rd) –———- 1:15 (5th)
Mike Green -————– 3:00 (2nd) –———- 2:09 (5th)
Duncan Keith –———- 3:06 (2nd) -———– 2:58 (1st)
Zdeno Chara –———— 3:09 (1st) -———– 2:47 (1st)
Dan Boyle –————— 3:11 (1st) –———— 2:34 (4th)
Nicklas Lidstrom –—— 3:14 – (2nd) –——- 2:56 (2nd)
Chris Pronger –———- 3.25 (2nd) -———– 3:43 (1st)
Lobbies: Green, Carlson, Orlov
The Sharks are better off on D than the Caps (at least, were last season), but their situation is still not desirable, it seems to me. The Kings and especially Predators are deep on defense, so I guess that’s why Doughty and Weber are a bit lower. The Predators are also a very disciplined team (I think they only took 2 minors a game last season on average, best in the NHL).
by red army line on Nov 25, 2010 12:25 PM EST up reply actions
The Sharks aren’t much better. Blake retired and Vlasic has sort of stagnated. Murray got hurt and they’ve been calling up young guys from the AHL. You could argue that their young guys are better than Fahey and Sloan (and they probably are) but they are thinner in the top 4 than the Caps are.

Depends on what the Caps think of him as a prospect, and I suspect they think he’s got a future, so back to South Carolina he goes where he will get playing time.

If you haven’t read this, don’t. I want my 3 minutes back. You know it’s a shit-stirring article with no real substance when, 80% of the way through, there’s a paragraph that basically says “I got nothing”…
Granted, Ovechkin is far from reaching Jagr’s level of unruly behaviour. In fact, he’s nowhere near it. We can’t recall an incident where he has publicly criticized his coach’s decision and we don’t think he has ever openly expressed any negative feelings toward Boudreau or anyone else in the Capitals organization. In fact, when discussing the future of potential free agent – and friend – Alex Semin, Ovechkin noted that "it’s not part of my job to say I want this guy to be on the team."
…which is immediately followed by a repetition of the bullshit thesis anyway.
Don’t give this guy any traffic.

That article was crazy — in my opinion! Talking about how the Pens had hired Czech coach Ivan Hlinka to please Jagr (or that was their intent), only to have Jagr undermine his system.

I unfortunately read that yesterday. It reminded me of why I hate gossip—make a couple of inferences, string a few innuendos together, choose a quote or two out of context, and top it of with a disclaimer and voila we have a muck-raking piece inspired by a unwise moment in a hallway. I thought about gathering the volumes of quotes where Ovi says directly how much he believes in BB, but then thought why give that blogger fodder and hits.

Saw this pic of BB and Ovi conversing while the Canes were practicing over at the Canes’ site.
I found it a nice visual of Ovi listening thoughtfully to his coach, discussing perhaps a change in strategy, such as (hypothetically speaking in hindsight) playing right wing.

It’s a better year for Jason B. this year. Last year, he probably barely (I nearly typed bearly) played during the second half of the year since Holtby was Mr. Iron Man in goal. And then there were the rehab starts of Varly, not to mention the times that Neuvy was sent down.
