Has Alan May ever coached at the nhl/ahl level? He seems like he would be a good addition as an assistant coach – great insight, good analysis, enthusiasm and telling it like it is. I guess he would be coaching if he wanted to coach…..

I don’t think he has coached before. Once his days with the Caps were done (early 90s), he spent some time on Calgary and Dallas, then retired. I think he settled in the Dallas area and ran some hockey camps for awhile.
He was one of my favorite Caps 20+ years ago when I became I fan. I’m glad he’s back with the organization.
Thanks for the follow-up, Cluster. When they have Russ and Alan on for pre/post Caps…don’t care much for Russ, but love Alan.

May’s HockeyDB entry lists a few coaching gigs, most recently in ’08-09 as an assistant for the Norfolk Admirals.
I thought to win the Masterton you actually had to start playing again.

Actually you don’t. Gord Kluzak won the Masteron in 1990 having played only 8 games following a season where he played only 3 games. He played 2 games in 1990-91and then had to retire at 27 due to his knees being about 95 years old.
Personally Poti wouldn’t be a bad choice for the Caps for this season as the Masterton nominee, but I would put Edmonton’s Kurtis Foster at the front of the line for the award this season.

Foster’s story is so sad. He was Tampa’s nominee last year for the Masterton for his recovery from a horrific leg injury. And he was a finalist so he was invited to the NHL Award show. And then shortly before the Awards, his own infant daughter passed away.
You perhaps knew me better as "Your Nation's Capital." Same great commentary, now with 100% more transparency!

Can anyone tell what kind of whale it’s supposed to be? Looks a bit like a Grey Whale (apart from the obvious color issues).
I think it would have been better as a Right Whale or a Sperm Whale — they look mean:

It’s interesting you mention this – it actually looks like a pacific humpback to me, given the striations on the throat and the shape of its head (which suggests that it’s a baleen, rather than a toothed whale).
Of course, it’d be silly if a team based in Hartford had a pacific humpback as their mascot.

not to mention the USS Seawolf and the Seawolf class of submarines all being made at EB in Groton, CT
LET'S GO CAPS!!!
The Seawolf was canceled ages ago after a total production run of 3 boats (one of which is the USS Jimmy Carter – a special mission boat). It has since been replaced by the Virginia-class.
And I hear you talk the talk, but I don't see you walk the walk and I still don't believe a thing you say.
yeah, but all 3 were made there, plus the Virginias are being made there, OT, but I got to walk around one of the VAs being made while across the hangar/workshop the Jimmy Carter was having it’s addition added (under a giant tarp so we couldn’t see the new section)
LET'S GO CAPS!!!
Sweet! I’ve not been up to Groton. . . yet.

More important numbers (that I also tweeted):
Tomas Fleischmann has 9 goals, 8 assists in 39 regular season games since the Olympics. That’s a 18.9-goal, 16.8-assist 82-game pace. Of course, that blows the 6.3-goal, 6.3-assist 82-game pace he’s on over his last 19 games out of the water.

Guess I’m voting with my heart instead of my brain by that definition since I’m not voting for either Doughty or Crosby.
For forwards, I’m voting for 1 center (Stamkos) and 2 wingers (Ovi and Semin). And at D, I’m voting for Green and Lidstrom. (I did vote for Doughty in some of my earlier ballots instead of Lidstrom.)

“I know what he’s going to do, basically,” Corvo said. "Most cases, he’s going to try and put a move on you. And if he’s not going to do that, he’s going to try and shoot between your legs and use you as a screen – one of those two options. [Link]

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Judging by the end of last season and the beginning of this one, I would say most defenders have Ovie figured out. He really needs to mix it up in order to be effective again.
I can only imagine how many points he’d have if he was “effective”…
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Anyone have any ideas as to why teams were able to figure this out in the last few months, where as Ovie has been doing this since he came into the league?
I think defenders had already figured out the between the legs curl and drag move. Guys like Pronger and Weber aren’t going to fall for that but some younger, less experienced guys might.
Alan May pointed out how guys are using their stick position to block deflect the between the legs shot. Not sure if that is a new thing or just something that has been more effective lately.

Regarding Kovalchucklegate...
I’m not sure how this story has even grown the legs that it has. Would it even be a story if the Caps had won the game 5-0? Nope, I doubt it (maybe a story in NJ…who knows?).
From what I can tell, the only real lapse in judgment used here by these guys was the fact that they were having their “conversation” so close to where BB’s post-gamer was occurring. If you’re upset because Ovie was fraternizing with the “enemy” or because he was that jovial after an embarrassing loss, then in my opinion you’re either naive or just being harsh or being unrealistic.
The Caps (and Ovechkin) are under the microscope as a team right now, not just in Washington, but in the entire NHL universe due to their talent, expectations, and recent playoff performance…which is why this even becomes a story at all. If two guys from the Islanders and Oilers are talking after a game, would anyone even notice?
The way I see it, it’s a long 82 game season, and it’s not easy for even the best teams to bring their “A” game every night…even if we as fans now take every game very seriously, it’s unrealistic to believe that any team, no matter how good, isn’t gonna throw a stinker out there every now and then. I’m sure Alex wasn’t pleased with the game, and I’m sure he was just as pissed as we fans were at the outcome, but does that mean he’s not gonna take the time to visit with a long-time friend of his who just happens to play on the other team after the contest is over? It’s not like this was a playoff game in May, it was a regular season game in November lost by a team that is still leading it’s division. I’m very sure that on the ice, whatever friendship these guys have goes out the window when they’re actually playing against each other, and that their friendship probably fuels an even greater than average competitive spirit, so I got no problem with that.
Again, probably not very smart to do it right in the view of reporters and such, but otherwise I think this is big to-do about a non-story. It’s not like they were doing this during team warmups or during the game in front of the general public. You may agree, you may not, but I’m moving on — I’ll be much more concerned if they don’t show up and play a better game tonight.

The way the story was written it seemed like his teammates were all walking by him on the way to the bus while he joked around with an opponent. I don’t even have a problem with him having a good time with Kovy per se, just move it somewhere else.
It’s not a big deal but I could see how some of his teammates and his coach might have been rubbed the wrong way at the time.
I think the only thing wrong was its location. It was loud enough that it distracted Bruce and the reporters who were asking him questions. And it was caught on tape. Otherwise, no one ever knows. Of course it happens all the time. They don’t live in a vacuum, and friendships don’t disappear when you play on different teams.
"It's always good to have vikings."
I think I’d go one further – it’s only a story because of Bruce’s response to Corey’s question. If he brushed it off with, “Happens all the time, no one takes losing harder than AO, etc.” it never would’ve been reported. But Bruce clearly had some thoughts about it – albeit no doubt a byproduct of the emotions stemming from the loss – and went with “I’ll keep my thoughts to myself” (or whatever he said). That made it a “story,” and the response itself validated the legitimacy of the question.
And I think the varied reactions to it show that it’s not an uninteresting story, even though I couldn’t agree more that the overall impact of the event on anything from AO’s play to his relationship with his coach to the coach’s control of the team is minimal at most.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Agree to agree then, I suppose. I just don’t think a “the sky is falling!” reaction is at all necessary here.
Now…it was Ovechkin and Crosby talking after a game 7 playoff loss…now that’s a different story.

I was listing to NHL Power Power play radio show yesterday, Phil Esposito was making his usual Thursday afternoon appearance, and I was a bit shocked at their reaction to the whole thing, especially in the case of Espo, who is usually one to go against the thinking of the media and side with the players. Granted, he wasn’t bad-mouthing Ovie and Kovalchuck for it, but he did stress that it was always part of the code back in his day that when meeting up with opposing players (i.e. his bother when he’d play in Chicago), to always do it away from the public eye and to not fraternize during games.

I think Bob McK’s response was fair and accurate: let’s not blow this out of the water but it is poor optics. As for TSN not paying attention to the Caps, they have covered one Caps game so far this year (vs the Leafs). Not sure what attention you were seeking, but they have gotten as much as the Pens or Flyers have thus far.

I just mean that the Caps haven’t gotten much attention from them until this story—of course they report on the games using their version of the AP newswire and of course the Canadian teams are their focus.
It’s just when I saw the link I thought to myself that of course someone at TSN would jump on this because it is about Ovi and a mistake and he’s the anti-Canadian. It’s really not a big deal to me—I’m just in a good mood and would like to stay that way.

it’s only a story because of Bruce’s response to Corey’s question.
This is the second time Bruce has caused headaches for the franchise and his captain. The first was when he used the word “reckless” that opened the floodgates for the Canadian vultures. Sometimes, Bruce is like a gumball machine. Words drop right from his throat to his mouth and bypass his brain. I don’t envy Nate Ewell’s job in having to clean up after Bruce’s PR disasters.
It so reminds me of my days on The Hill when the boss would say something you knew you’d spend the next day or two back-peddling away from.
Anyway, what strikes me is that Bruce says what he says post-game, then says what he says a day later and people readily accept the “day later” version as what he honestly meant to say. It’s odd, b/c Bruce is an emotional and honest dude and you’d think that would make his immediate response the more “real” than the one he gives after thinking about (or being told) what he should have said.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Definitely, if it wasn’t a big deal then he would have said it on the scene. I’m sure he had words with AO in private and is trying to mitigate damage with his day-after pill comments.
Lockout talk makes me want to go out and choke an old lady - Elliotte Friedman
That’s why I thought it would be appropriate for Ovechkin to have said something the next day about not realizing how close they were to the crowd and being a loud distraction. It won’t happen again, yadda yadda. Then again, it’s Ovi, and it probably wouldn’t matter what he says.
"It's always good to have vikings."
It’s not just his captain. He “inconvenienced” his organization as well. That’s why Ted has to go on his blog to try and explain why it’s not an issue as does Vogs, as does Nate. If Bruce had just bit his tongue, none of this would have become an issue. And in any case, if Bruce has a problem with Ovechkin he should handle it internally, not during a press conference.
I think it’s a little far-fetched now to imply that Bruce has to apologize for his glance over at Ovi and that it was, in fact, BB that caused all of this. Look, even Ted tacitly acknowledges Ovi shouldn’t have been where he was. BB just coached a second 5-0 loss in three games; he’s annoyed and pissed. I likely doubt that even Mary Poppins would have kept herself so composed when facing the socratic death squad that is capitals’ bet reporters and hearing the Russian bro-crew having a few laughs.
Everything sounds smarter in Tikkanesse....
I agree with you that the lapse in judgement was not in the fraternizing itself but rather doing it so close to the reporters during BB’s postgame interview thus leading to Corey’s question and BB’s irritated response. If Corey hadn’t written story then the rest of the media wouldn’t have followed it up with their own. But that’s what reporters do.
However the great thing about a news cycle is that it cycles. So by tomorrow we should be hearing about another faux pas, preferably on another team.

It’s the natural flow of the NHL news cycle – about every two weeks Ovie makes the news for someting or other. Last season it was nearly clockwork, every 10-14 days. He’s been at the top of the cycle nearly continuously the last two weeks with the DVD release and all.
I’d much rather him be in the news for being awesome on the ice, and teh Wonder Sid videos aren’t helping much.

Would it even be a story if the Caps had won the game 5-0? Nope, I doubt it
It absolutely wouldn’t, mostly because I doubt Bruce’s reaction would have been as harsh and emotional in the moment. And I think Corey tweeted something about Kovalchuk sticking his head around a curtain separating the rooms at the morning skate and asking Bruce to tell the Alexes he was there – that seemed gosh darn precious at the time.
And I’d agree, I was just pissed at him for doing that during the coach’s press conference, 10 feet from the media. I have no issue with him laughing and joking with a friend, I don’t doubt he takes losses – especially losses like that – hard. But as you point out, the team is under a microscope right now. With a ‘C’ on his chest, the focus on Ovechkin becomes that much stronger. He just needs to be smarter about it, you know? I’m betting (hoping) that after BB calmed down he told him as much.
If anyone needs me, I'll be at Kettler.
I think most people who took issue with the incident were irritated by the location and timing- in view and earshot of the postgame presser. I know I have no problem with him meeting up with friends on other teams or with him having a laugh with them, even after a loss. The problem all had to do with discretion. I don’t think even Corey thought the fraternizing itself was the issue as he pointed out in his article that it happens all the time and that Fleischmann had also had a postgame meeting with a fellow countryman (Elias) but did so more discreetly.
Also remember, this is not the first time Ovi has interrupted one of Bruce’s pressers with a postgame activity either – there was the basketball incident a while back that elicited laughs and questions about Ovi’s abilities on the court (the mood was certainly much more jovial): there were some questions brought up about discretion (time and place) then too even though it was after a win. IMO, Ovi just needs to be more aware of his surroundings and use better judgement about where (and when- eg, not during the press conference) certain activities should take place.

On a side note: As much mileage/coverage that Corey got out of that story from the various media outlets, it seemed funny that it wasn’t even mentioned on the local CSN broadcast last night. I wonder since he’s a free-lancer if he’s got the rights to it?
"I would feed them lefts until I was pretty much tired of doing it." - Alan May, JRR, 10.16.2010
Uh, no. My guess – purely a guess – is that CSN didn’t want anything to do with the controversy that had ensued, especially after Bruce essentially put out the fire at the skate earlier in the day.

and SC is saying DeMichiel was recalled; note: DeMichiel was tweeting that he was at the airport earlier today and about equipment bag so either AHL transaction page listed the wrong goalie or both are headed to Hershey.
Hershey hosts Worcester tonight, game at 7
It would be cool if Worcester’s team nickname was the Sauce.
I poured spot remover on my dog. Now he's gone.

Or (haven’t checked the schedule) SC has tonight off and he was headed back to Rochester for T-Day with his GF.
You perhaps knew me better as "Your Nation's Capital." Same great commentary, now with 100% more transparency!
“He” meaning DeMike. But then he was talking about his gear bag too… so who knows.

SC next plays Friday night in South Carolina. Before I saw the recall news, I saw this tweet -
“Just landed in Hotlanta…gonna have to haul if I wanna make my connecting flight at 10:50, hopin my equipment bag moves fast too!”
My reaction –
- odd to be traveling with equipment for such a short Thanksgiving trip since they have a game in SC Friday night; so yeah, I think he’s headed to Hershey
I was checking the transaction logs last night… saw Kashirsky headed down, but no goalies or D-men going up.

Kovalchukgate! It just doesn’t have that good of a ring to it.
Shouldn’t we just call it Kovalgate or Kovygate for short?
Rocking the Red for the Caps since 1975. Rocking the Red on additional fronts as well.
