From the THN piece...

12 — Appearances by New Jersey goaltender Martin Brodeur. He and Washington’s Michal Neuvirth (11 games) were the only goaltenders to play in all of their team’s games during October. Brodeur started 11 games and relieved Johan Hedberg in the other.

Do the Caps have a reliable 20-game or so backup? Is Varlamov that guy? Will Varlamov get 20 games this year? Will he be healthy for 20 games this year? Will Braden Holtby get a game this week? Will I use 10 question marks in this post????

If you've read this far...seek help.

Will he be healthy for 20 games this year?

All were good questions (anything from Peerless is), but this one is the most important, isn’t it?

"It's always good to have vikings."

by gfcaps fan on Nov 1, 2010 7:47 AM EDT up reply actions

At this point I think the first question is more important. If Varly is that guy…great. But if he’s not, what/who else does the team have? I mentioned it in the most recent Varly is hurt thread…but are any of us really that comfortable with Sabourin being the full time back-up?

by Yoshietree on Nov 1, 2010 8:35 AM EDT up reply actions

To answer your last question, not me. Which is why I considered Varly’s health the most important. If he can’t stay healthy, Holby’s the best backup in the organization at the moment (and needs to be the starter in Hershey, not the Washington backup). At least we think he is, as he hasn’t gotten any game time yet. If you’re afraid to put your backup on the ice, you’re going to risk burning out your starter (see Brodeur, Marty, etc).

"It's always good to have vikings."

This is probably the perfect example of a conversation that will go in circles or better yet chicken or the egg. I think my issue is that I’ve already succombed to the fact that Varlamov’s health makes him unreliable…even as a solid 20 game back-up…

by Yoshietree on Nov 1, 2010 9:02 AM EDT up reply actions

I’ll agree with you about the conversation. I’m not giving up yet, but very concerned.

We should get Dwayne Roloson as a backup for insurance. He could come useful as a backup enforcer and intimdator.

I am kidding but Kelly Hrudey was showing a bit on him between periods on HNIC Saturday and DR doesn’t back down from anyone. I wonder what he would have done to Briere if he had been in net against PHI on the weekend.

Also he has luck against Tampa Bay: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bo73VtyfvTU

by Rather Bengt on Nov 1, 2010 9:30 AM EDT up reply actions

I think Roloson would be great with Washington, if just for this season.

There were so many calls in the offseason by reporters for the Caps to get a veteran goaltender, but it seemed for the wrong reason. They thought that they needed that veteran presence, but really they just need a backup that will be healthy enough to play when Neuvirth needs his rest.

by RCheli on Nov 1, 2010 11:10 AM EDT up reply actions

On a tangent: I hated seeing Hrudey praise Roloson for that bullshit. The guy on the other team clearly was tripped and that’s why he slid into Roloson (hence that penalty shot thingy afterwards). Suck it up you big baby, you don’t have to get all indignant every time someone touches you, especially if it’s because your own D took him out.

In All Seroiusness...

Sarich wouldn’t be a bad option for a #6 Defenseman if the Caps are looking to add some defensive depth. He is usually more reliable and that was a bit of a fluke. I don’t see it happening though, as Calgary’s D is also lacking in depth…

CI Squared

I gotta preface this by saying that it takes some cojones (or chutzpah if you prefer) to write stats analysis pieces for Caps Insider. Furthermore I’ve got no idea regarding the space and content limitations placed on those pieces, or what the editors do to them before they get posted.

With that being said, this morning’s CI Squared piece had me scratching my head again because of an obvious omission that explains the data he presents. Ovie’s power play quality of shot is low and comparable to Mike Green’s and Tom Poti’s. . . because he plays the point on the power play.

If you acknowledge this fact, it leads into an interesting philosophical discussion (or as philosophical as hockey can get, anyway): are the benefits of playing Ovechkin at the point on the PP outweighed by the costs?

I have a couple non-Caps fan friends who come with me to games when they’re in town (sacrilege, I know). To a man, they all hate putting Ovechkin on the point because they think it’s a waste of his talents and a defensive breakdown waiting to happen. Personally, I like putting Ovie on the point because it allows him to play the majority of every power play. I’m not a fan of 1:35 shifts at even strength, but when the Caps are a man up, I want the most dangerous player on earth © Damospin on the ice.

Given the stats in the CI squared piece, there’s a larger context to consider: is the marginal benefit gained by having Ovie taking higher percentage shots (if you believe that he would score at a higher rate than Laich/Knuble/Fehr/Flash) greater than the marginal benefit gained by having Ovie play almost the entire power play (instead of Poti/Carlson/???)?

For the time being, I’d like to see the Caps return to a more traditional PP with Ovie located down on the half-boards/faceoff circle (think where Stamkos sets up on the TB power play). This isn’t because I don’t like Ovie on the point, but it’s primarily because I think the team needs to develop John Carlson’s power play skills so that we can present teams with different looks and hedge against potential injuries to Mike Green. I’d rather the Caps invest in that development now, rather than try to pull it out of their ass in April when a team figures out how to shut down Ovie on the point.

Anyhow, I don’t want to seem unduly critical of the CI Squared work, I just wish that the author would take the next step of offering up analysis as opposed to just presenting statistics sans context.

'Cause the end of what it was is what it is right now...

I just wish that the author would take the next step of offering up analysis as opposed to just presenting statistics sans context.

Another piece of context for this piece that could use some analysis is a look at how teams are defending Ovi. He may not have that prime scoring ice available to him. We all marvel at how he was left all alone in his first game vs CBJ in which he scored two goals. That doesn’t happen much anymore.

You perhaps knew me better as "Your Nation's Capital." Same great commentary, now with 100% more transparency!

by EmilyB on Nov 1, 2010 8:45 AM EDT up reply actions

I don’t know if I’d call it a lack of context, so much as “merely” an incomplete picture (although we had the same thought reading the piece). After all, the immediate counter to your (and my first thoughts) would be, "is it better to have 50 seconds from a “good” scoring position or 1:25 from a less likely area?

In the end I usually chalk it up to writing under a deadline. A lot of good (or at least more complete) stories go over the side because a writer has to produce “finished” copy by 5 pm.

I don’t know that the Post is interested in really deep statistical analysis (I suspect most folks like a little lighter reading with their morning coffee than modeliing the graphical solutions for n-dimensional data, but one thing the analysis does not do is offer as a basis for the conclusions a plot of the places from where shots were taken. One intuitive notion is that the one-timer from the circles is being taken away from him, either to deny him the shot (putting a shadow on him) or by getting a forward or defenseman in position to block the shot. It’s not as if teams haven’t seen this before — a lot. And young Mr. Stamkos is going to have his book written for him before too long to keep him from getting that one timer from the inside of the circles.

If you've read this far...seek help.

I think the league has already started to make those adjustments. In the first seven games, Stamkos averaged 4.5 shots a game. In the last three, 2 shots a game. And in the first seven games he had eight goals, in the last three just one. If he’s going to reach 50 goals this season, he’s going to have to adjust to the league’s adjustment.

by b.orr4 on Nov 1, 2010 9:28 AM EDT up reply actions

But in those same three games, he has 4 assists to go along with his goal. He’s a much better NHL player than I though he would be.

I am just now learning how to pull the (x,y) coordinates from the play by play data but am still a long way’s away from being able to show that graphically.

I agree tho, it would be helpful and is something I am working on for the future – esp to go with my logging of scoring chances.

For now, I just have probability data.

by 5ive Hole on Nov 1, 2010 9:20 AM EDT up reply actions

Almost every time I saw Stamkos score last season, it was from the same space on the ice. From my predictions preview of the TBL:

Stamkos was a breakout player last year, and will continue to rack up the goals as long as opposing penalty killers leave him wide open for one timers on the power play.

.

also from that same preview,

Key losses: Brandon Bochenski (UFA, Barys Astana), Todd Fedoruk (UFA, free agent), Kurtis Foster (UFA, Edmonton), David Hale (UFA, Ottawa), Zenon Konopka (UFA, Islanders), Andrej Meszaros (trade, Philadelphia), Antero Niittymaki (UFA, San Jose), Alex Tanguay (UFA, Calgary), Dan Ellis’ Twitter Feed (Greg Wyshynksi & fan backlash)

A piece of conext I’d love to have seen there is how the shots AO has taken so far this year compare to what he’s done in the past. For example, a quick look at BtN shows that his average 5v5 shot distance last year was 35.3 feet. This year so far he’s at 38.3. In 2008-09, that was only 33.8. So over the past two seasons, his average 5v5 shot distance has gone up more than 13%. Obviously that doesn’t tell the whole story, but to me it sounds somewhat significant.

But I do know that those posts are edited down quite a bit.

That’s a terrible trend. You’d hope he would move away from just trying to take the long distance wrist shots, but these numbers suggest he’s relying even more on them. That makes no sense when he plays with Nick and Knuble, two guys that are relatively excellent on the cycle. When he had scraps for linemates it makes sense that he’d do it all on his own, but now he has legitimate top line talent, and it doesn’t seem like he uses them optimally.

For the time being, I’d like to see the Caps return to a more traditional PP with Ovie located down on the half-boards/faceoff circle

When Green is healthy, the Caps have been employing a 1-3-1 powerplay formation, have they not? This puts Green at the point, Ovi and Semin on the half-walls, Backstrom roaming in the middle, and Laich/Knuble on net. They may have deviated from this with the simultaneous losses of Green and Poti, but I think this is the formation they try to roll.

You’re right, but Ovechkin doesn’t play the typical point position on the power play.

by RCheli on Nov 1, 2010 11:12 AM EDT up reply actions

I definitely want AO off the point. He could still take ~1:20 if he was set up lower on the LW and I don’t want him taking 2 minute shifts at the point anyway. The extra few seconds he can take at the point aren’t worth it to me. He’s a shark, and he’s great at finding soft spots and pouncing loose pucks. He’ll be more deadly if he’s down near the net pouncing pucks. Imagine if that loose puck against MIN squirted to AO instead of Nick. I also think he needs to begin adjusting his style of play now. Right now. His days of being penciled in as a 50 goal scorer just because he can beat goalies with 50 foot wrist shots are coming to a close. He needs to start channeling his inner Brendan Shannahan so he can extend the amount of time that he’s an elite goal scorer. Having him lower on the PP would be a start (as would having him cycle more at ES). I don’t want him right in front of the net at all times, but I think he should swing through that area; he’s still a bull, and if he tries to establish position in the middle of the ice down low he will single handedly collapse the PK box and create a ton of room on the outside for the rest of the team. He’s also easier to isolate and exploit at the point. A quality PK forward can push out toward him and force him to stay high in the corner of the zone if he wants to maintain his open space. Then, late in the PK, he’s just a SH breakaway waiting to happen. I can’t count how many times Ryan Callahan has gotten a SH breakaway from playing AO aggressively.

by Rob Parker on Nov 1, 2010 12:38 PM EDT up reply actions   2 recs

I somewhat disagree. He doesn’t really play the point on the PP. He’s technically in the defenseman’s “spot,” but he’s generally down along the half wall like taking the shots that he took against Calgary. Moving him down low would decrease the chance for him to take that shot which seems to work out pretty well (and I’m not just looking at the one game).

I do agree with what you’re saying about the SH breakaways though.

by red army line on Nov 1, 2010 1:07 PM EDT up reply actions

For a large portion of most PPs, he is out near the blue line. He does just like Green – he shifts further into the zone to get into a shooting position.

There is no problem a hammer cannot either fix or make irrelevant.

by timmyv38 on Nov 1, 2010 1:37 PM EDT up reply actions

And in terms of wanting him to have a longer shift on the PP, there’s another consideration. If he’s on the point he has to chase the puck down the ice on the clear and then skate all the way back. If he plays F he can hang out at the offensive blueline, skate less, and stretch the hell out of the PK D, possibly allowing Green and Carlson more open ice to skate the puck up.

by Rob Parker on Nov 1, 2010 12:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Thanks for the constructive feedback D’ohboy.

is the marginal benefit gained by having Ovie taking higher percentage shots (if you believe that he would score at a higher rate than Laich/Knuble/Fehr/Flash) greater than the marginal benefit gained by having Ovie play almost the entire power play (instead of Poti/Carlson/???)

For me I think Ovi playing the entire PP on the point is not more beneficial. I would rather someone else man the point.

Plus, it is not just on the PP, but 5v5 where I see his shot quality not as good as it can be. Taking shots with a 6-8% chance of going in cause you to fight a lot of factors to end up with a Sh% of 12%+ which is where he is on average for his career.

That being said, I don’t have access to the data for previous years, so I don’t know if this is normal or not – just what I have recorded in the first 11 games of this year.

It could be Ovi is being defended different based on MTL playoff game.

I will keep this in mind tho for future articles and try to be more clear.

Lockout talk makes me want to go out and choke an old lady - Elliotte Friedman

by Rob Parker on Nov 1, 2010 12:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Thanks for coming on here to chat about it. I agree that his shot quality 5v5 isn’t spectacular, but analytically, I think that’s a different (and much more worrisome) issue than his power play shot selection (which is driven by his position on the point).

I said this during last year’s playoffs, but it bears repeating now: defensemen and goalies are learning to take away Ovie’s “outside-inside, fire a snapshot using the defenseman as a screen” move. When that move was a change of pace from sweeping wide and trying to get around the defenseman and establish body position before driving to the net, it worked. Somewhere along the way, Ovie stopped driving wide and the outside-inside move became his go-to move. Teams have adjusted, and it’s an inherently low-probability shot if the goalie is prepared for it.

This leaves pretty much two answers – either Ovie isn’t aware of this tendency and just needs to start driving wide again, or (and this is the really scary alternative), he’s lost a step and simply can’t get around the edge on most defensemen anymore. Personally, I think it’s bit of both, with another factor thrown in – the first couple years out of the lockout (when Ovie used to score more of his one-on-one goals), the league still had a bunch of plodding dinosaur defensemen. As those players have retired/moved on to other leagues/seen their ice time diminish, they’ve been replaced by kids like Drew Doughty and Duncan Keith, kids whose lateral speed makes those one-on-one moves a hell of a lot more difficult.

Regardless of the cause, I think Ovie needs to sweep wide a little more often to keep defensemen honest. Even if it means circling around the net and picking Nicky or Knuble up as a trailer, it would force the defenseman and the keeper to respect the outside move, thereby opening up the center of the ice again.

Another alternative (which Ovie has used on occasion) would be to cut inside, but rather than take a snapshot, he could continue across the zone to the far boards. This would force the defenseman to make a choice – either switch off to maintain positioning or cross over to maintain coverage. Either way, Ovie would force them to do something awkward and he’d open up more ice for his linemates. The one problem with this move is that it would likely not work that well with Knuble on the ice, since he doesn’t have the lateral speed to fill the far lane on the rush.

I don’t think AO has lost a step.

I think the real solution is to let Nick carry the puck into the zone.

I don’t think AO has lost a step.

I’d like to think this, too, but I’m having a hard time figuring out why he has voluntarily stopped going wide one-on-one.

by D'ohboy on Nov 1, 2010 1:01 PM EDT up reply actions

I think he never had as much success doing it so he just got away from it. It’s an even harder play for him and it puts him on the backhand. The only reason he was able to get away with it early in his career was because the D were figuring out the proper gap control. Now they have it down better and he’s just not getting anything done like that. I can’t remember the last time he actually created something trying to beat a D wide. As low percentage as the cut-across-the-middle shot is, the drive wide to the backhand is even lower.

by Rob Parker on Nov 1, 2010 1:08 PM EDT up reply actions

The mental image I have of the play only involves him being on his backhand very briefly before getting his body around the defenseman and pulling it back forehand. He used to do that (along with playing the puck through the triangle), much more often.

That was also back when he was blowing through defenders because they didn’t realize how strong he was. No one in the league plays him that way, anymore.

To be honest, Ovie hasn’t looked as quick to me so far this season. Considering the fact that Ovechkin also said he changed his off-season trainer and tried a new conditioning regimen, it makes you wonder what impact that has had on his game early in the season.

I don’t know how often you wade into the comments here, but the context thing is something I harp on, primarily because I remember the “stats vs. scouts” debates in baseball, and I remember just how much time and energy was wasted because of it.

Ultimately, I put a lot of the blame for that on the SABR/stats community. They had a bunch of great data that upturned the analytical apple cart, but they often failed to present it in a way that the traditional scouting community found palatable. They were so certain in their data though (and often with good reason), that they failed to understand how others might react to it.

Hockey is even further behind baseball in its attitudes toward statistics, and unlike baseball, hockey can’t be broken down as effectively into discrete events. Therefore, context become as important, or even more important than the data itself.

'Cause the end of what it was is what it is right now...

I read Japers’ Rink quite a bit, but don’t usually comment.

Sometimes space/time/access to data causes an article to not be as fully developed as I like (and that’s on me, not anyone else) and I too fall victim to being “certain of the data” as you describe it.

I do appreciate your criticism tho, and think you’re right re: context and will try to include it more in my work.

No worries. That’s why there was the massive preface to my comment. I once wrote a “hockey 101” article for my school newspaper when Denver got the Avs back in 1995. The editors chopped it up until it was factually incorrect and it made me look pretty foolish. After that, I figured I’d give folks the benefit of the doubt when it appeared as though stuff had to be left on the cutting room floor.

I like this too

Paul Gardner, who had a fraction of the talent possessed by Crosby or Malkin, led the NHL in power-play goals with 21. That year’s man-advantage unit utilized an ingenious system of picks based on basketball plays.

So the goal is to now commit penalties to open up the PP?

those are always tough. It isn’t illegal to use body position to lengthen an opponent’s path to the puck either with stillness or by skating on an intercept. If you are still, you can’t reach out with your stick or free hand, but if the defender runs into you, it isn’t interference. If you are skating on an intercept, you may not make contact of any kind with the defending player.

And if you and the other non-puck-possessing player are skating in the same direction you can “block” the opponents path. All would constitute a “pick” but none (with the above exceptions) would be a penalty.

well, it wasn’t interference because the defender was backing off half-wall TO ESTABLISH position. Semin is not responsible for contact if he moves between the circles and a defender backs into him. Semin has an equal right to establish body position. If Glencross (I think) had already established his PK position rather than backing off of Greenie than it’s totally a penalty.

….Briere gets 3 games and he’s on the repeat offender list.

The NHL needs to start getting suspensions right though. After determining the length of the suspension, the first games the player is suspended should be games against the opponent that he committed the infraction against, meaning Briere should miss the Flyers’ next 3 games against the Islanders. If not enough games remain, then the player starts missing the next games in the schedule…

Speaking of Ovie and Green, the best part of the Calgary game for me was seeing Ovie be fairly low-key on the other goals and then absolutely tackle Green, haul him to the ground and pin him there for a minute after 52 scored. It wasn’t a completely spontaneous injury that seems to occur to his groin during practice with the Caps. Once he healed up from the groin and knee injuries last season, he actually didn’t get injured the rest of the season. It did take him some time to get back to his usual level of play. Poor Varly, he has to be disappointed with how the season has gone so far, and he put in all the extra effort coing early to workout to prevent injuries. I hope Irbe works with him to change his style if possible to prevent some of these issues.

I heard about the “practice” part (on the twitter on SHOE) but the Caps have not “officially” reassigned him to Hershey.

Suppose Sabourin is so far in the doghouse that they’d rather have Varly (with his wonky groin) be the backup to Ford. (Okay, I’m kidding on this note here.)

by Yoshietree on Nov 1, 2010 10:45 AM EDT up reply actions

Flash is an adequate winger and I think he deserved a shot to prove that he could play C. I thought that, with a summer to develop his faceoff skills and adjust, he might be a passable enough #2C to get us to the trade deadline. At worst, I thought he’d be at least as good as post-November Brendan Morrison. Personally, I think this is what GMGM and BB told themselves during the off-season.

I think we were all wrong. As a center, Flash drags down the wingers who play with him. He loses possession off the faceoff and doesn’t work/is incapable of regaining it. He misses neutral zone and defensive zone coverages with regularity. He’s constantly chasing the play, rather than anticipating it.

Laich isn’t a great center, but at least that line won’t have to start every shift trying to get the puck back from their opponent. The problem is that Semin and Flash aren’t a good pair to have as wings, because nobody on that line will go into the corners to get the puck.

'Cause the end of what it was is what it is right now...

Right now, it looks like they’re going to try Semin on Ovechkin’s wing, and Knuble as the second-line right wing. And that sort of makes sense to me.

Yeah. You basically need to do that, although the alternative would be to move Fehr to #2L and demote Flash.

Now that I have the numbers in front of me, Fehr was #2 on the Caps, 14th in the league, behind Feds, who was 3rd.

Fehr had a Corsi Rel of 15.9. Brooks Laich, David Steckel, Sergei Fedorov, and Tomas Fleischmann were his most frequent linemates. He had the 5th highest Corsi Rel QoC on the Caps with the 7th lowest Corsi Rel QoT. He won’t be getting that 6th best Zonestart (among forwards) again, until he cements a top-6 role, but at least that one season Fehr had is very promising and suggests Fehr could take on a larger role.

Fair enough. For some reason neither behindthenet or dobberhockey are working today (did the Pentagon tighten the noose?). How did those 2008-09 numbers compare to last years and to small sample size we have this year?

by Yoshietree on Nov 1, 2010 2:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Really? Working fine for me.

Here’s what I’m getting. All ratings are relative to the other Caps, 5-on-5. “Very” means top or bottom ~3-5 on the team (I’m not filtering for games played, but often the guys higher or lower had just a handful of games played.)

QoC, from 07-08 to this season: very low, high, middling, low
QoT: very low, low, very low, very low
zonestart: very high, middling, middling, middling
+/-ON60: very high, high, high, middling
Corsi Rel: high, very high, middling, low

2007-2008: weak competition, weak teammates, very easy zonestart, and he did well in those minutes.

2008-2009: hard competition, weak teammates, okay zonestart, and did very well in those minutes.

2009-2010: “meh” competition, weak teammates, okay zonestart, and performed “meh” to “acceptable.”

2010-2011: Probably his worst line to date, but it’s something that can get changed around within the next month, if not sooner.

At least, that’s my take.

The perfect response. It’s a coin flip for me…..on one hand I still want to see what Fehr can do against tougher QoC for an extended period of time. On the other, Fehr was dreadful during the first two games. How much of that can be blamed on Flash? Who knows…but the Wild game definitely was not one of Fehr’s finer moments.

When you’re not good at gaining or maintaining possession of the puck, you’re going to make your linemates look bad. Flash ameliorates this somewhat by being really freaking talented and pulling some great plays out of his butt. Unfortunately, his unwillingness/inability to do all the other little things required of hockey players makes him a liability.

I’d buy it for last season. As far as I can tell Laich doesn’t up your Corsi 3 percentage points like Semin, Backstrom, AO, and others—he just plays at your level, whatever that is, and does the things to complement the passers and shooters on your line. Similar to Knuble.

It seemed that Laich and Flash were actually switching positions as the game flowed. Laich is taking the face offs, but once the puck was dropped and the faceoff settled, as the play went on, Laich was playing more like a wing and Flash more like a center. Laich was mixing it up in the corners, going to the bakery net, etc. much like a wing does, and Flash was more up high in the zone, playing like a center.

Me, I like this concept. I did this when I was in high school in New York. The guy who had the talent on our line played center but he weighed about 105 pounds without his equipment, so taking face offs wasn’t a good idea. I played at 185 in high school (I was heavy then and 6 foot, the guy playing center was 5 foot 4) so I took the face-offs and we’d switch as the play flowed after the draw.

Just saw this from Katie:

Defensemen
Poti-Green
Schultz-Alzner
Sloan/Erskine-Carlson

Huh? Is that to put a steadier support with Alzner? Yes, I know it’s only Monday and the game isn’t for two days. It just strikes me as weird. Why would you intentionally break up Green and Schulz?

If Carlson’s playing on the 3rd line, maybe it’s preparing for the chance that he’s actually rested on Wed to recover from whatever injury has been plaguing him?

Hmmm, an update:

Capitals Coach Bruce Boudreau said defenseman Tom Poti is “questionable” for Wednesday’s game against Toronto, and said the assignment of Brian Fahey to Hershey is not necessarily an indication that Poti or Tyler Sloan will be ready to play.

Oh, and my mistake, it’s not Katie reporting today, which explains the lack of twitter updates from her (not that she tweets a lot).

Alzner hasn’t looked great, so I would agree with you, putting him with Schultz is an attempt to give him some extra support. Complete speculation on my part, of course.

I disagree. You don’t put a struggling player in a higher responsibility role. I think Alzner been pretty good, and playing with Schultz is an indication that BB trusts him out there with high minutes against relatively tough assignments.

I don’t know, but he’s also had rotating partners. I think he’s played a solid defensive game and generally been in good position, which is what I’ve expected. He’s had his growing pains, but not as many or as glaring as Carlson’s, IMO. I’m pleased with him.

Yeah, not a total pass. I didn’t run the numbers considering TOI (I should’ve just checked BtN instead of NHL.com). Looks like Carlson thus far has been on ice for much more offense, and Alzner for much better defense (link). As it is, I’m not sure how much to read into Carlson’s gaffes considering he’d basically become a 1D for a few games, as a 20 year old. Like with Poti potentially making fewer mistakes given less PKTOI, I get the feeling Carlson will look better with less TOI.

I’d rather face MAF. It might be tough to get that first goal in but it always seems like once the first is put up, many more will follow.

That and I really don’t find MAF to be a high end goalie. He had one really strong year and put up like a .94% in the playoffs when they lost in the finals. When they won the cup though he was relatively unspectacular, really average stats.

It’s funny, I actually had forgotten he was out w/ that foot thing back in September and drafted him to my fantasy team; realized it after the fact but figured he’d be back and would be a good guy to hang on to. This morning I got tired of waiting and dropped him, then read he was planning to come back and tried to undo the drop (which you can’t do, he has to go through waivers first). Juice had not had good health since the Olympics (or was it just before).

Ironically enough, two years ago, he was actually the only healthy guy among the Caps regular defensemen. We had Poti, Green, Schultz, Oisk, Morrisonn injured during the Nov/Dec time frame, many at the same time. And we’re not even counting Pothier’s concussion.
