Did Tyler Sloan skate?
Many a night from yonder ivied casement, ere I went to rest,
Did I look on great Orion sloping slowly to the West.

I’d be embarrassed about the 2nd period.
Holtby played pretty well. And rather than gripe about how he, Carlson, and Alzner all got burned by Vanek for the GWG, I’ll just say ’Damn, Vanek, that was pretty."
Perhaps, but the Caps were burning themselves with that all night; they definitely need to be more cognizant of their stick follow-throughs going forward.

At least we got burned by a bonafied talented player we don’t hate
and yea.. that was a sweet goal
Holtby…lesson learned :P
Ouch… it hurts to still be #1

Buffalo wings are god’s gift to man
Philly Cheesesteaks, on the other hand, are mega overrated. All the “best” places that I’m told to go are fuckin’ steakums with velveeta. I can do the same damn thing with a microwave and 2 dollars
Thats right Philly.YOur cheesesteaks are a joke
I respectfully disagree, sir. I don’t know where you get yours, but the classic Philly cheesesteak uses cheez whiz, not velveeta. I prefer provolone which is also acceptable. I would doubt that you’ve ever been to Pat’s King of Steaks or Geno’s in South Philly or else you wouldn’t make such an absurd statement. On the other hand I could take or leave Buffalo wings but an authentic beef on weck sandwich that you can only get in Buffalo is to die for.
"Don’t put your beer in the microwave, eh. It’ll boil."-Bob McKenzie
OK, to each his own. Mabye you should ask for provolone next time instead of the wiz.. Just don’t ask for Swiss like John Kerry did during his campaign. He must have lost a lot of votes in Philly with that gaffe. Actually I prefer Geno’s.
"Don’t put your beer in the microwave, eh. It’ll boil."-Bob McKenzie
I actually think the point the Caps lost on that play was worth far less than the lessons John Carlson and Holtby learned about the quickness of NHL stars. In particular, Holtby’s judgment on pokechecks (when to do it, how fast you need to move once you commit) is going to be better for seeing Vanek abuse him tonight.
This is what watching young players is about. Mike Green is a lot less likely to give that one up to Vanek today than he was two years ago. I actually really like this aspect of watching sports.

Holtby was also saved by the right post late in the third when he was too busy crosschecking a Sabres defender out of his crease on the left. That could easily have been a goal.
You perhaps knew me better as "Your Nation's Capital." Same great commentary, now with 100% more transparency!
I don’t know — that guy he was crosschecking is the guy who deflected the puck against the post. If Holtby doesn’t put a stick in his back, maybe that turns out to be a goal.

Four Caps had a hand in that goal, and none of them good. First, what was Marcus Johansson doing, trying to draft Vanek in the fourth turn at Daytona? He chased him out of the offensive zone, then as Vanek circled back, Johansson eased off. Then, John Carlson tried to sweep the puck off Vanek’s stick as Vanek was skating down the middle. Carlson missed, then wasn’t in position to defend Vanek as he broke left. Karl Alzner was late getting back and could only put a half-hearted hook on Vanek as he was about to shoot. Finally, Holtby tried to poke check the puck away and missed, leaving him face down on the ice and helpless to watch as Vanek tucked the puck behind him. The only guy not to make an appearance on the play was Ovechkin, but he was largely invisible the rest of the night, too.
I can’t fault Holtby for being daring there. He wasn’t the cowering rookie hiding in his own net. I can’t really fault Carlson, either, as the only man back for trying to sweep the puck to the side. But it was just a coincidence of events, all of which broke against the Caps to allow Vanek to get the goal.
Even the scorers flubbed the play. They had Jeff Schultz on the ice for the goal…he wasn’t.

Poor Schultzie! Gets blamed for everything that goes wrong for the Caps.
For the game winner, seems that we had all our kids on the ice (Johansson, Alzner, Carlson, and Holtby in goal).
Rocking the Red since 1975
Watching the replay, Schultz was the victim of a bad change. As Vanek was skating out of the zone, Schultz went to the bench, Alzner hopping on. But by that time Vanek had a head of steam to the Caps net. Alzner couldn’t get into the play quickly enough to help out Carlson.
If you've read this far...seek help.
Alzner already took a hook cleaning Carlson’s mess against NYR. Why is he to blame, he wasn’t owned. The guy you let off is most culpable. Carlson has to do something there.

Peerless – great breakdown of the last goal, and likely something that will be used in film sessions if I had to guess. Defintiely a good amount of “aw man” to be spread around everyone.
While I’m not worried that Ovie is seemingly invisible most nights, i’m more worried about the quality of some of his passes as well as the lack of that ‘spark’ we are all used to seeing. It’s one thing when another team pushes all-in to stop Ovie, it’s another when he doesn’t force them to.
Refs allow play to continue....
Oh, I ain’t saying that a pokecheck was necessarily the wrong play there. Just that what we saw wasn’t an NHL pokecheck. Holtby will get better at them. He needed to flub one on a guy like Vanek to calibrate the thing

Agreed, Alzner wasn’t the problem. He happened to be the guy jumping on for a change that was bad timing. As that change was being made, Vanek had already turned and was almost to the Caps’ line. Alzner simply had too much ice to cover to get into the play. It was not a lack of effort on his part. But someone here made a good point. If you look at the four principals on the ice at the time on that play (excluding Ovechkin, who was further up ice), they are the four youngest guys on the roster (Johansson, 20; Carlson, 21; Holtby 21; Alzner, 22). These things will happen with such a young group.

Yep. We knew we’d see rookie mistakes this year, and we have. I’m not too torn up about it. Getting walked isn’t something that you just learn from once; it takes time to figure out the speed (unlike, say, forcing a bad pass and then realizing you just can’t make those in the NHL). Carlson has definitely shown some cracks in his defensive game early on this season but I have confidence he’ll get them sorted out enough by playoff time.

I’m actually having more fun watching Ovie plow an opposing player into their own bench every game this season than watching his rankings in the scoring.
It’s almost like he practiced it all summer long. He’s got it down pat.
I only caught the third period tonight. To me it looked like a “lessons learned” type of game. Practicing against a “hot goalie,” a trapping team, a team desperate for a W and a shot at an elite team. As mentioned by many, lessons better learned in November than April, and boy did I enjoy watching Braden play.

I missed most of the game since I was out of town but caught the tail end. But did notice Ovi on a line with Johansson and Knuble. And Semin with Backstrom (but I didn’t see who the other winger was — I presume Laich.)
Rocking the Red since 1975
Twice, the 8-90-22 line was out there, and one of the forwards had the puck between his feet on the boards. Both times, neither of the other two forwards went to the boards (either high or low) to give the other guy someone to pass to. The Sabres ultimately can-openered the guy on the boards for a turnover.
I don’t understand why Ovechkin won’t cycle, even when it’s really his only play.

So this is how the win streak ends?
Give the Sabres props, they gave the Caps fits and scored the big goal when it counted. Overall it was a very poorly played game by the Caps, especially in the embarrassing and atypical second period.
I almost wished the Caps hadn’t scored first so as to be able to see their competitive fire get lit as well as the red light behind the Sabres’ goalie. It almost seemed like the Caps didn’t know what to do with the lead once they had it.
Will there be less “pressure” on the Caps tomorrow with the streak over?
Yeah right. Overall, bad night for me for hockey. Flyers and Pens both won. Blues are losing. The only good news is the fact the Hershey Bears won.
The only other good news in sports is that VA Tech beat North Carolina. (W&M lost to JMU since they have no run defense to speak of.)

if everyone chips in an observation or two
Here’s one — during regulation there were 31 shots on one end of the end of the ice, and 16 on the other. The side with 31 shots had that terrible patch of ice behind the net that caused Tyler Myers to blow a tire and cough up the puck leading to Alzner’s goal. You could tell that bad ice was really affecting the D every time they tried to take the puck behind the net to keep defensive possession. That bad ice caused a lot of turnovers, and since the Caps shot on that end twice, it helped them out quite a bit.

I feel bad for Holtby (perfect pix choice above) given how well he played overall. But as Gould said above this game especially the end is a great learning experience for the kids.
I like how Holtby enjoys using his stick but this game certainly taught him to be quicker about it. I thought Mackan had a pretty good game too especially when he helped Holtby out. In the end four double majors just sucked the wind out of the guys. Blech!

four double majors
Slight exaggeration here, my friend!
But point well taken. These 2 double minors obviously didn’t do much for our guys. Hard to generate much offense when spending too much time in the box.
Rocking the Red since 1975
Okay, 3 double minors. Chimmer had one too. We had so many double minors that bloggers were saying it’s now a new rule — 4 minutes per penalty.
Or have our guys just gotten meaner, as of late.
Well, the Flyers are the model on how to beat trap teams. Except we’re emulating them in the wrong way.

Oops. Mistyped last night. Guess I should say I was majorly annoyed by the three double minors. But high sticks are high sticks, and I’d like to know what Chimmer said to get the extra. Bottom line though that many penalty minutes just wears the guys out. The question for Buffalo is why they couldn’t do more with that extra time.

So what will tomorrow’s lines look like?
Will Bruce try the following strategy?
1) Put the names of our centers in one pile.
2) Put the names of our left wingers in another pile
3) Put the names of our right wingers in a third pile
4) Draw names from each pile
Rocking the Red since 1975
Have to say that was completely random with the lines. There is only one explanation for Bruce’s confusion with line composition:
Boyd Gordon was not available. We just haven’t found a way to be perfect without Boyd Gordon.
