Is that considered Podlygamy?
How many female NHL beat writers are there? Pretty cool that there are at least two.

"If we had a 10-game segment and won six games every 10-game segment, that’s a 48-win season. Maybe 49 because of the extra two [games]. It should do you well. We think if this is a 10-game segment that is our worst 10-game segment, we’ll be happy. We don’t think that we’ve been consistently game in any of the games except for two. Once we start becoming consistent again then you’ll find segments going 7-2-1 and 7-3 and you’ll have one big streak in there, or two.
That’s a pretty good perspective to have on the season so far. While no one is happy with the team’s performance they are still 6-4 while playing perhaps only 2 games up to their capacity. To further put that in perspective, that projected 48 wins would still put the Caps at #2 in the East and #5 overall by last years standing. Nothing to sneeze at our be unhappy with, strictly by the numbers.
What is important is that the team isn’t sitting on their hands saying “We’re 6-4 we’re still great” but coming back saying “We should be 8-2, 8-1-1, 10-0” because they know they haven’t played well. The fact that the organization feels they haven’t been playing well and are still winning speaks to the skill of the team.
All the quotes out today make for great reading material but what really matters is that the boys apply it on ice.
Bruce Boudreau when asked about Brooks Laich's return to the lineup, he said: "He just adds another dimension to our team. If it was puzzle, he just fits that thing. He completes us."
Brooks Laich completing everything from teams to tires and everything in between.
I agree. What all of the guys and the coach were saying was pretty spot-on, from Ovi (sounding as if he has a bit of a cold) saying that it starts with him but that all of the top guys have to play better and with more consistency, to Green saying that they need to find the balance with being better defensively but without sacrificing the offense, and to BB saying that the team needs to stop reacting to the opponent and start dictating the play to better control the flow of the game.
Alright, confess-how many goals are you going to make this year?

“We have to change our game. We, the leaders in this group, have to play better. Me, Greenie, Backie, Brooksie, Sasha. We just have to play better. It starts with me and it’s going to start of everybody. We have to change it.”
-Alex Ovechkin
I think the message is sinking in.
Twas the best quote. Plus listening to Vicki Hall on JRR it sounds very much as if Ovi was all business in his interview. With all of the talk of how Ovi should be wearing the C, I like his message of the top-down accountability (and not him as savior) and an all business approach and frame-of-mind to tonight’s game.

I’ll believe it’s sinking in when I see the results (and I’m talking over 8-10 games, not just one good night). I don’t think they’ve ever had a problem with saying the right things.

True but I am used to Ovi taking on the full blame for the team’s failure whereas here he is talking about the top group needing to be better. One aspect of being a captain is demanding better out of teammates as well as of the team. I think it would be good for him to become less of a buddy and more of an authority figure. Of course we will see how this translate to on-ice performance. Which game was the aberration in their play?

Carolina. They played beautiful road hockey. Directly after which they showed a complete lack of interest against Minny.

I hear you but I’m going to leave that question open for now. I’ll re-evaluate tomorrow.

Talk is cheap. Especially so with this team. They’ve been good at the sound bite; execution of the substance of the various sound bites has been a bit more iffy.

Talk is cheap.
recipe for the capitals these days:
1. Talk about how things are going to be different
2. Play game, maybe win maybe lose.
3. If win, talk about how the team is finding it’s way, see the positives in a ten-fifteen minute effort that led to it and ponder the consequences of actually playing for sixty.
4. If lose BB talks about the AHL, the fact that they are big boys, how he talks to them about this stuff and is waiting got it to get through, #8 says it’s time to lead, blah, blah, blah
5.repeat.

I’d hate to be other teams in the league that are struggling even worse if we get this much criticism a whole 10 games into the year. Even if it’s just saying the right things, the thought process has to be going on. Patience as always…

I don’t usually buy into cross-sport strategies. Especially with hockey, I just think the tacticsare so different from those in any other sport that there’s not much you can learn about how to win in the NHL by studying the other sports. But this baseball analysis caught my eye, and I wonder if it’s something the Caps could apply in their own play…

Put this on OTOT as well, but here's the Bobblehead

BB's comments
Bruce was pretty pointed; was it a direct shot at MP, as well as Fehr, Flash, Alzner, Carlson? He specifically talked about the guys playing for years in the American league, the travel schedule (so it’s no excuse), then the zinger of becoming a “spoiled little player.”
I suppose if MJ is ready, MP will sit tonight. MP and Flash both were relegated to even lower lines near the end of the Wild game, IIRC.
Any Poti sightings in Calgary?
Saw Poti this morning on the ice at Kettler.

It sounds like MP will indeed sit out tonight.
It also appears that King and Boyd Gordon will be in the lineup.
There’ll be a whole lot of shaking going on.
(I could have sworn that Flash and MP were reversed in the Wild game as opposed to them both being relegated to lower lines.)

Geno Injured?
This comment on Pensburgh mentions it. Nothing elsewhere that I’ve seen, though.
Also, the complaints in the rest of that post look pretty familiar…cold comfort is better than no comfort, I suppose.

Elliot Freedman tweeted it last night. I watched the game and didn’t see him involved in anything.

He got hip checked late in the game by ??? and only played eight seconds longer.

And now the douche bag Pens won’t say if he’s playing or not tonight. So do I sit him or play him? Fucking Pens.

kcarrera tweets:
“Per Boudreau, Boyd Gordon will play for the #Caps tonight against the Flames.”
“Boudreau said Neuvirth will start against the Flames ’unless I have a drastic change in my mind. ’ #Caps”
Good…although I wonder who sits, maybe Stecks.

Assuming Boyd Gordon was on the IR (or non-active roster of some sort,) if Gordon is playing I assume either Johansson is going on IR or is already on IR or Perreault is being sent down?
The roster situation:
2G: Neuvirth and Holtby
14F: Backstrom, Bradley, Chimera, Fehr, Fleischmann, Hendricks, Johansson, King, Knuble, Laich, Ovechkin, Perreault, Semin, Steckel
7D: Alzner, Carlson, Erskine, Fahey, Green, Schultz, Sloan
3IR: ? Varlamov, BGordon, Poti
(based on information and assumptions)
Varlamov: Last game played was October 21 (not on trip)
Poti: Last game played was October 21 (not on trip)
Johansson: Last game played was October 21
BGordon: Last game played was October 16
If last game played was October 21 and if placed on IR (7 days min.), the earliest will be available to play will be against Calgary on October 30.

Which is better/worse – a banged up Tyler Sloan or a healthy Brian Fahey?
I remember someone in the game thread theorized that Sloan didn’t play the latter part of the MN game because he was hurt. Turns out they were right.
"It's always good to have vikings."
Other news from Katie C on CI.
It appears that Sloan was injured in the game and now he’s listed as having a “lower body injury”. Figured something must had happened to him if he had such a low TOI. (If BB benched every guy who made a particular egregious mistake, there wouldn’t be enough guys ready to play.)

Isn’t it time for some “Ascension to the mean” to happen for the Caps, who are playing so far below their mean performance norm that it’s not funny. Given that Danny Briere has more point than any of our guys.
(Okay, I know the Caps have to work at it and make an effort. Improvements do not happen w/o effort.)
