Don’t laugh. I bet Semin knows more English than Varly. Watching the game last night, after Semin’s hat trick, Sasha was chatting it up with Backstrom for a good minute. So unless Nick has learned Russian, I’m betting the conversation was in English. I’d love to know why he refuses to give interviews in English.
Maybe Sashes has some Swedish in him?

He said in a Russian article this summer that he didn’t feel comfortable talking to the press in English. After what happened with his comments on Crosby vs Kane, I’m sure he’s just being extra careful with the press.
And that interview was with a Russian publication, wasn’t it?
Come on Sasha, you’ve been here far longer than Varly. Just think of the good pub if you tried it. Maybe get Vogel to conduct something for the website and see how it comes out. If it doesn’t work, don’t publish it.

I think we’d collectively drop dead from a heart attack if we actually heard Semin speak. But your point is correct. He’s been here for the better part of seven years and we’ve yet to hear him utter a word in English. Amazing.

I’m holding out hopes of hearing Semin speak English on the HBO show. It would be quite amusing if they showed Semin having entire conversations with the guys in English. We all know that he knows it, sometimes he answers reporters questions before they get translated, and you see him talking to a lot of guys that don’t know Russian. I’m just impressed that he has talked to the press, even through a translator, after 3 games so far. That is like an entire season’s worth of press interaction for him.

He’s put himself in a position where he really has to talk to the press after a game.

I agree Sasha knows English – you see him on camera or at practice talking quite a bit with his team mates and coaches. Nate had tweeted after the first hat trick that Sasha was not comfortable enough with the language to be quoted in English. Which, in my opinion, is understandable. Look at all the gaffes folks make where English is their first language, let alone second. I do think with Sasha being more outgoing this season, we may see him speak in English on video to Brett/Mike post-practice or at a team event.
Nick was cute in one of the post-practice interviews this week where he could not think of the term “multi-goal” so he kept saying “more-than-one goal”.

There’s video of Nate interviewing him (in English) after he gets off a ride at the ‘09 STH party at 6 Flags (it’s on the Caps website).

Someone could dig up the 3 interviews a season he does with the press in a year and show how he answers before the questions are translated for him. That would add a few more items to the post. Also show a few clicps of him talking to Canadian boys, such as Laich on the bench after Laich was boarded to see if he was ok.

During the GM meetings I wish someone had tabled the “Fight after Clean Hit” penalty.
Refs allow play to continue....
It’s called an instigator penalty and it’s already on the books. With all the hyperbole over head shots taking the aggression out of the game, nobody seems to have issues with guys feeling they have to fight someone after a clean hit. It really is a joke. I think Corey tweeted that guys are more likely to get an instigator after a flagrant hit on one of their teammates (one where retaliation really is in order) vs. taking on someone after a clean hit.
Of course, since Comcast didn’t bother to show us a replay, I couldn’t see what transpired after the Bradley check. I’m assuming the guy went right after him.
Just trying to capture the spirit of the thing...
by dcsportsfan1 on Nov 12, 2010 8:24 AM EST up reply actions
According to Bruce, he skated all the way across the ice to go after Brads. Apparently, in the NHL you have to pull a weapon to get the instigator call.
Seeing Brads not get the instigator there, when Knuble got the instigator for going after Craig Adams on Superbowl Sunday last year, ticked me off just the slightest bit.
Kubina’s trip on Brooksie bothered me somewhat too, especially since it led directly to the Stamkos goal.
Of course, the Caps got away with one when Nicky crosschecked Dominic Moore down well behind the play, but still, in the blown-calls-department, the Caps were a -1 last night.

Recaps
I didn’t get to see the game last night, but having watched the highlights and read the recaps, it looks like Tampa played a strong game (41 shots) and got a bit unlucky (several posts), especially in the first.
The Caps played a strong second, and then Dan Ellis let in a couple of leakers in the third. It was not mentioned anywhere, but I assume that the Caps were able to exploit the Tampa D for time and space in the O zone in order to get some quality shots on net?
One game after the Caps had a distinct edge in PP opportunities over the Rangers, they got a total of 1 against the Bolts.

I feel a bit badly for them, as they are now short three of their top six forwards. That’s tough. I’ve been hoping that they’d return to respectability, and so far they haven’t disappointed. The injuries, obviously, don’t help.
Neither does having to choose between Ellis and Smith in net. Watching the replays, the 3rd (Semin’s first) and the 5th (AO) goals looked more than a little leaky…although they were from quality scoring areas and those guys can bring it.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
The 3rd was definitely leaky, Ovie looked like he just kinda surprised Ellis by going short side on that one. Semin’s 2nd though was a semi rolling puck that he just drilled. The only one I’d think was not so great was the 3rd one as you said…maybe rebound control for first 2
Everything ends badly...otherwise it wouldn't end.

I agree with you 90%, in that their 12 forwards and 6 defensemen make up 90% of their game day line up. Their goaltending is possibly the worst in the Southeast and damn near close to the worst in the NHL….

That selection is more of an idication of how little I believe in Ellis (who can be good for a stretch, but fades badly when asked to carry a true #1 load) and Smith (who sucks) than a vote of confidence in Price/Auld. I haven’t really seen a lot of the Habs this year, but they’ve only got 34 GA, and I heard some scuttlebutt that Price looks like he’s settled in.
I guess I see potential for Price to be a #1 guy, but zero for Ellis or Smith.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
What’s your opinion on Halak, then?
When you list them like above, I have to agree. I guess what I was going for is that Ellis-Smith is not bad. It’s not like facing the Oilers’ backup or anything. The Bolts should get decent goaltending most nights, and it comes cheap.
by red army line on Nov 12, 2010 11:33 AM EST up reply actions
I like (or hate, depending on how you look at it) Halak.
I am not quite as optimistic regarding Ellis and Smith as you are. I think they can be “good enough” on some nights, but they’ll cost their team games on others; too many others.
I should caveat all this by noting that I did not get to watch the game last night, so I’m going off of highlights, prior games watched and my general impressions of both of them.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
Halak is somewhat in the same boat as Ellis, but gets a pass for the playoffs (obviously that’s oversimplified, but both were 1B starting types and became backups—Halak got the starting job back by the end, though). Ellis is a really good goalie, on average. And for $1.5 million or whatever Yzerman got him for, that’s a steal. More money to upgrade elsewhere.
by red army line on Nov 12, 2010 12:08 PM EST up reply actions
I totally disagree. Ellis looks to me like a mediocre goaltender who had a great rookie year and has never been that good again. Halak, by contrast, has shown steady improvement year on year. I also think that Ellis benefited greatly from playing in Nashville, whereas Montreal isn’t exactly an easy place to be a keeper.
By the end of this season, I think that Halak will be hovering around .925, while Ellis will be a backup and will be hovering somewhere around .905, which is what he’s done pretty much every year since he was a rookie.
And I hear you talk the talk, but I don't see you walk the walk and I still don't believe a thing you say.
I’m getting ESsv% .927 (17th), .919 (33rd), and .921 (22nd). Nashville’s PK over that same time has been 3rd (85.4%), 10th (82.5%), and 28th (77.1%). Their 5-on-5 defense has been 15th (150), 13th (142), and 10th (144).
I dunno, is “mediocre” ~15th best in the league or ~30th best? I definitely think he’s starting-caliber (though I think CB would tell me otherwise) and 15th best seems right to me (Luongo, Lundqvist, Brodeur, Thomas, Miller, Vokoun, C. Mason, Anderson, Kiprusoff, Bryzgalov, Hiller are definitely better in my quick count, and about a dozen others I can’t tell for sure).
I have a hard time believing Smith will be a starter over Ellis.
by red army line on Nov 12, 2010 1:11 PM EST up reply actions
I’m getting that the guy had a worse save % two years ago than Jason LaBarbera. Ellis had a good rookie season and since then has been middle of the pack or below despite playing behind guys like Suter and Weber.
I don’t get Nashville – they actually get scored on more than you’d think given how highly everyone thinks of their goalies and defensive corps.
And I hear you talk the talk, but I don't see you walk the walk and I still don't believe a thing you say.
Is this 2008-2009? LaBarbera was an .893 in 19 games with LAK, then a .915 in 9 games with Vancouver.
by red army line on Nov 12, 2010 1:44 PM EST up reply actions
Yeah. Total: LaBarbera: .901, Ellis: .900.
So small as to be irrelevant, but still, if that’s the company you’re keeping year after year (and, with exception of his rookie season, that’s the case), you’re the definition of a mediocre goaltender.
And I hear you talk the talk, but I don't see you walk the walk and I still don't believe a thing you say.
Can I ask why you’re using overall sv% here? That’s the sort of stuff that puts Varly in replacement-level territory.

Odd fact about Dan Ellis this season. He has yet to face more than 30 shots in a game. In fact, Mike Smith has faced more than 30 only once. You’d like to see better GAA’s than they have (2.47, 3.43) with that comparatively little work

Smith’s Save Pct is .881, which speaks for itself.
Ellis is at .910, which isn’t horrible. It’s not great, either, of course.
I also don’t believe too much in Tampa’s D; I think they’ll give up too much space and allow too many shots from quality scoring areas, which doesn’t help.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
Ellis’ GAA jumped about a quarter of a goal after the Caps game, by the way.
by red army line on Nov 12, 2010 12:08 PM EST up reply actions
I think Ellis is a bit of a nut job. During every TV timeout, he would take off his mask off, go out to the blueline and start skating in tight circles for the entire two minutes. He looked like Dustin Hoffman in Rainman, only with pads. I know goalies are a little dfifferent, but he’s just bizarre.

Cristodero’s analysis:
[T]he Lightning (8-5-2) lost for the fourth time in five games while generally outplaying a Southeast Division foe and the top team in the league […] hit at least six posts, including three in the first period, two by Lecavalier and one by Marty St. Louis. Defenseman Pavel Kubina hit a post in the third with the Capitals ahead 4-3.
Homer analysis? Hard to give up 5 goals, with only one time on the PK, and think the Caps didn’t have at least a semi-decent game.

A post is a coinflip away from a goal — I don’t think anyone controls wheter or not the ring the iron or hit the twine.
Generally though, I agree with you. The Caps had a stronger game than the shot totals indicate, especially in the second and third. That first period, though…
If Semin was the best player on the ice, MSL was pretty clearly 2nd. It seemed like every time he got the puck on his stick, he was getting to a dangerous area or getting the puck to his teammate in a similarly dangerous area.
I had the game about even on the chances, but TBL just didn’t get the bounces the Caps did.

People always talk about hitting posts as if a guy missed an open net or something. Like it was some sort of bad luck or fluke. The reason most of these shots hit posts (other than being redirected by JC74’s cup) is because of goalie and/or defensive positioning. It’s not bad luck any more than a top shelf water bottle shot is good luck (unless you are John Erskine/Derek Boogaard).

It’s just you that’s a whiney, spiteful, angry old man that never has anything useful to say ever and just needs to be put out of his misery.
Kelley is a Hall of Fame writer. And while I don’t care for a lot of what he’s written in the recent past, they don’t just hand those accolades out like “I Voted” stickers. If you take issue with a column or columns of his, let’s hear why rather than just smearing the guy all over the screen.

Kelley also, for what it’s worth, has been battling cancer for more than a year now. Not that that necessarily gives someone an excuse to produce sub-par work product, but rest assured that the “misery” you’d like to see him put out of is likely quite substantial.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I didn’t know about the cancer. I hope he gets better and that misery definately wasn’t a pun. I was more alluding to his own suggestion that the ASG needs to be put out of his misery
I could go through his articles on CNN and pick and chose a million quotes but I don’t have time but if you go through, every other article he writes, he just complains about a rule, a player, an idea.
His opinion seems to be that instead of trying to improve the All-Star Game, lets just get rid of it. Instead of trying something new, lets just punt. Ok, fine. Not exactly out of the box thinking.
The NHL will not get rid of the game. It’s one of the few opportunities for the League to schmooze sponsors and try and court new ones. We are enjoying great success here in DC, but there are cities in the League where empty seats are the norm despite some quality play. The League needs all the positive exposure it can get, particularly with a new TV deal in the offing. The game is secondary anyway. I don’t think the game will be going anywhere anytime soon.
Lets just be glad they didn’t decide to award home ice to the winning conference like MLB.

Attended my first live game of the year last night. One thing about watching live, you truly get an appreciation for how fast Chimera is. His skating is just a thing of beauty. Chimera is the next in the line of lightning fast Cap third-line wingers with hands of stone. First there was Yvon Corriveau, then Todd Krygier, now Jason Chimera. Would like to see him finish more often but he does create chances and boy can he skate!
The "Other" Box Seats Blogger
You can add Mike Grier to your list, though I take exception to the initial notion that Chimmer has hands of stone.

Really? On what are you basing that? Because I completely disagree.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I just think Grier finishes better
Chimera gets more chances, though, because of his speed. Grier is slower but I think he has decent hands around the net, when opportunities arise. Not demonstrably better, maybe, but if I had to choose one to hit the back of the net from the slot, I’d pick Grier.
by DonnieKnutts on Nov 12, 2010 10:56 AM EST up reply actions
Grier’s post-lockout shooting percentage is 8.7%. Chimjera’s is 9.2%.
Chimera has four 15+ goal campaigns since the lockout, Grier has one season in which he has topped 10.
I’m just not buying Grier as the better goal-scorer of the two.

If he could finish better he would be a top 6 forward, score more goals and get more minutes. But he doesn’t finish the chances he creates.
The "Other" Box Seats Blogger
For a third-line forward, what do you expect? Nobody’s saying the guy is Alex Semin, but he’s much better than guys with actual hands of stone like David Steckel and Boyd Gordon. 15 goals with zero power play time and starting well over 50% of your shifts in the defensive zone is pretty damn good.
And I hear you talk the talk, but I don't see you walk the walk and I still don't believe a thing you say.
Right. And if he could finish better, the Caps wouldn’t have gotten him for Chris Clark and Milan Jurcina. He is what he is, and stone-handed isn’t really what he is.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Even if he doesn’t finish them, he does creates those chances. Hell, how many goals last year came off the end boards?
Just doing something with the puck can be effective so long as you have a great rush.
Many a night from yonder ivied casement, ere I went to rest,
Did I look on great Orion sloping slowly to the West.
Chimera doesn’t have hands of stone as much as he has a somewhat limited repertoire of moves. They limit his options. Guys like that are a bit easier to defend, either out in ice or by the goaltender. It is vaguely reminiscent of the early Richard Zednik days and the predictable “skate down the right side, around the faceoff dot shielding the defenseman, and launch the puck into the logo on the goalie’s chest” sort of thing.

Ah, Zed.
Tried to find footage of his first playoff goal, in ’98. On a semi-break he tried for a hard snap shot, mostly whiffed, and the puck sloooowly slid through the five hole.
My recollection of the dialogue on the bench:
Wilson: Zed, what was that?
Zednik: [thick Russian accent]: I roofed it!
Wilson: Roofed it? That was ugly…
Zednik: Yeah…
Wilson: That’s all right, first playoff goal, good job…

I also think Laich's skating is awesome to watch
I think it was last-last offseason when he talked about focusing on increasing power in his stride…he doesn’t have Chimmer’s raw speed, but he has a very powerful stride. There was a moment yesterday where he was chasing a retreating defenseman, and you could almost see the ice being kicked up under his skates.

More from recaps
From the TSN recap
Washington then took the lead at the 7:51 mark as a lucky bounce off the skate of Brooks Laich had the puck go to the right side where Mike Knuble barely got his stick on it to redirect the puck into the net.
On watching the replay, I thought this was more of a “hard work leads to good things” kind of goal. Laich fought his way through a pretty solid attempt to tie him up, managed to put the puck towards the goal, and Knuble displayed the kind of hands that have earned him a living. Also, I know they’re all good skaters, but seeing how Knuble controlled his body position and changed directions was way impressive – I could never, ever pull that off.
Also, not great rebound control by Ellis on the initial shot, as he kind of just pushed it into the slot.

And Ryan Malone’s goal was a lucky bounce off Neuvirth’s pads to his stick. Seriously, if you eliminate all the goals scored in the NHL that came off "lucky"deflections, you’d probably be left with five pure goals a week to talk about. Maybe it was a fortuitous bounce that sent the puck to Knuble, but it was hard work by Mike that put him in the right position to be able to capitalize on the deflection.

I don’t agree with this. The record may be slightly better than their play but not by a big margin. That they have the best record in the league without firing on all cylinders is a testament to how good this team is.
I don’t see how confidence in this team and what they’re capable of should be declining when they’re improving on a record-breaking season last year and still have room for improvement. Perhaps it’s just an interpretation of “confidence” but I take it as a long-term view.
I don’t know if it showed up in the TV coverage, but there were two great non-goal scenarios last night. One was Backstrom pummelling a TBL player in their end along the boards. The guy kind of took exception to it and got up and shadowed Nicky — only to be dropped hard again at the blue line.
The other was a post-whistle scrum in the Washington goal in the 3rd period. One Lighting guy was behind the goal jawwing with Green who was braced on the front of the goal, TBL player gave Green an glove/punch to the face. Matt Hendricks calmly skated around the net and grabbed the TBL player. I can’t really hear on-ice talking from up in the 400 level, but I’m pretty sure this time I heard Hendricks say, “Shut your face or I’ll break your face.” Maybe not, but that’s what it looked like.
I believe in JC.

The second blatant infraction missed by the blind zebra pair of Lee and Pollock nearly allowed Tampa to have a chance to tie the game up in the last 10 minutes. Brooks Laich was hauled down on the right wing boards in the offensive zone but play was permitted to carry on and the Lightning rush that ensued, after Laich lost the puck, resulted in NHL league leading points man, Steven Stamkos, scoring his 14th goal of the season to make it 4-3 with 7:17 left. A loud chorus of boos rained down on Lee and Pollock after the Stamkos tally.
I didn’t get to watch this game due to work, but when I came home and watched the highlights it eventually came to Stamkos’ goal. But when it started out I was wondering why I’m being shown a penalty instead of a goal sequence….oh wait…its not a penalty? and he scores on horrific officiating? cool deal.
Not only was Laich hauled down, he was sent face first into the boards because of it. Throw the bolts a boarding or hooking like it should be called FFS
Bruce Boudreau when asked about Brooks Laich's return to the lineup, he said: "He just adds another dimension to our team. If it was puzzle, he just fits that thing. He completes us."

That’s Stamkos’ second goal from right on top of the crease in the last two games. When was the last time AO scored from right on top of the crease? Game tying goal v. NJD? (Probably not, but I love that goal and can’t think of another after it.)

One of the more impressive things I saw Semin do last night? He had three takeaways, including two in which he straight up picked the pocket of a Tampa player.
Seriously. Good Sasha was in full force last night.
The takeaways were the most impressive part for me, too – his goals were fine, he’s a great goal-scorer, but for me there’s nothing quite like watching him get the puck away from someone else. I think at least two of those three takeaways initially looked to me like lost causes and I was just happy to see Sasha pestering the puck-carrier…and then suddenly he had the puck and was skating the other way. Amazing.
If anyone needs me, I'll be at Kettler.
There’s a pretty fine line between pick-pocketing and stick penalty there, though. On each I was holding my breath just a little bit, hoping Sasha’s stick wouldn’t ride up into the Bolt’s hands or midsection.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Well, there always is, no? Hence (part of) the reason he’s taken so many stick penalties over the years.
I think the difference is the amount of effort. If he’s trying hard to keep up with the guy and focus on the puck rather than the body, he’ll usually avoid a penalty. If he’s not skating hard and the guy is getting past him, an attempt to steal the puck away turns into an attempt simply to catch the other player, which turns into 2 minutes.
If anyone needs me, I'll be at Kettler.
Right – when he skates hard, he’s able to make the right play. When he half-asses it, he ends up waterskiing.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I also suspect reputation with the refs plays a role. I can’t help but to wonder if Semin’s positive pub so far this year is helping him get (or avoid) calls that might have gone against him in the past. I’m thinking specifically of a play in the Rangers (?) game where he drew a penalty for a fairly benign hold.
I don’t think so. His early reputation as a diver has stuck with him hard despite the fact that he hasn’t been much of a diver for going on 3 seasons now.

Green must be having bad dreams of that Moore goal he was burned on in Game 7 last April.

It wasn’t Green that got burned on that goal… it was a weak backchecking effort from Carlson that allowed Moore to get open.

Got a great question last night from my 13-year-old daughter shortly after the Semin’s empty netter. Her first question was “why” the hats were raining upon the ice. My DVR allowed me to back up to the commercial with the guy in the hat store, which was nice.
The killer question was “what does he [Semin] do with all the hats”.

Congratulations, Kyle Wilson! He’s moving up to the Blue Jackets’ top line tonight against the Avalanche b/c Rick Nash is injured.

Glad to see the Jax making good use of guys the Caps had no use for. Perhaps they’d be interested in Francois Bouchard and Flash for Jan Hejda.

I would definitely like that, but do Fransh and Flash “play hockey the right way”?

Over Half a Day Has Passed...
…and I’m still pissed at the instigator non-call.
BUT! I am happy that I got to see Good Sasha, Mean Lars and Fast Chimmer all out in full force last night. Backstrom putting the other 19 on the ice twice in the same shift might have been my favorite part of the night.

PPP on Phil Kessel and streakiness. One of the comparables is Alexander Semin, and he stacks up well compared to the others.
Horrible news for F&B and my other fellow David Backes fans. Backes signs a five year deal with the Blues, per Bob McKenzie. :(

Not at all, but I was hoping Blues management would spend the whole year smoking crack or something and forget to sign him.

Good deal for the Blues. He would have looked great as our 2C.

If Backes is 4.5, then Brooks Laich shouldn’t be above 4.

That’s his first UFA contract, right?
I really like Backes. If I recall correctly he plays either RW or C, correct?
His GVT was only 7.1 last year, though, so $4.5M is a lot of cheese. I suppose they do lock him up for his prime, though.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
If I’m remembering correctly, he’s also in line for captaincy when Brewer is gone.
The guy is Peter Schumpmaker. Lord knows what a schump is, but you can bet your bippy his ancestors made them. What he's doing is far worse than crafting fine schumps.

I never thought he’d be coming here anyway. If he makes one of their other centers expendable then maybe we can pounce on that guy, as long as it’s not Boyes.
Lockout talk makes me want to go out and choke an old lady - Elliotte Friedman
I think Boyes probably needs a change of scenery for him to improve – it’s not like injuries have ruined his skills – though I’m not necessarily sure the Caps want him here. He might be an option if nobody else shows up at the trade deadline.
At 4 million this year and next I don’t think he’s viable. I agree he needs a change of scenery, but he’s too much of a risk for us at that price. Unless they give him away we need to find someone that is more affordable, and preferably on an expiring contract.

Plus, we’ve got enough wing/centers. We need a legit #2C, not someone who’s really just a wing who can moonlight as a C.
And I hear you talk the talk, but I don't see you walk the walk and I still don't believe a thing you say.
Exactly. I’m still on the Weiss train. Perfect for what we need now and is the kind of guy that could seamlessly transition to 3C should one of our young kids prove ready for 2C before his contract expires.

What’s the trade? Weiss has $3.1 million per yr through 2013.
Not saying I dislike at all, just genuinely curious what moves you’d make to get him.

home just in time to see Semin was snubbed! Not quite Mike Green snubbed by Team Canada level, but left off the All Star ballot, which is a pretty damn big snub, imo. Puck Daddy has more.

Isn't the balloting only for the top six guys?
While Semin may be deserving of being included in the discussion, I’m pretty sure he’ll be one of the guys getting picked by NHL operations for the fantasy draft.

Why are you so sure? The same people who picked this top 100 are the people that will be picking those 36 players.
Aim for the head baby Jesus
After they left off Green and Backstrom in 2009, I’d advise Semin to just book his tickets for the All-Star weekend to Florida already.
