top burning questions about the capitals
1. Will Ted Leonsis improve concessions to the point where he and Boudreau will even eat there?
Good on Calgary for signing B-Mo. With their depleted offensive corps at the moment (Langkow, Kotalik etc out), it’s a good move. And if last year was any indication, by the time most of these guys will be returning come mid-season B-Mo should be starting his flameout (pun inetnded).

jerseys
i think the knock about it being a ‘patch’ on the WC jerseys is a bit much. Come on, it looks good (for an rbk jersey) from afar and will probably look great on TV on the 1st too. However, those throwback 75th anniversary Hershey jerseys don’t inspire much….snooze
I tend to agree about the reaction to the “patch” being a bit much (I commented to a buddy yesterday that I thought I was annoyed with the WC jerseys because they were a lame patch rather than sewn on letters, but it turns out that I’m annoyed with the WC jerseys because of the complaining that has resulted from the use of the lame patch rather than sewn on letters).
That said, if it was individually sewn letters, I’d have probably bought one. Now I likely won’t. Bottom line: they could be better, but they’re not, and chances are pretty good that they’ll still play the game on January 1.

I feel strongly about it. Because I want a legit jersey that looks like the one Bob Gould used to wear. And it’s impossible to find one anywhere. Seriously, hit the internet and try — you can’t get an individually sewn on letters jersey anywhere. I was hoping this would be my big shot to get one.
I can say for sure, if they were sewn on letters, I’d have gotten one. Now I won’t.

Solution:
Buy one of these. Take it to a tailor. Show them the picture of the old jersey, or better yet, show them an example from a friend’s jersey.
Have them remove the patch and replace it with individually sewn letters.
Fork over some $$$.
Done.

I don’t understand why the convention didn’t have a special Winter Classic store full of jerseys open right after the unveiling. As it is, the jerseys won’t be available ’til at least November, maybe even December. Why bother introducing them without having them available for sale?

New ones are pretty god, except for the red lettering on the white jerseys. I mean.. the word “capitals” on the front is blue. Why shouldn’t the numbers also be blue? The captain’s C is blue.. but the name/number are not. I don’t get it.

HF usually is really good for the most part on giving you the skinny on players and categorizing them, however, way too many goalies in their top 10. Goalies are usually the sketchiest players to predict. Nothing against Varly, but Carlson has shown too much as a 20yr old to be behind more than few of players listed including Varly.

I completely agree. I bet half those goalies don’t pan out to what they are hyped to be. And John Carlson as the Caps’ PP QB? Did they do any research?

I just think I’d make my elite prospects the players that are more likely to pan out. I would probably never put a goalie above a B, and most would be a C or D just because of how unpredictable position it is. I’ll take a whole bunch of skaters over any of the goalies on that list.

Finally got around to reading last week’s SI last night. It co ntained their hockey preview. They pick the Caps to win the Cup.
I am officially depressed.
Side note: I remember as a kid eagerly anticipating the SI season previews, which I would pore over multiple times, parsing each sentence, memorizing the info on the bottom-of-the-depth-chart guys. It was the only source out there if you were interested in, say, Winnipeg’s third pairing. Now all that info is so easily available, and in much better (and meaningful depth) that I barely skimmed the article. How times change.

If Neuvy and Varly (and Holtby) are the Caps’ future in net, and none of them older than 22, why are we suddenly stockpiling goalie prospects?
You perhaps knew me better as "Your Nation's Capital." Same great commentary, now with 100% more transparency!
You can never have too many quality netminders in the system. Look at Nashville over the past handful of years, for example.
And I don’t think they’re stockpiling young Gs any more than they’re stockpiling young C’s or D’s…
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Or look at SJS. They had Nabokov, and Kipper, and Toskala (when he was good) and then they decided to stop stockpiling. Now they have Niemi and Nitty. Of course, the death of Strehlow was probably a huge factor as well, so maybe it wasn’t related to stockpiling. Basically, I just agree that you can never have too many.

-Injuries happen
-Contract issue happen
-Trades happen
-Prospects don’t always pan out
Imagine if any one of them has an amazing season right as his contract ends, suddenly he (deservedly) wants a bigger contract than GMGM can afford to pay, then we’ve got to trade him or let him go and replace him with a newer guy. Look at what happened to Varly this past season, injured, recovered, then injured again with a different injury right as he was coming back to playing.
LET'S GO CAPS!!!
Again… once upon a time, the Caps had two future Vezina winners and another goalie who would win 171 games in the NHL on its roster in the same season.
The next season, one of those goalies (Byron Dafoe) was traded — in one of the worst trades in the history of earth — to the Kings with Dmitri Christich for the Kings’ 1st round pick in 1996 and Dallas’ 4th, which the Kings had. The Caps used that 1st rounder to select Alexandre Volchkov.
The season after that, one of the goalies that would win a Vezina would suddenly forget how to play the position, get traded to Boston, and be out of hockey by 2000.
You just never know.

Best time to stockpile goalie prospects. They’re the most energy intensive to develop. If you’re able to develop them, you can send them off, your current goalies off or just flat out make a move and reap substantial (normally) awards from doing so.
That and the team is deep enough that they can afford to take risks. If one prospect doesn’t pan out it doesn’t necessarily break them.
Human existence being an hallucination containing in itself the secondary hallucinations of day and night (the latter an insanitary condition of the atmosphere due to accretions of black air) it ill becomes any man of sense to be concerned at the illusory approach of the supreme hallucination known as death.

I’m not bearish, but it’s not the same roster as last season either. While none of the guys that left were of critical importance skills-wise, this team is placing a pretty extreme amount of faith in a bunch of kids for a Cup contender. The Caps are essentially expecting a bunch of rookies and almost-rookies to fill the 3C (if not more up front), 4D, 5D, 1G and 2G. Oh, and Flash is still the 2C and Erskine or Sloan will be getting a sweater every night.
The good news is that the kids seem to be alright, especially at F, but it makes me nervous. I’m of the opinion that veteran leadership matters and I’m not sure the Caps have enough to win when it counts. Hopefully GMGM won’t be afraid to pull the trigger on trades (and give up something of value if necessary) to fill in the holes.
<blockquoteHopefully GMGM won’t be afraid to pull the trigger on trades (and give up something of value if necessary) to fill in the holes.>
Hear, hear. We have too many valuable assets to keep muddling along without adding at least a solid defenseman to a defense that hasn’t cut the mustard to date.
You had me at no problem.
I thought Katie’s quote from Bruce about the upcoming cuts was telling:
“It’s tough,” Coach Bruce Boudreau said. “Especially at the forward position, where we’ve got guys who can play in the NHL. It’s unfortunate that some of them are going to go to Hershey, but sometimes it just doesn’t fit.”
Since it’s pretty much assured the MarJo isn’t going to Hershey that says to me that he’s sticking around. I’m also guessing that Perrault and Hendrickson are the ones heading to Chocolatetown given the waiver issue for A. Gordon.

I’m only surprised that Gordon got sent down after all the banter here about him. I mean, I never saw him as more than a 4th liner up here, and we have too many of those as it is.

Hendricks is probably better suited for that position right now than Gordon is, unfortunately for Gordon.
Why wouldn't you play Perreault? He's a really talented young player.
Hendricks is probably better suited to that position than most of the 4th line as it is.
by DrinkingPartner on Oct 5, 2010 10:32 AM EDT up reply actions
Hendricks is a little more versatile, in that he can line up at all three forward positions. He’s also a little bigger than Andrew Gordon, a fair bit older, and more mature.
Hendricks also has less upside. Gordon can still do a bit of learning down in Hershey, so perhaps the organization is hoping that he’ll still develop and put up some really dominant numbers down there. He does that, and he becomes a valuable trade asset, as well as a potential 3rd line right wing next season.
i’m not tryin’ ter pick a fight here er nothin’, but I just don’t think A. Gordon is nearly as good as that. For example, I don’t see him replacing either Fehr or Chimera on the 3rd line, this or next year. And I personally think Hendricks has a lot more going for him than either Brads, Steckel, or the B. Gordon we currenly employ (which is what I meant, originally).
by DrinkingPartner on Oct 5, 2010 10:45 AM EDT up reply actions
A. Gordon being a 3rd line right wing is, of course, contingent on either Semin hitting the open market and not coming back, or Knuble being let go.
Sure, but if he slips in only by subtraction of other players, I’m not sure he’s the best option.

I think Grabner is more likely to be taken (not that it’s an either-or situation). He’s younger and seems to have more upside. I’m not plugged into Florida’s situation, so I don’t know why he was waived. It was surprising to see his name on the waiver list, though…
I was surprised as well, but I’m sure someone will take him. But I don’t see why him being available would mean A. Gordon won’t be taken. The best hope is that there are just too many people on waivers and not enough roster spots because teams just made final cuts.

Regarding the deadlines to be compliant, via Mirtle and JP on Twitter:
Every NHL team has to be down to 23 players or less and cap compliant by 3 p.m. EDT tomorro. Should make things interesting on waiver wire.
@mirtle Which means everyone has to be on waivers at noon today (so they clear or don’t by noon tomorrow), yeah?
@JapersRink I believe so, yes. Makes sense.
Which means that if Fahey and Sabourin aren’t on waivers now, JC and Varly are going to the IR for the present, just to be compliant with the 23-man roster.

Fahey still around means we have 8 defense. That’s what they carried last year with Sloskine.
I didn’t envision this. We now have 3 goalies, 14 forwards, 8 D. That = 25, but they have to get to 23.
If we assume Sabourin to Hershey or Varly on IR, that leaves one more to go. Presumably that’s Fahey after practice?

If they’re keeping Fahey up now, it may be worth worrying about Green. The Caps are going to be right at the 23-player roster limit with Hendricks and Johansson still up, and they only open a roster slot by sending a player to injured reserve. Green-to-IR for a slapshot-off-the-foot would not be a great sign.
Fahey should stay up here if Green is sore. If Flash took one off the boot AND WE KNEW IT WAS ONLY A BRUISE, then you know MP85 would be here. So the only difference here is that nobody has specific info about Green, and even if BB said something, many, many people here would just speculate on what level of a lie it is.

So if Varly is still ailing by the end of the week, will they have Sabourin play in Atlanta so Neuvy starts in DC? Not that I want Varly to be hurt, of course, but I sure as hell don’t want Sabourin playing in the home opener.
"It's always good to have vikings."
Given that it’s the first two games of the season I doubt anyone will have problems playing a NHL keeper two nights in a row.
They have a game on Monday too, and I’m not sure Neuvirth is ready for three games in four nights at the NHL level.

All of our questions will become answers at the trade deadline, apparently
I’d take him over Sloanskine.. dude has cup experience.
Why wouldn't you play Perreault? He's a really talented young player.
because he was out with a brain injury. This fight with Shea Weber ended is 08-09 season and he didn’t return until a year later. He played 20 games in the 09-10 season, all of them after the Olympic break.

Anybody know if Jason Demers is going to make their squad this year? He looked great last season.

For those of you who can’t get on twitter, JP just tweeted a link to the prepared remarks the White House National Security Advisor delivered in Sochi. New administration policy: When in Russian, mention Ovechkin (third paragraph)

Underrated and Overrated
Burnside’s teams on ESPN: http://espn.go.com/nhl/preview2010/team/_/name/101005underrated
Caps placed one on the underrated team and an honorable mention on the overrated team.

Fehr has to be underrated. Should be Varly that’s overrated but it may well be Green.

Sorry, no.
The players play on the same line. I think both are a bit of a stretch, honestly, but understandable.

I looked, completely disagree with both. Oh well.

Same. Honestly, and I love the guy a whole lot, but Laich might be the most overrated Cap period. Or maybe that’s just me underrating him. Semin could be overrated by non-Caps fans based on his numbers. Kind of like Laich.
Laich is totally overrated because he’s good on the PP and a nice good looking guy. I mean even in the reason why he’s underrated, he’s overrated.
He even helped change a woman’s flat tire after the Caps were eliminated in Game 7 last spring.
Laich is an awesome person. But since when does being a good person make you a better hockey play?

Over-rated playoff team
Under-rated regular season team?
And Varly is hardly overrated. Vesa Toskala was overrated. Carey Price is still overrated.
Bruce Boudreau when asked about Brooks Laich's return to the lineup, he said: "He just adds another dimension to our team. If it was puzzle, he just fits that thing. He completes us."
Brooks Laich completing everything from teams to tires and everything in between.
Varly is hardly overrated
I don’t know, he’s already been passed on the depth chart by Neuvirth and the season hasn’t even started yet. It may be just a minor injury, but it is one in an increasing pattern, so I’m starting to think Varly’s got bust written all over him. I hope he gets healthy and plays lights out, but he hasn’t been able to stay healthy. Ever.
Eat, drink, and be merry! And then drink some more.
You know who also was injured for a long period(though not as long as Varly) of time last year?

Yeah? And whose injury has recurred already? Everybody can get injured, and I get that. But Varlamov’s injuries form an extremely unsettling pattern, and I have no faith in him starting 45-50 this year.

I don’t think this is true, not that we would know. When Varly is healthy and Neuvirth is still getting the majority of the starts, then that will be a fair statement. All indications are to the contrary (and have been ever since they were both drafted).
I am guessing he went with Laich under and Semin Over

Bettman on supplemental discipline.
I think Colie does an extraordinarily good job of taking care of what goes on on the ice," said Bettman. “He is extremely consistent. There are nuance differences (in cases), but you cannot paint what goes on in supplemental discipline in broad strokes.”
Indeed Mr. Campbell is as consistent in his rulings as is my 3 year old cousin.
I know he needs to show support of his administration but ya know in a comment where the point is you shouldn’t generalize this issue Bettman sure did make his answer as vague and generalized as possible.

Per Fire and Ice (via P/D) it looks like NJD have a solution to their cap crunch: Salvador and Salmella to the LTIR, and a 20-man roster to open the season.
Mighty kind of Salvador to sustain such a convenient injury.
They’re screwed if a position player goes down, though.
Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?
And they are screwed when Salvador gets healthy. If they want to bring him up they’ll still have to move someone. They are just delaying the inevitable. They aren’t banking cap space that they’ll be able to use to keep the gang together when those guys get healthy.
Lockout talk makes me want to go out and choke an old lady - Elliotte Friedman
When Salvador or Salmella get healthy, for sure. They’re ~$3.4M over the cap, and those two combined make ~$3.5M.
But I was thinking about the interim, if someone sustains an injury that is not major enough to merit the LTIR but not minor enough to play through. They don’t have enough cap space to call up a replacement. They’d have to either waive someone or pull shenanigans with the LTIR, which would still cause them to lose that guy for 10 games/24 days and possibly draw more ire from the League.
Either that or apply for permission to dress only 19 guys and play short a man.
Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?
I didn’t realize they needed to apply for permission to play a man short. I know CGY did it at the end of the season a couple years ago because they couldn’t afford a replacement. As is they are only dressing 11 F so they are going to be heavily relying on the guys they do dress. I agree that they are in a ton of trouble if anyone substantial gets injured. They really are working a tightrope, and looking at some of those contracts it’s no wonder people think Lou is the be all end all of geniuses. Bet he wants a do-over on quite a few of those deals.
