Andrew Gordon - 2011-2012

With Mike Knuble getting a year older, and starting to look his 38 years, does anyone else see Andrew Gordon as a player who could step into Knuble's spot on the top line?  Just wondering how others might see this playing out?  I don't see Knuble getting re-signed, so other than Semin, who else is there?  I don't see Fehr, or Laich being that player, and there are some well documented issues with putting Semin there.  Just wonder what others think and how they see it.

I’d suggest creating a Fanshot for this as this is minimal in content.

I don’t know about top line, but he certainly is a more affordable, but less… bleeding Matt Bradly

Frankly, no I don’t see A. Gordon filling the spot on the top line. Watching them both play, I think Fehr is the bigger, stronger, more talented player with the skill set that fits best with Ovechkin and Backstrom.

So Ovi and Backy are signed for the next decade or so, and Knuble probably doesn’t have much gas left in the tank. Of the guys on the roster, you have two other prototypical grinders in Fehr and Laich, and maybe a third in Hendricks.

If they manage to resign Laich and Semin, I don’t see that duo being split up. They clearly have chemistry, and they produce. And lets face it, I like Hendricks a lot, and he was a great signing, but he’s not a first liner on any NHL team, certainly not this one.

That leaves Fehr. Fehr and A. Gordon are for all intents and purposes the same age. To date, Fehr has played 187 NHL games to Gordon’s three. A grinder primarily scores using strength, size, and hands. I’m not sure Fehr is the clear winner in the hands department, but in terms of size and strength there is no comparison. Given the fact that he also has much more NHL experience, and his history of producing at a very high level everywhere he’s played, I think Fehr is the obvious choice should a vacancy open on the first line.

That said, as talented as Gordon is, I think he certainly finds his way onto the roster next year on the 3rd of 4th line, maybe higher depending on chemistry and on who comes back next year.

I am a hockey fan first, and a Caps fan second.

I think Fehr wins this comparison by quite a bit, but I could easily see someone else coming in to take that spot. It could be a FA, a new draftee, or a guy like Kuznetsov or Galiev. I’m not sure they’ll necessarily stick with it being a grinder type guy, especially if Nick and Alex continue to develop their cycle game.

If it is someone on the roster, it will be Fehr. Gordon is probably a 3rd liner.

If Knuble continues to struggle I’d like to see Fehr or Laich take that spot sometime this season.

Gordon… I don’t see it. Nothing he’s done in the NHL leads me to believe that he will ever be a top-line player (or even a top-6), and he’s not exactly a kid either. He was drafted the same year as Ovie, Schultz and Green, and even C. Bourque and Sami Lepisto have substantially more NHL experience than him.

HE HAS ONLY HAD 3 NHL GAMES! Give the guy a chance, christ sake.

But that’s exactly the point. He’s already (almost) 25 years old and he’s only played 3 NHL games. I’m not saying he’ll never be a contributor, but it doesn’t magically happen overnight like that at that age. If he was good enough to get top-line icetime this year, then he would have been good enough to get some more games before now. And as I said, in those 3 games he didn’t exactly look like a difference-maker.

Are 4th liners supposed to look like difference makers?

And if he’s fourth line good (I think he’s NHL good, but not on the Caps) now, he still could be better in the future, a la Knuble.

I’m definitely thinking he’ll have a Knuble esque trajectory.

One of those games was NYR comeback game two seasons ago, was he really supposed to impress in that game?

He’s a major contributor at the AHL level, but then again so is Giroux (but AG hasn’t had the games Giroux has,) and there isn’t a facet of his game I can say is a huge-major knock against him.. It’s not that he isn’t good, it’s that he’s stuck behind a bunch of established guys (Matt Bradley) for that 4th line spot. He’s a great locker room guy and is just one of those energy players. I think if we resign him (He’s an RFA) he’ll replace Matt Bradley, without the attempts at fighting and more offensive.

Although I love his heart and pugnacity, I don’t see Laich as having the hands to match Knuble. Fehr has potential if he gets the chance and is willing to take the abuse and do the necessary work.

That said, it’s possible neither one has the ability to make the quick and accurate decisions and reactions necessary to be a Knuble but I guess time will tell.

Remember, Knuble himself didn’t become a legit offensive player until he was 30. Both Laich and Fehr are WAY ahead of him in terms of offensive development at the same age.
