I’m not concerned at all about last night’s loss: this was a trap game if I’ve ever seen one, with loads of press clippings on one side and on the other, a pissed off team down on its luck and getting it’s heart and soul back between the pipes. But I am very disturbed that Ovechkin can’t seem to find another gear until he’s absolutely forced to. I’m not one to agree with Milbury at any juncture, but there was a grain of truth in the hyperbole of his rant at intermission of the Caps away game vs. Boston. Ovechkin is coasting through stretches of every game now, and is doing next to nothing in the defensive zone. Indifferent and lackadaisical may be generous. Sure he’s putting up points, but I’d venture to say this is some of the least inspired hockey I’ve seen from #8 in his young career.
Time to flip the switch, Captain.

This year we have seen more ad branding of “Ovi”, between the print ads, commercials, sponsor work and DVD, one wonders if the work of IMG is impacting Ovi’s focus and work on the ice. Folks point to his goals/assists being near the top of the leaderboard as proof that Ovi is doing well but I agree with you that, from pure observation, there is something different about his overall play.

I’m not ready to blame his handlers at IMG for a lack of want-to in his game. I’m more inclined to think that there’s a health issue—the wrist injury sustained in the preseason Carl P points out below is what I keep coming back to. I hope it’s “just” this.

I’m scheduling my DVR for this week, and it looks like the 11/17 game against the Sabres won’t be on Center Ice, NHLN, or Vs. Anyone know what the deal is?
This is not a problem for DC area folks (it’s on CSN+), but it is kind of a bummer for out of towners if they don’t put it up on Center Ice somewhere.

You probably already know that the game will be on MSG and CSN. I see what you are seeing on Directv.com.
Doesn’t make any sense to me. My guess is that it pops up later in the week?
I don’t recall any game recently where I haven’t been able to get a feed on CI.

Maybe it’s going to be Yahoo’s game of the night? I don’t see why it wouldn’t still be on Center Ice in that case, but what do I know?

Washington dodged some bullets late in the third with Backstrom off for a double-minor that bled into the overtime session.
With ShaMo’s help. Vogs cracks me up. After that game (and getting up at 5 am for a Pee Wee game), I needed a chuckle this morning.
Ovi is not right. He has a hangover from last season’s disappointments and suspensions, or something. I do wonder, too, about the weight of the distractions of his super stardom and that of being captain, possibly. He seems joyless.
I wonder if his wrist is still hurting him as well. He seems to be picking his spots a fair amount.

possible. it did seem to be a somewhat serious injury, and he didn’t take any time off to let it heal.

He’s 3rd in the league in assists and points and still in the Top 10 in goals. If that’s joyless, God help the league if/when he starts to “have fun.”

You can refer to his point totals all you want, but he’s still not playing anywhere nearly as well as he’s capable of.

Right, and his B game is still among the best in the league. I’m not worried about him.

I don’t think a lot of people are worried. Normally there are reasons for guy’s play when it falls off a bit. It’s November.

I’m not worried; I’d just prefer to see his A game.
by wickedwitch on Nov 14, 2010 11:03 AM EST up reply actions
I don’t care what his points are. He still doesn’t look like the Ovi of old and I’ve seen others here note that, as well. As has been said before about other players, points and the scoresheet don’t tell the whole story.
By your own eyes, do you think he is playing the way he did, when he looked dynamic and full of energy, and, yes, joy?
It’s too early in the season to worry about Ovechkin, especially if he’s still producing.

Players get older and change their game. If it’s dormant while just beneath the surface, so be it.
Wins are still coming, goals are still being scored. I don’t care if he’s not smiling and winning every game by 5 goals, especially if the dynamic in the room has changed in the six months since the playoffs.

Why should we ask for God to “help the league”?
I do think he’s a bit out of it as well (doesn’t look to have that normal powerful skating stride, even) but I doubt it’s “weight of the distractions of his super stardom and that of being captain.” Maybe more like realizing the regular season still means a lot.

Hangover, hell. I see what you’re seeing, but I interpret it exactly the opposite way. I do think something’s wrong (wrist or whatever), but I think it’s a testament to how committed he is this season that he’s producing as well as he is despite whatever the problem is.
He looks “off” to my eyes, but his team is winning and his numbers are very, very good. Imagine how much better he’ll be when he quits playing like crap…

Hi from chilly Toledo (oh how I wish I was still in Florida!). Went to the Wings game last night, where it was Dino Ciccarelli night. Made sure to yell “DC loves you, Dino!” which got me some strange looks from the crowd. A night at Joe Louis gives me a new appreciation for the multiple concourses at the Phone Booth, having a metro stop beneath the arena, and the ability to walk to six thousand bars. Sadly, didn’t get close to the Avs bench to see much of Sacco and Kono.

I’ll trade almost all those things for a game at the Joe. Very little in-game entertainment crap, smart hockey crowd, and not a bad seat in the house.

unfortunately, I was surrounded by some youth hockey team. The parents all sat together drinking and let their 11 year olds act like obnoxious idiots (I know, doesn’t take too much for 11 year olds to act like obnoxious idiots, but if I hear “PEEEEEEEEENIS!” one more time, I’m gonna slug somebody!). Kinda put a damper on the night.

I’m assuming that “PEEEEEEEEENIS!” was followed by a lot of giggling?
I can tell you that my team would have been warned and probably doing Herbies the following morning for behavior like that. Were they wearing team jerseys? If so, then that’s an embarrassment to their club.
And, furthermore, you’d think they could be more inventive than “PEEEEEEEEENIS!” No farting sounds? No loud burps?
Hejduk wasn’t Hey Dick? Sacco wasn’t “Sack”? C’mon.

clearly, they’re not teaching these kids the proper way to heckle in backwoods Ontario! :) They were the Junior Stars, the “pride” of Uxbridge!
slightly more amusing, I stopped by the silent auction stand because they had a signed and framed Ovie jersey. Bidding started at $850. Problem was, it wasn’t a game jersey! The shoulder weagles weren’t embroidered! I walked away laughing.

Or every time they yell it, shout back another word for it. Dong! Stiffy! Dick! Tadger! You’ll never run out.

Encouraging: the number of goals coming from the defense so far this season. I haven’t looked at the numbers yet to this point in past seasons but it just feels like there are more goals being scored from the blue line.
Tell your girlfriend to stop texting me.
I think it may just be an anomaly. I’d love it if it kept up, but in the last ten days we’ve had goals from Sloan, Erskine, and Alzner. I don’t see that happening consistently.

I just saw a tweet from Versus encouraging me to watch the video of Vanek’s “beauty” in OT.
I was out during the last half of the game last night. I’m sure it was a very nice goal, but I have zero interest in watching it. What’s done is done. Besides, the video probably has Rick Jeanrette (sp?) and another awful call.

There are goals against the Caps that I find it hard to watch again after the fact, but this isn’t one of them. Maybe because they put in such a great effort killing the long penalty to end the 3rd, so I was thrilled with the point. Maybe because there are such tangible benefits to guys like Carlson and Holtby to getting scored on like that. (Has to happen sometime, might as well get it out of the way now). But I could watch that goal over and over again with no problem.
Oh, and I hope you’re not catching today’s game on TV. Because they’re going to show it again — guaranteed.

Definitely pretty. I just wish he could have gotten his head out of his ass when my team could have used a goal from him. If this is a breakout for him I’ll live with it, but I bet he goes cold for two weeks now.
I hate Buffalo, and I love that they got fan-pressured into locking Vanek in to that albatross of a contract. Idiots.

Another terrific recap from Peerless. Here’s my favorite snippet:
Bruce Boudreau had more line combos tonight that McDonalds has in their drive thru. We could have sworn we saw Peter Bondra on one and Bobby Carpenter on another.

My guess would be because his coming off a recent injury and there is a quick turnaround for a game today. The Caps probably told him to stay home, rest up, and he’ll be in there today vs. Atlanta…

After seeing that ice last night I was happy Poti and Varly weren’t anywhere to be seen.

But if Poti isn’t healthy enough to skate on bad ice, or skate back to backs, then why is he playing again? I guess they want to ease him into the lineup but I’d rather he actually be healthy. I’d wait for him to be 100%, and then hold him out two more games just for measure. Poti’s groin is making me real nervous about that extension. Of course, we won’t know until next year (when the new deal actually kicks in) but I don’t see it getting a whole lot better. I wish Poti didn’t make my concern look so valid so quickly.

Considering today is 3rd game in 4 nights, and with the 22 hour turnaround for the back to back’s, I can live with them wanting to play the bookend tilts at home especially knowing how Buffalo was struggling.
Granted though…it is very worrisome he’s having problems with the same old injury this early in the year.

Been sort of watching the Oilers/Rangers game to kill time. Game is about over, but apparently during the latest TV timeout, all hell broke loose. The announcers have to kill time while they sort out the penalties, and they keep showing some of the fighting. So, if we didn’t all know, Avery is a punk. Challenged to a fight, declines, and then decks the guy when he’s not looking.
